Coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please.

***Garry, I must have been in a daze. Please extend a belated  HAPPY BIRTHDAY  to your mother.

***Ken, if you get really bored, feel free to come on over and you can help me build some fences. Seriously, I sure hope you don't lose your house.

Can't get the Polaris Ranger to idle at all. Turned the set knob in both directions but have been unable to get it to keep running without pressing on the accelerator. Dang!

Hope y'all are having a good day.

 Evening Folks

 Flo, Beer Please.

Well today was like getting a hot cinder down the back of your shirt. Did some switching at the grain elevator and had fun. Started to get inspired to work on the layout and took inventory of the need ground foam, paint, and such. Pulled out some forgotten boxes and found round 40 forgotten rolling stock and engines.

1:30 PM, was hungry and feeling just a little lite headed. Decide to go eat at Taco Bell. After that I was going to Home Depot to see if they had a cheap meter so I could check my motors one last time. Took for what seemed for ever to get 2 soft shell taco's. Felt about the same and figured it would take a while for the food to get in the system.

2:00 PM got to Home Depot and could not find any meters in the tool department. Finally found a employee that said he was a electrician! (hum, must be a bad one if he is working at Home Depot"  Showed me where the meters where and asked what I need it for. Told him I need a meter that would read DC Mil amps. Told me they did not have any. You would think a $150.00 meter could do that and wire your bathroom. (not that I was going to spend $150.00 for a meter).

2:30 got back to the car and started feeling worst. Went to Wendy's to get a sugar soft drink. $1.09 for a small soda? No wonder I drink water the few times I get fast food. Still did not feel any better and decided to head home. I was with in 200 feet of Wal Mart, I was going to get the printer while I was out.

Got home around 3:15 PM and wife is out with the daughter. Could not find the blood sugar monitor so I could not test my blood.

Decided to head to the garage / train room. Things did not get any better! Box I had sat out to ship Jeffery's stuff has vanished a long with the peanuts. (sure wife grabbed it up)

Next I wanted to run the trains, bad idea. Railed up some of my old treasures I found. Man, only way there could have been anymore picking if Roy Clark had been here. At one point ( there is a pun) a car picked a #4 turnout out for a runaround that leads to the passenger station rails. A long came the Y6 b and took out the observation car and ran threw some closed point and derailed at the next turnout.

Never seen this before Instead of the Digitrax SEB DB 150 sending out the 3 beeps for a short, everything shut down! No LED reading on the DT 400, and the power light on the DB 150 (one that is green) was all so out. After re-railing the SEB came back on and all the decoders seem to be working.

Well, I am done, see you all later.

Must have been me sending out negative vibes!  Don't buy the printer yet, save your money, I may have a solution for you.  I'll know for sure tomorrow.

Evenin' folks!

Janie just the Turkey Club Sandwich, side of fries w/ gravy, a trip to the salad bar, a cup of decaf, and some extra metformin for me right now...... (Diabetics should understand the attempt at humor here...)

Did a bit of cleaning in anticipation of have some family over to the house a week from now.  I sent out invites early last week and have had only one reply from a nephew saying his family can't attend....  For the last several days I have been finding both in the house and outside what appeared to be carpenter ants at first glance.  3 days in a row one was sitting on the counter next to the coffee maker.  first day I mumbled under my breath and disposed of it quickly.  Second day it took me several attempts to get it...  I finally took a closer look...  Not an ant at all, just looked like one.  Anybody out there know what it is?  Got rid of three wasp nests on my own porch today as well.  Don't think the company would enjoy sitting on the chairs with a paper wasp nest a couple inches from them (under the slat board chair....).

Currently getting very dark and cloudy outside.  Just checked the weather for where Galaxy lives.  Hope he is high and dry.  They are talking 2 to 4 inches of rain tonight in Binghamton, NY and 4 to 7 inches in some nearby areas.....  I have to be out at the museum tomorrow while it is raining and we could have 35 mph winds as well...  Wonder if they will shut down for the day.  The Finger Lakes is right on the edge of the Low to Moderate threat area..... The line appears to be moving to the West......... Huh?

Later!

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a decaf as usual for at the moment.

Jeffrey.... Cool!

Got a phone call from my son a while ago.  They came home from vacation a day early.  Spent all day driving in fairly nice weather.  Don't think they would want to be driving home through Connecticut tomorrow........ Whistling  They went to a couple Aquariums during the week and I guess my #1 Granddaughter can already identify several ocean fish...  She is a smart one at 4. Smile, Wink & Grin

Hope all of you on the East Coast are able to stay safe and dry!

Oh, it is definitely Storm, Storm, Storm, and an Umbrella may not help. It is POURING here..has been since aobut oh a burst went trough about 7-8 pm. After that, rain settled in and has been pouring. We are thick as thieves in it now.

MOH is worried about gettting to work tomorrow, and if there, about getting back home. There are a lot of RR underpasses along the way so MOH may have to take an alternate time consuming route.

Good Morning,

Saturday I installed the tracks to the coal mine, installed a new kitchen faucet in the 1:1 scale kitchen and cut the grass.  Today I’ll be out in the garage building the first parts of my rolling stock cabinet for the layout.

Curt set the ballast like you want it, mist it with 70% Isopropyl rubbing alcohol, and then drip 50/50 water/glue on the ballast.  The Isopropyl breaks the surface tension of the ballast and allows the glue to “run around” the ballast to lock it in place.  I add enough glue/water to make the area look soaked.  If your trying to do the side of a road bed or steep bank I will brush on a thin layer of straight white glue to the incline first.

yougittawanta: LOL!

Ray, we have wood boring bees up here, not much of a problem unless you live in a wooden house like me…

Good morning. It's 71° and mostly clear. The high will be 103° (feel like 106°) and it will be mostly cloudy.

If you went by the weather here you'd never know anything was happening on the east coast. So far we haven't received any grim news from my sister in Pennsylvania.

Yesterday I took the time to sort my Kadee coupler boxes by type. #232 (with ears) in large pill bottle labeled for Kadee 232 coupler boxes and #242 (no ears) in a large pill bottle labeled for Kadee 242 coupler boxes. I also did the same with my couplers. #5 in one bottle, #148 in another and so on. I now have bottles containing four types of Kadee couplers. #5, #148, #118, #119. There are also bottles for EZ-Mate 2, McHenry #71 shelf couplers, McHenry #41 metal coil scale coupler andlast and least EZ-Mate 1 and McHenry plastic spring couplers (glued shut for use as dummies).

I also got one of my L&N piggyback trailers ready to be changed from L&N to L&A. I'll do the same with the other one today. I should have the L&A decals on them today. Instead of L&N Piggyback they'll say L&A Piggyback.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the rainy day big breakfast, over easy on the...  dang!  I keep forgetting we're in Canada.  Make them as soft as you can, OK?

Irene has made an appearance here in the Finger lakes and will be controlling the weather all day....  Getting rian and some pretty good wind at the moment.  We are right at the outer edge of the massive storm, so it should not be terrible here.  Calling for constant rain and thunderstorms and 25 to 35 mph winds with gusts up to 50mph....  Me, I have to drive to the museum and open up.....  Not looking forward to it today!

Best get moving if I am to get out there and get everything opened before they cancel the trips today....

Later!

 Morning Folks

 Flo, coffee please.

Well last night did not go any better than the day did. Went and ate, then got real bad Heart Burn. Had to try sleeping sitting up till around 1:00 AM. Then, well lets just say I had to go to the small offices a lot for a hour or so. Whistling

This morning,I have a bad rash. Hurts to sit down. Plus I still feel sick to my stomach. Not been a great 24 hours. When I get done here, I am going to lay down and see if I can get some sleep in.

Rob Wish you lived closer, I been happy to help with  the fences.

Barma Yes I have thought about working in a parts store. Big problem for me is I have bone spurs in my ankle. If I stand for 45 minutes my left foot starts to hurt. 2 hours and the left ankle starts to swell and I can hardly walk.

 Well, heading in to Zzz

 See you all later.

Good Morning Folks,

the last couple of days saw me down with a bad migraine. It is not gone yet, but OK for me to get out of bed and eat.

Zoe, a cup of chamomile tea, please - I am still feeling a little sick.

I hope that all of you NY State folks stay safe while Irene is paying her visit to you!

Ken - hope you get better soon and get positive news on the new job.

Blessings,

Good Morning!! Coffee and um….why’s the Buffet up? Oh! Must be Sunday. I’ll have that thank you.

Hm, still no Bill?

Don’t even talk about my yesterday. I will just say the good part was it cost me no direct out of pocket expenses. I got abso-LUTE-ly NOTHING done.

Brenda wanted to have our own little NCIS Marathon yesterday, so..., I thought carefully. Work on something I should, or sit in a chair and spend some time at home with my wife….while watching Ziva. Turned out to be a no brainer. Watched first three discs of NCIS season 8Yes. Brenda accused me of having a crush and a mental affair with Ziva. Don’t know where she came up with thatWhistling. She informed me however, that wishing for your crush to get together with someone else is not exactly the normal way to go about it, but…, it works for her. And that sometimes not having the brightest husband in the world, works out pretty good. HmmI'm not not sure just how to take that. I then, of course, reminded her of her insistence on watching the shows that have that guy who’s the FBI Agent on Bones in them. He also played Angel the Vampire. Yeah, try and get her away from the TV when THAT guy’s on there. She, of course denies it. She did get a real good laugh at my “why Ziva reminds me of you” theory. She says she “in no way looks a THING like Ziva”. She did admit that once upon a time….maybe. A bit. But to her, if the face is different, or any part of the face is different, no two people look anything alike. I then brought up babies. I said, you run around and look at newborn babies that ALL look the same, and claim they look like so and so. But she looks at an adult and if they are not spittin image twins, or related, look nothing alike. She did admit to the similarities in our behaviors for the first couple three years of our relationship, once I got her to dismiss the running from bombs and tackling parts. And of course the over dramatization for ratings purposes. AND (and this is a plus) she said that Tony is funny like meBig Smile. So I got THAT going for me. Wait…. I just realized she never said I looked like him. Odd.

Ken- Once again I find myself in agreement with Ray. (Imagine that) Canon makes a great printer and they are very inexpensive for the quality of print you get. How do they do it? Volume. The more you sell the cheaper you can sell them. They have that built into their printers. After a certain period of time they….stop turning on. Yup. Nothing. So what do you do? Repair? HAH! Can’t repair it for the cost of a new one, so, get another. Brilliant. Is that bad? Well depends on how you look at it. Every year or two, depending on foreseen profit margines for Canon Corp, you buy a printer that in reality due to it’s cost, makes you wonder if you should even buy ink refills or just get another printer when they run out. At least it’s new I suppose.

Today I am tired. Don’t know why, just tired. Didn't stay up late either. Brenda just left to go see her Mother this morn and asked if we were going to finish season 8 today. Let‘s see, another entire day of Ziva Confused…... Definite possibility. I think I like this spending time at home with the wife.

Now I I’m starting to wonder what she meant by “funny”.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Good Afternoon All,

Got through the hurricane with just a couple of minor leaks and some water flowing through the basement and out the drain there so no depth to it. Shop was mostly intact with no power and none expected for a while as there are multiple trees down there.

More concerned about our folks south of us in Fla, NC, Va, and NJ as they caught it a lot worse than we did. We should get the tail end of the storm soon and then it's just waiting for the rivers to crest. Hope the rest of you are ok.     J.R.

And people wonder why I don't buy Canon printers anymore. Because they don't last! I don't buy LexMark printers anymore either. They have a nice low price but the cartridges cost WAY too much.

Afternoon everyone,

We're almost through it. We'll still have rain and wind for a while, but the worst of it is gone. Where I'm staying (five miles from the beach), there's not much, but I've heard that other parts of town, particularly near the river.

We still can't get back to the shore house. I've heard that there's not a lot of major damage in the area, but the entire barrier island is still underwater. Looks like we'll be staying here another night, hopefully able to get out sometime tomorrow.

Hope all of you who were also affected are fine.

Catch ya later,

-Joe

 After noon folks.

Flo, I take a diet Dew please.

Well, I am starting to feel normal (I use the term loosely) today.

Did a quick Train Room clean up, seems Simon 1966 and his sons Andrew and Crispy are coming over for a visit! Big Smile Plus Simon is bring over his meter so I can finally sort out which motors are junk and which ones are keepers!

Cannon Printers Well, I got what I paid for! But for $28.00 I cannot complain much, some but not a lot. My first printer was a Lexmark 3200 and it last for 3 computers! But as stated, refills cost a lot! I think the black was around $28.00, cost of a Cannon printer.

Joe Hope you get home soon and find no damage to the home.

 See you all later!

Hello Diners: Only 40 pages behind from where I last bookmarked a glance through the window. So I won't try to catch up. Roast chicken dinner today, with the first zucchini of the season. (yes, we are supper early this year, NOT! ) There is however a good crop of grapes - so long as they ripen. There's only so many green grapes one can work away in stir frys!

Mrr? Well, 4 weeks ago today we had a visit from some Alberta friends  we hadn't seen since we left there.  Their younger daughter wanted to do something on the layout, but since the track is so cruddy nothing will run until it gets a good de-grunge, I bit the bullet and got out the tree planting stuff.  Together we made a small start on an area just across a drainage ditch from my plastics factory.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/General/Sarahsplanting1Aug72011-1.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/General/Sarahsplanting2Aug72011-1.jpg

Inspired by this I have continued with working that road cut, first on the side that we started,

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/General/Aug132011Roadcutsouthsidetrees.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/General/Aug132011Roadcursouthsidetrees3.jpg

Then  on the other side, which is largely an access hatch, the edges of which have to be obscured with trees and bushes. I did the lower edge first, working up the slope some.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/General/Aug142011Accesshatchtrees1.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/General/Aug142011Accesshatchtrees2.jpg

It was then I realized that I had better plant the hill side above this scene, because I was going to have to lean over the existing planting to reach any of that back there.

So, that's what has occupied me for about an hour several evenings since. It's slow work as I want the dense forest look that's common in Nova Scotia, and this hillside of mainly spruce type trees has to transition to nearly all deciduous on its far side, to represent the trees on the hills flanking the Annapolis Valley. Here's how the thing has progressed up to last night.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/General/Aug202011forrestation3.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/General/Aug242011forrestaion1.jpg

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/General/Aug272011forrestation1.jpg

The trees are all dried weed or garden flower heads with ground foam or sawdust  glued on with hair spray - or grey primer as the grey gives a not-too-bad trunk colour.  Yes, the ground foam does coat the trunks and large branches, but I scrape that off with the jaws of the tweezers I use for planting just before popping them in the scenery. My scenery base is painted sawdust/white glue mix. It's been dry for about 8-9 years now. So I soak it first for some hours under an old hand towel that's really wet. This softens everything up making planting holes with a needle file a cinch.

Some time back (when the Diner was visiting Truro, Nova Scotia)I posted a pic of the train mural on the VIA station there. It was old (2004 IIRC) and incomplete. Here's what it looks like now.

Todd and Jeff:

Ken- Once again I find myself in agreement with Ray. (Imagine that) Canon makes a great printer and they are very inexpensive for the quality of print you get.

by Jeff They have a nice low price but the cartridges cost WAY too much.
The printer we have now is a Cannon MX340 an "All-in-one". It's giving us the best printing of any printer we've had ( Epsons, Lexmarks, HPs, and maybe more than that.)  the ink cost  thing we've got beaten into a semblance of reasonable by an outfit that re-fills cartridges. (and don't the manufacturers hate THAT! They try to stop them by electronic gizmos in the cartridges themselves, it's a sort of "arms race". ) Ribbon's Recycled (http://www.ribbonsrecycled.com/)is the one we use as they are "local." As local as our LHS, that is;  2 hours away.   I've got the Fax tray covered up with a sheet of gas station ad plastic (my preferred free source for styrene for structures) which will stay there until needed for construction of more city high rises. (The fax machine we brought from Alberta 12 years ago is working just fine for sending - and I don't need to receive, although there is paper in the machine.) The plastic is so I can use t he top as a table without things falling into the Fax tray!

Well (been in no danger of drying up this year) I'd better get this posted.  Wind's picking up a tad, but the sun is still trying to shine.

Thoughts and prayers for the families of those killed and injured by Irene.Angel

Cheers, John.

Lexmark printers! Had one. Pretty good printer too. But, you are right as to why I got rid of it. Bought a Brother MFC-465cn for the price of one set of ink refills.

Afternoon All,

MOH and I hung a new mult-light fixture in the train room today, so I can actually see up there now.Idea Next weekend MOH wants to put up the kitchen back splash (tile). We have laid several tile floors so we have the tools and know how. We special ordered them from Lowe's since with my daughter's employee discount we saved around $200 and MOH was happy with the glass tile.

My parents will be here shortly and my Dad and I are going to run trains for a little bit then go out to dinner. He will be the first person to operate on my layout besides me.

Der5997- Looking very good. Don't you just love those Bang Head moments in this hobby. I have had several myself.

Todd and Lee- Many thanks for the help with ballasting techniques. I can't wait to get started. I think I will do the yard and sidings first then the mains.

Everyone take care.

The Mantua 2-8-2 is now a runner. Still has the same motor in it. Just had to tear the motor down and give it a good bath in CRC 2-26 to get out the crud that was in it. It runs quiet and smooth now. Low speed operation is good considering  it's around 40 years old.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, hot cup of decaf to start off with.  Then I'll have the seafood plate, fries, a trip to salad bar, for desert a hot fudge Sundae....  Say is THAT still Irene outside?  Big Girl isn't she.....?  Real hurricane if you know what I mean....

Been an interesting day to say the least.  The drive to the museum was uneventful except for the occasional  50mph crosswinds blowing most everything on the road around.  Particularly the high profile vehicles (Semis, Vans, and such).  Saw at least 80 or so Bucket Trucks on their way to Albany and south here in NY.  One of the young guys at the museum said he and a college buddy (another member) drove to Buffalo yesterday for some event and they saw a couple hundred of them all heading down the thruway towards Albany.  NYS Thruway is now closed at exit 24 due to Irene.

I ended up being the only docent at the museum and today of course we had a Tour bus full of people show up and ride down along with a Birthday Party (one of our members) just an hour later.  So it was a much busier day than usual.  Everything was going well until they brought down (from the other museum) the Birthday Party crowd (Lot of kids and young people).  The track cars rolled in and the drivers said, "We got a problem..."  Wind (which wasn't bad out there - half what it was here in Geneva) took down an old dead tree which fell over onto the power line for the trolley up at Midway Station (transfer point).  I entertained the 5 other people who where at at Industry Station while the Birthday group got to see old Kodak #9 RS-1 get fired up and had a walk through of the cab.  Soon the Manager of the NYMT showed up to start figuring out how to take everyone back to the other museum....  We shut down an hour and a half early today.  Had a bunch of gate crashers who never did pay their admission but just parked in our lot and came into the station.  We usually look the other way, but one family decided to go hiking up the working tracks walking between the rails......  They got yelled at by the track car drivers who then yelled at me who checked and found the president and vice president of the museum were already up escorting them down the track.  They got down to where I was standing looking a bit sheepish, so I asked them if they had already been spoken to about their indiscretion.  The father assured me they had so I just tried to add why they shouldn't be walking down the center of any RR tracks... Wink

Printers....  I have 3 sitting right here next to the old Mac G5.  My oldest is a HP deskjet 1220c wide carriage printer THAT can print out up to 13 x 19" prints.  It is at least 16 years old and is still chugging along.  the original one of these i had actually wore out after a couple years of use, but for once I had spent the money for extended warranty coverage and it got replaced for free....  Doesn't get used much any more but still prints just fine.  The workhorse is the Samsung CLP-510 Color Laser Printer.  THAT is about 10 years old and has been rebuilt once.  Best price i can get for toner is a place online but the black toner cartridge is still about $80 for it.  the color one are a few dollars less.  Lucky the Black cartridge will last about 5000 standard pages...  It was used hard back when I was in business and printing CD labels and inserts professionally.  the other is my second Canon printer.  As has been said, they make a magnificent color photograph printer.  THAT is all I use it for.

Der/John, good to see you back in the diner.  I had been thinking about you with the strom heading up THAT way.  looks like Irene ended going West of your place.....

Prayers for all those that have been in the path of this powerful storm!

Evening Dinners, hope your day was as good as mine! Yes

By the way CANNON PRINTER ARE THE BEST! Details later. Whistling

Flo, just a Beer please, BBQ some chicken tonight.

Why was my day so great you ask? Simon 1966 and the boys came over and they and I had a blast. I think it was one the few times the boys would have rather stayed longer. They where doing there version of the Great Train Chase. Seems Andrew took a great liking to my Southern Pacific SW 8 switcher and spent a good hour chasing Crisp Dash 9 around the layout. Caught the Dash 9 a few times and ran some hoppers of the rails. Seemed to tickle the heck out of them. None of the cars where damaged (well that I have found yet Laugh) and with the way i have been running trains into each other, why should I care?

Mystery of the Goofy Motor amps readings. Simon brought over his meters and we started testing the motors, readings where still bouncing all over the places and some showed 12.0 amps being pulled. Yet they where still cool to the touch. That just cannot be right!

It has to be the DC transformer I was using for testing! Then I remembered I have 4 Life Like DC Transformers that power the lights on my layout! Unhooked one and started testing over. I now have 6 good PK 1 replacement motors that freewheeled at .011-0.16 amps and stall was around .80 amps! Yes I all so have 5 good Athearn replacement motors as well.

Best news is the Athearn F7 B motor is all so good, now all I have to do is speed match the A&B units and I will be dragging in style.

Only bad news is my PK 2000 SD 7 Rio Grand is pretty much dead. Crying One of my favorite engines. I installed a Athearn DC Plug (the plug you have to pull to install a decoder) and we test ran it, it started smoking. But, I have a motor that will fit!

Jeffery Tested on of the Stewart's, run great if you want the top speed to be around 5 MPH. Yep, motor time.

Bless Simon Big Heart. He bought and brought over a Brand New Cannon MP 459 printer! (OK folks bite your tongues).  It is a up grade version of the one I have now. I have not opened it yet, but it sure will do what I need! Heck, I would have been happy with the old one I had that goes for $28.00.

Simon, you are one of the best!

Well Chicken is done, I be back after I Dinner

Hey, I just breathed life back into the motor of a 40 some year old Mantua steamer and it runs great. The Stewart has a motor problem? Bring it! Wouldn't be the first Stewart I fixed.

...Yes, that's right, hardly going to be in New Brunswick much....BUT that doesn't mean it's not packing powerful winds, even this far away. The storm surge is raising concern in the Bay of Fundy, and along our shore a bit as well. Lucky for us, it's high tide now; before the storm gets opposite us. Dick (Greyfox) has had over 4 inches of rain today, with Irene's track pretty much right over him.

I'm off to see if I can plant some more forest.

Cheers, John.

Well,

while areas around/close/near me had problems...mostly flooding and trees down I/we came through Irene fine. Power stayed on {which is good becaue the substation is located in a low-;ying area that can and does and has flooded before. Worst part tehn is waiting for the substation to dry out before they turn power back on}. No trees down around us nor flooding in my immediate area. SO all in all good.

I DO have a nasty migraine bought on by Irene and the change in Pressure. SO MOH came home from a dull day's work, ate and went to nap, but usually does not wake up til morning. I took all my night pils and the sleep-inducing ones and will soon be in bed for the might a little early myself.

So see you in the Morning!

Hope all is well with those in the path of Irene!! Angel for those that need them!
