It's the closest operating rail line to my house...it's one of the subway lines in Los Angeles' Metro Rail system...the closest station is just three blocks away.
When I was in college, I worked for the Soo Line for three summers, '66, '67, '68. I was 20 the first summer. There could not have been a better summer job for a lifetime railfan and modeler. Anyway, my forum name, Soo 61245, was my employee "number" those summers. It was on a rubber stamp that we used to stamp our time sheet each time we worked. I still have my stamp, switch key, lantern plus lots of great memories.

An "EF-3 Yellowjacket" is the road designation given to one of the most powerful-and heaviest-"motors" that had operated on the New York, New Haven, and Hartford railroad. At 4680HP, and the "4-6-6-4" wheel design, she had all of the trappings of another 4-6-6-4-the Challenger.
These hulking giants were used primarily on the car-float operation between Cedar Hill yard in New Haven and Oak Point; their presence often sighted on the Hells Gate bridge. Oh-and did I also say that-upon start up, she could draw 9,000HP down from the 11,000VAC cantenery. Must've given the head engineer at CosCob plant conniption fits if more than one were drawing form the same grid at the same time...

My grandfather was a marine corpral in Korea, fought through the Chosin Resevior, and my Dad was a 1st lieutant (a MP) in the marines during the 80's. so I geuss it runs in the family.
I currently model an broken down short line branch line in minnesota during the modern era. The branch line serves two grain elevators, a fertlizer company and a gravel company. there is a junction with another branch in one town. There are so many weeds in between the tracks that if tthey killed the weeds, nothing would hold the rails inplace (look at this link http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=357469&nseq=6)
Also I love narrow gauge railways and I have a soft spot for british railways.

When I was a Royal Canadian Air Cadet a long time ago the Squadron Training Officers used the USMC basic training manual as their primary guide when teaching us leadership methods. Those experiences formed my life as much as my parents did.
You should be proud to have set yourself the goal of becoming a USMC officer. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Rebel says it all, I usually do things differently, many times just being way ahead of my time. Railroad example, I use white beaded foam for layout base because it can be had out west and I can get it free a lot of times (but I did do research into the flammability thing and found the fears unwarranted). Get the biggest non railroading kicks out of those investment salesmen and advisers who try to say 11% return is fantastic as I always got around 35% and did it by putting all my eggs in one basket too, a big mistake is you ask these so called professionals. Sorry for the rants but these guys are always calling but I have finally joined the 21 century and have caller ID now!

TA462 Anyone that was a teenager in the late seventies lusted for black Trans Ams. The ones that had the better 400 cubic inch motor had T/A 6.6 on the shaker hood scoop. I swapped a bored .30 over 455 Ram Air IV motor out of a 70 Trans Am which now is 462 cubic inches into my 78 Trans Am and had replacement decals made that say T/A 462. TA462 was my name on a old Pontiac site so I kept it when I registered here. I'm sure a few beers helped in my decision as well.

Used to run various combinations of the Ram Air III and IV in Sanger V drives (flat bottom-boat) Even though I loved those BB Chevy's could never keep the bottom end intact, especially running over 7K' The Pontiac will stay together all day long, just as my other fav MOPAR...

I'm a fan of Anne McAffrey's sci-fi books about dragons. Every time I attempted to use "dragonrider" someone had already taken it. So, I used the second best which was "dragenrider".

The Milwaukee Road had a siding near where I grew up, east of RapicdCity, S.D. called Murphy Siding. A couple miles east of it was one called HO Siding. I'm active on some car racing sites, where people know me as Murphy. I have a unique first name, and an hard to pronounce Norweigan last name, so Murphy works out quite well.

I wanted a handle that says what I'm into - I love steam locos from the slide-valve era and shays are my favorites. I fell for shays when I did a research presentation/paper on them in the ninth grade. I like everything about them: the asymmetry, the complex driveline on just one side, the "stuck in first" sound of the engine, the slow speed with enough pull to drag down the moon if there were a chain long enough, everything. It seems like shays and I were made for each other - Ephraim Shay and I even share the same birthday.
When I first tried Shayfan as my handle, it had already been taken, so I added my zip code. I figured that would give enough of a clue as to my location. I have since relocated, so my handle has become partially obsolete. I seriously doubt that I'll ever stop being a shay fan.
By the way, my avatar is the buckin' horse of the University of Wyoming - where I went to school.

I'm the Capt. of a motor-sailer and John Grimek was a youthful hero of mine. We were both from New Jersey. He was an early weight lifter. All natural-pre hormone horrors. What they used to call a "Physical Culturist" :-) I still weight lift for a work out-when I'm not skippering on the "Inside Passage".
There be salty vessels on my port based layout so Capt. Grimek is the mythological Supt. of the Black River Junction Terminal and Belt LIne R.R. The crews let him think that his word is law along the river and the division.

Back in the day, (sixty years ago) My Lionel railroad was called "Great Western Plains RR" But after falling in love with the Western Pacific and moving to HO, the name no longer fit properly. We have a Lake just north of us called Last Mountain Lake and I always found it an interesting name as there is no mountain close to it (500 miles) But I thought by adding the Eastern it actually moved the location further west.
At the time, I had an uncle who was a Station Agent for the CPR, and I heard him talking about the various "Hoggers" and also found that handle very interesting,,,,, so the two just had to go together for my forum name.
The Last Mountain and Eastern has been the name of my layout for over fifty five years and I have old "exchange Passes" to prove it.
