Weekend Photo Fun July 6-8
Posted by "JaBear" on Friday, July 6, 2012 12:33 AM

Gidday Folks, well its Friday evening here, looks like another frost tonight. Thoughts to those sweltering or affected by fires.

Nothing spectacular from me, just finished assembling three Accurail kits.

Have a Good One Folks. Big Smile

Cheers,the Bear.

JaBear!

Thanks for starting the thread.

I had hoped to be able to show pictures of my White 3000 cab over tractor with all the lights working. I had the headlights, tail lights, roof top lights and front signal lights all wired with LEDs. The problem was that I kept breaking the LED leads (I was using super fine magnet wire). I had to replace two different LEDs three times each because of broken connections, and the final insult was having one of the front signal lights let out its smoke for no reason that I can determine. I should also add that I was not pleased with the brightness of the fibre optics used to light the roof lights.

That did it. I am not about to be ruled by the weaknesses of magnet wire, so I tore the whole thing apart, scrapped all the LEDs and I am about to redo the whole mess with 30 ga. Kynak single strand wire which is what I used previously to illuminate a whole bunch of vehicles with great success.

Please don't hold your breath for the improved result. I am still so frustrated that I will have to give it a little time before I restart the project.

Any one else been there, done that?

I know that this is a little off topic - sorry.

Dave

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Bear,

Thanks for posting.  The 6- and 8-sided wood boxcars are one of my favorite Accurail offerings. YesCool  I just LOVE the texture of the exterior.

Pretty soon I should be receiving a 3-pack kit of Accurail PRR wood-side twin hoppers from my LHS.  I'm really looking forward to putting them together and seeing them on my layout.  I'll try and post pictures when I get them done.

Stay warm...

Tom

Nothing finished this week I have been spending a lot of quality time building a Moloco GATC RBL.

This is the kit contents, gives you all the different trucks, underframe components etc. to match the prototype you are building.

The underbody major details, with underframe, in may case a Keystone cushioning system, the PS Hydrocushining System is also included if your prototype requires it.

Ends and sides all glued to the underbody, the ends have locator pins so they align properly with the underbody and the sides fit in between.

[

A left to right view of the underbody details, including the best cushion coupler pockets I have ever seen, Brake rodding and guides, air lines from the reservoir to the ABD valve and to the brake cylinder.

Now that I am done with the underbody I will be moving to the end and side details.

Thanks for looking!

Rule 2: I make the rules.

Rule 3: Illuminating discussion of prototype history, equipment and operating practices is always welcome, but in the event of visitor-perceived anacronisms, detail descrepancies or operating errors, consult RULE 1!

I've been working on restoring my childhood(1980's) Mantua.

Here is a progression over the past few days. It's not done yet, but it's moving along quickly.

Pulled from storage years ago after fifteen years in storage.

Stripped with details added.

Primed and painted.

Gloss clear added.

Decals and flat clear added.

I ordered a new pilot from yardbirdtrains so that should help even more to spruce it up.

Jerry, nice strip mall.  That's not something you see on a layout very often but is ever present in our modern world.  Of course, to be accurate, you should probably have half of it empty with 'for lease' signs!Stick out tongue

Jerry,

Is that a AMC Pacer, third from the left?  Haven't seen one of those in a while.

I agree with Corey.  You did do a great job on the strip mall. Yes

Here are a couple of older photos of my kit-bashed diner-parlor-observation car. Silver Fountain. It is used on short passenger trains (pike-sized).

It's a Pacer all right. I have two of them. One is green, the other is yellow and is done up as a rusty wreck.

A scratchbuilt container ship on the club layout. The hull is wood planking covered with fiberglass. The superstructure is styrene. The crane to the right is a diecast replica of a Gottwall harbor crane. I still have to built a container attachment to it. The boat is the work of 5 or 6 members of the club.

Corey:  Great job on that old Mantua! Looking at the first pic, then the last,I would never guess it's the same engine. How does it run?

I messed around with some photo-editing software:

Mike, it doesn't have a motor in it yet.  I bought a replacement can motor that will be installed after I get the new pilot I ordered.  Thanks for the compliment.

Nice pictures by the way!  Is that your own layout or a club?

Thanks,Corey.

That's my layout. When my son moved out 18 months ago,I took over a couple of rooms in the basement. I've put in a lot of time down there, and there's an awful lot still to do,but I'm having a ball!

Grampy's trains:  Great detailing on that pic, especially the banks. The grasses, undergrowth, and deadwood along the stream's edge really bring the scene to life.

What a great looking ship! Is it modeled on an actual container ship (a small feeder perhaps?), or is it just an excellent bit of selective compression? It still manages to capture the feel and size of a container ship without taking up the massive amount of space required to model a typical Panamax or post-Panamax vessel.

I love the idea of having a container dock with ship modeled on a layout, and this photo gives me the hope that I may be able to do it someday without the ship occupying half the layout room ;)

Yeah,Terry,it's two of the Walthers cornerstone 2-stall engine house (stock#933-3007) spliced end to end so Big Boys will fit inside. It's a very easy kitbash, even for someone like me,who usually ends up gluing more parts of myself together than the actual model.

Thanks Tim for the feedback.

While I was part with the building of the ship, I was the one doing all the research to built it.
I was lucky enough to find a model ship builder willing to help us. To top it all this fellow knew a naval architect also willing to loan us plan of a small container ship. These plans were for a 1100 20 feet containers. I had the plan printed full size HO and we had to shorten the hull by one actual foot in order to fit the available space. We also removed one floor out of the superstructure.

The ship requires as built 1 foot by 6 feet on the layout which we feel is not too bad.

Good Grief Guys, Gidday Again!!! Its Official I'm awarding myself "The Wally of The Week Award".

Not only the wrong days but the wrong month,  talk about going backwards for Christmas, could use the excuses that I'm in hibernation for the winter, just pleased to get to a weekend, or both,  BUT REALLY !!! Embarrassed

middleman Mike, I like the weathering on the loco in your first photo, and like Grampys Trains (whose own offering is well worth the wait as usual) I am looking forward to more photos, (no pressure thoughSmile ).

hon30critter Dave, I've admired your previous postings regarding Vehicle lighting, I don't think I have the skills, let alone the Patience. The wait will be worth It.

tsage Tom, Used to be plenty of MDC Round House and Athearn BB Kits on the local shelves but Accurail kits, for some reason, have always been a rarity at least in my neck of the woods, I may have to go direct to the source, will look forward to see those hoppers.

jeff-wimberly,  like how your photos make your layout look far bigger than it actually is.

dti406 Rick, never heard of Moloco, looks good.

secondhand modeller Corey, good stuff, just goes to show that "you can get a good tune out of an old fiddle".

GAPPLEG Jerry, now I know what the term "Strip Mall" means, we'd call it" a row of shops". Looks great.

ollevon Sam & Heartland Division CB&Q Garry, its what I've come to expect, thanks Gentlemen.

jalojoie Jack, Wow Great scale compression, it looks right. Yes

Curt Webb, I enjoy being able to "visit" your layout, thanks.

"Sundown on The AMG".

Now as my reward for achieving "Wally of the Week", I go and administer to myself a swift uppercut. LaughLaugh.

Cheers, the Bear.
