Evenin' folks!

Janie just another cup of decaf for me please.  Looks like the "system maintenance" got done and we are back up and running.....

Rob, I'd opt for the dark chocolate as well as opposed to a one in ten million chance of winning those things.  Actually, I would probably opt for train stuff.........

Here are a couple shots of the measuring of the Coal Pocket yesterday.

Yep, the old, bald, guy be me....Smile, Wink & GrinLaugh  We measured just about everything THAT could be measured of what is still there.  We surmise that quite a few of the timbers came for some other structure as some had holes drilled in them that didn't match the holes drilled in a similar piece in line with it.  You can see that in the two timbers jutting out from the structure on the right.  Some holes were also covered by other timbers.

We haven't figured out exactly what the metal pipe was for, but think it may have been connected to sheet metal to deflect the coal either into the dump truck, or into a tighter pile if a conveyor was used to load the dump truck....

Got a tortoise switch machine installed under the new curved turnout I installed yesterday, removed some cork roadbed form a section I want to straighten the track in, and tracked down and corrected a dead short on the new trackage!  You, know, I have made enough of the Fast Tracks turnouts THAT you would think I would remember to isolate the frog before I put it on the layout!  I guess THAT is why I have a cutting wheel on my Dremel....Whistling  I prefer to use a very fine jewelers saw to cut the gaps, but can't do THAT without removing the turnout.

Snowing outside at the moment here in the Finger Lakes!  Looks like March will go out like a LION!  Where is Lion, BTW?  Haven't seen him in here for a while.

Hope you all have a great night!  Prayers for all in need...

Evening all.

Time for my rare appearance. Nothing going on tonight, so it seems I've found some time to make it on the forums for a while.

Same old stuff going on around here. Still busy with lax and waiting for school to be over (34 days remaining in high school, IIRC). I've finally heard from all of my schools. I've gotten into Northeastern, Rutgers, Villanova, Lafayette, The College of New Jersey, and Catholic, and I was waitlisted at Lehigh. Overall, six acceptances and one waitlist is nothing to complain about! I'm still not sure on where I'll be going, but I should know soon.

Northeastern is my first choice and I've decided, but the money is the thing that currently stands between me and sending in the enrollment deposit. However, things still seem to be looking good. My parents found this "Parent Plus Loan" from the government that allows you to take out the full cost of college that is not covered by financial aid. The catch is that you cannot apply for the loan until after you commit to a school. As I said, however, things are looking good, and we should come to a final decision within a week. If it does not work out, then I will have to decide between Rutgers and Villanova (both rank equally on my list and all the other schools have essentially been eliminated because of cost and/or other factors). I'll let you guys know when I finally decide.

Aside from that, there's not much going on around here. The above mentioned things are taking up most of my time, so there's not a whole lot of time for much else.

Well, that's about it for now. Catch ya later!

-Joe

Howdy folks,

I hope everyone has bought a lotto ticket, It's making the news here in Australia and is reported being a jackpot of $640 million, but you would pay $250 million in TAX!! Indifferent Here in Australia all lotto winnings and gambling etc are tax free winnings.

Still, $390 million would be pretty sweet. Big Smile

I also propose that the April diner visits down under! whats everyones thoughts?

The Chevy. Front of the Buick (looked to be 80's model Century) was shorter by 1/3rd and was NOT drivable.

Got the bill paying and buying gas done. The gas wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. $52 for fourteen gallons and a bit for regular. Forked out $95 on groceries. Have less than $30 left. Oh well, easy come, easy go. Traffic in town was really tied up on the main drag. A largish Buick sedan had rear-ended an equally largish Chevy wagon effectively reducing the two northbound lanes to one lane. And naturally everyone going past had to slow to a crawl to rubberneck the scene. The guy in front of me kept stopping every foot or so and asking stupid questions. So much so the cops were getting ticked off with him and I was about ready to bulldoze him off the road. He seemed to get the message that he wasn't wanted there and finally moved on. What a flippin' circus! After I got my groceries I made my exit from town through the Lees Hills residential area. If they didn't like the noise the heck with them. I wasn't going to slow roast in traffic.

Coffee in a  STORMY SOUTHERN  mug, please.

***Garry, is that train moving or idling? Was wondering if that one rider is racing the train or hanging on to a spooked horse. The others appear to be seasoned mounts. Thumbs Up

Had a minor thunder-boomer come through a few minutes ago. Sure dropped the temp outside.

Have a good day all.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of buckwheat pancakes with real maple syrup, a side order of bacon, and some Seneca Lake Dark roast coffee this morning.

Currently 39°F under nice sunny skies here in the Finger Lakes.  High will get up 45°F and the low tonight is supposed to be just above freezing.  Like Galaxy, we expect a bit of the old white stuff to fall, a slushy 1 to 2" with a bit more tomorrow morning.  Like all late season events of this nature it will be gone by noon.  I may go outside and weed the herb garden today.  THAT I will do....  Mowing with or without city ordinances will wait until I feel like it! Super Angry  City doesn't usually get on a persons case unless it gets really bad and stays THAT way for quite a while.  Usual concern is an empty house that nobody is caring for.  The city will come in and mow it, then charge the owner if they don't comply to notices about it.  They also have a ordinance saying you can't pile firewood in front of your house for more than a few days.....  I have had a pile there all Winter......  Just like most years....Whistling  I should have THAT cleaned up in a couple weeks.... Before Easter.

Todd!  Poor little snakes!  I don't mind having snakes on the property at all.  They keep the rat and mouse population down!  None of the snakes in this area are poisonous so I don't bother any that decide to hang around.  I consider them good luck.  Now around Naples, NY over in the Bristol Hills you will find the occasional Timber rattler.  They generally are smart enough to avoid humans!  South of here there are some Copperheads, buy they are rarely a problem as they have to be provoked a lot before they will strike.  We had a lot of them over in Waverly Glen when I lived down there.  Never heard of anyone getting bit, and I knew some kids that picked them up and brought the little ones home (and to school!).....Surprise  My son has several garden snakes in the rock walls around his property...  He loves showing his daughters the snakes and has taught them to respect and enjoy them.  There are a couple large Black Snakes on his property too.  That is a good sign as they don't mix with Copperheads.

Oh!  Happy Anniversary Barry!  April 15th. would have been my 46th. anniversary.....Sad  Still miss her after 25 years.Sigh

Bill, enjoy mowing your lawn! Ick!  (THAT guy is really strange...... Whistling  Just kidding!)

Later!

Happy anniversary Barry!Gift

Good morning. It's 62° and cloudy. The high will be 80° and there's a 30% chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms.

Well last night I brought out an F3 A/B set that's been giving me a problem. Both have Bachmann decoders. The A unit was running just fine. The B unit however while it would run the motor would rev way too high even at slow speeds and just spin the wheels as it tried to push the A unit. I pulled the decoder and tested it. Bad motor circuit. It knows only two speeds. Dead stop and pedal to the metal. Changed it out with a good one and now the set runs like it's supposed to. Fortunately it didn't damage the motor. Changing out an Athearn motor in a Stewart chassis is NOT how I like to spend my day.

Speaking of things to do, it's come that time to pay bills again. So I'll take care of those that I can here then go to town to pay those others. Also0 need to get groceries and gas. That last is likely to be 3/4's of a $100 bill! And people wonder why I don't go anywhere!

Good Morning!! Coffee and.....what's this black stuff? Oh. What's Ray doing with coal in his pocket? Never mind. It's Ray. No telling what he's got cooking. Anyway, I'll have the BBQ ribs and half chicken thing with ummmm, oh let’s see… how about potato salad and give meeeeee, ok. The baked beans with brown sugar and molasses please. Thanks. That reminds me. This year things should be mellower than the last what 5, so I’m going to for sure make Ray’s potato salad.

A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 74.

Grass. Hm. Well, part of the issue is I didn’t cut the grass the last two….maybe three times it should have been so it was tall to begin with. Then we all know how the season started so, I kid you not the grass in the back yard in the “well fertilized by the dog” half is in places over a foot tall and thiiiiick. We must feed the dog pretty good healthy stuff that promotes foliage growth. Kinda a two for one deal we got goin there.Yes

We do have an ordinance on grass height as well. Don’t know what it is for sure, I’m wanting to say 6 or 8 inches. I do know mine was, in areas, above that level last fall.Whistling

Inside the house, no critter othern those personally selected, are allowed to live if possible. Outside however, is a different story. All creatures with wings or legs are allowed to cohabitate with me until such time as they become annoying, or a threat. Paper Wasps are not allowed to construct residential districts near entrances to the house. The distance is determined kinda on a whim so…no official setbacks. Once a creature becomes a pest, then they are evicted in the quickest manner possible, or thought of, at the time. No exceptions. They of course are allowed to return IF they behave themselves. The only exception so far is that cute little hellion..., the rabbit. What a rascal. They are NOT allowed to even sit in the yard and if spotted will be chased out. If you’ve had rabbits in your yard, then you know why. They are only second to an Armadillo in the not really welcome category. Now, notice I said with legs or wings. Fins could be added, but that would be silly. Me and snakes do NOT get along I don’t care WHAT anybody says. I see a snake it dies. Or at least an attempt on it’s life will be made as well as a good ol fashion snake hunt. I know what they do, and I know what they don’t do. I know the facts about harmless and venomous snakes and which ones (more like one) we have in this area and that the likelihood of me having that one in my yard IS only slightly better than me winning the lottery. Which would be the same as being mauled by a Polar bear and a Black bear and a Sasquatch at the same time. Minus the Sasquatch in the case of running across a Water Moccasin in my yard. All that makes no difference to me. None. There are plenty out there and there are plenty places for them to be. They don’t need to be around me.

Still no call from the countertop people. Hopefully today. That will mean delivery not until next week though. I don’t know why they say 2 weeks all the time. With Mom it was like three or four. Still they do an excellent job and not much more than the box stores, plus they fit it to the imperfections of the wall AND deliver for free. Super plus, if it breaks from their shop to my house and on the cabinets as long as they are there, they redo for fre….well, no additional charge.

Back to mowing when the grass gets drier. Until then, who knows what.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Got my gas yesterday. Saved $1.70/gallon on 16 gallons so paid only $2.359 a gallon! At $4.02/gallon, it was almost like getting half off! But it DOES cost in groceries thoug, so don;t know if one saves a lot or not...

Ran errands and went to my father's house for a visit.

Todya i am recouping after yesterday's rain gave my back {and legs} a bad twist like it always does. Makes me in some agony when it rains, regardless of temperature. PAin killer not working well when the rian set into my bones.

Speaking of rain, we could get 2" of snow tonight/tomorrow!! Mainly higher elevatiosn they say...

MOH has the day off and is starting some spring cvlening I haven't gotten to yet. Makes me feel guilty I can't really help.

Well, a man neaby town was arrested for animal cruelty for purposely running his car over 3 puppies!!! I hope they throw the book at him!!! 2 died instantly and one is in serious condition.

HAVE A GREAT DAY

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a refill on the decaf please.  I'll be sitting by the stove in the back trying to get warmed up!

Spent a very interesting day at the Coal Pocket!  Yep THAT is what they were called, and I now know they were very common and most every little town served by rail had at least one.  My friend, the County Historian, spent some time this evening after he helped me measure what is left of the one I am modeling, doing some online research and found two articles in the Geneva Daily Times (which is now the Finger Lakes Times) about a Coal Pocket the PRR wanted to put in on the yard off Niagara St. in Canandaigua in 1952.  These structures were were considered very dangerous and there were plenty of accidents on and around them.  The residents of Niagara Street sued the city of Canandaigua for giving the PRR a permit to build it.  The city revoked the permit and there was talk of building it at the edge of the city in the PRR yard on Ontario Street extension.  In June 1952 PRR was saying they weren't sure they wanted to do it because they already had $2000 invested in the Niagara St. project.  But!  Where they were talking about puts one right where we were today!!!  Eureka!  So we now can date the structure to late 1952.....  The Historian is going to check to see if there is a building permit on file for it at city hall.  If there is, there may be sketches of the coal pocket with it!!!  Keeping my fingers crossed.

The guy from the Ontario Pathways Trail Association was there and helped as well.  He is also interested in what we can find out, took a bunch of photos of the two of us working at the site, and will put an article in their newsletter to see what he can find out for me....   This is getting more and more interesting.  for every question we have answered, two more come to life......

Later!

That's how my sister's dog is. He has actually gotten hit by the full brunt of a ball coming off of my 8 iron a few times

He's ok, but still hasn't learnt that when I bring that 8 iron back, there's going to be a lot of power behind that ball.

Hi There Fellas

Had my air rifles out this morning giving them a wipe down with a silicone rag and cleaning the barrels on a couple of them. I havent used them alot lately but am really starting to get the urge to go out back and pick off a few soda cans and soup cans. I have amassed probably 60-75 tins of different pellets which when not being used for a great deal of time I store in old army surplus ammo cans. There great because they keep air and moisture out which doesn't allow pellets to oxidize, which insnt really a problem with pellets today anyway.

A Coffee refill, please

***Johnboy...Bow

***Jeffrey, glad you got over your physical issue. Enjoy Mother Natures show. She could be visiting here tomorrow night.

Below is the bright, poorly painted sign previously mentioned. Looks like there are new customers at the door, so that much is good. Wonder if they are paying customers? (I know, sign & structures sure could use some weathering some day)

About time for evening critter rounds here.

Wish me luck tomorrow boys. My school's got our "Dave Christiansen Annual Powerlifting Meet." This year through, it's not the two schools going head to head.  Now it's powerlifting class against class. I'm competing this year in the 175 weight class. Opener for bench is 175, opener for deadlift is 385, going for broke this year. Lock and load baby.

If you can read this... thank a teacher. If you are reading this in english... thank a veteran

When in doubt. grab a hammer.

If it moves and isn't supposed to, get a hammer

If it doesn't move and is supposed to, get a hammer

If it's broken, get a hammer

If it can't be fixed with a hammer... DUCK TAPE!
