John, one of the Coast Guard Stations I was assigned to had a problem with field mice. The building was built in 1925 and there was no way we could plug every hole and the exterminator we hired couldn’t keep up. Me and the guys went to the animal shelter and asked to adopt the largest, meanest cat they had. The shelter was skeptical, but we got the meanest thing they had on 4 paws. No mice, no snakes, no frogs, no sea gulls, squirrels, rabbits, heck fish swimming by took a wide berth….

We had 3” of ice in the drive, salted everything at 0600 then again at noon, then the neighbor came out with his plow and hauled all the ice burgs to the tree lawn. All day the sound of spinning car tires filled the air as people tried to get out of their driveway.
I added decals to the “Soule Grain Company” Elevator last night and weathered the loading sheds. Tonight I’ll cut the foam for the base and start to detail it off layout. Then I can finish the NE corner of the room.

Well, we got about 14" all told here..nothing like what happened in Chicago...that Lakeshore was a mess...sorry fergie ...so our total snowfall here is approaching the 130" mark...quite ridiculous this...
Today I have some things I have to pick up and groceries to buy...then it off to pick up some more scratchbuilding supplies so I have stuff for the scenery I have to build up..again...

Aw, It aint so bad now is it, it may accumulate a little, and disappear rapidly as your temps rise. Around here, IT STAYS for awhile!
And we don't wash wash our cars but once a month or so on a WARM day {described as around 30*} to get road salt, sand, dirt and sludge off them. The rest of the time they are filthy filthy filthy! We don't was h them as the locks and doors will freeze and then that renbers the car useless to us as we can't get into it to use it!
So look on the bright side, keep your heater going and your pipes exposed to heat to keep from freezing and you WILL survive!

23F but no wind and some sun this morning. We've had snow on the ground and temps below freezing since Dec26th now. Longest period with the ground covered we can remember and we've been here since the 50's.
Lee - I have a couple of those motors - I will try to get them tested and you can PM me with details at your convenience. The chassis they are in are early Bachman so hopefully they will fit what you have.
Charlie - thanks for the tip. I have some IHC and Rivarossi cars converted already but since the plastic couplers don't last forever, I thought it best to get some spares plus I have a bunch more unconverted cars I'll need for the layout once I get further along.
Lots to do again today. We venture out the 19th this month to Florida and the start of the season. Cars in pieces, not enough spares and lots of lost time due to weather. CUL, J.R.

Currently 20°F under nice sunny skies here in the Finger Lakes. Time to get out the shorts and the sun tan lotion I guess. That white stuff is melting off the roof this morning (at least on the sunny side) so I probably should turn on the Ice melters for the eaves. Ice dams on the roof are not a good thing.
Have to run some errands today after I finish assembling the CDs for church. I am going to donate the rest of my "stock" to the church so I probably will take a few boxes of CD trays and cases down for them to store as well. Then get my allergy shots and do some grocery shopping. Then I will move to the train room for the rest of the day.
Lee and Todd thanks for your kind words on the workshop. It is coming along very SLOWly I guess. I had hoped to have the whole Quarry area done by now and it seems to just be getting under way.....

Went to Wal-Mart this morning to get the remainder of my grocery shopping done. There was a crowd in there all competing for 'essentials' like milk, bread, eggs as if there was some dire calamity about to befall the area. The weather guessers have folks here so panicked that they think a major blizzard is coming in. Come on people! It's maybe a 50% chance of snow flurries that will be on the ground for one to two days tops. And a ruder bunch of people you couldn't ask for. Jostling, shoving, pushing, forcing their way through aisles. I watched two guys get into a shouting match over of all things a box of Ritz crackers when there were still several hundred on the shelf. I guess they thought that box had something special in it. It seemed also like people were just grabbing things, even things they likely couldn't even use. Flashlights but no batteries for them? What are they going to use to make them light? Good wishes? I wonder, is there some TV or radio channel out there that I'm not privy to that's telling these buffoons there's some big blizzard or other dire calamity coming and that it's perfectly OK to act like a bunch of jack***es strung out on locoweed? Where do these people come from? It's the same on the roads. People cutting others off, making illegal turns across traffic, one guy making a U-turn on a 4 lane and driving back the wrong way in a one way when the proper lane is only a few feet away? I wouldn't blame the local cops for just sitting, watching and staying out of it. They were probably scared stiff!

Woot~! `Sight for sore eyes' brings new meaning to the phrase. Well we've been hit hard.. and then some. What most of you folks don't know we lost our family business, not only that, my wife is losing her job in 4 months. Oh yes.. It never rains in California.. it only pours. But we're in good moods these days. We've hit hard but not that bad as others. We'll still have our house but the recession is taking its toll. Such was not the case when all this came upon us. Its rather a frightening thing to wake up one day and realize that fate deals its best hands last, and certainly not its good. I guess you play the hand you're dealt and thats it. But aside from getting over sleepless nights and general malaise.. lol.. we've come out on top and feel very victorious. I personally am happy for the true wealth in my life, my loving wife and 3 kids. I think how we deal with a crisis and our outlook on life is what really makes a recovery or a healing of the mind obtainable. Its been hard but we're OK now.
Now for something New and Totally exciting... you remember that African Lion Hound.. you know the pup my son rescued from the animal shelter? The one he was told was a mix of Lab and German shepard. The one that came with wobbly legs and could barely walk?
He had been indoors for some months in cold weather up north with my son.
Four days later he had some muscle tone running with the big doggies.
I kept watchin this pup grow.. Are you sure he's a Lab/Shep mix?
He ran.. he ate.. he slept.
I kept telling my son, this dog is going to be a big one~
Everyday he grew.
We even took him camping.
Well "Buddy" came back with my son for the Holidays and this is what he looks like.. quite a handsome devil. I am told he is even bigger than this pic.
It was quite a storm to drop all over us... the sky was dark and I was yelling at Buddy to come inside before the big downpour.
He was too busy watching the fish.

KEITH!!!!! Though I'm very sorry to hear of your losses, I'm certainly glad that it wasn't worse as I was beginning to think. At least you're still around.
Jeff- Sounds like the loonies we have here have moved down there. Don't forget the big game on Sunday too. Many are probably making sure they have their chips and dips for that too. The dips I'm referring to are the kind you dip your chips into. Not the dips who eat them.

Regarding the converstion about couplers on Rivarossi cars. I prefer mounting long shank Kadee couplers to the car bodies. I also add weights to the correct amount. These changes make the cars work well without derailing and unwanted uncouplings

African Lion Hound Never heard about the breed before, but sure is a good name. One of the things I enjoy being a Wolfhound owner is telling people I have a Irish Wolfhound. Just sounds neat.
Things are sort of looking up for me, I do have a job now. Think I will do well with the company. Just hope it not to late to save the house. If your family business had any connections with Bank of We Don't Know We Are Doing of America I understand why your business closed! They have my mortgage now and they just plain keep me confuse.
Train Front While I was off doing my running today Simon 1966 drop off my new motors! I tell you for $5.70 each they look nice. Darth Santa Fe said they are the same motors BLI use in there engines. It is hard to get my self motivated to work on the layout not knowing if I am going to get to keep the house. But, if I do have to sell my fleet, they will be worth more running.

Jeffrey- I try to do my shopping at Walmart {24 hr kind} very early in the AM like so I am DONE and out by 9 am-9:30 Am {after I get my deli stuff which opens at 9}. That way I avoid a lot of people as I get claustrophobic when surrounded by people- part of my anxiety/mental disorder. It is no different here in parts of the country where snow and storms and blizzards are the norm. People still panic and rush to the grocery stores to panicly stock up on whatever their hands can grab....without thinking aobut whether or not they may be able to cook it or not if the power goes out. Things like Ritz at least allows one something to eat by candle light if the power goes out and I hear Texas has been doing purposeful rolling blackouts. It is also the first of the month so the food stamp people are out in droves to stock up their food piles. MOH has been working the front end playing cashier the past two days...complained of the zoo-y-ness of the ordeal as people paniced over the storm, and the WIC and Food stamp people come running in. SO not unique to your area/weather.
Ken- I have firmly believed that when you take outa mortgage with a company it should stay with that company for it's duration, rathing than being bought and sold left and right. If BOA gives you any real grief...ask them to produce your original loan documents...if you didn't tkae teh loan out with them, it's likely they don't have them as they only bought a "paper" which included your mortgage amongst others. That will stall them off for awhile, but if you miss a payment, or fall short of a payment, be sure to save taht amount in another bank or CU so you can produce it when it's demanded to save your house. If they are really gonna foreclose you without a doubt, then save that money to either put down on another house, or to have to pay rent to move somewhere. I guess perhaps it's good you didn't have the funds and plans to build your new layout in the garage yet as you don't know how much longer you will have taht garage. Too bad, looks like a nice house. Not telling you what to do, just offering what the proffessional financial advisors on TV advise others in similar situations. Now that you are working and earning $ again, I would also pack away as much cash in liquid cash accounts in various banks so you have some $ to hopefully avoid future problems should you get laid off again.
Well, MOH automatically went to FIL house to scatter Calcium Chloride on the icy drive and to do the trash. That way there's no fight over it. FiL called to say somehting, don't know what yet, as MOH is talking now, will find out later. MOH beat FIL to the punch this time!

People stocking up.- I went to the store today and the regular bread shelves were empty. Not even dust or anything. The guy from the Wonder bread distubutor was there and stocking the shelves. All I can say is wow. And today the store was packed with people refreshing supplies.
Not much from me on the layout. Been paving a road with blasting sand, regular play sand and some play sand with a bit of black ink in it to represent gravel. Looks pretty good to me. Put some markings on one section I did the other day and got the second section done today, just waiting for the glue to dry. May dullcoat this one to knock the shin off and then make some patches. Even have a small construction site going. Once it's done I'll post a pic. That is if I can find a camera

Well so far we've had none of the 'gloom and doom' ice and snow storm the weather guessers have been harping about. As for today's earlier 'ice from the sky' ten minutes of light sleet does not an ice storm make. I've seen worse 'ice storms' in my freezer!
