I'm half-frozen from 2 hours + on the sidelines tonight. First round of post-season play for high screwl football (technically "Quarter Final Round"). I journeyed to Eldridge to watch "my" Iowa City West High Trojans do battle with the North Scott (County) Lancers.

To make it worse, we still have sustained winds of 20-30 mph with gusts of 40 and 50. So much for West's passing game. But, "my" Clear Creek Amana Clippers pulled off a huge upset over Union at La Porte City. So...the Clippers play again Monday night. But, don' t know yet if it will be at home or at Williamsburg. I'm hoping for home, my boss probably is too (less mileage to pay).
SAWYER: THAT Editor's politics are well-known, but I'll give her credit, she keeps her writing neutral; as I try to. So, THAT said, she'll expect me to accurately report what the "pork producers" say. The Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce has been spear-heading the campaign to get AMTRAK to Iowa City, so I know they'll be gushing about it. Trouble is, they're banking on the University of Iowa students from Illinois doing a lot of the riding, along with locals wanting to go to Chicago for the day/weekend. I think initially, it'll get a lot of use. Then, the "nostalgia" factor of riding the train will fade. The college kids won't use it as much as projected, and it will join the ranks of the non-profitable routes. There is still talk of expanding the route west to Des Moines, then on to Council Bluffs/Omaha. But, AMTRAK already runs across Iowa from Burlington to CB/Omaha on the BNSF. THAT train is chronically late, and finding a seat on it isn't an issue. The poly-tick-ians see "jobs jobs jobs" coming from this. Yup, temporary construction jobs while the Iowa Interstate rebuilds itself, and temporary construction jobs building Am-Shack stations. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the contractors end up being from out-of-state. I'll also lay odds THAT they are all union contractors, no non-union guys need apply. The Iowa Interstate is the biggest "winner," getting their ex-Rock Island trackage upgraded. It will help them compete against the UP, CN, and BNSF in the future IF the route does extend west.
Well, THAT was a longer answer than I'd intended... All I'd planned to say is I will use direct quotes and attributions: "the Chamber claims," "Sen. Harkin (D, IA) said," "Rep. Loebsack (D, IA) promised..." A PR piece it won't be. Otherwise, we'd just run the Chamber's press release and call it good. At the same time, my opinionated opinion will also not appear. They don't pay me to write op-ed pieces. Professionalism means providing fair coverage, even if you have to hold your nose to do it. Too bad so many in "the mainstream media" have forgotten THAT in their quest to advance one political party while openly denigrating any/all opposition at every turn.

ROBBY P: I think ALL package-handling companies specialize in mis-treatment of packages. I had the USPS do a real number on a large, heavy, very well-packed glass powerline insulator I sold on TheBay. The buyer told me my packing was great, he even TRIED to inflict damage himself but couldn't. UPS is pretty consistent on when they make the rounds in Clarence, so if I'm expecting something via them, I know when to be home (12-12:30). FedEx is also pretty regular in their rounds (11:30-1:30) cutting down on the "when will they be at my door" guessing game.
GALAXY: Here's hoping you've finally found some relief!
Time to see if I got anything worth submitting to THAT Editor from tonight's game... sometimes what looks really, really good on the small screen on the back of the camera turns out to be CRAP when viewed on the 'pooter screen. Might need to stop back in for depending on what I find...

Galaxy.........I agree about the tracking number. I just know I have shipped to Australia several times, and other places world wide, and no problems. I just don't like UPS/FedEx. I guess its because I worked at FedEx for a few years, and see how packages are handled.

I just hope its not been sitting at Staples since Monday, that won't be a good scene!!

I ordered something form Hawaii that has a "delivery confirmation number" From the USPS RATHER THAN a "Tracking number", which would at least tell me where the H-E-double hockey sticks it is right now it has been 3.5 weeks on USPS ground ship! DO you THINK a " Delivery COnfirmation Number" does me ANY good???? NO..WHY...cause I WILL KNOW when it has Arrived on my doorstep!!! DUH!!!

Wolfgang - I have been into narrow gauge railroading for nearly 40 years. The early days were quite difficult, as there were hardly any locos or rolling stock around, other than the infamous "Eggerbahn".
Johnboy - in 1974, just before my term as an exchange student to the US ended, I had the chance to visit the remnants of the D&RGW narrow gauge lines in Colorado and was fascinated. Upon returning to Germany I ordered this loco as a kind of souvenir. I could not afford to buy a brass K-27 or K-28, even the about $ 100 this loco had cost, translated into an enormous amount of Deutschmarks for a student.
I still don´t know how I could forget this loco - it moved, unknown to me, about 10 times with me throughout Germany. It was the only treasure in that box, the rest was just the normal "junk" which accumulates over the years.
A little miracle!
I have no idea yet, what to do with it, but I will keep it in any case.

Not that I have job, at least not yet, but something unbelievable happened today.
I unearthed a real treasure!
In our attic, there are a few boxes, which haven´t been opened for years, even decades. Petra wanted me to look for an old book of hers, which I had never seen in those close to 27 years we are together now. So I went upstairs and started to search for the book. Well, I did not find it, but I found a red box with this inside:
It is a Westside Model Co. HOn3 D&RGW T-12, which I bought in 1975, painted and lettered it, test ran it and put it away. It´s been in this box for 35 years and still looks reasonable. All it needs is a little cleaning and a good lube job to get it running.
What a treasure - although the purist will note, that it has a wrong number!
I still can´t believe it!

The siding gives you the chance of switching the yard without fouling the main. I am not quite sure whether this will fit into the given space, but it is just food for thought. The cars shown are 50´ gondolas.

Good Morning, Jeff, I would start a log and settle up once a month.The command Center sent an email out yesterday telling us they would not dismiss us early to beat the storm because it would be safer to shelter in place. Phssst! I walked out early and made it to my truck just as the rain started (half mile walk to the parking lot). By the time I drove the 10 miles to my exit I couldn’t see more than 2 car lengths ahead of me due to the windblown leaves and pouring rain. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. we got 0.55 inches of rain.

Jeff - your neighbor must have lived here as well. One of our neighbors has a Jack Russel Terrier, which barks all day and all night. Rather than relieving the poor creature, I´d give a shot at the owner . All you get is a life sentence, which means 12 years...
Robby - I´d leave the yard as it it. Add a few building as a view blocker to the main and it should be OK. As for the scrap yard, all you basically need is one or two tracks, branching of from your main. Don´t put too much track on your layout - better use the space for some interesting scenes. You know, I am very much in favor of a less is more attitude. Open spaces on layouts cry for being filled with track, but it is better not to be tempted.

Barking, and more barking. I would open the window and yell....Shut up!!!!! Finally it took a mail person about to get bit by the dog, to get them to do something about it.

Good morning. It's 73 and cloudy. The high will be 88 and there's a chance of rain starting at 20% this morning and reaching a max of 50% by 2 pm.Didn't get much sleep last night. Neighbors dogs kept barking all night and the power went out 3 or 4 times and was out for a total of several hours. Pain in my back and knees didn't help much. Usually the sound of the fans in here drown out any dog barking. The fans don't disturb me as I'm used to their noise. But when the power went out the dogs woke me up in a hurry and after about an hour I was about ready to go hunting for the buggers and shut them up permanently. The neighbor got smart and called them in. Have to go into town this morning and get some gas or the van will be running on fumes before Saturday. I only have $20 but that will get me a little better than a 1/4 tank. That'll be enough to last till the 1st when my Social Security money comes in. As the as the recently vacated property goes, my niece wishes to purchase it but she is disagreeing with the price my parents want for it. She believes she should get it for half of what they want. I keep telling her to get a survey crew to come out and see much property there is and if it will give her enough to build a house on. By law she needs an acre. I've cautioned her on rushing in and buying it as she could get stuck with less than what she needs, but she's never been known for her patience. The battle lines have been drawn and I seem to be caught in the middle somehow. We'll see who gives in first.

I am up due to pain. Iced 'er down again already and took pain pill. Was up 3 times last night to ice 'er down. SO not only am I in pain, but tired too.
ok KEN, we get it- CHARTER SUCKS! The miracles of modern life never cease to amaze us do they,,until we have to do without them. We lost power for about 1.5 hours the other night boy was it QUIET in the house! SO quiet it was defining so we put batteries in t he radio and listened to it buy oil lamps and candles for awhile. Not much on TV then anyway. and obviously no internet.
It's almost 7 AM here but still pitch black out. ON SUNDAY THE SEVENTH OF NOVEMEBER THOSE OF WHO DO IN THE USA CHANGE OUR CLOCKS BACK AN HOUR! SO we get an extra hour of sleep as at 2AM that sunday it becomes 1 AM. Just a freindly reminder!!!
I am going off to help a friend do some stuff. Fortuantely I can do it sitting down with the other half to help.
The dressing comes off today. I'm so glad as it is stating to itch as I am alergic to both latex and other adhesives. THey burn my skin so in the shower my other half will have to help encourage the steri strips off otherwise they will burn off the skin and it will peel away with the steristrips at the suture site.

Guess what, folks! I´ll have an interview coming up on Friday, Nov. 5th. After close to 1,500 applications finally an interview. A small private TV station is looking for someone to take care of all their administrative and financial matters - a job I sure can more than just cope with. Would be really great to get out of the doldrums (and also to start some MRRing activities again).
Ken - I am using Firefox as well as AVG, and I am having none of your problems. AVG does interact with certain firewalls, though. Until I had switched off my MS security package, I was also having issues with downloading. I am fine now, only the forum gives me a headache with being dead slow, but not always.

Also attened the gym filler class I have for college. I took it since I needed only 1 credit hour to get up to fulltime. So I figured take this since it can double up as my workouts. I waven't worked ot in a while, cause after I was done I could barely walk. Guess I have to get used to doing this thing.

Far as making the layout 5 foot tall. it was just a idea, at 5 foot I could get a car in the garage! But in the 4 foot range I could still do the roll under.

Line of storms that impacted much of the country passed thru here this morning. Storms blew a roof off a moving and storage company warehouse east of here. Twisters were spotted several places nearby.
I moved stuff from the deck as storms approached. I re-injured my old back injury and have not been able to walk since this morning. The old injury was from a drunk driver long ago, and I have these events from time to time.
We're scheduled to go to Alabama in a couple of days, and so it's bad timing.
No model railroad progress today.

(by the way Jeffery I think Fire Fox was the reason I could not download the link you gave me) Used Explorer and tried again. First nice young lady set me up with my user name and password. Could not log in, tried there live help and showed no such address? Line line was working so I called for live help. Another helpful young lady answer and off we go again. With my slow internet speed it took forever to get any where, after another 45 minutes we where on step 12 of 16. Guess what? Land Line went %$#& DEAD! Modem all so went belly up! Anti Viruses was only half loaded.

The Iowa and Illinois departments of transportation will be receiving $230 million from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to initiate intercity passenger rail service on a route from Iowa City to Chicago via the Quad Cities. . United States Secretary of Transportation Raymond LaHood, Governor Chet Culver, U.S. Senator Tom Harkin, U.S. Representative Dave Loebsack will be in attendance. . The 219.5-mile route will provide twice-daily, round-trip service at maximum speeds of 79 mph, and have an expected trip time of less than five hours. The Amtrak trains will operate on a route that begins at Chicago’s Union Station and travels on BNSF Railway’s line to Wyanet, Ill., and then the Iowa Interstate Railroad’s line from Wyanet to Iowa City, Iowa. Took Sue to get her Medicaid Card this mourning that went better than I hoped.
As I posted a few days ago my computer has been acting slow. I have, or should I say should have a 16 Gigabyte modem. Went to speed net . com last week and it was showing 5.87 down load and 2.0 up load. I thought that was slower than it should be, but I was able to get around OK on the net.
When Sue and I got home today phone was dead. Sue found out it was dead while I was trying to get on the site. Up load was still only 5.87 and download was at a whole .18! Called Charter on sues cell phone and got a idiot that seemed to think I should be able to fix it my self. While I talked to the idiot and plugged and unplugged stuff the phone shut down 6 times! (not the cell phone)
He finally transferred me to a nice young lady that was not a moron and she tried to help. Seems that when I upgraded to the 16 Gigabyte, no one resat my Modem. ( land line was still cutting in and out as well and I was still on the cell) She tried to reset the modem but could not. So she sat me up for a repair person Wednesday. I was on the phone for 49 minutes! She all gave me the web address so I could go to Charter.Com and down load there free Anti Virus just to make sure it was not my computer.
While I was messing with trying to reboot the modem for the 5th time today the land line phone rang! Guessing the nice young lady was calling me back! Well it was charter, guy named Terry wanting to know when I was going to PAY THE %$#*&^ BILL! Boy did that poor sap call me at the wrong time!( I all so told Charter I be paying this coming Wednesday due to Tiff unplanned Vet Visit) Boy he got a ear full! At one point I said Charter sucked like a $5.00 H&%$#er.
