Kyle_Y

First time in the diner, so I'll need to look at a menu. I'm going to grab  a spot in a corner booth and just listen for now.

Welcome to the Dinner. HAve a Coffee on me.

The menu is whatever you want. There are no restrictions, no calories, no cholesterol.

If you get the top of the page in your post {as I did here on this page} you have to "buy" everyone's meal ticket, so the diner food is also "free".

Please tell us more about yourself and talk about whatever is going on with you in your life. WE all come here to share our lives, comisserate, commentate, and assist each other with advice and care given with care and concern for our fellow MRR's. Here you can talk about just about anything, we shy away from "flamer topics" though, such as religious beliefs and political debates, though that are likely to start a "flame war" of opinions and insults hurled at others with mud and food flying through the air! One can express or request "thoughts and prayers" for us or individuals in our lives, though.

This {and the beer barn} are the only threads that are allowed to not be MRR related, aand can simply be about life as it happens around us all.

So join in and don't be shy! Wink

Evenin' folks!

Janie I'll have the NY Strip Steak, medium rare, baked potatoe w/ sour cream, and trip to the salad bar.  Oh, and a glass of iced tea as well.  Please and thank you.

Progress!  I have been making progress today.  About 3/4s of the module has now been ballasted and the last 2 switch stands have been glued in place.  They are only cosmetic.  I have made them to turn with the switch points, but not enough time to play with them this time.  I should have the rest of the ballast glued down later this evening, so tomorrow will be fiddle and tweak day......  I know I will have to put more graphite on the ties near the points as there is always some stray dilute white glue that tries to glue down the points.  I will also pick off the stray pieces of ballast from where they shouldn't be and touch up the paint job on the rusting rails.  getting nearly done.  Now for the paperwork for it!

Gray seat belts, Galaxy?  THAT would be a nice contrasting color to the gold interior........  Knock on wood (hits self on head) both my truck and the Yaris have been running well these days.  Last fill up on the Yaris, I did the math for Gas Mileage.  Came out to 39.6 MPG.  Not bad!  Of course THAT tank was used just running back and forth to Canandaigua to feed the sister's cats so it was all driving on rural roads.

Well, back to the ballast!

Galaxy, I've always wondered why they get parts in the wrong color all the time. I've gotten to the point that if it's wrong, I'll paint it to match

I can't very well paint gray seat belts gold...the webbing won't hold the paint long in the retractor.

Hey guys

Not a whole lot going on, just on my little break between college and work.

Last night got all the work done to the 7.5" so it could be used with the all-wheel discs that are in the 1990. I got it on the jack last night, but didn't install it. The new exhaust system for my 1994 showed up today, so I'm gonna take it up to the shop on Friday. Tomorrow I'm going to get the rear end and driveshaft in the 90 so I can get it onto the bank parking lot over the weekend (on weekends it subs as a used-car lot).

Joe, Sorry to hear about your grandfather.

Galaxy, I've always wondered why they get parts in the wrong color all the time. I've gotten to the point that if it's wrong, I'll paint it to match

Ulrich, there is a spectrum version of the 4-4-0, but it's the 20th century version.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Jeff, how about a project box from radio shack and a used diagnostic plug from a junk car?  Run a section of scrap wire up to the box that disappears into a stuffing tube on the firewall??

There's an idea.

Get this...my friends son was released last night to go home. HTe evaluating Dr. said he wasn't really depressed,,,just "down in the dumps" over the loss of his GF. THis...for a a kid who was hanging ropes over rafters in the garage and put hooks in the ceiling of his room to hang belts from and leaves a suicide note on his bed???

What was that doctor thinking? A better question is where did he get his lisence!?!?

I just hope he doesn't go through with his plans.

I just don't understand, why would someone (especially a teen-ager, in the dawn of life) want to kill themselves? Don't they realize that there is more to be achieved from living, than there is to be achieved by killing themselves?

The way I see it, Suicide is nothing more than the person not caring for others. Does your friend's son realize that, if he kills himself, he would also, in part, kill his parents, friends, and anyone else he interacts with on a regular basis, in their personality?

If he kills himself, Not only would it kill him, but it would cause an impact on his family and friends more powerful than an atomic bomb, leaving them with guilt, and wondering "was there anything I could have done?" and it may get bad enough to tear the family apart.

SoapBox  I'm off the soapbox now. I'll keep him in my prayers, and hope for the best.

Whistling

Good afternoon Gang,

I'm  little late for lunch, but,  Chloe, when its my turn I'll have a Denver with curly fries and a diet RC cola, Thanks.

There is sure lots of construction and renovations going on.  You Guys are really earning "Brownie Points" from you Better halves or Moms.

KEN,  A few years ago, when we were doing some kitchen renos, we were changing the color of the appliances from almond to white. Of course the range hood was almond as well.  I thought about painting it but before I did, I went to the "Restore Store" which is the Habitat for Humanity recycle store.  There I found a next to new one that was actually the exact same make and in white.  I got it for $15.00, so I was out of there like a raped ape and glad that I avoided the repaint time involved. It was a simple matter of moving the wires from the old to the new one. 10 minutes max.  So if you have such a store close to you give it a try before putting in the amount of time that is needed to give it a professional finish.

Not much new here, back at work today and enjoying the nice fall weather through the window.  Wish I was at home.

Still suffering with some nasal congestion that normally hits me around this time of year. (Harvest Dust) don't you know.  But do feel better than I did a couple of weeks ago.

Sure like that plan Ulrich.  Wish we were closer to be of some assistance to you.

Jeff,  Be gentle on those young guys who think they know everything, they might be the ones who will be looking after us in the Nursing Home.      (hope not)

Galaxy,  I have heard many good things about the Kia's and in fact my  Lawyer has taken a half interest in a Kia Dealership here, after being so impressed with them.

Hadn't better sit on here too long today at work.  Uncle Gov't might be watching.

Prayers and blessings to all in need,  and we all need that is some way I believe.

 Keep the faith Gang.

 Afternoon folks.

Flo, I will take a Cheese Burger

Tod could the range hood be that simple. I been looking at it and see to sign of a plug yet. But then again, I have not been able to get the grease screen out yet either! Big Smile I would think it would just yank out.

Sue wants me to paint it with a brush! Well we know that is not going to happen!

Speaking of Brush Marks I tried prepping the last set of doors differently. Did not work great. Instead of taking to bare wood like I have done the other doors, I just tried to sand out the brush marks Sue left the last time. Couple of spots I went through the paint to bare wood. After the paint dried you can see the spots, they are rougher than the rest of the door. Does not look awful and I can live with it.

See you all later if I don't fry myself on the range hood! Laugh

Afternoon All,

A Swiss bacon mushroom burger on sourdough lightly toasted please and a rbf to go with it please.

G - sorry to hear about your friends son being released already, with all the para this and thats here they can probably give better advice but I think mostly he won't be helped until he realizes he really needs it and wants to change. Not sure how one does that for someone else, I just hope he survives long enough to look in the mirror some day and not like the reflection.  J.R.

Morning./ Got the Kia back. the Drivers side seatbelt works OK but the passenger actually retracts worse, I think. I may have to take it back.

Get this...my friends son was released last night to go home. The evaluating Dr. said he wasn't really depressed,,,just "down in the dumps" over the loss of his GF. THis...for a a kid who was hanging ropes over rafters in the garage and put hooks in the ceiling of his room to hang belts from and leaves a suicide note on his bed???

He could be trying to get attention, but his parents already give him that...his mother over indulges him in everything if you ask me or my friend. ANd they bail his$1***$2out every time he gets into trouble.

They gave hi "counseling appointments" and a number to call for a drug/alcohol rehab {like he's gonna voluntarily go there!}.

Dunno. The boy certainly needs help and he won't take his medication for depression on his own...unless my friend gives it to him and makes him take it.

LATER EDIT: I see I got top honors, so I'll warm up the CC and y'all have a piece of pumpkin pie and whatever else y'all want on me!

Good Morning! Just coffee please. Thanks.

Sunny, with a high near 71. West southwest wind between 8 and 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

I got some ( how'd ya like THAT English teachersMischief) cabinet work done yesterday. Turned out pretty good. Took a few coats to get Red Oak to look like Dark Walnut shade wise, but when I left it was preeeee-ty close. We’ll see what it looks like when I get there in a few.

Chris- Cheapest cancer sticks in Williamsville are the Pall Mall’s too. $4.51 out the door. Tax title and doc fees included.

CNCharlie- Couple years ago Mom went in for chest pains and they gave here Nitro. Next thing you know she was under all these tests. Nothing. Great heart, great flow. Wonderful. Then yup you guessed it. Gerd. Hers is controlled by Prilosec and Tums. Mainly Tums lately.

Galaxy- Sad. I will pray extra for the boy. Had to laugh at the color problem. Been there too. Seat belt retractor recall also for me seeeeveral years ago. Interior of my ‘94 Dodge PU is red. You guessed it, thing came in grey. Luckily the dealer called the day before and told me not to waste a trip though they'd gladly sell and install a grey interior to match if I wanted. Nice bunch of guys there. Speechless????!!!! SurpriseSay it isn’t soLaugh. I’ve had that amazing surprise myself a few time. Odd isn’t it.

Ken- I agree with Ulrich. No need to hide. I know what you mean on the mistakes though. Actually I don’t mind them. (well I do at the timeBang HeadSuper AngryZip it!WhistlingGrumpy) Makes for a better setup in the end. PLUS! It helps when some newer person wants to try it that way and you can chuckle, scratch your chin and say, “well, I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” Yes, like Lee said, there should just be about 4 screws through the top, from the underside, holding the vent hood in place. Depending on who, what, when and why whoever installed it, there will be a power cord involved. IF you don’t have a plug in to the wall that you can see, shut the power to the hood off at the breaker before you remove the screw. Juggling the hood, though not heavy, with live wires is when you’ll discover they’ve hard wired it into a box you can barely reach and the wires need to be disconnected. Power off, well then they probably installed as outlet and a simple tug to unplug is all that is needed and the trip to the breaker panel was a waste. That’s usually the way it works for me. Rule number one for anything in the construction world, is the same as that in the car world. Just what Ray preaches to the Scouts, “Be Prepared” for anything.

Welp, best get to finishing the cabinet and the Kitchen will be done! On to the entance way with any luck.

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

EDIT: Oops! Just remembered. Brenda says since we are looking at selling, it's not and Entranceway. It's a Foy-yay.Wink

Good morning. It's 64 and cloudy. The high will be 83 and it looks as though there's a 40% chance of rain.

Still looking for some kind of ancient small computer that would be unrecognizable by most young people today. Doesn't matter what brand. I prefer one that doesn't work because quite frankly, with what I'm gonna do to it, it won't work at all. I don't care what kind of connector it has. Card edge or pin either one will do just fine. I have some old (not old enough) radio equipment here that has such connectors but it's recognizable as radio equipment even to the casual observer.

Morning all

well posedta get teh KIA back this AM. If not, I get a loaner car. They fixed the throttle body sensor that went into "limp home mode" already. BUT while it was originally to go in on Tues to replace the seat belt retractor assemblies, the seatbelt assemblies that came in are gray and NOT Sunset GOld. That won't work well for a matched interior/exterior vehicle in Sunset Gold!

Will find out later  how my friends son is doing I hope. Thanks for all the prayers for the boy.

Well not much to tell right now, I guess, for once I'm speachless ?!?

Good Morning,

Garry, Welcome home!

Ken, I bet if you look at my layout you’ll see at least 2 mistakes you didn’t think of, LOL! That range hood should be screwed in place.

We are getting ready to move the office,, not far just down the hall to the West side of the building.  We will have a window overlooking the river and rail lines so I guess it won’t be so bad.

It is lunch time in Sauerkraut country - I just enjoyed a large bowl of Petra´s special Tex-Mex chili soup. Boy, was it hot. Petra had raised some hot red chili peppers on a window sill in our kitchen and maybe she shoulkd have used one less of these critters!

Zoe, I´ll need a large glass of milk to cool down my burning mouth, please!

cudaken

Boy Bill, you are up early.

... not as early as I am, Ken Whistling Did not catch an hour of sleep last night - just too many worries, too bleak a future!

Ken - from what I could see here in the forum, your layout is a fine one - no need to hide!

I started a thread on how to improve the looks and the performance of a Bachmann HO 4-4-0, as I was offered one really cheap ( $ 20). To get it running nicely, it needs a major re-do job of the mechanism, a new motor, new tender wheels, the pick-up has to be reworked, DCC installed and a whole bunch of detail parts added - that´s not worth the trouble. It is a pity that no manufacturer dares to produce a quality version of this most "American" loco.

I will be going for a nap now - hopefully I will get some rest.

CUL, Folks!!

Boy Bill, you are up early.

Flo, I will take a BLT and a Diet Dew if you don't mind.

Well, I did not get much sleep, the Irish Wolfhound got me up at 3:00 AM! Lets just say I had some cleaning to do and leave it at that.Ick!

Charlie Are you going to share a picture with us of the new tank car? Why are you not going to do another one besides the fact you don't have one? Just don't feel it is worth the effort? That is how I felt about the Inter Mountain Hopper I did. With around 200 parts, when it was done it really did not look that much more detailed than the Athearn Hopper's I built.

Chris Shopping for Fire Trucks on line, sound sort of fun. I am guessing you don't have to bid on them like E Bay.

Galaxy Best wishes for your friend son.

Kitchen Cabinets Got 4 more doors and the last of the drawers shoot Tuesday, they will be going up today. I have 5 more to pull down, and 4 all ready off. That 9 that need's to be sanded and painted. Unfortunately, I only have room for 6 to dry at a time here in the garage. So looks like I won't have them all back up till Friday.

Range Hood How hard are they to take down? Ours is the sick green that was popular in the 80's and it needs to come down and be painted. There is no vent to the outside off the house, I would think it should not be that hard. But having never done one before I am only guessing.

Train Front At this point Jim Williams (I don't remember his screen name here at the site) will be coming by Thursday for a visit. He is starting a U shaped layout that will be 15 X 15 in HO. He is going to look at my Layout so he knows What Not To Do! Big Smile God knows I made ever mistake there was to be made!

Well, it is 5:14 AM and I am starting to feel sleepy again, think I see if I can get a 2 hour nap in.

Goooooooooooooooooood Evening, sedation please.

JOE: Sorry I didn't say it sooner, but deepest condolences for your loss. My Grandpa died back in '80, yet when I go to his farm in Kansas...for some reason...I still expect to see him sitting in his favorite chair, putting salt into his Budweiser. I have no doubt he's watching over me, and from time to time, pulling little pranks on me. I'm sure yours will do the same to you.

RAY: Your day sounds like the past month for me! If you get the time, could you elaborate a bit on them switch stands? Are they functional? Decorative only? Easy to install? A pain?

After training last night (Monday), which consisted of "Public Relations Communications Operations" (envelope stuffing), the newly formed truck committee met, of which I am a member. We found out THAT after three years of applying for FEMA grants to replace our unsafe-at-any-speed "crash" truck, our antique engine, and the old pickup; THAT we don't run enough calls per year to get a new fire engine. I kinda suspected THAT THAT was the case, I ran into the same issues with the Troy Mills Fire Dept. as I tried to get us a grant to replace an antique there too. So, we now be looking at good, used equipment. Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, I've been looking at hundreds of online listings for used pumpers. It's a good thing I like fire engines! I'm recommending at least a 1,000 gallon tank since most of our district is rural (no hydrants). We're looking for a rig with air-pack seats to get guys packed-up and ready to fight enroute. We're looking at International and Freightliner 4-door commercial chassis rigs...although I've seen a few "custom" engines THAT might w**k for us as well. "Custom" rigs are the cab over engine or cab-forward trucks you commonly see in the bigger cities, with nameplates like Pierce, Seagrave, E-ONE, on 'em. The commercial chassis get the same bodies, by the same companies...but are/were typically cheaper. I've found a few THAT come with six-man cabs, five of which hold the Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), "air-packs."

The question though, is how much of our savings can we/should we use...how much do we want to spend? How old of an Engine do we want? Among a dozen other unanswered questions. So far...we've agreed it should be RED, as God intended fire apparatus to be!

Hopefully, it will be off to sleep I go shortly. Last night, I was wide-awake until around 0500...THAT sucks.

A good night to all....good morning to Herr ULRICH.

Evenin' folks,

Flo, just a decaf for me.  I'm going to over to the back booth and just relax for a while.....

Been "one of those days!", Hurry up and wait, The faster you work, the slower you accomplish anything......  Well I actually did get quite a bit done in between looking for items you just used and can not find now.  been like this all day!  I had some home made Chicken soup and a toasted cheese sandwich for supper tonight and was in a hurry so as not to be late for the Boy Scout session for Chartered Partner Representatives (I am the guy from our church representing Scouting).  I go to slice some bread for the toasted cheese sandwich, take the little tie off the package, set it on the counter.  I slice the bread, put the rest of the loaf back in the package and spend the next 10 minutes trying to find the stupid little twist tie!GrumpyAngry  THAT is how the whole day has been!  Of course the meeting I "just had to attend" was a complete and total waste of time as there was not one thing presented THAT I didn't know several years ago.....  And they were going to do the "Youth Protection Training" THAT all reps have to now take...  I have had the training every time it came due for the last almost 20 years and still have a year on my current card!  I told the District Executive and he said, "Oh, I know.  You don't have to stay and take it now.......!!!  Grrrr!

I have 2 more days to get 2 weeks worth of stuff done by Saturday and they keep coming up with aother things THAT "Have to be done!"  Flo, another cup of decaf would be good, maybe with a bit of something to calm me down before the soapbox gets over my way.....?

I actually did get a lot done on the project.  The railbars have been installed (I ran out so I did the most noticeable sections), rails are now painted, a Hayes Bumper was removed for a siding in the yet to be finished room on the main MRR and is now protecting the end of the siding, and one of the Details West switch stands is installed.  Just 2 more switch stands to be finished (Tomorrow Morning) and installed, ballasting for the entire trackage, and some signs for the Humpyard Purveyance machines and one DTDP toggle switch THAT operates the 2 switched (electrical) frogs on the crossing.  May make it yet.

I also finished most of the paperwork for the meet.  Just need to get it printed out, and then get everything packed by Friday!!!

OK, catch you all in the morning!

Good Evening,

Barry,  my wife has aesophogitis and on Saturday night she had a major spasm attack. What a coincidence!  When she had the first one 4 years ago the docs thought she had a heart attack  but like you could find no evidence. They gave her some nitro and the next attack she used it and the pain went away and it turns out that such spasms respond to nitro.  After even more tests and finally and endoscopy it was determined that she had GERD. She is on protein pump inhibitor medication to control the acid. It really helps to sleep on a slope so we bought a  wedge pillow but she just found that by morning she had slid down it and then she got a burned larnyx from the acid. The solution to that was to buy an adjustable bed. It is motorized so you can adjust the tilt using a remote control. That was a very expensive bed but it did the trick. Basically the flap between the aesophogus and stomach has stopped working.  She is off to see her gastro specialist on Monday. She wants another endoscopy (would be the fourth) just to see if anything has gone wrong.  You really have to watch your diet if you do have GERD. There is good nutrition book available for GERD patients called Chronic Heartburn. I can send you details if send me a PM.

Galaxy,  one of my jobs at work is to lease cars for our field staff. They put on 120k miles in 3 years that is mostly highway. I have leased GM, Chrysler, Toyota, Nissan and now Kia. We have 8 Magentis in the fleet and so far they have turned out to be just as reliable as the Toyotas (Camry) and Nissans(Altima) for a lot less money. There was some grumbling at first but now that the guys have driven them for a year or so they admit they are a nice car. It is frustrating when you have a problem but it can happen to any car otherwise warranties wouldn't be needed.

Well I finally finished my PK2 tank car last night and have to say it was the most intricate kit I have put together yet. It is quite delicate so I will just leave it on the layout. Turned out nicely but I don't think I want to build another. Moot point anyway as it was an old LL kit from pre-Walthers days.

Just crazy at work but hopefully we will have the big project done by Friday, well we have to as that is really the deadline. If all goes well I will have a nice relaxing week-end but if it doesn't it will be a very anxious one indeed.

Too tired to even go run a train so think I'll just sign off for the night.

Evening all. Just stopping in briefly, so nothing for me, thanks.

Thanks for all your prayers; they are greatly appreciated.

Galaxy, your friend and his family are on the prayer list.

Sorry, don't have time to really read any posts. Ended up getting home MUCH later (about 5 hours) later than expected.

The wake is tomorrow evening, and the funeral is Thursday morning, so I'm not sure when I'll be in again. Prayers for all till then.

EDIT: Looks like I got TOP

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Evening, plate of cheeseburgers with a bucket of Mello Yello please and thank-ya.

GALAXY: Man...sounds like THAT kid is in a tough spot. Best wishes for him and his family for sure. I hope he gets the help he so badly needs. In order to truly get THAT help however, he has to WANT to be helped. I learned years ago it is pointless to try to help someone who doesn't want it. Hopefully, he makes some (good) decisions and gets things turned around. I would imagine it would be to his benefit to voluntarily go to rehab, rather than have it be court-ordered or do some time in the can for the pot/pot growing.

Not to make light of this guy's situation, but time was (not so many years ago), the "psych floor" was the only place in the hospital a guy could smoke. No, I was never a "guest" of said floor, but it was common knowledge among us EMTs/paramedics. While w**king in Creston, Iowa, we sent a disturbed lady to such a floor in Des Moines. She tore up one of our ER treatment rooms pretty good. Taking her outside for a smoke calmed her down almost instantly. We (me, my partner, the cops, and deputies) took up a collection so THAT the Union County Deputy taking her to Des Moines could stop at Casey's and get her a carton of smokes. I've had some people get downright nasty with me for having a) given her a smoke, and b) buying her smokes. "You were a paramedic, how could you do THAT?" Simple: always act in your patient's best interest. If having a smoke calmed her down, made her NOT a threat to herself, me, my partner, the rest of the staff, etc., and brought a little happiness to her messed up life; then darn-right I'll bum her a smoke.

In a heartbeat.

$10.50 a pack??? Geesh, I'd need to be locked-up if they did THAT to me here... It's bad enough THAT the cheapest in town (Pal-Mal) is up to $5-something. Of course, most of THAT goes to taxes and funding children's health insurance (in Iowa, anyway). IF the goal is to jack the price so more of us quit...what will they tax next to make up for the decreased revenue???

$5.00 for a can of Coke?

No Ma'am....no soapbox needed, I'm not ranting, just posing a rhetorical question whilst contemplating the ever increasing cost of my lung rockets.

Just finished up a huge article for THAT Editor, part of a "walk-up" to the Nov. 2 elections. Our 2nd Congressional District is in-play, with the incumbent (D) going up an (R) <in name only>. He whooped her the last time, will probably whoop her again this time. But, a Constitution Party candidate and a Libertarian are also challenging. THAT called for a "short" piece introducing the D and the R and their "issues." Welllllllllllllllllllllll THAT alone was around 800 words, and barely scratched the surface on where they stand on a handful of issues. Then, to be "fair and balanced," and comprehensive, I included the Constitution guy and the Libertarian. The final product is around 1900 words. She will have a stroke. But, so far, the "third party" guys haven't gotten much (if any) press from the other media outlets, AND they ARE on the ballot...seems to me we have a duty to include them.

On a sanity break from the monster article... I painted a boxcar this afternoon, laid down a very nice coat of CNW old yellow. The Harbor O' Freight airbrush did (as usual) a magnificent job for me. I then pulled the tape off just a bit too soon, and now have a nice "chip" out of the very nice coat of paint. Oh well, the roof is rust-bucket city (by design), so a rusty patch/dent/ding on the side won't look too far out of place.

I'm gonna step out the back door, launch a lung rocket or two, enjoy the cool night air...
