Good Morning All and Happy Labor Day:

I was able to get the entire track laid on the 4x8 yesterday but I won’t be able to get back to it until Thursday.  Today is my family’s 97th reunion, Tuesday I’ll be showing my Aunt’s former home to prospective renters, and Wednesday I’ll finish the demolition of George’s layout in Painesville.  From 1915 to about 1980 we held our family reunion at Fort Megis now we hold it in Rising Sun, Ohio right next to the C&O mainlines.

The 4x8 isn’t the coolest layout but it will keep an 8 year old happy; 9 turnouts with the focus on modern coal and passenger operations.  No pictures yet, it was raining so I couldn’t pull it out into the sun for any decent pictures.

Garry HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you and your sister.

Ray, LOL, nice.  Matter of fact I have a few stories like that to share, but I’ll refrain from posting them in the diner.  Funny you mention getting stung; this past week I’ve been stung 3x just walking through my yard and I haven’t been stung in maybe 10 years.  There seems to be an abnormal amount of flying insects here this year.

Morning All,

MOH is off to a sewing sale about a hour from here and my son is working, so quiet  reins supreme at the moment. Go back to w**k tomorrow and the new schedule is Tue, Wed, Thurs. It will take a little getting used to as I'm used to doing specific things on specific days (love OCD).

I will probably run trains for a while then fight with the JMRI monster.

Garry- Happy Birthday to you and your sister. Mine is the 9th.

Todd- How is the shower going?

Hope everyone has  a great day and prayers for those in need.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and an egg sandwich please. Thanks. Whoa wait!! Huckleberry cheesecake? Hm, never had huckleberry. Had a Huckleberry Hound doll thing when I was a little kid. I’ll give it a whirl.

Ken- Sorry to hear about the house issue. I know we’re talking about BOS, but you’d think they would refi or something to get hopefully the rest of the interest off you. If the repo it, they chances are won’t get the new loan. Getting the principle back is great, but getting the interest is where they get paid.

Ray…, ahem. I don’t know how you keep a straight face and remain comment free with the wording of some questions at the museum. I couldn’t do it. Nope.

Happy B-Day Garry!!!! May you have many many happy and healthy more!!

Well, now for my trivial issues. Got the shower stall cut up and out yesterday. Turns out water lines do not come up from in the wall, but about an inch inside the wall and leaning back into the wall so the shower head line is in the wallSigh. I’ll have to move the stuff into the wall beacause with the shape of the prefab stall it was fine. With the flat walls, (shakes head)…it’s not doable. Naturally.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Mornin' everyone!

Happy Labor Day to all of you!  Happy Birthday to Garry, his Sister, and to my Father as well!  Seems like a popular day to be born.  My Father would have been 99 years old today!  This Wednesday my FIL would have been 99 as well.  Happy B-Day

Zoe, I'll have the "Farmer's Breakfast" this morning...  Two eggs over easy, Applewood Smoked Bacon, Potato and fresh Chopped Leek hashbrowns, and fresh baked country bread, with lots of dark roast coffee w/ fresh cream in my R&GV RR mug to top it all off.  Back on the farm you needed all that because by breakfast you had already milked the cows, fed and watered the calves, fed the chickens and slopped the pigs!  Then you came back in the house and had breakfast freshly made!

Currently 70°F here in the Finger Lakes under cloudy skies.  The high should be about 80° and then rain showers predicted for late tonight.  I have to get to work making one of my potato salads for the picnic late this afternoon out at my son's house.  I also have a few things to move today before the install for the Solar Panels arrives tomorrow.

Have a great day!

Happy Labor Day - for Garry's mother (twice over), and for all those who (currently or in the past) have w*rked (which might also include Garry's mother, whether it was "Mom's w**k or paid w**k, right?) Anyway, for those off from your employment today, have a great day! Hi, Flo - I'll have a glass of OJ, a Santa Fe mug of coffee, and a blueberry muffin (sliced and toasted, please) if you wouldn't mind. Thanks. Smile

Hey Garry, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

- and I brought you (and your sister, if you want to take some home for her) something in addition to that scrumptuous-looking cheesecake that Sue brought:

Do you have any birthday plans for today, Garry?

Officially, I'm 'on the clock,' as of 8:00 a.m. (and until 8 a.m. tomorrrow morning. (Hey, Galaxy, maybe you could look up "on the clock" and its origins?) Wink

Barry, if you want to make a list of what to do on your layout, I have some paper sheets with me - take some. Your weather sounds about like they're talking that we will get today.

Lee, as for the flying (buzzing kind) varmits, I just figured they were a result of our milder winter this past year. In our area, we also have had drought (116 days so far), so maybe that at least trimmed (somewhat) the amount of skeeters we have seen hereabouts. Guess Texas must've had more rain than we did, since they're needing to spray the skeeters (for that West Nile virus thing). I recall having to knock off one mud-dauber cell the past few months. I see one of those most summers, it builds a nest by the sliding door to my apartment's deck. (Maybe the mud-daubers like whatever cooler air seeps around the door? Dunno...) Best as I can recall, I don't think I have ever been stung by a wasp/hornet/dauber, although unfortunately, several years back my daughter was with me and got stung (but not bad or any swelling, just painful).

Grey day in Cape G. today, some clouds, but no rain forecast for us. Appears Isaac is heading across Ohio, etc. on its way to grace the East coast with its presence (for however long). I think we only got a total for the two days (when Isaac was moving through) of 1.6 to maybe 2 inches of the liquid sunshine. We're still way below our normal rainfall for year-to-date.

Hey, Barry, let's put our heads together about how we both can get (re-)started with layout w**k... Yeah

Blessings and prayers for a safe holiday for you all,

Jim in Cape G.

Good morning all. Bill I would like to take off but I have people to take to Dialysis. No day off for them. On my early lunch break at this time. Later have more to bring in and then those that are done with their treatment I take home.                        Alarm was set for 5:15 but I was wide awake at 4:23. Just as well for going into the kitchen to start the coffee,I saw a note from Deb. Garage utlity sink was leaking..So turned off water. As our magnetic fridge magnet says: Good morning, let the stress begin. Well one good thing about working as a driver on a holiday, NO SCHOOL BUSES.

Good morning (well it is here still). It's 85° with 67% humidity. It'll be partly cloudy with a high of 95° and a heat index of 106°.

Been busy this morning gathering all my FLV files into one directory. Did the same with my Car Talk MP3 files. Tonight I'll back them all up on DVD's. Together they come to 5.53 gigs. There were many duplicates which I deleted. I'll figure out later how much disc space that recovered. I found out yesterday that my Magicjack Plus interferes with my Nero copy program, so the Magicjack has to be unplugged for the copy program to work. I want to have my phone on in case any important calls come in so I'll have to wait until tonight to make my backup DVD's. The possibility of an important call coming in then is next to nil.

No work on the layout yet today, in fact I haven't run a train in the last two days. I think I'm having withdrawal symptoms! I'll have to run one for a bit today to get my fix.

Morning All,

Like Jeff said, it is still morning here in the Pacific Time Zone. Currently 65 with an expected high of 91.

I have the day off, which is nice, since I have a lot of housework to catch up on. Wife's white blood count was low yesterday, so she received 2 units of blood. I only worked until 4:00 yesterday so I could get to the hospital to see how she was doing after she got the blood. Doctor bills are starting to come in, ouch.

My daughters decided I needed a new computer, so I am getting an early, by a month, birthday present of a new Dell laptop. Should be here by the weekend. My current one is almost 8 years old. It mostly does what I need it to, but it can get slow.

If I do not go to the hospital and see my wife, and I get the housework done, I will slap some earth color paint on the layout to get rid of the pink foam "ground". If I can get a nice mix of a rusty rail color I like, I will also paint some track.

Gary and sister, Happy B-Day

Prayers to all in need,

   Paul

Some of those Dell's can get real slow. My mother has a Dell notebook that has a Celeron D processor and it runs slow at the best of times. Activate the virus protection on it and it absolutely crawls. But it still serves a good use. It gives me something to stack my snail mail on.

Had a four gig flash drive lock up on me after I copied it's data to another flash drive. It's no big loss. It's one of the cheaper flash drives made by Sandisk. I bought it at Wal-Mart over a year ago on sale. Upon examination I found the cause of the problem was a corrupted program. I did a forced format on it and cleared the corrupted sectors then tested it. Seems to work OK. I'm copying the FLV directory to it, so far no error messages. As solid state drives go it has really slow read/write speed. Always has from day one. It takes over two hours to write four gigs of data to it. That's why they were priced so low for sale. I bought two, a four gig and a two gig. I'll be replacing them when I can with much faster four gig flash drives from PNY. They run circles around these old ones on USB 1.1 and absolutely leave them in the dust on USB 2.0. If this one records all these FLV files I'm throwing at it I'll leave the files on it as a backup and store it with my backup DVD's. This doesn't change my plans to put the FLV files on a DVD tonight. The Car Talk MP3 files will be going onto a DVD also. Don't wanna lose them.

Evening All,

Flo I would love a piece of that pie that Sue made.

Had a great MRR day today. I ran some trains, fixed a feeder solder connection that was causing locos to bump up and down causing derailments, did some TT movements and MOH got JMRI working!!! I made up my database with my locos and changed some CV's (mainly steam whistles)Big Smile

A warm summer night here and the kids go back to school tomorrow. I cant believe its a new school year as it just seems like summer started.

Chance of some rain tonight ( hopefully) and thunderstorms tomorrow. I did a little work on the layout today after I got back from a three hour bike ride, a lot of people on the trails early today as its usually quiet when I head to them. Just sitting here now flipping through the 2012 version of the "Canadian Trackside Guide " and might go watch some TV in a little bit. Im also putting together a list of some things I want to do on the layout this week if I get time.

Evening, Janie - I'll just have a RBF please.

Thank you, ma'am!

Yep, Flip, when people are depending on you to get them there, it's necessary. Good that you didn't have all the buses to contend with today. With your schedule, do you (on school days) have them both in the morning, and then also get stuck behind them on the return trips, or is the afternoon trip at a different enough time that you miss the buses then? Just curious me, no biggee.. Wink

"Birthday Boy" Garry, Smile, Wink & Grin I'd agree with Curt (both on that being a nice photo, and about how we used to dress up to go places (and especially for a train trip, which was a special treat when I was that age!). Thanks for posting it.

Paul (not that you'd be doing a lot there, I would guess), at the hospital, they often have a public WiFi that you could use with that new laptop. But hopefully, your wife won't have to be making extended visits there. AngelAngel Sounds like your daughters know how to treat their Daddy right. Thumbs Up Hope you figure out a suitable RR brown color.

Curt, it sounds like you had one of the most productive days for the Diners in here today. (Of course, the ones who aren't in here, may not be, because they're busy doing even more!) Whistling

Jeff, I'm okay with your slightly geek-talk.[/geek on] I'll keep your 'review' of the PNY vs. SanDisk USB drives in mind. My local source (usually Staples' reduced price rack) ran through their 8GB ones for about $6-7. Now they are carrying (in the regular aisles) bigger USB drives - 16GB, 32GB and bigger. I snatched up a couple/three of the 8GB ones on sale, because the newer OS X installers can't fit on a 4GB thumb drive, but fit fine on an 8GB one. [/geek off]

Now, if we got Barry and Ray talking about music mixers, synthesizers and various audio stuff, then we'd have a real geekfest in here.. Laugh Of course, there are times when the guys who really know about cars get going and my eyes about glaze over - that's why I ensure that I have a well-recommended mechanic for tending to my car (in the words of Sgt. Schultz - "I know nuttin!!"). Smile, Wink & Grin

I took a short nap earlier this afternoon. Except it ended up that my brother (who I'd tried to call last night to wish him a Happy B-Day) decided to call me back (apparently one of the two numbers I tried to reach him with, was one with his answering machine). But I still (after we got done talking a while) got back to sleep for another hour, so I'm good with that. Smile (Did I mention he's my older brother? Whistling) He does artsy kind of weaving - big pieces, like hallway runners that he sold to one guy in Maine (think he had almost a castle...the guy in Maine, not brudder dear...). He's been doing some shorter-term (couple weeks or more) weaving teaching. If anybody is interested, PM or 'e' me and I'll send you a link to his website. I was surprised to see that a fair number of the weavings/tapestries/rugs he has on his homepage are not that big (about 18" X 30" to 4'+ X 6'). Haven't seen his looms in a while (he w**ked in biochemistry in the Houston area years ago, last time I saw him at that home), but his looms take up much of a spare room, I recall.

Won one more auction this afternoon; two more to go and then I'll have the one seller (all but 1 item) combine his to save on shipping. The other one I may or may not win - we'll see.

That's about all my news today (Lake Woebegon, it's not... ). See you all in the morning - I'm going to head home, and maybe put together some freight car kits (just so I'll have something MRR-related to report tomorrow).

Will continue AngelAngel for Diners, wives/OH's and others in need of healing, good night's rests, comfort, and several other things (mentioned or not). Speaking of which, anybody heard from Rob C. lately? Wondering if his farm has him bogged down, or what he's been up to.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Time for me to call it a night. I'm currently involved in the process of burning the DVD for the NPR Car Talk files backup. There are enough Car Talk programs on the disk that I can listen to one a week for two years and not hear the same one twice. The FLV backup DVD is already done. Ran a train today. The three GP9F's were run for a while then I parked them and ran the GP7's and GP35. Had the clickity-clack of metal wheels on rails going for over an hour. See y'all tomorrow.

Evening folks.

Jim - Yes my girls are great. In fact one of them convinced me to get one of those smarty phones in July. It was a great distraction when my wife first went into the hospital. I call my daughter whenever I have a ? about my phone, she has the same one. Thanks for the well wishes and prayers.

Garry - great photo. We were talking the other day about how we used to dress up for any occasion, going to church, a plane or train ride, even a cousin's birthday party. Not so much anymore.

Jeff - I can talk Geekinese with most folks, except the real geeky ones.

Mr. Murphy came by this afternoon and parked himself in my A/C unit again. This time everything is working, but no cold air. I have to call the repair guys again in the morning.

Since I think it is tomorrow in parts of Indiana, I will say good night.

Morning Coffee in the Diner

GOOD MORNING!!!

Bill has provided the date

There are only 112 days left till Christmas!!!

Hopefully we don't have to describe our modeling

efforts as "having gone south", but if we do

here is how the expression came about:

gone south, went south:

- failed (plan, business or financial venture) - almost certainly derived from the South Sea Scheme, also called the South Sea Bubble, stock scheme devised by Sir John Blunt from 1710-1720, which was based on buying out the British National Debt via investors paying £100 for a stake in exclusive South Seas trading rights. The shares soon increased in value by ten times, but 'the bubble burst' in 1720 and ruined thousands of people. The expression would have been further reinforced by the similar French scheme 1717-1720, based on paying the French national Debt, then totalling £208m, started by John Law, a Scot, which promised investors exclusive trading rights to Louisiana, on the banks of the Mississippi, central to USA southern states cotton trade, and the global textiles industry. 1870 Brewer confirms the South Sea Bubble term was used to describe any scheme which shows promise and then turns to ruin. South also has the meaning of moving or travelling down, which helps the appropriate 'feel' of the expression, which is often a factor in an expression becoming well established.

Gidday Galaxy, Yes I do enjoy your morning tit bits of info, even though its the opposite time of day for me, and I do appreciate the effort.

It rather reminds me of some 25 years ago when my chief engineer at the time instigated "the word of the day" to try to improve our general vocabulary. We all took turns to come up with a "new"word and its meaning and then the rest of the day everyone was encouraged to use it during general conversation, some of the results were quite hilarious. Those guys were the best crew I ever worked with.

Thoughts and Best Wishes to all Those who need them.

Cheers,the Bear.

Good Afternoon Gang!

It´s a quiet, but nice Autumn day here in the land of limited chances. I had to work down a long HD list this morning, which I did not finish completely. I just don´t feel like cleaning the car ... Whistling

Zoe, some coffee and a donut, please. Do I like this virtual food - not fattening at all and low on cholesterol!

Time for my favourite TV show - Romancing the Railroads!

Good morning, Diners.  Chloe, I will have a large black coffee before heading to the pool to swim.  I will be hard to work today.  Too many days without a schedule.

I didn't finish the pressure washer job on the deck.  Looks like the weather will hold long enough for me to finish Thursday.
