Lunchtime!

Flo, a Barry-sized burger, fries and an RBF, please!

Barry - thanks for passing that cold along. Not only that my head is clogged, I also got a terrible toothache! Need to see the dentist soon - I hope I get an appointment next week. I will have Petra call him - she is his pet patient Mischief

I went to our city hall today to pick up my new ID card - the old one will expire in a couple of weeks. That new card cost me 50 $, as there is a chip in them containing biometric data. A new passport, which is essentially the same thing, but only has some pages for visas, will cost 100 $ - too much for me. Once my old one has expired, I will not be able to travel outside of Europe any longer - Sigh

Great to see some new faces in this places, but I am also missing some of the old ones.

Have a splendid day!

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and two eggs over medium, bacon, hashbrowns and a couple biscuits please. Oh and some of that blackberry jam thank you.

Oh, G musta been busy yesterday and tired this morning. No trivia posted for breakfast rading.

Partly sunny, with a high near 74.

Ken- Daughter story sounds oh so familiar. Mine was/is same way. Just waaaaay to busy to wait for someone who won’t drop what they’re doing to do it on her schedule. I stopped doing it. She can explain to the guys at Jiffy lube why she should be catered to and bumped in line because she is the only person in the world who has kids and she just doesn’t have time to wait for the other people. She’s getting better. The boy now, he don’t know what a wrench is, but he got him a Cadillac and he pulls that thing into the place every 3500 or 3 or 4 months for the oil change and checks on every little noise the thing makes. Sometimes a bit anal if you ask me, but hey, he learned from his mistakes and now he has a real decent car, he’s gonna take care of it. Besides with three kids he needs reliable transportation. I hope the girl learns as well.

Hope Lee's feeling better. Not sure what creeping crud is. Might could be some weed he's dealing with in the yard too.Hmm Never thought of that.

Well, Brenda wanted to go to Red Lobster last night for all you can eat shrimpHuh?. I don’t know, maybe it’s me, but I’ve never had a good meal there. Not bad, just not…..good. Last night was no different. The pasta for the Some Kinda Shrimp and Alfredo with a Funny Wang Taste over pasta, was over done and pastey, The, oh shoot. What’s that stuff called? I say it all the time, Brenda’s favorite. Really? If I wasn’t trying to…., Shrimp Scampi! That’s it. The shrimp was over done and mealy and the second one was a bit better, but still over done. Brenda’s was better than mine and her Terriyaki shrimp…Mischief...on a steeck, was pretty good actually. I guess me and that old Red Lobster just don’t get along. Ooodles of people love it and swear by the place. I can’t be so generous. Waiter was good though so I tipped accordingly. Food quality is not his fault. I mean it looked good, er at least like it usually looks. That’s another thing. Nothing I’ve got from Red Lobster looks fresh. It always looks….well…prepackaged and heated up. Again, maybe just me. Now Joe’s Crab Shack on the other hand…Yes Big Smile.

Tired of waiting! Today I proceed with the shower and hope for the best with the base mortar not quite set yet. It’s been a week and a half now and the stuff still ain’t dried. Of course it is an inch and a half thick sooooo…..??? Hopefully today I get the roof paper hung and the backerboard up at least. Gotta w**k tonight so that, oh and some laundry needs done, so that kinda shortens my day. Not to mention the other odds and ends that show up in a retired persons day.....since we aren't w**king and have nothing else to do.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

 Evening Dinners

Yes Flo, I know I am all wise the person in the dinner. Thank You For The Beer!

Welcome Dennis and Mobilman44 to the dinner. I will send you my address for the $15.00 a month membership dues. I take Visa, MasterCard or rolling stock as payment.  Laugh I hope you know I am kidding, but if you want to send the money anyway I will take it!

Well I am off Thursday! Sigh Reason for the long faces you ask?

1 Have to call BoS (for the new folks BoS is Bank of America or as we know them here at the dinner Bank of Stupid) Fighting with them to keep my house I have lived in for 20 years. Every person I talk to tells me something different. Bang Head

2 Have to pick up my daughter's cars for brakes and a oil change. Will be doing the brakes and oil change at a friends shop. Don't get me started as to why I am not doing them at the shop I work at! She want's it done in a hour? Does not understand that Bob is going to fit us in when there is a rack vacant.

By the way, she has not changed her oil for over a year now! We got in a fight over that!

3 Have to run the wife around for her stuff.

4 Cut the front and rear grass.

5 Fix the water-heater. Long story there.

6 Go to the bank and other stuff.

I am off my SoapBox for now.

Goooooooooooooooood Evening, plate of cheeseburgers, plate of fries, bucket of 7-Up please 'n thank-you...Rerun and I will leave the roast beef for JIM from Missouri Hmm

Welcome to the new guys!

JEFF: THAT elevator looks to be coming along good! Bow Great idea, using plaster to cap the end. As for paint choice, while I usually go "right" (some would argue I go "far right"), this time I'm gonna go far left. Then again, I've got THAT pesky little prototype hang-up going for me. THAT said, there's probably an elevator somewhere painted green and I'll bet some Cargill decals would look right at home on it.

TODD: So tell me, how did you manage to get Brenda out back for a grooming???Laugh

Making smooth plastic look like concrete: I've had to use quite a bit of Squadron Putty (white) on my elevator, "Elevator G," so had the bright idea to use coarse sandpaper to not only smooth the many joints (especially on Walthers' silos), but also to rough-up the surface and make it look more concrete-ish. Well (still down, toads have packed up and moved away), after two coats of Poly Scale "aged concrete," you'd never know I did THAT. Oh well. Can't lose if you don't play right? At least where I filled-in windows (on the main structure), and filled gaps and joints, it's nice and smooth.

Here's a very quick "grab shot" of the main structure so far, lots left to do here.

I can't wait to see JEFF's creation.

Have a good night and a better tomorrow everybody!

Time for me to call it a night. You all know by now what I've been up to today so I won't waste your time and mine with a recap. The grain elevator project is starting to come together and is quite honestly one of the most ambitious projects I've undertaken in many years and is the first scratch build I've dared to tackle since 2003. I'm hoping it'll turn out as good as much of my past work did but I was much more physically able then. See y'all tomorrow.

Welcome Dennis! Since Mobilman44 stopped in and we just filled him in on the place, and I hope he didn't think we were too overboard, just kinda nose through what we talked about.

We don't always list the does and don'ts if you will, but from time to time it's god to keep them out there. So ever so often when someone stops in for the first time some of us just run them past just to make sure no little issues. Kinda like a 100th customer wins sorta thing.Laugh

I wish I could find that description from years ago that told all about the diner, how it worked and the employee schedule (calling Flo, Zoe dosn't always go over well. Don't ask me how I know Black Eye ) It got lost in the great crash of 2010. I know I had printed it out too, but I put it someplace where I could find it and now I don't remember where that was.

HEY guess what? No Willie Nelson didn't stop by, but I did go down to the trainroom todayBig Smile. Stood there and thought...."Sadwhat a mess" Pulled a couple spider webs away and asked myself where in the world did all those little wood chips came from! Then I looked up and remembered. Wood floor staples. When I blew the staples into the floor it sent THOUSANDS of little wood chips raining down on Toddland (of which I'm king). No roof damage reported so it doesn't appear I have to make an insurance agents office......yet.

OzJim, now that we know you have a 'Cape' near you (too), it may be more confusing for people wondering which 'Jim' they're replying to. (Unless they look at the time of day when a post was - that could tip 'em off...)Smile, Wink & Grin

Hey CAPEJim

If you were referring to me mentioning CAPE in my last post I was referring to the whether term "Convective Available Potential Energy" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convective_available_potential_energy

Altough we do have many capes in Queensland... Cape York, Cape Tribulation... but these are 1400km from me! The nearest cape to me is "Cape Moreton" is about 50km north of me on Moreton Island, Cape Moreton is the location for the oldest light house in Queensland with it being built in 1857, interestingly the only light house built by New South Wales before Queensland became it's own state. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Moreton_Light

There you go, a short geography and history lesson Smile

Dennis - Welcome to the Diner also! A real, live 1:1 RRer! Bow Have you started plans/dreams for a layout, or have you had time for that, due to your day job?

Thanks,

I actually do have a layout I started in November 2007........it is a modified version of the "Wawbeek & Sunmount Ry.........6' x 14' with a 2' x 6' extension in the process of being built.....you can see some pics in the "Layouts & Layout building" thread under my layout and Layout Extension.

I spent 8 months in the backshop of the Strasburg RR.....but left there in Feb. 2011.......worked at a truck builder for 16 months and left there to go to the East Penn RR and I`ve been there for 7 weeks now.

Here is a link for the railroad....http://www.eastpennrr.com/

Evening, Chloe, I'll just have a Santa Fe mug of coffee and a hot fudge brownie sundae, please (nothing heavy...Whistling  Thanks!

First, my apologies for missing wishing you a Happy Birthday, GalaxyCake I hope it was a good one, and that you got lots of PM's... Wink I guess you must've had a good time on your birthday, since you're resting up today, eh? Whistling

Ray, from your descriptions of the museums' goings-on, if I ever got up that way, I'd definitely find out if the trains were gonna be running. Thumbs Up

Stan (B&O1952), great pics of the Berkshires (HEY, DUKE! Wake up!!) you have there. Bow (Sorry for yelling, but we have one of the Diners who dozes a bit in the back of the Diner, but he perks up when Berkshires are mentioned, so I didn't want him to miss your photos.) Wink

Jeff, how are you feeling today/tonight? Hopefully better than you were on Monday. Also, did you put a speed governor on your mother's wheelchair? She might try to make a break for the exit on 3/4 speed (or more)...SurpriseOops

(Oh,not that I'm a person who watches a certain Monday night sport, but I did hear this huge collective groan for some reason that evening. I don't think I'll ask *anything* about what THAT was...)

Todd - and that little bitty linoleum job started how long ago? OopsWhistling Never mind, I probably shouldn't ask...

Barry, that is one funny cat/dog/whatever! ROTFL!Laugh (Hmm, does sorta resemble Spring...)Huh?

Dan - you mean you got 'corrupted' at the LHS by those iNvisible scalers? (That's okay, we have a fair number of them in here, too. Smile, Wink & Grin)

Mobilman44 - good to see a guy with a HEALTHY appetite in the Diner at breakfast time. Thumbs Up And don't be a stranger - Y'all c'mon back soon, y'hear? (Said with a sorta Midwestern/Southern accent...) Glad you stopped by! Oh, and that bouncer guy that Galaxy mentioned? That might just be our twin servers' cousin Vinnie (nope, you don't want to meet him for the most part, and definitely NOT in the alley out back of the Diner, after you've been rude to Zoe, Chloe or the rest of our servers in here...)

Psst! Diners! Better tone down all that talk about Christmas cards - you'll get Todd all stressed out about which ones he has to pick out for us. Smile, Wink & Grin... (Shh! He'll hear us!)

Paul, if you can't find another not-so-LHS for the Arizona Rocks & Minerals stuff, you can find some of their dealers at:   http://rrscenery.com/NEW/Stores.html

or order them from his/their website here:   http://www.rrscenery.com/NEW/index.html

Hope that helps. [Edit:]  Looks like you may have taken care of that; well, save the links, in case you run out... Wink

Ulrich, best wishes on getting suitable structures; that price does sound more than a wee bit high for mere mortal tastes/budgets. That idea of weathering the buildings may help you.Thumbs Up

Looks good Jeff,

Have you thought about using that textured spray paint to give it some roughness? then maybe going over it with a wet sandpaper to smooth it down a bit before adding your final color of grey paint?

I've been looking at some of the paint colors I have and found one I like. It's a mis-tint satin latex I picked up from Lowe's called 'Silver Bells'. At this point the test tube is the only one that's painted.

Work on the elevator is progressing. At this time the plaster and glue and setting in the last of the silos. The next step will be to sand them to take off the smooth plastic appearance and give it the look and feel of concrete. I've already done this on the scrap tube I'm using to test my concepts. It has a nice looking texture of concrete. Later I'll paint it and see what it looks like.

I just ordered 6 bags of ballast from Arizona Rock and Mineral, should be enough to last a little while, unless I spill a lot of it on the floor.

Mobileman44- Big hearty welcome to you sir! I've seen you around the forums. Glad you stopped in and hope you stay aound. No this place isn't everyones cup of tea, but we like it and welcome who ever wishes to show up. Good thing about here is, if you have a problem, you will get help without the "looks horrible" comments. Those in the know genuinely want to help others enjoy the hobby as much as they do and do NOT have a better than thou attitude. If someone stops in and gets abit brash, and it does happen from time to time, we just ignore them and they usually just move on down the tracks.

Work on the grain elevator got put on hold this morning. My father needed me to help him lift my mothers power chair into the back of his truck. So got that done then went to the nursing home with him as it was going to take both of us to unload it there. We got it unloaded and I drove it to my mothers room. I tested the speed setting on it on the way. A little below medium should be as fast as she needs to go. The fastest I had it up was 3/4's and the vertical mortar lines in the cinder block walls of the hall all disappeared and residents standing in the hall went by like a picket fence. Yeah, she definitely won't need that setting. Anyway, I showed her how to operate it, how to hook up the charger, etc.

Now, on the grain elevator project, I have half of the silos done with what I call 'roof plugs' and I'm preparing to do the other half. The first part of that is to rough up the inside of one end of the with some sandpaper. I then place three strips of one inch masking tape across that end so they overlap a bit. I then put a fourth strip going across those at a ninety degree angle. It's not really needed but I feel better knowing it's there. Next I stand them taped end down on the kitchen counter and pour plaster into them to a depth of one inch then let them stand a couple of hours. I then pour a little glue in and let that set. Removing the tape reveals a fairly smooth plaster plug. Later I'll cover the top with some tissue and glue. That give the glue something to stick to later when I add the gallery (structure on top of the silos). Here's one I did earlier on a piece of scrap pipe to test the concept.

End taped:

End after plaster set and tape removed:

It´s plain card stock, but about 400 pieces of it.

In the meantime, I found a suitable kit. It is made by Auhagen, which is hardly known in the US, as they follow European (mainly German) prototype only. Their industrial structures might be of interest, though.

The station building actually pretty much looks like the one in my home town.

With a dab of paint and some weathering, i think it´ll look equally well ( at a quarter of the price for both the depot and the freight shed).

Ulrich -- you might end up having to scratchbuild (or kitbash) something ... I can't think of any manufacturers that make European-prototype stuff outside the sources you've probably already checked (Faller, Heljan, Trix, Marklin, etc).

Is the laser-cut kit cardstock (i.e. paper), or plywood?

Ray - that early? I did my Christmas shopping always on the 24th Whistling

Dan - I need typical 1890´s style brick railroad buildings, as you find them everywhere in northern Germany. Most of the kits available here follow southern German prototype, which is out of place here. There is one business making laser-cut card kits, but they are just outrageously expensive. Need to look for a regular plastic kit, which fits my wallet.

Morning All,

Currently 54 with an expected high of 84 under mostly sunny skies.

Welcome Mobileman Welcome As one of the newer diners here I can tell you that this a really nice place to sit and chat while having a nice meal, or just some coffee. Very friendly people here as well.

I think all the stress of what has been going on with my wife for the past two plus months caught up with me yesterday. Stomach was doing flip flops all day. Did not go to work or to the hospital. Feel a bit better today. Wife is on second full day of round two of chemo treatment, and all is well she says. Blood counts are good, and she can start on a liquid diet today. And no Ken, that does not mean Beer lol.

Tried to order some Arizona Rock and Mineral ballast from Caboose hobbies yesterday. The color and size I wanted they were out of, so I need to try someplace else.

Today is my regular day off, so if stomach feels better I will go visit my wife and maybe do some layout work.

  Prayers to all in need.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of Buckwheat pancakes w/ some NYS Dark Amber Maple Syrup, sausage, and lots of dark roast coffee in my  R&GV RR Mug this morning.  Thank you Ma'am!

Mobilman44, welcome aboard!  As has already been said, this is a great place to sit and share a whole lot of things including all kinds of trains stuff and how life is treating you.  Just be on the watch for Vinnie, as there are certain items he gets real mean about...  I see those have already been mentioned so I won't repeat them here. Whistling  Good to see you sir!  And stop in often...

The electrician from Rochester Solar arrived this morning to make a few corrections to the panels on the roof.  he also has to install a lightning arrestor on the DC side of the system (They had to order one and it just came in).  I will also be doing the monthly reading of the meters (both electric and gas) today.

Ulrich, Christmas Cards???  In September?  Oh well, my sister in Canandaigua has already bought most of her quantity of presents she will be giving this year.  I, am the opposite and start to worry around December 20th. or so.  WhistlingLaugh

Jeffrey, nice start on the Elevator!  Great idea for keeping the lines exactly straight which gives me an idea for the bands I have been trying to oput on the water tower at the power station.  Thanks!

I have a large list of items I should get done today, so I best get moving.  Have a great day!
