Had fun today. When I came out of the grocery store in town, saw the very end of a train disappear behind trees and houses. High tailed it in the car and booked fast out of town until well ahead of it. First road i tried was an overpass, so got back on the highway and kept driving. Found a small crossing (a sign only) where I parked and waited. Four CSX locos (2 BIG ones leading) pulling a very long mixed freight train. Always enjoy watching the tracks sag under the wieght of the cars and of course the BLAST of the air horns. As usual, no camera on me.

Didn't get anything done today except some movie watching. Had dinner with my father. Meatloaf, collard greens, black-eye peas, cornbread. Didn't even touch anything on the layout today. The wife and I also had a fun day. We went railfanning at our favorite spot. Besides being an unbelievable 68 degrees, we caught 9 trains in 2 hours.

I had planned on doing some chores at home today, but the wife said she wanted to go watch trains. It didn't take a lot to convince me that was a better idea, so off we went. This seems to be becoming a Sunday ritual for us.

Cold and crappy here in Lancaster county PA.........wet, cold, damp, and foggy.
Didn`t do much this weekend........sorted and identified a multi-pack of resistors that I`m setting up for an LED test rig I`m building.
Did some other odds and ends for some models I`m working on...........and watched a bunch of video`s in a new series that a guy named Brian Banna is doing.
Oh went to Hooters Saturday night........but other then that ......not much else.

We sre now enscounced in Bears country. Pukekohe to be precise. Container didn't make it to the track in time so we spent time sorting that out and iit is supposed to be on site now.
Blood poisoning is not to be treated lightly Ken. Hope it works out ok but you are really playing with fire.

Robbie - personally I'd go for it. HO is much easier to do for us geezers. I shudder when I go into the museum and am met with "There's a problem on the N gage" With the heat now blasting warm air onto it I now have track ripping away from the latex sealent I used to fix it to the layout. This will not be a fun fix I think.

Ken- I know how you feel about the VA, also know that its free for vets, but you wont get the same treatment at the VA as you would at a regular hospital, the VA is no different than an Active Duty Hospital they throw you in with a group of other sick people and rush you in and out as fast as possible... trust me, i had to wait three years to even get into the VA due to the fact you had to have 3 years military duty service, whether it being active or reserve or have one deployment under your belt. it may cost you your EM-1 to go to a Civilian hospital, but you need to go asap... what would your Commander say to you if you had this during your years of service?

Far as seeing Health Professionals that know how to deal with Diabetic Issues I think I am, I hope! The Anderson Express Care Visit was a stop gap till this Tuesday. That is when I will be seen again by the Leg and Foot Ulcer Clinic at the VA Hospital. But, I have to admit I wish I could afford a second opinion! I think the main problem with my current free care, is it is free! The VA is understaffed, underfunded and over whelmed with us old Vets! I am pretty sure if I or a insurances was flipping the bill my visits would not be put off to every 4 to 5 weeks. When the wound looks bad, they will check every week! But there lies the problem! With the wound being open, it take about two weeks for a new infection to set in!

1} ask at the hospital to speak to the "Patient Financial Advocate" every hospital has one...they work for the clients, NOT the hospital to determine your bill , if any, paying abilities. They can even get it reduced, or ELIMINATED ENTIRELY if you are in bad financial straits {which you are- simply explain to her you are doing your level best to save your house from foreclosure}. SHE {or HE} Will work on your behalf FREE OF CHARGE to get the bill "paid" or to a manageable way for you!
Also hospitals around here have a "covered care plan" that anybody who is at or below poverty line, all the way up to 350-400% ABOVE poverty gets either a HUGE Discount {50% to 100%}, or gets it reduced to a manageable monthly payment- like $25/month with no interest pay as you go!!! ' Simply submit last 4 pay stubs, and fill in other finacial information {Like your wifes SSI} and submit it. IFbyou tell me the names of two hospitals there, I will do my best to look it up for you and get back to you with hte info.
YOUR hospital bill could be eliminated! You CANNOT beat FREE 100% charitable discount if you qualify, which you may.
And, They still have to treat you as a "paying customer".
SO DO IT KEN- GO TO THE HOSPITAL!!!!.

SO your two antibiotics MAY not be working!!! AND you could have an opportunistic infection set in on you, unless it ALREADY HAS!

Reading about Ken worrying about the bill makes me feel glad we have Numerous free Public Hospitals throughout every City and town, and even smaller ones have access to free services or are able to get to bigger towns. There may be a wait of a few months for alot of elective surgeries but EMERGENCIES are seen to straight away.
I guess Australia is pretty lucky!

I’ve riden both Greyhound and Trailways in the past. Gotta give the hound the tip. Oh they both got me where I was going alright, but Greyhound obviously cared a bit more about the, how shall we say….appearance of the busses. At least on the inside. I may be speaking a little off here because it’s been a while since I checked, but IIRC, the Mega bus wasn’t really all that cheap if you had any distance to go. I think you priced from stop to stop and then added up. Something like that. Can’t remember.
I see Jeff was in a good mood last night. He doesn’t usually post himself smiling. Must have been good meatloaf.
Didn’t get to the trainroom yesterday, ended up cleaning up/out this long narrow store room on the south wall. It comes off the laundry room and has the power box, phone junction and the main sewage line exit to the….sewer. That was an all day leisurely activity. That is also the place where we store all her yard art so there was a lot of shifting around. It’s not all that narrow I guess probly 4 ft wide by oh, say 15, 20 ft long. Probably not 20. Well...could be. Should and may, put a narrow shelf along the wall of the main room in the basement for some more shelf storage for those things. You know “those” things? The odds and ends you have but really, and I mean really, you do not know what to do with them or where to put them. You just need to keep them.
I have a lot of "those things" in the trainroom.

Zoe? yes I am up early this morning as I had to be at my Granddaughter's school by 8:45 to get a good seat for her play. She had one of the speaking parts and said her lines nice and clear... Oh, I have a couple sour cream glazed doughnuts and my dark roast coffee for a mid morning snack, please.
Hey, hey, hey! The sun is coming out from behind the clouds every now and then (like right now). So I might actually make a few Kws of electric today. Not only that, but i have been reading up on getting the most out of the PIP running on electric, and made it all the way out to my son's house (a little over 7 miles) without the ICE ever kicking on. 999 mpg is what it told me. I still had just over 3 miles of all electric left for the trip home. Right now it is charging so I can drive up to my sister's house to feed the cat later this afternoon.
Ken... I really hope hope you don't wait too long and end up losing the toe, your foot, or your leg, or maybe even worse! Those kind of infections can blossom into an acute, life threatening event, very quickly. Please listen to those on here who have given you some good, straight forward advise to follow!!!
One of the mommies at the play this morning was one of my favorite students back about 15 years ago at the Middle School. I got a big hug from her! She is still as cute as can be! And still a sweet kid!

Been gone a while. Still trying to recover from loosing my MOH to cancer back in April. Boy has it been tough. Harder than ever thought. Well any way I have been trying to get back on my feet, catch up on vehicle repairs, house repairs, counseling for the kiddos etc.....So any way I have finally reached a stage where I can start thinking about getting back into modeling.
I have some questions for you all. I will be taking down my current system and starting over. I want to convert to DCC, change the shape and layout to better fit the room and loosely base it on the N&W. also to build in modules (I think ?) . In the spirit of recovery and moving on with our life I am preparing our home to sell and move to a new location . So in the mean time I want to start the building the layout in a manner that can be easily removed and reinstalled else where. I was thinking of just building the frame, installing electric and the DCC ssytem , tracks of course. Any thoughts on this plan of renewal for the railroad?

As you state you are in a bit of a limbo situation right now, my consul to you would be to go the module route. go to the NMRA web site and look up the Freemo section that is in the scale you want to be in. And go with those standards. They are easy to move and then if by chance it takes a little longer than expected to get your layout operational you can always take your module to a show or display of Freemo and it will fit right in and become part of the overall operation. Do get back to it, but leave your options open until you know where you are going to be more permanently and the space you will have to work with..
You don't have to stop with one module, you could build a straight one or a couple of straight ones or a corner unit and they would / could be incorporated into your layout when the time arises.
Actually this is a better start for you. Google, "freemo model railroads" there are lots of entries. you'll find things such as this >>>

Been thinking of making my big new HO layout out of a series of hollow core doors with those folding metal legs. This way it "could be" moved, if ever the desire or need to do so ever comes up again. Couple questions:
1) Was wondering if the "ends" of the layout were 4'x4', would this be enough area to run a pair of loops for large articulated locos to manage?
2) Since I will be going all DCC, is Bachmann EZ track still a good (and less expensive) way to go, or is there another track I should be considering?
Suggestion appreciated as always. I'll be in the corner booth, warming up the inner boiler.

hmmmm, I'm not sure of Bachmann's EZ track behavior with DCC but between Atlas N scale and Bachmann N scale the atlas track was cheaper by half/ almost half the price of bachmann switches. the plastic roadbed doesn't come with atlas track.
speaking of atlas track I need to find a place that sell's code 55 so I can get my track while I still have plenty of money. I'd use Kato track but it's purely out of aesthetic choice that I choose atlas, I like ballasting the track. I'll be extra careful around the switches this time.

Rob, I've thought about your plan and think that a HCD might not quite fit the bill especially for HO. I thought of those folding metal legs for my HCD N scale layout and found they weren't steady enough not to mention being far too low. How would you attach them together so that they are secure? I don't think a 4x4 end would allow for enough radius to use articulated locos. The most you could do would be 22" for the outer loop and 18" for the inner. According to B Man the EM1 has a minimum of 22". Can't imagine how it would look. I find that my Light Mountain doesn't look that good on 22" and ridiculous on 19" ( I use Kato track). My Northern manages the 22 with the blank flange driver set but while it will do the 19, it slows down a lot and bascially just grinds around at a slow speed. I would love to be able to have at least 24" and would encourage you to see if you can go to a 5' table assuming you are looking to do a dog bone type of plan.

Lots of rain showers today. Powers been flickering and internet service has been up and down, more down than up all day. Looks like we have a good chance for freezing rain tonight and tomorrow morning then rain all day tomorrow. The forecast I looked at a little while ago indicates we may be clear by Thursday. God I hope so. I'm so tired of rain, rain, rain all the time. This weather pretty much matches my mood and has me so depressed I don't want to do anything.Normally I'd work on the layout but I don't want to do that either. I haven't touched anything on it for two days now. Last thing I worked on was the GP40/AS16 thing I was messing with. Well guess I better post this while I still can. Be back tomorrow if I can.

Both Rob and YouGottaWanta asked about layout construction. My entire layout is designed and build so it could be moved in case we relocate. It is basically an around the wall layout with a series of home-made tables end to end. My design is based on "domino" layout construction. A true domino layout allows for sections to be shuffled around and reconnected in a differnt pattern. Mine has the tables, but teh layout design does not allow for trading sections back and forth. I might find some old photos of construction if you are interested.
Todd..... I suppose I should take a close up photo so you can see all of the dogs.
On my layout today, I made some utility poles for flat car loads and to include in a stack at the power plant. I used cheap skewers from the grocery store and cut them a scale 40'. Then I stained them. Finally, I blackend them with black paint.
Anybody else planning some new layout projects?

Guess I'll be going with large 6'x6' ends, as I want double mains capable of running articulateds in basic meandering loops around the outside of the entire layout, for when I want to sit back and watch trains run. Of course I will also want some operations to do on this layout inside of those mains with smaller locos.
***Garry, yes I would like to see pics of your benchwork if you can dig some up without any trouble.
On the HCDs, I plan on glueing down the thick pink foam to them, which will add 2"(?) and some strength. The folding legs are 29" high, so add another 4" to that with the HCD + foam. Guess that would still put the track 7" lower than the NMRA standard, huh! I was just thinking it would make it much easier to contruct with those ready to go folding legs. I could construct a simple box frame under each door which woiuld add yet more strength and offer an easy place to bolt longer wood legs on. Just want to keep construction simple and easy these days.
As for locks, have a bunch of small locks, have no idea what they are called. I would still probably add a small metal plate on the outer edges where the tables meet. Of course any explanations on connecting sections "the normal way" (whatever that is) will be welcomed, too.

Really not a bad day here for January. Temps were in mostly in the high 30's. currently 30°F outside with a low in the upper 20's. Do wish the sun had shown a bit more. It would break through the clouds for a few seconds and it would get dark again. Water is still pouring into the basement from the melted snow, but seems to be slowing a bit. I use a siphon to move the water from an area behind the back steps directly to the sump so the spillage doesn't run all over the floor down there before finding a route to the sump. Whoever pieced the thing together wasn't the brightest light bulb out there I guess.

Been doing some reading at a forum devoted to the PIP (Plug In Prius) and been finding some great information about the characteristics of the car and how to best drive it to get the most out of it... Now if I could just find where they hid the clutch!
Looking for a bit of advice here folks. I have built the structure that will have the water tank on it from styrene shapes (Angle iron, I Beams, etc.). I want to add some of the Micro Mark "rivets" that are basically decals. Should I I paint the Styrene with a clear gloss before I add the decals, or can I get the decals to stick directly to the styrene. After the decals are added the entire structure will get painted a brown or gray and then weathered with a bit of rust.
