Good Morning!! Coffee please.

Looks nice out there. I hear it’s cooold. Suppose to get into the thirties by the weekend and a day of forties. Good. I’m sure my sump pump will run like who knows what when the thaw comes. Best start puttin things up off the floor now. If we get a storm that causes a loss of power and the pumps running like it does sometimes, I don’t have time hardly to get to the shed and start the generator before the water’s at the top of the pit. Luckily, I doubt if the water will get high enough to get into the layout.

Jerry- Good to hear from you and glad you’re doing better.

Jeff- Never give up. I’m surprised. You almost sound like you are feeling defeated. Of all people, I never thought I’d hear THAT from you. Maybe I misunderstood the tone.

OK, today I must unload,(there I go again)put aWAY the groceries from the trucks, at the restaurant this morning, then….. Maybe, juuuust maybe things will work out that I can get some layout time in. Every time I think I’ll have a chance, or plan on doing something with it,  something last minute comes up. Last night it was being called in to wo*k after I decided to stop in for a quick one before heading home after blowing Mom’s drive out and laying some track. (I have the muti-meter laying on the benchwork)  I do have to w**k tonight, but I’d like to play a bit between “shifts”.  (Fingers crossed)

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Good Morning All,

Mid 30's and raining just now. Lots to get to today so I'll just have a regular coffee to go please Zoe. Got some cleaning in the basement done last night but not much else.

Ken - glad you had a better day at w..k. Hopefully the boss dawgs will see that when people actually walk through the door you can sell them. Just remember - "Some days you're the bug and somedays you're the windscreen."

Lee - I use the cheapest shop lights I can find and plant them in the ceiling on the rafter closest to the wall. As you surmised, that puts the light over the area where the track will go and minimizes the shadows on the backdrop. That's also the reason I have them plugged into boxes on the ceiling - I can disconnect the far wall if needed for photos. If need be I'll put difuser panels in as well. I do find as I get older that I need more and more light to see the details of what I am doing. No cracks needed about getting dimmer with age - I'm already thereConfused.

Time to scoot - lots to do again  CUL, J.R.

Hi again,

I am down with a bad case of migraine - took a nap to get rid of it, but it did not work. Each move hurts and I feel ill to my stomach.

Chloe, a tall glass of Ed´s OJ, please - no, nothing else.

Robby - most of our houses are built in the traditional way - brick by brick. There is hardly any lumber used. Even the roofs are made of a sandwich of foam board and concrete nowadays, for insulation purposes. Chances to get some lumber are close to nil. Foam board is fairly inexpensive, as it is a buyer´s market. A 2 m by 1 m sheet of 5 cm board costs about 5 $ - that´s enough for the coming years!

As I wrote in my last post, progress will be slow, but there will be a progress ...

Back to the sofa - nausea is catching up on me!

Gooooood morning.   Got about 2 inches of snow, and of course the cars are covered in ice.   Plus I already got yelled at this morning by Jessica.   I kinda left a "ice scraper" on the hood of the car Whistling.

I have some things to do around the house, and maybe get in the basement later.

Ulrich..........Next time you see someone doing some construction see if they will let you have the old cut wood.   I've read where people built the whole layout on free wood, and sometimes you can get some "foam board" also.   Just a idea.

Good Morning,

JR, I’ve been thinking about installing six 4 foot four bulb florescent fixtures in my train room.  Currently I have 3 CFLs that run down the middle of the room and when you work on the layout you cast a shadow right where you’re looking.  I see the fixtures at home Depot for $44 each.

Flex track:  I went with Model Power flex track this time and I bought it in bulk. Atlas is good and VERY flexible.  Model power is a little stiffer and holds its shape better.  Model power in bulk (100 pcs) worked out to be $1.25/3 foot section.

Train show in Lodi, OH this weekend.  I might drive down to see what all the fuss is about.  Last fall I went to the Toledo Train show and the Fire lands train show and half the vendors were missing.  Came to find out they all were in Lodi.  I do need some scenery stuff, but don’t want to pay the LHS price.  Larry if you’re going maybe I can buy you a cup of coffee or something and say howdy…

Today is the day we interview about 5 new PSW's into our company...then I'll have a few days off to actually work on something other than w**k....

Flo, I'll have a coffee and a bowl of bran flakes with fruit in it please...I'll be at the RC for a bit

Good Morning Everyone!

Ha, I beat Bill this time!

Zoe, just a cup of coffee for me this time, please.

I might run to our home depot to get some plywood, so I can start building the "benchwork" for some corner modules. It´ll run up to about $ 20 this time - I have to check with Petra whether we can squeeze this out of the month´s budget.

Jeff - I know exactly how you feel. Not being able to afford even the smallest purchase to continue on your layout takes away all the fun of it. I have been through that a number of times in the past 24 months, with many a dream bubble bursting, when it came down to calculating the cost for even a small start. Even though I have started "something" now (certainly not my dream layout), I know it´ll be a long way until I can see the first train circling the loop of track, which my layout eventually will be. I still need about $ 120 to be able to run a loco on a stretch of track, most of it to be spent on a DC power pack. I thought I could avoid buying that, but the coreless motor in my steamer will be ruined by the PWM DC controller I still have. But I have decided to continue, step by step. Progress will be slow. Did I say slow? I mean Slooow! I am confident that it will work out - somehow. I need this to keep my sanity, to have something to cling on in the bad times we are in.

Jeff, please hang in there! I wish I could help you. It makes me sad not being able to help a friend.

Barry - interesting collection of whatchumaycallits. Sometimes I wonder about what is able to run on rails.

Evenin' folks!

Just a decaf for me tonight Janie.  Just need a few minutes to relax.

Today was the day to spend in the layout rooms....  Yeah, Right!Angry  I did go down and turn on the heat... came back upstairs and read my emails.....  Other people seem to have other ideas, so I just spent the last 3 k=hours verifying the membership list for the Division so it will have all the correct info on it to know who gets email and who has to get snail mail....  While I was at it I also verified addresses.  Got it done though.  Couldn't find info for a hand full of people.  Somebody else can call and harass them, I'm not!

JohnDer:   That 'streamliner is a rather odd thing..I guess it was a 'homemade' model as I have been trawling teh interwebz looking for whomever made the dang thing....

 Evening Folks!

Flo, pitcher of Beer for everyone that wants one!

Even a blind squirrel can find a nut! Door swung my way Today! Big Smile While the last two days where less than stellar, today sort of made up for it. Had 5 customers and 4 bought for a total of $5200.00. Boy if I could do that everyday!

"Layout work is off the list as I don't have the supplies I need for the scenery work and probably won't have them for several months. Sometimes I find myself thinking about just tearing it down and putting everything into storage or selling it off and using the space for something else. Not much point in having a layout if I can't use it or work on it."

Jeffery I know the feeling, but for a different reason. Hard to bring my self to do anything on the layout. I have supplies, just hard to work on something that I might lose.

Personally I would not believe me if I where you. But I finally remembered to gap the box with the train stuff I owe you and have it sitting by the front door. It still has the scanner in the box, but the other box I have should hold the crossing gates and platform. With some luck it will all fit and I will get it sent off Wednesday.

Galaxy I am glad you are getting a little relief from the pain, hope the shoots help now that the tumors are gone. Is your back pain more after you get up and moving, all the time or when you first get up in the morning? Sue is disabled due to back problems. I won a great mattress (I could never afford a $5,000.00 set) and it helped her a lot! While you don't have to buy anything nearly that expressive to get a good mattress. People due underrate what a mattress can do for there back problems. All so the Myth that a firm mattress is good for there back is just that, A Myth!

I am not trying to sale you a mattress, far as I know we cannot ship a mattress. But, if you would like to explore the possibility that a mattress set might help let me know.

 See you all Tuesday.

Gonna be on the cool side tonight (26°). I won't be on tomorrow morning as I have to be in Alexandria early. I have an appointment at the Abana Orthotics and Prosthesis center' to have a new brace made for my right leg. My old one is showing signs of wear and I can't walk without it so it has to be done. I'm not really looking forward to it.

Hey guys,

Sitting in class right now, waiting for the instructor to start (he's on the phone).

Sawyer, Heck, I was 6 the last time the Packers won a Super Bowl. It's been too long.

Jeff, What do you mean by "dining on crow"? BTW, I took my layout down a while ago and boxed the equimpent. I'm using the lack of a layout to detail and weather my equipment. Every now and then, I'll break out my EZ track and run some trains for a bit or speed match some locos. I may not have done much recently because of the new car, but a little bit at a time.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

***Jeffrey, you have a cool layout. I'm surely not alone in saying I've learned much from watching you rebuild, transform and scenic elements of it. And most of us go through periods of re-thinking what we're doing and having to cut back do to a lack of funds. Been there often and taken a number of extended breaks, but have yet to give up.

***Der, cool pic of the train heading through town. That's almost as close to those buildings as the trains which went by my old apt in WA state. I loved the drone of the locos and the vibrations sent through the apt.

Afternoon folks!

Flo just a cup of hot cocoa for me at the moment.

Is Jeffrey actually going to eat THAT thing?  Oh, it's for the guys on the other side of the diner....  I see.

Never got in here this morning as i got tied up with the treasurers report for the MLK Committee.  What should have taken about a half hour to type up and check figures ended up being about 3 hours of frustration.  I hadn't made all the entries of the transactions for the last month in  all the right places, and had to track down several things from receipts and bank statements.....  I hate it when I do things in a "Half Vast" way!!! GrumpyAngry

The rest of the day so far has been occupied doing items for the NMRA Division.  Have a meeting tonight and have to get thrash put out to the curb too.  Maybe I will turn on the heat down in the train room with the expectation of spending a few minutes staring at a project or two.

Lter!

grumble grumble grumble "good" afternoon...I guess.........

I'll admit it. At times last night, I drifted over to the corner of the North Liberty Community Center where the "Puppy Bowl" was being shown. The puppies were cute, and the "game" better than what was being shown on the walls on the opposite side of the room.Dead

*sigh*

so, is all your TV commercial free? Publicly funded? From a TV tax like in the UK?Huh?

We have a few publicly funded stations with hardly any commercials (none past 8 pm, though) and a number of private ones, most of them with the usual crap shows that Petra and certainly don´t watch.

Btw, interesting pic - I guess folks will have to sort their desks when this train rumbles by ...

Good afternoon Diners: I'm hiding in here to put off a bunch of things that I should be doing downstairs. Kris is at a job interview for the Census, then going to the gym, then calling in at a neighbour's on the way home.......Whistling

Ulrich:

John, standard height of a module is just 10 cm or about 4 ", unless you build up a "mountain". That´s not much, but sufficient to build a plausible scenery in N scale, I think.
....Don't have to convince me on the "enough for plausible scenery in N" idea.  The photos you've posted of the (I'm presuming) Japanese modules all sceniced up speak for themselves!Thumbs Up so, is all your TV commercial free? Publicly funded? From a TV tax like in the UK?Huh?

Barry:

After watching that game last night I discovered that Puppy Bowl was on on Animal Planet...would have been more interesting...
...We caught a brief glimpse of the SB when the Packers were up about 6 points at 13 - then surfed a bit and found "Mouse Hunt" which we had enjoyed at the movies - saw that out, and caught the last 2 minutes of the game...have yet to figure why teams are allowed to run the clock down like that - there were 45 seconds left when everyone seemed to decide it was over. What's with that? Question Loved that last streamlined beauty you posted (the one before US Army 6004)Clown

Todd:

" To which I respond, (yes to the TV)
...I've read somewhere that they've studied the frequency of THAT. It's HIGH, WAY high! Laugh

Jeff:

Layout work is off the list as I don't have the supplies I need for the scenery work and probably won't have them for several months. Sometimes I find myself thinking about just tearing it down and putting everything into storage or selling it off and using the space for something else. Not much point in having a layout if I can't use it or work on it. Then I wouldn't need the internet anymore as I only use it to go to model railroad forums to see what others are doing on their layouts. That would save me almost $50 a month. I could always go back to my other hobby of building computers.
..There's a bunch of us would regret that, as I'm sure you know! OTOH, is there enough space in the "walk in" part of the new configuration to set up a computer build area? If so, could that be a source of income? Just thinking out loud. My 2 Cents

Jerry: Great to see you back again. Good to hear that the lung clot thing is improving. My friend Ken W. in St. Albert, Alberta is having to take a year "reduced activity" to get rid of persistent lung clots. Yup, the "new" computer should warm things up a bunch for you.

Lunch time eh? I'll have a couple of those brats hidden back behind the liver in the fridge, some slaw and an RC. Dessert? Why a Moon Pie of course.  Good to see Jerry stop in and that he's doing better. That blood clot in the lungs stuff is serious - the DIL had it and is on meds for life now. Temps all the way up to 40 now but I just can't get warm. Hope I'm not coming down with anything.

Robby - what flavor flex track do you use? I surrendered and finally got a bulk order for reasonable money from Trainworld. It was Atlas code 100 flex but it came in at half what my "friendly" price was at the LHS.

Here's the porder - I'll be outside on the veranda.  J.R.

 Lunch!!

Went to take Jessica a movie for her classroom, and riding beside me was a Union Pacific pulling a lease engine.  Of course it was pulling coal.   Just when I don't have my camera Bang Head.

I also made by the LHS to get a couple of switches , and some flex track.  The track has gone up to $4.25 each!!!!!!  Got three and that's good enough!!

Now I can get into the basement and get some more layout stuff done.

Jerry..........Glad to hear your ding better.

Good Morning All,

39F and cloudy with more snow coming tonight though they can't make their mnds up how much. Watched parts of the super bowl yesterday - thought it was a good game though Pittsburgh gave it away. Shame they couldn't have done that two weeks ago, I'd have liked to see the Jets there if the Giants couldn't be. Guess they didn't practice the national anthem much on the Mickey Mouse Club. It's tough when you have to learn a set of lyrics instead of just knowing them by heart and then sing a'capella in front of all those people. But then that's why they get the big bucks, right? I know playing out we used to make up lyrics all the time, but that was in bar bands. "No sir we don't do that song but this one has a lot of the same words in it."

Got half the ceiling done and the lighting rebuilt and installed in the train room. The lights are 4' flourscents recycled from the old layout. I left the wiring exposed with plug in extensions to a box on the ceiling because I see playing with different lighting setups once the layout is in and I wanted to be able to unplug fixtures as needed and plug in others. I just need to wait a few years for the price of LED's to come down to earth. If I can get the kids to help, I'm not sure I won't sheet rock the rest of the ceiling. I like the ceiling tile cause it's quieter, but the price of sheet rock is a fraction of the tiles. We'll see.

Back to the shop and the projects. We leave for the first weekend in 12 days and it's back to back with the next. CUL, J.R.
