I was working on the Front Range GP7 shell today and found that it's very brittle and breaks easily. This makes it unsuitable for use. I replaced it with a Model Power GP9 shell. It fits on easily enough but has open pilots so can't be held on by the coupler pockets like the original shell. A little hot glue at the sides took care of that.

Good Evening.

Had a relatively quiet day here..not too many issues showed up so i spent part of the day in the office getting some supplies requisitioned for later on this month...

mmmmm...after checking out with the neighbour it occurred to the two of us that he did have enough space in his garage to put up what we are going to refer to it as..a murphy layout...established as a form of murphy bed...bed folding upright into a 6-8 foot tall cabinet/closet affair, this layout, with buildings still attached will fold up into a wall unit approximately 14" deep....we are looking at any ideas for how to achieve this idea....Smile, Wink & Grin

Chloe, I'll have a coffee for now please...I'll be at the RC for a bit...

Evening again.  I think I'm going to have a large chef's salad with fried chicken in it, sprinkle a few bacon pieces over the top and throw some ranch and honey mustard dressing over all that.  I will also have a tall glass of sweet tea, please Janie.

Well, I think I'm about to head off to bed here soon, I'm pretty tired as I didn't go to sleep until almost 3am this morning and then had to w**k all day.  I'm a little tuckered out, but at the same time I know that if I try to go to sleep now I'll just end up being woken up by Amy and the girls when they get back this evening.  Oh well, what to do, what to do?

Barry: I have to admit that would be interesting to see once its complete....it would also somewhat conveniently make almost anywhere into a suitable layout space as long as you could fold the unit down and have room to move around it.

Welp, my salad is here, so I think I'll enjoy it and see what else can happen for a bit, then I'm going to go and get some rest.

Rob: Actually that was me on the wire posting, but you're welcome nonetheless.

Well, I just got an update from the wife, she's about 2 hours out, so I guess I have enough time for a little nap....

Watching Doctor Who. Yea, I'm an old addict and have been watching that show since the Tom Baker days.

Been watching it since the early 80's. Also seen Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. Also a special called The Seven Doctors in which all the doctors up to that point had to team up against a common foe.

Decaf coffee, please.

***Bama, I knew that. I must have had a brain fart while typing. Sheesh, where does my mind go sometimes. I left the water running yesterday and would have drained much of the storage tank had there not been a lucky kink in the hose slowing the flow. Whew!

***Jeffrey, I never saw The Seven Doctors. That would have been interesting. I also watched Torchwood but not Sarah Jane's Adventures.

Being a child in England in the 60's I was utterly terrified of the TV show Dr. Who and in particular the Daleks.  I was so scared that the first few notes of that theme tune would send me screaming from the room.  There were many nights when I simply could not sleep.  My parents made sure to turn the off knob to stop me and my brothers from having to suffer.  I have probably only watched a dozen complete episodes and even today find the tune evokes an unpleasant feeling.  I can't think of anything else that scared me more as a child!  Needless to say I have never been a big fan.

***Simon, that's ashame. That tune always brings back wonderful memories of a girlfriend I had at the time. We watched many an episode together. Anyway, to make this train related, on tonights episode, there is a glimpse of a train running across a high trestle into an Area 52 pyramid.

I got the Front Range GP7 as complete as it's going to get. I got everything on the frame but the swing hangers. Those darn things just wouldn't go on without breaking. The Front Range shell is another matter. It basically started disintegrating every time I touched it. So after a while I decided it was time to pitch the shell. The chassis now sports a Model Power GP9 shell and it looks good on it. It'll give my friends who are Model Power bashers a reason to wonder why it doesn't make the noises those locos make.

We drove up to the train show in Berea, Ohio this morning. Although it was chilly, windy, and rainy with plenty of mud in the parking lot, it wasn't a bad show. Looked all around for Lee in his orange Coast Guard hat, but I didn't spot him. I also didn't buy much, but saw plenty of pretty nice deals. Just nothing I really needed. Bottom line is that we had a good time. We already have our motel reservations made the show in Timonium at the end of the month. That's one I try very hard not to miss each October, if for no other reason in that it's a nice weekend get away. The weather is suppose to be chilly with rain tomorrow, so I doubt if we will be doing any railfanning. Oh well, pleny of things need done around the house anyway. Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

Thayne ... I'm glad you visited the diner ... Welcome .... Feel free to stop and chat here. Perhaps, Ulrich will have some German Apple Strudel available.

Jeff ... Sundown Shops is still very busy!  I wonder how long before the paint shop patches that BNSF Geep.

James from Oz ... Its' good to have your visits from the other side of the world.

Rob ... Have you had much layout time yet? with all that hard work you are doing with fence posts and so on?

Ray ... Good that you are active in your community.

Galaxy .. I hope your flooded community can get back to normal.

Ken ... Sorry it was a boring day. Bummer. You have so many great model railroad items, and perhaps next time you can keep busy with that. I enjoy my "sanity breaks" in the train room when the rest of the world is crazy.

Are there some MIA's who missed the flight to Germany? I hope not. Maybe it's just a little jet lag.

Happy Model Railroading.

Finally got the swing hangers on the Front Range/Model Power GP9. Just drilled the holes out a little bigger. I need a little time to think of these things. The idea has to get past all the clutter in my mind. I'm not as smart as Sheldon (Big Bang Theory). I have to lose 40 IQ points to get as smart as Sheldon.

***Garry, nope, sure haven't. Though, I have been thinking a LOT about both the layouts while out on the farm. Didn't get much done today other than gathering and staging materials for fence work tomorrow. The other day after hammering fence nails into 3 posts, my hand was shot (numbness). It is going to take me a long time to actually finish this project. That said, progress is good, at least for me it is.

Good evening Diners! Rain ahead of Ophelia (who is set to go by us as a Cat 2 Hurricane on Sunday - but we hope far enough out to sea as to not actually "sweep us off the cliff" (Vicar of Dibley reference for those into that sort of thing) Some of the following are topics from the last Diner, some days ago...

Ulrich: WE'll be thinking of you Tuesday at that interview - and the exams coming up as well. Thanks for the smooth transition - had my wires twitched for a moment with that "closed for the month of October for refurbishing (or whatever you actually said LOL) remark. Thought the whole shebang was being upgraded, again! (Big Groan).  But, if Vinnie and the girls are busy upgrading, who are our staff now?  Getting a stand-in for Vinnie should be easy for the others, are we to expect any of these?..

...  Seems to be a definite Octoberfest theme going down here...iconland has restaurant staff, but nothing distinctively German, that I could see from a cursory glance at any rate.LOL

A month's tour of Germany sounds like a great idea - the Rhine this time of year is spectacular isn't it? ( Insert icon for "that's a question, not a statement from experience") The modules are fantastic! The town scene shows just how much real estate one gets per square cm in N - let's cut out that subversive talk of going to O. Whistling

JR:

Der, Could have been a flat spotted wheel too. They had one on the vestibule end of our dining car on the way out and it was unbelieveably loud. Besides TV doesn't have a really swell rep for research anyway J.R.
...in the context of the show, the 30' effect was the expected norm. In that context, the Sheldon character would "know" the line is welded,(since he was, in the episode, full of interesting data on the car they were in, where to sit to avoid the uncomfortable places due to the suspension characteristics, and which side of the car to sit for the ocean view.) He would protest vigorously if he suspected a flat spotted wheel, probably moving to a different car! BBT's writers are generally very "current" when it comes to scientific references. In that he did not protest and / or move, I have to conclude that the line is not welded rail - or the writers goofed!

Update on BBT - this last week's new episode has Sheldon buying an HO trainset and ending up with N Yeah! (Incidentally his original plan was to buy O ("O gauge or no gauge" - but he was seduced by the size of HO, before being lured deeper into right thinking) Now all we have to do is to get the writers to say "Scale" instead of "Gauge"! Laugh

Ray:

Der, love THAT picture!  Took a bit for me to figure out what it was.......
- that was a cat Ray. - Oh you meant the bridge picture. Embarrassed

Todd:

Equinox...sounds reasonable. My sleep has been altered suddenly other than those three nights. Last night was an all nighter for me at least, so that's backYes, but I wake up every 40 minutes to an hour. Go back to sleep, but 40 minutes to an hour later, I wake up. This has been going on for just shy of a week.
...welcome to my world - but my pattern is a bit more user friendly - as in every 2 hours. This has been going on for years. I'm finding some help from Green tea together with Niacinamide in the evening. Neither are very expensive, nor are they "Big Pharma chemical sleeping drugs".

Well, finally got some productive mrr time the last few days.  That means the orchard is as complete as I want it for now.

(I might think about wooden fruit crates and some bee hives, but there's not much viewable space to put them - prototypically they are against fence / hedge lines and so wouldn't be seen, so is there any point?   http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/General/Oct12011Orchardandchurch4.jpg  Yes, I would know they were there, and that's not unimportant (Sorry for the double negative Chris - but there's a reason!) The reason being that I'll be moving forward in the scene and have finished the parking lot and placing the church, including a sign board that I've cobbled together. That's as close up as I could get the camera to focus - all the words are there, the smallest in 1.7 point. And our Churches' logo is the real deal. So, from the nearest viewing point the sign will still be tiny - But I'll "know it's there"!Cool

Sue:  I'm usually one for turning on the lights in dark photos (MS Office Picture Manager - a good basic program already loaded with Windows 7) the way Ulrich did. Your night shot however had the look of real night-time. For me, most night shots or movies are way too bright. My 2 Cents I wouldn't have known until Ulrich shed some light, that the orange shapes in the foreground were locos, but the buildings look very convincing for nighttime.Thumbs Up

Thayne:Yes, If  not the coolest, then certainly very close to the coolest place in Cyberspace! So, thanks for dropping in. Care to tell us a bit about your mr or mrr interests?

Ken:

Guess he never heard of Ford Thunderbolts!
...I hadn't either  - the only mechanical Thunderbolts I've encountered (although not physically at that) are aircraft. Specifically, this bad boy   the P47  Thunderbolt for which the A10 Thunderbolt 11 is honourably named. Talking of engine size / performance, the P47 was the largest and heaviest single seat fighter to be powered by a reciprocating engine - or so Wikipedia says.

Galaxy: You've had a very difficult year, and all this flooding around you again and again. Hope it gets abated pretty soon. Thanks for your intro for Thayne. I didn't know food pics were no longer postable - and I know many other types of subject are frequently shown here. I'm very used to posting any sort of graphic that's "General Forum" acceptable. I think I'll wait to be hauled on the carpet before I change my ways. ...and please don't anyone report  me to the Chief Beagle!Crying My 2 Cents

Simon: Found one from the 60s by the B&W look!

Ulrich says it's fish for Dinnner- bring it on!Dinner

Bed time again (well virtually time for dinner then bed) Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

John.

Evenin' folks!

Just a decaf for me please......

Been a great day here.  We had a wonderful party for Rosa in honor of her turning 80 (last week).  Met several of her children I hadn't met before (I have known two of her daughters and one son for many years).  She had 7 children and opened her house to many families moving into the area who couldn't find decent housing when they first cam here.  It was said at one time there were 27 people living in Rosa's house while they looked for affordable and decent housing here.  Most of the people there are either family or those folks she has helped so much over the years along with a few other very close friends.  Total of about 70 people were there.  I was very, very honored to be invited (only 7 or so, ah....  should I say fair complexioned folks there....).  I gave her a group of photos I have taken of her over the years, all with some of the flamboyant hats she is known for wearing.  Several times people stopped, did a double take, dropped jaw, and said, "Mr. Howard!  OMG, how are you?"  Saw a bunch of students I haven't seen in years!  Fun Day!

Got home, changed my clothes, and headed for the train room....  Some stuff came in today's mail from Fast Tracks.  Bought a bag of PC ties as the tracks in one curve at the Quarry seem to want to go slightly out of gauge.  I will put them in every so often to get it back in specs.  I did a bit more scenery, and was about to start w*rk on the rails, when my sister called.

She had called me within a few seconds of the time I had left to go to the party....  Then I noticed on the machine she called back a couple minutes after THAT.  I have the "Hello, USA Prime Credit. My name Peggy...." as my phone message.  She was still roaring 5 hours later when she called after I got home....  Says those commercials are her absolute favorite!

Got an email tonight THAT Rochester Gas and Electric #1941 is ready to come out of the shop as today the decals were installed, and all they have left to do is a few odds and ends...  Been a long process (about 6 years) for restoration.  Any of you who are interested in seeing photos of the Before, during, and present of the 45 tonner go here.  It is on SpaceCrook, but is supposed to be public....  If you watch it as a slideshow and the "you must sign in to continue" crap pops up, just click cancel and keep going with the slides......

I get to w*rk train crew tomorrow at the museum.  Sure hope they light the stoves in the cabooses! Brrrr.

Hope you all have a great night!  Stay warm and dry.....

Ray ... Did you really have THAT message on the recorder? ,,,, Funny

Rob ... I think it is better to get the non-model-railroad stuff all done and out of the way so you can focus on the layout work. ... Sometimes the other stuff won't quit unfortunately.  I finally said to heck with everything ese, and I'm getting my Union Station section close to completion. Then it's back to the other stuff which is now falling behind.

Der John ... That church sine is really remarkable. Keep it up, and soon you can write Scripture on a grain of rice.

Tom in PA ... Glad you could get to a train show.

Good Morning Gang!

I hope you enjoyed your day in Hamburg yesterday. Miniatur Wunderland is some sight, isn´t it? I have been there 6 times, and I still find something I have not seen before.

Today´s agenda will take us to Bremen. On the way, we will pass by our place. We will take a tour of the city, and then head for Bruchhausen/Vilsen to take a ride on the DEV museum line.

Here are some impressions of what we will see today:

We will have dinner in one of the little restaurants in the famous "Schnoor" quarter, a part of Bremen having retained its medieval character.

We will have some very traditional food there.

But today´s highlight is, of course, the steam train ride!

Have a good time!

Good morning to all of you!  Thanks to all of you who gave me a warm welcome! I have popped my nose into the diner a few times. I figured i would give it another try to be apart of the group. I guess it's my turn to buy? So today the food and drinks are on me! I guess i should tell you a little about myself, I am 47 years old i live in sandy utah, (usa) I have a great wife we have been together about 20 years. We live in a small house our 3 kids( no kids together) they are all grown up the only kid we have left at home is our boy/dog snoopy (snoop) a 7lb malteese, I am a truck driver by trade i drive the semi's for the company with brown trucks. I'm sure you know the company i mean. It's the one we all are happy to see or mad as heck when our train stuff is missing, late or damaged. I model HO scale, and I am getting ready to start my 2nd layout attempt. I belong to the NRMA and also to the USRM (Utah scale railroad modelers)  I would classify my self as a beginner. I enjoy making any thing as long as I have a project,  Life as pretty good here is Utah, So if any of you have any question about Utah, trucking,or woodwork or home improvement, Please ask away! I will be the one asking you guys/gals all of the silly questions about modeling/railroading. Thanks again, Thayne!

Welcome - Thayne (even if it is a little late Whistling)

This month, the diner is on tour throughout Germany, where I happen to live. The diner is being moved to a new location each month - usually it stays on one location, but after touring Canada in August, I´d thought it´d be nice to jump over the Big Pond, so I can show you folks around a little.

Food on tour is being taken care of, but you are welcome to jump in for the drinks. It´ll be Beer for tonight, as the place we´ll have dinner is a brewery/restaurant! It is alcohol free stuff, if you want to go down that route!

Does Utah still have the road signs "Don´t litter - keep Utah brown?"

CUL!

Morning All,

MOH is making biscuits and gravy for breakfast (a good southern gal) so I decided to look you fellas up. Plans for today is to get the layout curtain up, work on a couple of cars that I got for free, a flat car and  a 8K tank car and  put them in service. I would also like to take a look at the directions for the roundhouse for the first time and do some switching on the layout. I will probably be lucky to get half of it done.

Thayne- Welcome to the group. This is my favorite part of the MRR site.

Ulrich- Nice pic's. Are we going to be going by Berchesgarten (spelling?). I was during to the club yesterday and I started thinking about how beautiful  that area is.

Everyone take care.

 Morning Folks!

 Flo, Lemonade please.

Thayne Welcome to the dinner and hope you keep coming back.

Well got a little running around to do today, about a hour worth then the rest of the day is free.

Hope to get my butt in gear today and start re-motoring a few engines. One I like to get back on line is a Athearn RTR SP-50. But first, I got to Modified the darn Flywheel Puller. Bang Head Only one end will fit is where I can press off the darn flywheel!

Well I will drop by a little later.

Good Morning!! Coffee please. Lots of coffee. Thanks.

Thayne- Welcome Stop in a set a spell! You’re more than welcome to join us.

Out of style or not, I like slotted mags! I often wonder why the United Statesian cars sold in other countries, vary so much from those sold in The States. It’s not that way the other way around that I’ve seen. Other than the right hand drive jobs. You think they still joust over there or is it just more tradition? Could make for an interesting Sunday drive through the country.

Barry- Murphy layout? That sounds like a great idea! I would say sliding attachment and center pivot legs and of course end legs for the end out and a sliding block would probably be sufficient for the wall end.

Never cared for Dr Who. Don't know why. Just never got into it.

Simon- I had the same type thing happen to me when I was young. Except it was an episode of the Twilight Zone. The original. It was the one were the Ventriloquist dummies were “alive” or possessed or something. Can‘t really remember the plot. I’m not usually one who gets scared from watching something on a screen. I’ve always had a sense of what’s real and what’s not, but that episode..., gave me nightmares for a long time. I still have a vivid memory of the end when the dolls head turns in the box. Sounds of little feet scampering around. Ooo. (shiver) creepy episode.

Oh, maybe I’ll have some Strudel after all.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Good Afternoon,

boy, am I in a low mood! Can´t go outside, the moment I leave the door step my heart starts to race and I feel sick. So I am confined to our flat and cannot enjoy the beautiful fall weather we have these days.

I switched on the idiot box and watched "Free Willy". I was not interested in the rather dull plot, but seeing all those pictures of the beautiful Pacific Northwest really made me homesick. How I miss to be there.

Not much of a good sport today, I am afraid.

Good morning, Chloe.  It's a good thing that my passport is current.  I will have coffee, please.  I am saving room for that same plate that Ulrich has.

Ulrich,  Glad you had fun playing with my photo.

Der,  I looked at your photo a while before I figured it out.  I think it is photo that you should submit in a photo contest.Thumbs Up

Today we need to bring some of our cut wood in.  This afternoon, we have an operations session with our local MR group.  This will be my 2nd attempt at dispatching.  In November, there will be some visiting MRers operating.

Later,  Sue

Anything is possible if you do not know what you are talking about.
