Curt- well you sure don't do things half way. Sorry to learn about your problem. At least the meds are keeping the pain down.  Other than prayers , sorry there isn't anything we can do. Would that there was something .

Hang in Curt.

Good Evening..

All appointments out of the way..tomorrow will be getting groceries and such into the house....at least with my doctor I can still drive myself to the treatments...such as that is.

I also had a bit of time tonight to run some trains..and no incidents or accidents....

Angel to Ed's family....

This loco was switching at Lecheria, just north of Mexico City, and the crew invited us up for a photo..

Darren ... If you can somehow contact Ed's family, please pass on condolences from the Diners.

Here is a start of a train of condolences. If anyone cares to add more to the train go ahead.

Here's an 0-6-0 coupling the Chapel Car to the Diner.

Here are photos of the train crossing the Mrs. Hippy River. It has an SD7, two N de M boxcars, the DIner, and the Chapel Car.

Ed had interesting posts here in the Diner with many railfan pictures of Mexican Railroads.

Curt ... Wishing you the best for a speed recovery. Angel

Also, prayers for those with other issues.

We returned safely from our trip over Memorial Day weekend. On the layout, today was the first day I was able to run DCC the entire length of the layout. Yeah!

Evening All,

Well I am scheduled for surgery tomorrow at 1200. The surgeon said I have some necrotic tissue that needs debriedment and they will need to decide how to proceed after that, but that there is a chance I will need a temp drain for 6-8 weeks.

Everyone take care.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a cup of decaf for me, and a seat in the back.

Been a busy, busy day around here.  I spent 5 hours watching my Granddaughters this afternoon.  They were good but got to playing a bit rough at times!  Papa had to intervene more than once......  They are getting so they behave and treat each other better these days.

No sooner got home and had a phone call...  I wasn't able to answer until it went on the message machine and at the same time looked out and saw a white car parked in my driveway.  Turns out it was a gentleman from the Solar power company.  I went outside and we introduced ourselves...  He did the site survey, and said the roof should work very well and my current electrical box has the capacity needed to hook the system into it with no problem.  He took roof measurements, we chatted for some time, and he will have draft plans for me sometime next week.  He is also fascinated with trains so I spent some time showing him the layout and how it works.  He was not familiar with DCC, but was wowed by the hand laid track and some of the buildings.  He left with a business card from the R&GV RR Museum as well.  I hope to see him out there sometime this summer.

Soon as he left I grabbed a quick supper and headed over to the Scout Office for a District Committee meeting.

Turns out yesterday's storm according to the national Weather Service was indeed a microburst.  I was leaning toward that as what I seeing in the photos what looked like straight line damage instead of a circular pattern.  It takes some pretty strong wind to snap off 5 telephone poles that were in solid shape right above the ground!  Looked like they had been mowed down.  Several large trees were just torn out of the ground and thrown onto houses as well.  Power is still out for a lot of people over in the Seneca Falls area.

Prayers for all in need!  Is that the Chapel Car being brought over along with an OJ Tanker.........?

Evening, Chloe - I'll have a  Rio Grande  mug of decaf, please. Thanks!

Ray, good to hear that your son's place missed the bad side of that storm. That's a heap of people without power there! Sometimes a straight-line winds from a wind shear, or a tornado, either one, can do some major damage to houses or other buildings.

Jeffrey, that paint job maybe could puzzle those chameleons, I'd guess. I would think that Microscale or somebody should have some number sets in a good size for locos. Have you looked in their online catalog? Worth a shot, if you want to (re-)number a few locos. I think there's a T-J Prantle (or close to that) on deBay who has been listing some of the Champ decals (and may still have some). With most of your loco color schemes, maybe a set of white numbers would fix you up.

PA Tom, I guess you probably couldn't take those planting baskets back for an exchange, eh? (Just kidding...). Oops

We didn't have bad storms today, though we are supposed to get some rain tonight. I think some (very) scattered areas might've got their dust knocked down a smidgen before today's first round ran out of steam (well, the cooler stuff than steam, but y'know). We may get more rain tonight or at least by tomorrow. Weatherguessers this morning said we are about six inches below our usual rainfall for the year-to-date (supposed to be about 10 inches by now). As PA Tom said, careful what you wish for...

Ouch! Curt, better let them figure out and take care of whatever has your caboose ailing. Better doing that now, than possibly worse things later down the line. Surprise Good that you got yourself to the ER!

Chris, if that top photo is of one of your model locos, I'd say you did alrighty on it; looks like a Geep that's been earning its keep on the CNW. Thumbs Up How are you doing with rainfall in Iowa this year?

Ken, perturbing when track goes bad like that.Grumpy Prayers for Shaddy (and do get him to the vet Thursday).AngelAngel

HOn3critter Dave, good information to know about that automotive putty stuff. (Thanks for saving me from ever even thinking about that route for patching my models)

Darren, I'm floored by the news of Ed's passing. Sad I had just got an email forward from him a few days ago, and his recent emails hadn't mentioned any illness. In fact, he said in his last email to me, that he and Fran had just got back from a trip to Mexico City to meet up with some railfanning friends. He said that everyone was healthy then. Will sorely miss him, even though past several months we'd mostly just exchanged the occasional email back & forth. AngelAngel for Fran and Junior (who's in college there)

In looking around the forums, I noticed that Ed has been helpful for those with questions related to oil refineries, tankers and such. He had retired from a big oil company a while back, and has a daughter in Texas, as well as Fran's family there nearby where they lived.

I will need to get some NdeM cars (boxcars, and definitely a tanker or two), in honor of a good friend who was helpful to others and beyond. Also sending an email to Fran and Paco. AngelAngel

Prayers tonight for comfort and healing for many associated with the Diner.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape G.

Evening guys

School was a bust because I couldn't get into the computers due to an IT glitch. The IT deparment is supposed to have someone there during school hours, but no one was there today. On the way back I got some pizza from Pizza Hut.

I looked at the Fs I've been stripping when I got back. The MILW F7A was pretty much done, save for little bits of silver and black stuck in the grills, fans, and louvers. I don't think those are coming off as scrubbing doesn't seem to affect them. It looks like whomever painted them painted the black, then the orange. The 2 MGR/L&A F9s are a bit more stubborn though. They've been soaking since at least noon and the black has barely came off. I'll let the other MILW F and the 2 F9s soak overnight and scrub them in the morning (aparently I forgot I had that day off)

Garry, What's with the short baggage car in the first picture in your post? Is that the Walther's piker and oscar thing, or is that an actual prototype? Congrats on your dirst DCC run on the layout.

Jeff, Assuming that you stripped those 2 F9s when you got them, what did you use to strip them? I'm wondering if brake fluid would have any ill effects on the shells. The black you used is very stubborn.

Local wildfire: The smoke isn't as bad as yesterday, but it still lingers a bit. Yesterday the wind was blowing it towards my area, looks like it's going the other way today. The news says it'll likely keep burning for days, if not weeks. The airspace above the fire is now a no-fly zone for military airplanes (seems kinda strange) and they are preparing for possible evacuations. More info here:
http://www.nwfdailynews.com/articles/field-49962-base-wildfire.html

Yellow is where the fire was as of 6pm yesterday, red is 3pm today. This could get bad if the dry spell continues, and no rain is forecasted anytime soon. FWIW, I live a couple of miles east of the maps edge. According to the map, I figure this thing is about 5 miles WNW of my college, 7 or 8 WNW of where I work, and about 10 miles west of where I live. I'll keep you guys updated on this one, it could get ugly.

Don't use brake fluid on them. I had some bad stuff happen to Kato and Stewart models with that stuff. I use 91% alcohol and on some models it took over twenty-four hours to work and that was with a lot of scrubbing with a toothbrush. Bachmann is about THE worst I found on that. On the two shells I sent you there's the black but it's covered with Clear Flat which is likely what you're having the problem with. A plastic safe paint stripper should work on it.

Vincent .... The car you asked about is a Burlington MB24 branch line Baggage/RPO car. It is a 40' long car. I made it from a kit manufactured by NKP Car Company. They sell prototypically correct passenger cars for several different railroads. They sell by internet. I just checked their website, and the MB24 is on sale. The silver-painted diner is from a NKP Car Company kit, too. Five of my passenger cars were from their kits.  . .... Regarding DCC, I have been using it for part of the layout for over a year. Now, I am doing the whole layout, and that means I have several locomotives awaiting conversion to DCC.

Flip, JimCG and/or Darren: I hope you can express condolences from all of the Diners if that is okay with you. Thanks. .... I suppose I should have included a reefer for Ed's OJ in the train. . ...

Galaxy: I don't see any posts from you in the past day or so. Hope you are okay.

Also, it would be good to round up some of the long-term MIA's. Where are they?

I'm calling it a night. I only stayed up because I'm off tomorrow.

Jeff, Okay, so I have to play the waiting game on them. It's strange that it came up fairly easily along the sides, but one the roof the black is being a pain. It comes off in some spots, and in others it has to be coherced with a fingernail before is starts coming off.

Garry, neat prototype then. On the train you may want to send some firefighting equipment and water tankers my way. Preferably headed by a diesel with spark arrestors. (see my previous post and the wild fire a few miles away from me)

Good evening,

Very sorry to hear about ED. I never met him other than seeing his comments here in the Diner. Reading the various tributes, I wish I had known him better.

VINCENT: I don't recall anything about the white putty being finer than the green...it seems to w**k a bit easier, then again it might have been a "fresher" tube. If 91% ETOH isn't doing the job stripping the shells, then I'd echo JEFF's advice to use a "plastic safe" stripper. Even then, I'd use it with caution. I had an Athearn GP38-2 shell melted into a piece of abstract art by a "plastic safe stripper" once.  The vast majority of my projects are with "old" Athearn blue box (black plastic), Robins Rails, MDC Roundhouse (pre-Athearn take-over), etc. stuff so brake fluid w**ks just fine for me. It was the de-facto standard at the time. I guess the newer plastic compositions just can't handle it.

JIM: Thanks! Yes, the top photo of CNW 4291 was the first chop-nose I ever attempted. It turned out pretty well (Athearn wide-body), but the danged nose is a bit too low. It doesn't show much in the photo, but the windshield is pretty crude, made with styrene strips to fill the space. What tripped me up, and what might have made VINCENT's nose too low, was the cutting. The first cut is easy enough: just run the razor saw along the tops of the battery boxes. THAT cut comes out nice and straight. Cutting off part of the remaining nosepiece left me with a bit of un-eveness. The ensuing filing I think is what got me. By the time I did my third chop nose (CC 1601) I got smart and laid the styrene strip down. I just didn't go thick enough Bang Head. Naturally, I made the same mistake on the CNW 4547 (chopnose Geep 9), the fourth and to date, final chop job. If'n I get some P2K geeps, I'll give it another go and see about replacing the earlier efforts.

RAY: Did any of the weather geeks say anything about a "bow echo" or derecho going through? Or are they dead-set on it being a microburst? Just curious, seems everytime we've had damage like THAT around here, it was blamed on a bow echo (derecho). Definitely sounds like some form of straight-line wind, THAT is for sure!

CURT: Wishing you the best of luck with things, I guess a temp. drain means a little vacation time for you. I'll bet the ER staff was a bit surprised to see you as a customer rather than making a delivery. Based on the nature/location of your ailment, I'm guessing you'll be the butt of a few jokes....Whistling

CUDAKEN: Rerun sends his best wishes to Shaddy. Just a thought, if he's eating human food OK, but turning his nose to dog food...have you tried a different brand? I'm just thinking if he's sick, he wouldn't want any food, human or otherwise. Rerun got to where he wouldn't touch his Purina stuff. We got a small bag of Pedigree and he loves it. Just a thought.

Well (down a little, need some rain in these parts), I'd best get back at it. I'm trying to finish up a personality profile on a comedian. In some ways, he's an allright guy. In others...he's a jack-wagon. Early morning tomorrow, with a business feature to do. I was set to go to Des Moines for a full day of Iowa Boys High School State Soccer Tournament action, but Big Boss already has a man in Des Moines to cover all THAT. Just as well, it's 'sposed to be 50s and rain. Huh. Now if I'd gotten the nod to go, it woulda been 90s and high humidity...

Best wishes for all in need,

Chris

 What a day!

 Evening Folks

Flo, wake up! I need a Beer

Work Front Big pain in the caboose evening. Two pain in the butt jobs late, then 5 minutes before closing person needed a new tire. Yet the pain in the butt jobs where still in the shop!  Bottom line I walked out the door at 10:25. Sigh But made no real money, think I made $25.00 in commission.

I am going about this job all wrong! I had both Cliff (MIT making what I use to make) and Craig to train. Wanted to show them how to do something. But where are they? Not in the shop, not in the bathroom, not in the offices? Oh silly me, they are sitting in the Customer Lounge Watching TV! Bang Head

Sorry I never knew Ed, I must have joined the dinner crowed after he stopped posting. Still sad to hear of his passing. Angel

Thank you for the kind wishes for Shady health. I hope the Vet visit is not in vain. By the way, Shady is a girl Wolfhound.

 See you all later.

Good Morning!!!

I’m saddened to hear of the loss of Ed. Though I only got to see his posts a couple times since I’ve been on here, I still feel a loss. My condolences to his family.Angel

Thanks for the picture Darren. I’ve never seen him.

Coffee with an order of biscuits and gravy and a couple eggs scrambled and thrown on top please.  And a tall glass of Ed’s OJ. Thanks.

Occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 58. East northeast wind between 11 and 17 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. We sure could use some rain.

Jim- Haven’t used Terro. I don't think. I have used many brands over the years and most work about as well as the next providing it’s the time release stuff that they can carry back to the mound and dutifully feed the QueenMischief. This one is just unusually tough. Normally they show coming from one location and then some place else the next and usually only two or three times from spring through summer. This has showed from the same place like four times so far. Gone now for this is the second or third day, so we’ll see what happens after the rain.

Curt- Sorry to hear about your...Hmm...situation. Hope they can drain it soon.

Where you at G?

Good luck at the doggy docs office today Shaddy. Maybe you just have a sore tooth and don’t want the crunchy stuff. (crossed fingers)

Today I shall return the unused box of flooring, providing it’s not raining, and put this mess I call an office back into order. It will take a bit as I’m gonna go through and throw things away. Got to. There just ain’t room for it all and it has GOT to go. Gotta clean the garage up from the saws and such so’s I can get the car back in too. Might do that first as it won't take long.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Good morning. It's 76° and mostly cloudy. The high will be 88°. It will be partly cloudy later and there's a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms increasing to 50% tonight.

No plans for today. I'm not feeling good this morning so I'll probably just watch the TV today.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a large blueberry muffin with real butter and a cup (or two...  maybe 3) of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR Mug please.  I'll be in the front booth watching the clouds scoot by.

Nice day here in the Finger Lakes today.  Currently 60°F with a high around 70°F later.  It would be a grest day to get some outside stuff done, but the gout is acting up again!  I thought it was going away a couple days ago, but it is now back to throbbing and very painful to step on the foot.  Not getting worse, but just there!  have a few errands THAT have to be done today, but will spend as much time as I can with my foot elevated.

Chris, All they said in the article was the Weather people had determined it was a Microburst....  and was not a tornado. Maybe it was the Aliens??? Alien  I dunno.......  Galaxy would, I bet!  BTW, where is Galaxy?

Ken, I do hope nothing is seriously wrong with your dog!

Curt, I hope you are on the mend!

Best get a move on!  Put my best foot forward....  (Drag the other one behind me and say say things like, "Yes Master....")

Later!

Morning guys

I checked up on the Fs that I have stripping and some progress has been made. I found an extremly stiff nylon brush in the garage and tried scrubbing with it. After a few minutes scrubbing each shell, the paint is about 90% gone. The new brush is stiff enough to even clean out the louvers, vents, screens and the cast fans. After the 3 in the tub are done, I'm sticking the F7A that I finished yesterday back in to clean out the screens. In preperation for the Fs to come out of the tub, I have been modifying DW F-unit detail kits (they are for athearns) for use on the stewarts. Takes a bunch of cutting and filling, but it looks good IMO. I did run into a couple snags so far. the F9A's shell developed a crack in the nose, the F3B (technically going to be an F7B) bent a stirrup and one of the DW striker plates broke. I fixed the DW plate with some super glue, and some really good plastic cement (plastruct cement rules, the ambroid stuff I have sucks) fixed the bent stirrup. The F9A's shell will be reglued and treated to some putty (I was going to sand down the molding lines anyways).

Galaxy, Where are you? Hope everything is okay on your end.

Jeff, I don't think it'll be much longer on them. That brush I found makes quick work of paint.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Glad you found a good stiff brush to use that won't scratch the plastic. All it takes on that rattle can paint is time, patience and elbow grease.

 Morning Folks!

Flo, big cup of Coffee pleases.

This is very strange. Second time it has happened as well. I have to down load my check stubs off the internet, company does not send hard copy's. We have to mail copy's to SSI for Sues disability claims. (like they will send her anything) Yesterday I printed them out and they look like they are in Russian?

Where it says in English Earnings Statement it said Fbsojoht Tubuf n fpu on the print out?

Lot of things to do today, and I do not feel like doing a thing. Have to cash in $250.00 in quarters and go give Bank Of Stupid it's blood money. Have to run to St Louis, dump the trash, go to the store, take Shady to the Vet and I am sure Sue will add some more stuff.

Vince's Thanks for the help on the main page posting. Now if I can find the time to do anything to the Dash 9.

Far as Shaddy I am preparing for the worst. At 9 years old she has lived 2 years longer than average for Wolfhounds. Bigger the breed, the shorter there life is. The spring in her step and sparkle in her eye's are gone. I hope I am wrong, but still not real hopeful.

 See you all later today!

 Ken

Morning, Zoe, I'll have a glass of OJ in honor of Ed, and the #2 special please (scrambled, with wheat toast and blackberry jam). Thank you.

Sent an email last night to (Ed's wife) Fran with our condolences and prayers. But it's very likely that she has other things to tend to at the moment. AngelAngel

Packer, from my little bit of experience with paint stripping, some jobs take multiple soaks and scrubs, so take your time. The key on any spots where they don't come off is, if you can see the edge of the paint vs. the bare plastic, it'll definitely show up when you repaint over that. Better to go back and soak again. You may want to look at this from Scalecoat for the stubborn stuff (but test on an area that won't show, first).

Todd, I learned about Terro from my (ex-)wife, who was a farmer's daughter and they lived (obviously...) out in the country and had dealt with ants more than once. It's like others you described, where you set out a nickel(or so)-sized spot of it (on a piece of cardboard that I think came with the bottle of the Terro), and the ants take it back to the queen and all the little larvae in the anthill. I forget where I got the bottle I have (haven't had to use it in a long while, so the cap's likely stuck on the bottle of mine). Might check farm supply/hardware/other stores in your area for it. (Unless, of course, the EPA made 'em take it off the shelves as 'envrionmentally unfriendly' (to the ants - well, duh!) Okay, 'nuff on that topic... Smile, Wink & Grin Oh, you'd better get that flooring back to the store ASAP, if your weather is gonna be like ours at all(!).

Garry, I checked the NKP Products site, but wish they had more photos of the different models (or else, they assume that all their customers *know* what a XYZ RR 70' baggage car looks like...). If you have any suggestions, let me know - I sent 'em an email asking about photos.

Lawns here are getting a bit of watering about now. Sounded like some big ol' fat drops a'coming down out there...That may help our gardeners and local farmers a bit.

Without starting a big rant, anybody else notice how hard it is to find a FIRM tootbrush nowadays? Soft ones - easy; medium ones - not too hard, but firm ones - sheesh! I was shocked the other day at Wally's place to find a package of two firm toothbrushes (snapped them up right then). Better hang onto your old firm ones (for paint removal, though), 'cause it may take a while to find more.

Ken, AngelAngel for Shaddy's trip to the vet. And also some for your w**k situation to get better. What did you do when you found your two guys that were 'in training' sitting in the customer lounge, by the way? Grumpy Whistling

Am begiinning to wonder what's up with Galaxy and his being gone this long... G? Halooo?

Yesterday I took my 40 percent off coupon by Hobby Lobby, and got me some superglue packages (one of a couple of regular Super, and another with two tubes of the gel kind. Gonna try out the gel kind for some vertical joints. Also picked up another 5-pack of #11 Xacto-type blades. Got me thinking about where somebody has a bigger package of the #11's. Anyone know? (of course, if left too long, they could start developing rust or corrosion and not be as sharp by the time I got to the last of the blades...)

We had free health screenings at the office today - annual freebie, care of our nurses. Weight? Up 3 lbs. (without my shoes this year...Sigh). Not sure why, but blood pressure was up - 151/93 - while when I gave blood a month ago, it was 124/80. Cholesterol was back up (232, vs. last Nov. I had lowered it to 201), triglycerides up too much (from 199 in Nov., today 210, highest I have records on was 161), LDL needs to go down, too (and HDL I have trouble getting up, due to lousy w**k schedule and my own inertia both interfering with my getting exercise). I strongly suspect that my poor numbers have a lot to do with my eating at the local restaurant where I use WiFi often (instead of eating the healthier stuff I have in the fridge at home. Okay, need to stop talking and start doing what I need to do.

So I guess, now that I have my breakfast done, it's time for me to walk home and get some exercise...

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.
