Bug list
Posted by tbdanny on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 7:03 PM

Hi all,

I figured that while the new forum is getting up to speed, it might be useful to have a single thread in which we can pop any bugs/errors we notice with the forums - then the admins can review it and fix them up.

I'll start with one I've just noticed - I checked the box to have replies to my wheel quartering thread emailed oto me, but didn't receive any email notification for the two replies I've gotten so far.

Cheers,

tbdanny

In the Post Message window, a new paragraph leaves a space between the paragraphs.  When posted it all runs together...  It should be one way or the other.

(new paragraph) 73

(another new paragraph) See what I mean?

What happened to the Inbox? All I see is Conversations, how you supposed to know you have a new PM?

Motley,

The number in brackets next to the conversations is the number of unread messages in your conversations.  It seems that all of mine were marked as unread during the changeover.

Seems to be using straight HTML for messages now. Just like when creating a web page, spaces mean nothing. Doesn't use codes like before either, at least for tag lines - mine wiped the link for my web page, and when I edited it and put in the [ u r l ] tag it didn't work, I had to highlight it and click the Link button to make it a link. Bototm line, the space betwene paragraphs thing I do not think is a bug, it's simply the way it works.

Hmm let's see what this does

You can edit directly in HTML, so &nbsp might work. Or not. Oh wait, I forgot I put it BEFORE the "Hmm let's see what this does" so yes, it does appear to work.

I used to be able to "toggle back and forth" easily between the TRAINS magazine forums and the MRR forums. I see no way to do that now easily. There is a button at the very top right side toolbar that says "trains.com Sites" that I assumed would allow me to pick the other magazine's forums, but it apparently is a dead link? Am I missing something?

Not really a bug but I DO wish the default for the "email me replies to this post" was OFF.

Edit: figured out how to get rid of it, in your profile set the Send Notifications under the email section to Off.

I'm reading through the posts on this thread and I've yet to see any "bugs" reported.  Instead of just putting up anything that just doesn't look right, why not try the site out for a couple of days and see if any real problems occur.  Most of the things here are just simple options one can choose or omit.

This may be an IE6 thing.  The "Resources" link at the top is a pull-down menu.  It works fine at home using Firefox, but here at work we are expected to do space-age technology with stone-age tools.

At the bottom of the page, there is a big blue area with a lot of links in white.  When you click on a link, it remembers you were there and changes the color of the link to....blue.  It's not quite the same blue, but close enough that the "visited" link is almost invisible.  A contrasting color would really work better.

When I do Edits, I get an error message and I have to re-navigate back to where I was, but the edit does take.

The "lock" icon is now dual-purpose and confusing.  It can either mean that the entire thread is locked...or that someone ticked the Locked: Do not allow replies box at the bottom of their post.

I clicked on the reply button in jasperofzeal's post to write this.  I guess I'll see whether it posts or not.

Add my "Edit error" message to the fray. While it does post the error message, it DOES make the edits to the posting. It's just annoying, and hopefully the powers that be will correct it in short order (at least, I hope so).

Hey guys.  Thanks for the feedback/bug thread.  I'll see what I can do to fix some of these items.  So far though the following items have already been taken care of.

-  Email notifications should be getting sent now.  Sorry about that.  There was a small hose up in the system that send the e-mail.  As a result some of you might have gotten a bunch of e-mail in a short burst this morning for any activity from yesterday.  This was just a one time thing and shouldn't happen again.

- I fixed the line breaking issue when writing a post.  Any line break you write in the text editor will now appear properly in your post.  This will automatically get fixed in all previous posts as well so you shouldn't have to go back and fix anything.

Quick note too.  If you ever want just a single line break when typing instead of a new paragraph (equivelant to 2 line break) you can acheive this by holding down the shift key when hitting enter.

- Conversations are kind of iffy in this version of the software.  Basically a conversation is a private message.  The reason they call it conversations in this version is because you can have send a message to more than 1 person if you want.  Thus having a conversation with multiple community members.  I know, it sounds kind of weird but unforuntaely I don't have much control over that.  Sorry guys

-  I'll take a look at the setting the default checkbox for e-mail replies to not be checked so you don't get unwanted e-mail in your inboxes.

Quick note on e-mail notifications too.  You have a lot of options as far as if you want to receive them or not.  If you see the green button at the top of the thread that says "E-mail me replies", that means you are currently not getting the notifications.  If you click it the green button should turn into a red "Stop e-mailing me replies".  So if its red you're getting them, if it's green you're not getting them.  You can also see all of your notifications by clicking the Forum Alerts link in the right column by your avatar and screen name.  You can also turn off notifications all together by clicking Edit next to Public Profile in the right column and scrolling down to the Email Configuration area.  You can change these settings to update how e-mail gets sent to your inbox.

- I'll look into the load times issue when it comes to editing a post.  I have noticed it too and will see if I can figure out what's going on in regards to that.

Thanks again for the feedback guys.  Please provide more as you find stuff.  I'm going to try and keep an eye on forum activity over the next couple of days to get some of the bugs hammered. out.  Bare with me.

Another thing I noticed. If I'm looking at something on say, page 2 of a thread and I click the 1 at the bottom to go back to page 2 it doesn't but instead comes back up on page 2.

Don't know whether it is a bug or done on purpose, but when you quote in a reply the entire post you are quoting is always quoted and it always ends up at the top of the reply....  For instance the next paragraph should be from Jeffrey and should say:  "Another thing I noticed."

.............???!!!  As you can see it ended up with Jeffrey's entire post being put at the top of the page.  very annoying when you want to put a quote in the middle of a reply and don't want to delete all the unwanted info.  Also a waste of bandwidth to quote the whole message.

OK guys.  I've made some updates to the edit post page.  It should be processing a lot faster now.  If anyone continues to have problems please let me know so I can further investigate.

I've also made the E-mail Me Replies to this Post checkbox unchecked by default.  The only reason this will be checked now is if you are already subscribed to the thread or if you manually check the box.  Remember that if you wish to stop receiving the notifications you can either click the red "Stop e-mailing me replies" button at the top of the thread, or click the "Forum Alerts" link in the right column of the webpage and unsubscribe to the forum thread.

I'll take a look at the page numbers next.  I think we've had this issue in the past with some other sites.  I just have to remember how I fixed it now Smile

Ah yes.  Lots more smileys in this version.  Well, kinda.  This version of the community software comes with more updated ones.  Normally we would've just replaced your old ones with the newer ones, however past experience with other forum upgrades suggested that a lot of the users like the old smileys too so we just mixed the new ones in with the old ones.  That way you have a lot of choices Big Smile
