 Evening Dinners

 Flo Beer pleases.

Daughters brakes are done. Rotor's where wrapped but she still had 25 % of her pads left. Tells you about how she drives! Whistling Far as her oil, only 10,000 miles over due! Bang Head While I was at the bank she works at one of her female coworkers tried to defender her by saying (Woman need a man or a father to remind them of theses things) I pointed out to her Gender has nothing to do with Intelligences! Plus she grew up in a Car Family. She use to hand me tools when I was working on my cars. Heck, she took her driving test in my 70 Big Block Cuda! Whistling

Should have seen the look on the faces of the guy that was going to go with her! Laugh He looked Ick!

That her sitting next to the Cuda, my Charger is on the right.

Ah, Dennis I must be taking this the wrong way.

WHY oh WHY do manufacturers make parts to purposely fail-out of warrantee-but close to brand new just to resell you new parts that are "the better parts" at high markups?

So they can make money to stay in business and pay for the bosses three martini lunches.

Well that's one part of the operation done. The silos have been painted and have been sprayed with Matte Finish. I'm waiting for them to dry then I'll turn them and spray the other side.

SoapBox WHY oh WHY do manufacturers make parts to purposely fail-out of warrantee-but close to brand new just to resell you new parts that are "the better parts" at high markups?

IT will COST us $1,030.00 to fix the furnace...the new repair man told me up front he'd not be surprised to find thing wrong with it {It wouldn't kick on} as the furnace company is noted for failures in a year or 2 just out of warrantee {1 Year- which is a rip off as a heating system only gets used 1/2 a year!}. It was JUST put in LAST year!!!  Bang Head

The: Igniter burned out, the induced draft motor was burned out, and the pressure switch on the induced draft motor was stuck wide open.  Bang Head

The switch: $225.00, The igniter: $300, The Induced draft motor: $350, $75 in tax, and $80 in "service call".

Bang Head  Bang Head   Bang Head

That is ONE THIRD of what we paid for the furnace to begin with last year!!!   Bang Head

There will be NO TRAIN BUDGET for me NEXT year as well!!!!!!  {ULRICH I feel your pain!!!}}}

Bang Head I have a Head ache.

Jeffrey: I like the light stone gray too!

Thought I would stop in before going to start dinner in a hour or so.

I have been busy working in the layout room this afternoon. So far I have done

- Vacuum layout room floors

- Clean dust off loco and car drawers

- fixes spots where ballast has come louse

- clean structures

And start to scenic a spot on the layout that was looking a little bare. As I don't have to get up early tomorrow I may work on it to the late hours tonight. I will give the track a good cleaning in the following days also.

Ray - I get my diabetic testing supplies through the mail, and I have had to submit a monthly record about every six months. I think I have had to do this since the beginning of 2010. There's no doubt in my mind that this is nothing but bureaucracy at work. I would be willing to wager a bunch that human eyes never even see them. And what would it tell them?

Jeffrey, I took the liberty of pulling your silo photos down to my desktop and correcting for color and tone in Photoshop (I was seeing a lot of yellow from your lights).  With that in mind, of the colors you have, I change my vote to the Stone Gray.  It would be the best base for a concrete color.  You might want to experiment with some lighter grays and even white from rattle cans...  Hold the can about a foot away and give it a quick dusting with the lighter colors.  Let the spray just drift onto the silos.  Once you have what you want dull coat it to seal the colors.   See if you like the results...

Yellow from CFL's? Well I guess anything's possible. The rattle can treatment will have to wait as I don't have anything in lighter colors. I may be able to pick some up next week.

*

*

Well the poll is closed and the vote is in. Fourteen votes (not including mine, David's and my fathers) and seven of them are for the stone gray. So stone gray it will be. I'll start on the painting this evening. The color has no 'real' name other than mis-tint. I picked it up for a buck at Lowe's two years ago. Valspar satin latex house paint. Cheap stuff but when your budget is a shoestring frayed to a thread you learn not to be picky.

Afternoon folks!

Flo, a tall glass of lemonade would suit me fine at the moment...

Had to run downtown for some pictures of dead presidents for the weekend, buy a thin High E string to use for a modeling project at the Music Store downtown, and pick up a couple prescriptions.  The drug store now has to have a printout of all my blood draws for the last month or Medicare won't let them fill the prescription for the test strips...  I dunno...

Still have to run over to another store that I forgot I needed to go to earlier!  They say the second thing to go is the memory you know.  Can't remember what is first at the moment.  What were we talking about?

Later!

Jeff - I also vote for a light gray. With a little weathering that´s going to look great!

Just went to a pharmacy to pick up the strongest pain killer that one can get without a prescription. I hope that will bring me through the night. I have to watch out with those meds. I have to avoid Aspirin, as it interferes with my heart medications. Oh boy, it hurts a lot.

Hi JEFF,

I agree with you, you don't want white.  But the lighter the grey the better.

From the picture it looks like the "silver bells" is almost a metallic. Is that so ?

If it is that rules it out immediately.  Might just be the lighting.

When you first spoke of putting the plaster in one end,  I thought that would be the bottom to give them more stability and make them less top heavy.   Guess I was wrong with that assumption.

Seems quite a few like the stone gray. Six votes for it so far. The plaster plugs are the tops of the silos. The bottoms will be mounted on 2" plugs even if I have to make them myself. I wanted the plaster plugs in the tops so it will be easier to mount details later. Plaster can be drilled into easily and it's easy to fix any damage. Yes, the Silver Bells is somewhat metallic. I was using it for testing only to see if the latex paint would keep grip on the PVC.

Only a few more days and we shall be moving the Diner to the October 2012 location - any thoughts or ideas where that could be?

Well I finished roughing up the silos and vacuumed the PVC dust off of them. I took them out outside and stood them open end down on the handle of my old gas grill so the remannts of tghe glue can drain out of them. I also sprayed them down with Krylon Matte Finish. That'll make them a bit easier to paint. I'll be using a 1/4" Testor's paint brush for that. The paint (so far looking to be the stone gray) is Valspar satin household latex.

Boy, do I know about those scooter batteries! My Mom had one and it seemed I was always having to mess with them. She passed away last December and what with me selling her and all, I didn't have a heated space to store the darned thing. I had intended to take the batteries in for the winter because they don't like -30 C weather. Anyway with one thing and another, I forgot. Come spring, it cost me $523.00 CDN to replace them.

The plan was to sell the scooter this summer but that didn't work as planned so now I need to take the batteries out and bring them in before I forget again. Don't need to blow another $500 of my RR budget again!!

Well the frost melted frost looks like it's melted off so best I get out there an do some fall cleanup. And yes, take the dammed batteries out while I'm thinking about it.

Cheers to all

Very nice pic Stan.

Morning guys

Its a cool clear fall morning here today. The wife and I went out for breakfast this morning then headed to the country hoping to get some railfan pics but didn't see anything, did manage to get some nice fall foliage pictures though.

I am going to spend the next few days working as much as I can on the layout before starting the new job on Monday. I hope to get alot done ( and cleaned ) before then. Well Im going to browse around here a bit and get started on it.

Good morning all!

Had a couple of busy days this week, but I found time to drop in this morning.

For everyone who commented on the fog scenes, thanks. We use two small foggers from MBT called Lil Critters. They are small enough to position just about anywhere. Ray, I just turn it on high and let it run until the scene is right.  Here's one more for ya!

Garry, I knew you would find a frame for it. I use 16"x20" canvas panels for that reason. I'm glad you like the video. My next video will include more scenes of switching moves plus the best of what I used on this video.

Welcome to Mobilman44 and Dennis!

Well, time to get painting.

 Have a great day!

Mornin' everyone,

Zoe, just a bowl of organic pumpkin seed granola and lots of dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug please.

Nice sunny Fall day outside here in the Finger Lakes.  Currently 59°F with a high in the mid 60s later this afternoon.  I will have to go outside and watch the meter run backwards for a while! Whistling

Jeffrey, I like your "test" color the best.  Concrete is a very hard thing to get to look right on a model because concrete isn't "a" color but an ever changing group of colors.  Also concrete varies due to the mix and the gravel used to make it.  I have used a base color of medium gray followed by several very light coats (more of a quick mist from a ways back) of various spray can colors (brown, black and other grays).  The roughness on your test gives some variance as you see it and is a good base color...  Just my My 2 Cents

Some "concrete" steps in Hopewell...

I have to start getting everything done for the NMRA Division Meet this coming Saturday so I will be a bit busy most of the day.  I need to pop over to the Troop 1 meeting tonight to down;oad a photo for a tri-fold flyer I am putting together for them.   I'll stop in from time to time to see who is here and what is going on...

Have a great day!

So nice a video of 4070 on the move. As far as I know she hasn't been run since 1991 and is in need of extensive repairs.

yup... it's going to take a *lot* of work to put her back together.  Off the top of my head:

- Piston Rings (we have new ones, waiting to be installed)
- Cylinder Liners
- New tubes and flues (15y FRA requirement)
- Boiler Integrity Ultrasound (in the late '90s, it was checked, and OK ... but still needs a new check)
- Frame work (requires boiler removal)
- Main drive axle put back in
- all drive wheels properly quartered, and rods re-attached
- boiler put back on frame
- appliances re-attached
- Automatic Stoker fixed (loco and tender portions)
- boiler insulation and cover sheeting re-applied
- FRA OK that all is in order (veeeery last step, probably missing things before this one).

I suppose that could be true Ulrich -- just had my 26th b-day a week ago (well, 8 days).

Scale 1 is definitely nice; though I think by the time I'm having trouble with seeing N or HO, I'll be solidly "modelling" 1:1 scale.  Here's a video of the steam locomotive owned by the historical society I'm a part of (it was taken in the 80s I think):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZXgsWpVrhY&feature=related

and one that someone took in the 70s when they were getting ready for a day's trip:

Good morning. It's 69° with 97% humidity. It'll be partly cloudy with a high of 88°.

Well as far as the color selection for the silos goes I still haven't made up my mind. So far there's been at least one vote each color. There was even a vote for the color (silver bells) on the test piece. It's a grayish color like concrete. So far at two votes each the favorites seem to be #1 (far left) stone gray and #4 the grayish brown.

1 Stone gray ******* (far left)

2 Yellow *

3 Dark green *

4 Light brown ***

5 Dark smoke gray * (far right)

6 Silver bells (test color) *

Today I'll be rough sanding the silos to get them ready for painting. I sanded a couple last night and I like the look of them. I'm using a P150 sanding cloth. I'll also hit them with the sanding drum on the Dremel. I used that on the test piece yesterday and it had a somewhat rough texture like old concrete. After all I don't want it looking brand new. And I still have to pick a color.

Dan - your eyes must be lot younger than mine. I am still into N scale, but I am afraid I will have to go back (grow up?) to HO scale again, as my vision is left a little impaired after my recent heart issues. If I had the space and the funds - I´d even go up to O scale (!) - not the Hi-Rail stuff, but true scale. Even better would be scale 1 - with realistic sound and smoke - just watch this little video!

... and my favorite:

watch?feature=playerdetailpage&v=gxy1TrXLMtY

Enjoy the sights and sounds!

At about 3,800 $ a piece, aren´t those locos a bargain?

Jeff, did you ever figure out what was the story with your Moms' chair batteries and the chager? Was it a low cut on the charger or were the batteries just expired from use? Nosey peoplewant to know.

They had most definitely expired. One would charge to only four volts and a few amps. The other one was totally toasted. It couldn't even light a flashlight bulb!

Good Morning All,

62F and occasional showers today  high around 68F. No layout time again but I did get my new car computer dash data harnesses "pinned out" and one installed and functioning ready for next week and VIR. Doing wiring stuff is not that hard as I get the harnesses made to my design and I just need to adapt what was interperted incorrectly or fix connectors that are wrong. Blah, blah...

From there we deal with a 30's Bentley today fixing the toe link on the front axel and some general cleaning/maintainence.

Did do some more over the weekend with the swing bridge on the layout. I'll try to get some pics this weekend though I'm still unsure about cutting the rails to make it active when I can still easily duck under it for now.

My prayers for those ailing and in need. Ulrich, good to see you back again on a regular basis. Hope things finally turn for the better for you.

Jeff, did you ever figure out what was the story with your Moms' chair batteries and the chager? Was it a low cut on the charger or were the batteries just expired from use? Nosey peoplewant to know. On a not related subject, my layout as of last weekend has a New Haven I-5 and three Pullman passenger cars on it as I check more recent trackwork. I think I have a gauge problem on one bridge as it seems tight (and that track is glued down right on the integral cross ties. Should be fun to fix).

Time to pick up tools and be useful.   CUL, J.R.
