Well the interview went well, and as long as the back ground check/drug test comes back clean.....I have a job. Its about 32 hours a week and $8.80 a hour, oh and 3rd shift.
Now hopefully in a couple of weeks the NS interview will go good!!

Got the driveway cleared. We did have about 4" of very wet heavy white stuff. It is still kind of misting out from time to time. Liquid sunshine is what we call it in Scouts. I think this may be the last year for my old 8.5HP MTD Snowblower. Starting to have issues. It is about 8 years old I think. Won't ever start without my taking the spark plug out and spraying starting fluid in the cylinder first. Originally had an electric starter on it. That died early the 3rd. year (broken plastic gear inside I bet). Now the transmission works sporadically. Didn't want to move anything today until it got warmed up, then it works fine. The housing is getting rusted up in a few places as well..... I may take it over to one of the Mennonites who works on small engines and have them give it a going over come Spring. They may be able to get it back up to snuff for a few more years......
Need to feed the wood stove and then disappear down to the train room for a while.

Big news! The giant green snow eating machine…..is just that. One snow eating machine. Or, as one guy said “wow! That thing really goes thru the snow doesn’t it?“ Of course not quit like the combines setup Garry showed up with, of which my buddy has a smaller two auger version he attaches to the back of a field tractor, but it chews up 2ft snow and sleet without even a grunt. Of course the ends of the driveways where the village plowed up to 3 and sometimes close to 4 ft, it did have to make a few stabs. None the less there were several shovelers who were mighty impressed. I don’t think so much about the snow monster, as much as just happy I was moving from drive to drive and chewing them out. Didn’t do bad on fuel either. I’m happy. Best yet, remember I told you a friend from down the street, (grew up across the road from him too) helped unload the beast? Probably not, but he is a firefighter and was in Peoria and guess what? His wife was not having luck with their snowblower and it quit. Me to the rescue. “Put those shovels away I say” Would have done it anyway, but it’s always nice to return a favor especially when it’s with the very thing he helped with .
School closing list was surprisingly short this morning. Only one listed. All Illinois Schools. Where ever that is.
Tim- That is her essentials. You, should go to you LHS and stock up. That is one thing I didn’t do. Had I thought of it I could have picked up some I beams for the bridge I need to build. Would have been a wonderful snow day project.
Well, I too am having computer problems. Aside from the same problem JR has, the 2 second power outage took out a color or something on my mon.., oh, I already said that last night. Using Brenda’s monitor I see I need a new monitor. Too bad. And it's only 6 years old too.

Finally got those 5 AHM hoppers rolling around on athearn trucks and Kadee couplers.
JR, I checked for those couplers. I have 1 pair that says MHC-3 on the bottom and 4 pairs that say MCH-2. Searching on the web revealed that I have 1 pair for the 6-wheel trucks and 4 pairs for the 4-wheel trucks. You wouldn't happen to have any accumate dummy couplers, would you?

It does seem, most wish to spit out curses at teh weather and commiserate with each other about it.
We got a fair amount of snow and then got the "frain" {freezing rain} and sleet on top it. But today, with a high near 33, seems a lot is melting off, so that is good news. Of course Thurs night will be all of 4* overnight so have to run the water then again for sure, and it could mean Ice on the roads.
MOH {My Other Half} called when got to w**k and said main roads were clear, but a bridge on a major 4 lane parkway has a "bump" sign on it now, and there seems to be some separation of bridge from the road....NOT GOOD! We have an alternative bridge on the side street near us, but it, too was weakened and bolstered adn rip-rapped after the major flood of '06. DOn't know what/how the bridge on 434 got comprimised but could be a problem! I have to go pick up scripts sometime, don't know when I feel like getting my butt out into the weather. Not that I'm a weather wimp, mind you, I just prefer to stay indoors in solitude during the winter months. Will go when I can expect mail,so only out once.
MIL may be going home from hospital today after a stay with pneumonia and kidney infection. SHe is 83, frail, weak, down to 98 lbs. and tired all the time. Dunno if it's all the meds she is on helping hta or not. I have one muscle relaxer that puts me out for about 2 hours after I take it. I don't take it if I am going out,especially if I have to drive. I delay taking it till I am safe at home and not going anywhere. She could have a med or combo of meds like that doing that to her. FIL is getting around to the hospital with a new and proper walking shoe for his cast for his fractured ankle. Of course, when home, he calls MOH every day with some little niggling something or other to pest with, but seems to have no problems when MIL is in hospital. MOH went over the other day to shovel his driveway, and FIL called from hospital for MOH to pick up hearing aid batteries for MIL, saying his drive had been shoveled by a nice neighbor. Would have been NICE if FIL called to tell MOH the drive had been cleared so MOH didn't make a worthless trip over there!!!!!! NOw FIL issued a shopping edict for today for MOH to bring home after w**k at the grocery store. It doesn't help that MOH w**ks at a grocery store, as any day MOH works, FIL figures "well why can't you drop groceries by after w**k?". MOH is TIRED of the grocery store by the time w**k is done, and doesn't even like to "pick up a few things for us" on the way home!!!
Ah, well, the joys of aging demanding parents. FIL won't call Opportunities for Broome {county} or Office for the Aging to determine what, if any services they may qualify for,free of for a small fee. FIL always first figures he makes too much in pension and SS to get any "free help" without even trying, or figures "I can support myself" and is stubborn about things. He also figures MOH ought to just drop everything and run everytime he/they need something, as it should be MOH's duty to provide the help and assistance they need. He actually told MOH one day when he needed non-essential something or other one day , and MOH had to go to w**k, that MOH "should call into work and tell them MOH can't come in today". I mean, REALLY!!!!! He needs someone to help get MIL up in AM and to properly put her to bed at PM, and could possibly get home aid to help for little or nothing from Office for the aging if he tried. Might even get a group to shovel his drive like Tioga {county}Opportunities/Office for the Aging does for seniors around here. Broome county doesn't have as good services as Tioga does, but they can try.
Ah, well, I have rambled enough and MUSt get my tuckuss in gear to get scripts and mail. take me aobut 1/2 hour.

Been getting my blood pressure all in a knot again with the d@mn belts for the machinery. If I had a way to cut them narrow enough, I think plain old masking tape would work better and be much easier to install. Big problem is the material they come with does not bend easily....... I'm going to look and see if I can find a roll of masking tape around here. Then see what I can figure out to cut it into narrow strips to use for the belts. Hmmmmm.

Well, this morning I did a lot of digging. Got the driveway almost half-done when a pickup with a snow eating machine rolled up. By this point, several tractors with blades, tractors with snow eaters, Bobcat-style skid loaders; and other pickups with snow-eaters had gone by...everybody smiling and waving at the village idiot out SHOVELING (me). This one though was different. Big Ross Odebolt was in it. He hopped out, offered to finish the job for me. Big Ross is a fellow Clarence fireman.... 'tis good to have friends! He knocked it out in five minutes. Of course, the Big Guy left a big "drift" in the street.... but it doesn't seem to be hindering anybody.

Got the frozen pipe cleared finally. I had a hair dryer going on it for close to two hours before I got a trickle from the taps. After a few more minutes it was running full force. I went out and rewrapped that part of the pipe real good and put a layer or two of steel wool around it as well. Next time them pesky critters chew on the wrap it'll be terminal for them.

Galaxy- I don't know how to put this, but I see so many similarities with your MIL that I did with my Mother. Including the reasoning of the medicine for her condition. Lost weight, in and out of Hospitals, tired, not recovering but just remaining the same until entering the hospital only to come out a bit lighter and a bit weaker. Please contact Senior Services. I don't know what you call it there, but here it is what they call it in Springfield. I'm sure from the name you can decipher what they may call it there or at least have a idea what to ask for. They have contacts with all sorts of services for seniors that are usually covered by medicare/medicaide, or are really dirt cheap. I hope they offer the same types of services there. They are really helpful and kind. It doesn't have to be a spouse that calls and sets up, a child can also. I know you and the Other Half are tired, but maybe a couple phone calls more and possibly a one on one at your inlaws can save a lot of worry and maybe a few headaches too. It's worth a shot.
Got the front door shoveled. Brenda's happy. I guess. She decided to clean the inside of the heat registers. Asked me to show her how to open one up when I sat down to post this. She has now just stepped in and said...... I sucked up one of the screws with the vacuum cleaner. First register. Leave her alone for two minutes..... Anyway, disect the vacuum or a screw hunt, then trainroom. I have some track to lay and some electrical to run.
I tried to show Missy all the pretty kitties but all she said was "leave me alone. I'm taking a nap and the light is in my eyes." Fat dog.
Ray- Will you coat the masking tape with something other than paint to keep it from turning brittle and crunchy? Just a thought.

John (der), LOL... I figured if I couldn't dazzle them with brilliance at least I could at least baffle them with.... Ah, you know. Actually THAT's why it is called Solfeggio, it is named from the syllables used. The syllables come from an ancient Latin prayer and that followed up the scale from Do to La (they didn't have tea yet in those days....). Each was the first syllable of a word in a prayer that moved up the scale (actually in Ionian Mode as they didn't really have the major or minor scale thing back then....). Do came from Dominum, Re from Resurexit, Mi from Miserere, etc. It did originally only go up to La. They used the fingers on one hand to teach music reading using the old 4 line staff from the Liber Usualis (sp.?) In modern times a composer/ elementary music teacher named Kodaly (he lived just a few miles from a fellow music teacher name Carl Orff who developed a more instrumental approach to teaching music, and also wrote the Carmina Burana suite) also used hand signals to teach the parts of the scale. BTW the modes included Ionian (do to do, our major scale), Dorian (re to re), .... Oh you can look them up here if you really want to. Oh yes these only sound right if we use the steps from the old Greek tetrachords...... OK, I'll shut up!

Chris, don't go looking just yet. I now remember how I did the belt drive from the tractor to the silo on the farm on the layout. Yes, I cut down masking tape to a narrow strip. I'm not sure of the sizes that come with the kits, I think they are 1/16th. and 1/8th. but I would have to go check. The masking tape does a great job, looks right, and so far has stayed in place for several years up on the farm.

Got some running done today, roads where pretty clear and had no problems getting around.
Train Simulator Was playing a longer game today where I was running a helper engine to make it up the Northwest Passage. Came across a single type I never seen before. Top was Red and Lower was Yellow while I was heading into a passing spur. Got to the other end and there was a green light (could have been for the other side of the passing spur) and I kept going. Big mistake! Ran my 3 Dash 9's and 40 cars headlong into a pair of SD 40-2's. Kind of fun watching the cars buckle and roll down the side of the mountain.

TODD- problem is that we have to have a discussion with FIL and get him "in on it" when we call for services, or else he refuses tehm and says we are "meddling", yet will drive us to distraction meanwhile as he assumes it's our job to so. Tonigh the news had a segment about getting older people to give up their Driver's License, and that ain't easy either. FIL is 82 and still fairly good at it, but like my 76 y/o father, the FIL shouldn't be driving at night if he can avoid it, but he will from the hiospital where MIL is as he hates to leave her side, understandable, but not heroic. {My father won't drive at night if he can avoid it}. SOon, though, if he lives long enough we will face taking the keys away form FIL. MIL gave them up voluntarily after her stroke 15 yrs ago, as she knew she couldn't drive anymore. But FIL stuborn. I think then he will really make our lives a living hell as he will call us for every little niggling driving thing then. Oh, can't wait!

Evening diners!!...I will take the hot turkey sandwich with extra gravy and a chocolate shake...extra thick please. I will be sitting with Ray. Didn't get the amount of snow they had called for. Got about 6 to 8 inches of what I call pure sugar. Snowblowed the usual driveways besides my own...always like to help the neighbors who don't have one. The pay is pretty good..plates of warm cookies!! I was able to get some scenery done on the layout. Got one of the yards ballasted and the ground throws in for the switches. Also worked on trying to finish up some craftsman kits that were in various stages of assembly. People love to complain about the snow around where I live and I tell them to suck it up...we could be dealing with tornados,hurricanes,mudslides,floods and earthquakes like other parts of the country do. Those are rarities up here in Central N.Y. Bring on the snow!!! Took my daughter on a nice ride with the sled today and even let her get some driving time!!...she loves it. You know there is enough snow in your neighborhood when you can drive your sled right into the gas station to fill up. No wo%k tomorrow so I will be heading down to the layout room to run some trains tonight for a change. Have a good night all!!...Tim

Wow, some of you southern folks are really getting a pounding, snow wise. Almost makes me glad to be in the land of the frozen. Most of the time it is just too cold to snow.
J.R, you were wondering where to get McHenry couplers for Riv passenger cars. Kleins has lots of the #53 and 54 in stock at $3.19 for 2 pairs. They do work well and are very easy to install. I used them on a set of Riv heavyweights I bought from Trainworld a couple of years ago. They must have had those cars in stock for 25 years if the box was any indication.
Someone was asking about Jerry as he hasn't been in much for quite a while. He is active on the N Scale Community forum. I saw a post from him dated Jan.24 where he stated he was just out of the hospital with a lung clot and was doing OK.
Nothing new on the Mortimer sub, haven't run a train in over a week.

Just got an alert on MY forum from one of my neighbors to "Look out the *expletive removed* window!". I look and what do I see? Little tiny snow flakes. Not what I wanted to see. Good thing it'll melt tomorrow.

In between emails and phone calls tonight I did the final belt assembly for the "power room/workshop" (much of the belt drive stuff will be in the engine house proper). 'tis getting easier I think. The last one even with the crossed belt went fairly smooth. I used the suggestion to put the contact cement on and let it set up for a while before sticking the belt to it.... Duh.....
Here are a couple quick photos of what is there at the moment (I decided I will hide some of the globs of glue by putting in a shallow storage area over the equipment.... It still most probably won't make the cut for a merit award, but i will use it for one of the non-judged structures....
You should be able to see all 4 belts in these photos. Hopefully you can now see the source of all the nasty language......

I'm not seeing the 4th. belt; is the "one" at the bottom of the second pic in fact twined? Glad the contact cement did the trick.

BYW Do was not originally called do..... My mind had a brain phart there.. Actually it was Ut and was later changed to do as do is much easier to intone than Ut! I will have to find my Grout, "History of Western Music" textbook and look up a couple things as this crazy conversation has started my brain trying to remember stuff I learned over 40 years ago at Eastman... At one time I could read early music manuscript used in the church..... Nice in detail explanation of it here. It even has the "Hymn to St. John the Baptist" that the system came from.... Haven't seen THAT in many, many years!
Back about 20 years ago after answering a students question about early notation in a 6th. grade class, one of the students went and spoke with the priest at one of the Roman Catholic Churches here in Geneva. He sent a copy of the Liber Usualis with her to bring to class. We had an interesting next day in that classroom.....
The 4th belt goes from the middle overhead down to the milling machine right below it. It is hard to see but is visible in the first photo. Yes the belt is crossed in the second pic. That was done for a couple of reasons. 1. You have to make sure the machine is running the correct direction, so some belts were crossed to do that. 2. One reason they liked to cross the belts, as we always did on the farm running belt equipment, was to increase to adhesion on the drive. There was also a sticky goop that was put on the belt. I remember it as a little kid when it was painted on the surface of the belt while running with a paint brush. Later in the 1960s we had it in a spray can. When the belt would start to slip, a little of the stuff would instantly start her running again. The name escapes me right now. [edit} Belt Grip!
