Ray, The first picture definetaley looks like a Peregrine Falcon like Jeffery posted. The second photo looks kind of like a young bald eagle. Wikipedia says the Peregrine can get up to 2 feet, maybe that one is just a bit on the heavy side.
TSF, it's probably a good idea to let the law handle it.

Jeff- Sorry to hear about your parents dog. I'm sure your parents considered her a part of the family after 20 years. My prayers for their comfort. Sounds like the little gal had a pretty good life though.
I see Ray and Barry are having an argument about something. I can't quite make out what it‘s about. With their accents it‘s hard to understand them.
Ray- Beautiful bird! And what luck to see it, let alone for it to be there long enough for you to go home and get the camera! Wow! My guess is.... a big bird that makes mice and many other small animals veeeeery nervous. Yup, that's it for sure.
Jim- I'll be looking forward to your pictures. We haven't seen progress shots in quite some time. Of course you have been busy and the club had to move so it's no wonder.
Garry- Wish your Mother a belated Happy Birthday!
Chris- Ok, you have the same problem I do. Too much stuff wanted in not enough room. Sorry the wife's cat is stinky by the way. Take what you want the most regardless of the size you need, place it where you want it regardless of if it will fit.(on paper of course) Then take of THAT what you want the most, and see where you stand. Keep whittling, or whittlin' depending on where you're from, away until it either fits, or you realize it just won't fit even if half of it is a backdrop and walk away sulking.

TSF- As much as it pains me to say, I agree with all. Unfortunately today the law helps the victim and the victim is whoever gets attacked or beatup the worst regardless of how it got started or even who started it. It takes two to fight and if you hadn't fought you wouldn't have been in trouble. "what get my but beat?" That's what the laws for. " But you weren't around when I was getting beat and they wouldn't wait for the police to start!" File a complaint, but don't fight back. "What about self defense!?!?!?!" That's for a court to decide, meanwhile, have a seat in the back of the car for a free ride downtown. Are those cuffs too tight? Sorry, they won't be on for too much longer. Even the places in Texas where the Sheriff would grin at you and say, "I recon you shouldn't have done that and you wouldn't have got yerself beat up and shot" are dwindling down to just romantic memories of a time long gone. (sigh) Ah civilized people. Anyway, YOU probably will end up paying the price while they are out breaking into other peoples houses. Use the law. Trust us. It's better that way.

Well, looks like the end is near for the forums and the countdown begins. I wonder what the Diner will look like when it gets updated. Will it look the same? New paint? Will it be more stationary? Ah the possibilities. It's time for me to clear my cookies from the temp file but I'm afraid I won't get back in. Of course, the old ones probably wouldn't work with the new thing anyway.
I was going to respond to the DPM versus Atlas conversation, BUT, I see Dorothy standing in the corner over there rolling a toothpick around eyeballing me and a VERY large bulge in her Sweatjacket pocket. So I'll just say, yes now that I think of the actual construction process, maybe a DPM isn't the best for a first time. It is simple, but, as Lee said, (did you hear that? As LEE said) there are a couple steps that can be frustrating if you aren't experienced. How's that Dor....were'd Dorothy go?

My old Mercedes has died. The fuel injection pump died this morning, it needs a new exhaust, new shocks - that adds up to an amount, which would be insane to spend on a car that age. My dad will be "sponsoring" a used one for us, so I am right now searching for a good used whatever brand, but cheap car to keep Petra and me "afloat".

Thank you to all who gave me ideas about the Raptor...... Others (Family and Friends) came up with everything from a Broadtailed Hawk (close actually) to the Northern Goshawk (another very close call). I finally decided to contact a friend of mine (his son is one of my Eagle Scouts BTW) who is a Scientist at the New York Experiment Station here in Geneva to see if he or someone else their would be able to help. He almost immediately came back with:
"Hi Ray,Dave, my technician, is a great aficionado of birds, and he tells me there’s no doubt that it’s a juvenile red-tailed hawk.Best,Art"
I went on line and found a perfect match for my photo from a group of Red-tailed hawks. What made me think it was not the Red-tail was that, at least in the shade, I could not see any red in the tail feathers. Red-tailed hawks are very common round here and can be seen often sitting atop telephone poles watching for prey. They used to be commonly called "Chicken Hawks" around here as farmers way back when used to think they commonly liked chicken for lunch and used to shoot them on site. In actual fact they seldom prey on domestic chickens unless they are starving. This one is a BIG juvenile!!! As I told Jeffrey, at least twice the size of any Peregrine Falcon I have seen (although they can get to almost the size of this bird).

You and I have a similar car problem. After 16 years my old Century has given it up. The fuel pump is locked up, the injectors (all 6) are worn out and the injector control assembly is fried. On top of that there are several stress fractures in the underbody that keep breaking open even though they've been welded indicating that the metal is beyond it's fatigue limit. Just to get it running again (new fuel pump) would cost about $500 but there's a better than 50% chance the injector control assembly could explode. To replace it would be another $1,500. To fix the most critical problems would cost around $3,000 - $3,500. I could buy a halfway descent used car with brand new tires for that. Then the matter of the stress fractures which would sooner or later result in the body breaking in two. It's already dropped the rear sway bar once. Just getting over onto the shoulder was a wild ride that I'm sure would be an E-ticket ride at an amusement park. The rear end was moving around faster than a belly dancers hips! So that's why the emphasis is on getting the van going again. So far it's cost about $1,200 with my father covering the more expensive parts. I'm doing much of the work myself so it's going slowly, but it's almost ready. It doesn't have any a/c or heat but the Century didn't either so I'm used to that. One thing I'm going to do is remove the pusher fan from the front of the Century's radiator and mount it on the vans radiator and power it through a toggle switch and relay, both of which will be cannibalized from the Century. I'm going to strip it of anything I can use on the van.

Good afternoon. It's 89 and sunny. The high will be 94 an dit will be mostly sunny.Well I looked at the ignition lock in the old steering column from the van and there doesn't appear to be any easy way of changing them out so I'm just going to have to live with using separate keys for the ignition and door locks. No big deal there. Yesterday I looked at the hitching point on the tractor. For a while now we've been using a large steel bolt that's just dropped into the hole to connect a trailer or another piece of machinery such as our large air compressor, arc welder generator or oxy/acetylene rig. The problem is the threads are damaging the hitching point. So this morning I got a proper hitching pin for it. I'll install it the next time I go down to mow the yard. On the transportation front, my Century is dead. There's too much that it needs fixed that it's not worth it. So after I strip it for whatever I can use it's next stop is the scrap yard. I've had several offers from people who want to buy it for their own use but the electrical system is good for starting fires and the body is breaking apart and I'm not going to be responsible for selling somebody a death trap. The van is almost ready to go. I just have to put in new head lights, correct a fault in the tail light wiring and get it registered and inspected. That would make my father happy. He'd like to have his truck back. At the same time he realizes I can't leave my own yard without it, so he knows where it is if he needs it. If it was my nephew wanting to use it he'd tell him where to go and how to get there in the fastest most expedient way possible. I can't fault him for that. My nephew doesn't take care of anything that's not his.

Speaking of customer services Yesterday as I was doing some running in St Louis buying electric fly swatters. I stopped to gap a hamburger from a Burger King, ask the young dim wit what she had ready to go. She mumbled off two items, had to ask her again because I could not understand her. Heard double cheese burger and I said I will take that to GO. She took my money, then started putting paper place setting's on trays. Stood there for a minute and finally asked her "could you hand me my sandwich so I can go". Dim light went on, and she handed me my cheese burger. You would think the fact I asked her what was ready would be a clue I was in a hurry.
Train Front Well the fly swatter should be a clue. I hope by Saturday I will have a working Static Grass Dispenser. New section of the bench is all so working well. New spur will hold around 45 3 bay coal cars.
Floor Wars, measure once cut twice. Seems I had messed up the measurements when I had the guy at Lowe's cut the Luna there's a shock. I was about 3 inches off where the Luna meets the base of the cabinets. It shocked my self by fixing the problem in about 5 minutes. I cut straighter with a hand saw than the jigsaw, all so found out why. It is worn out, the metal collier that hold the blade to the shaft is loses.
Knew I should have use Body Filler! Again the the sub floor swelled around the patch! The DAP patching compound I used is Latex which I am guessing is water based. One of the areas I patched swelled up around a 1/4 inch causing a high spot. Broke out my air files and started leveling the high spot. Starting to make some headway when the paper wore out. I all so found that the filler was not completely dry. Saturday I am off to get some more air file paper.
My wife came out to see what all the racket was. Told her what happened and what I was doing to fix it. She looked at me and said "you know it is not going to be perfect". I replied "I know that, but what would it look like if I did not try?".

Went out to Boy Scout Camp this afternoon to pick up my log splitter. The Ranger had it all cleaned, oiled, greased and a full tank of gas in it when i got there. Guess he was glad to have it for his wood pile for the last month..... I had emailed him the bird photo and brought a print out with me. he is an avid outdoorsman and can identify anything that swims, crawls, hops, walks, and or flies around here. I showed him the photo and he said, yep saw it in the email. Yep THAT is a red tail. Then went on to tell me he and his wife a couple weekends ago after Boy Scout Camp was done, and before the Rotary Handicapped Camp started, went down to the waterfront on Seneca Lake for a picnic on the shore. His wife was going to bring her camera, and he told her nevermind, we are just going to sit and enjoy some free time!
They no sooner had supper than two very large raptors were flying right past them. He at first thought it might be a pair of Ospreys, but soon saw the Talons Forward approach one of the pair was doing and realized it was a pair Bald Eagles. The one pulled a good sized fish (Probably a Trout) from the lake and the pair set down on the shore a couple hundred yards from where they were and had their own picnic. His wife was not pleased as the camera was a mile and a half up the road at their house.........
BTW I saw a red tail that really looked like a Red Tail Hawk on a telephone pole on the way out to camp. It had the flaming red tail feathers so common with them.

Took the Wood Splitter over to my son's house. Good excuse to play with granddaughter #1 for an hour. Granddaughter #2 was taking a nap. #1 did enjoy not having to share me with her sister. On vacation (my kids 5th. wedding anniversary vacation with his wife and the daughters) Olivia got to ride on a "Real" train. Actually 7 1/2 inch scale. She thought THAT was the best fun she had ever had.
Got home, had supper, and then called my sister to make sure she knew the funeral arrangements for my BIL on Sept. 4. THAT, of course, blew the rest of the day. No model railroading again today. BUT! The missing parts came in the mail from SS Ltd. so i actually have some stuff I can get done.... maybe tomorrow.

Haven't been around and just chained to the shop floor for the most part. This time of year is just nuts anyway with the Lime Rock Fall Festival and then Watkins Glen on consecutive weekends. This year isn't any different as we're running 24 cars out of the shop combined only four of which are doing both weekends. Don't expect I'll be in much before the big move and remodelling next month but my best to you all. J.R.

Thanks for the birthday wishes guys. Yesterday was kind of uneventful. I was supposed to go out with a few girls, but they all had various excuses (yeah, I probably got stood up on all 3 of them ). Didn't get the list of train stuff I wanted (another SW10, a Tsunami, a speaker, lead sheet) but I did get $75. that's about 1/3 of the list of stuff, but I could get it my the end of next month if I save my money. Didn't drink anything now that I'm of legal drinking age.
I did bug a guy on HOYS for a Kato SD40-2 he was selling for $40. Chris might like it since it's a CN&W "Falcon Service" unit. IIRC, they would be around in my era. Dunno if I'd keep it as pool power, or try and see if I can swap it for a BN. I already know Katos can't really be stripped.
Garry, what kind of ferrai is that? My guess is an F335 or a F355.

It´s been a busy day for me - looking for some wheels. Seems as if I have found the right one - a used Renault Scenic minivan, 70,000 miles on it, but in a pretty good shape and for a reasonable price. I even get some cash for my old Mercedes, so the drain on my dad´s pocket book is not that big. I believe that Renault is not being sold in the US, but they are pretty comfortable cars. Not the built quality of a Benz or a BMW, but much improved over earlier years. Finding a car for us is not easy, as Petra ( 5´ 6") and I (6´ 5") both have to be able to drive it. Still it hurts to see the old Merc go

I got up and was on my way to the diner earlier this morning when I looked out my front window and saw my neighbor across the street (the guy who waters his trees....) carrying chunks of wood from a limb that came down a year and a half ago out to the curb. I quickly got dressed to "Help" him (get them moved to my driveway...) dispose of it. I already have a face cord stacked from the limb from early Spring. I was just about redy to go outside when the doorbell rang and the Pres. of the MLK Committee was on the porch with some completed documents from our scholarship winners. I will need to get checks out today to a couple. So I finally got outside and the neighbor grins at me and points to the wood. I yelled, be right over. My pickup is now sitting in my side driveway with a full load of cherry for the wood stove.
I guess I'm not the only SOB here in Geneva complaining about the traffic on the grade crossings. One of the Engineers from the FGLK had a very long Letter to the Editor in last nights paper. Seems a couple nitwits decide to race him to a crossing...... The second came within inches of moving on to the next world! He going all of 10 MPH, had his ditch lights and gyros on, blew the standard crossing signal and was already on the last blast when 2 cars decided to cross in front of him. The first had room, but the second almost got it! He threw it into emergency and just watched...... Took him all the rest of the day to stop shaking!

Probably won't post tomorrow so I wish everyone a "happy forum-in-waiting days" for Mon and Tues! I suppose we will have a new diner after they come back online sometime on Tues...if we are lucky....and If someone gets it started then, so on Wed I suspect we will see each other on a new forum in a new diner!
I sure hope we don't have to go through that business of signing in everytime we get back on the forum each tiem like we did this last change to this forum! That was a real pain in the {substitute your fave word here - I choose patootie- an interesting word}. I also hope when we post a post or answer to a post, that it actually gets posted this time...we had troubles before, so copy every post before you post it so if it disappears into the nether realms of the 'net, you can repaste and repost it! {just an alert and reminder of what happened last time}. Many of us will experience teh growing pains, I am sure, but we will adjust, I am also sure.
After a few cool days to tell us Fall IS coming, it will be back in the high 80's again and nice and sunny this week. Sure hope we have nice weather in Scranton, PA on the 4th for the Railfest! Usually whatever we are getting they are getting too, so will be nice if it is nice next Sat. If not, oh well, I am far from sweet and made of sugar so I shant melt, I guess. I shant, I shant! There's another interesting word.

Good job sounds like on the van, Jeffrey. Now if you can only solve the gremlins remaining in it, you should be fine, but I would start looking for a heating system of some kind for it cuz as hot as it has been this summer where you are, it could be just as cold again as it was last year down there, and I know it is NO FUN to be driving a vehicle without heat on a cold cold day! {blown fan motor and a blown heater core once}. We often thinks it makes little difference, but it is HUGE difference when you have no heat or defroster to defrost windows on chilly AMs.
Got antibiotics for my eyes and will ahve a script for dry eye tear formula to come up as soon as I am done with teh antibiotics. Picked up some Systain eye drops to lube my eyes in the mean time too{recommended by the pharmacist},and seems to be working well. I did not realize how much my eyes actually bothered me until I put the drops in. I thought it was just allergy eyes form the seasonal allergies I have and on the warm sunny days grass allergies have been high lately. But I am amazed at how "comfortable" my eyes feel now and how much the tearing {that I thought was allergies} has stopped. The opthalmologist said that though my eyes were tearing watery tears, my eyes were drying as fast as I blinked. I see the difference clearly now! {ha ha, tee hee, tee hee}. Now soon we start teh fall seasonal mold and mildew allergies soon as leaves around here will start to fall and it gets damp and dreary. NOt looking forward to winter! But it, too, will pass.

Well, gotta tend to my chores. WE are having polska kielbasa with onions and peppers sauteed on a roll tonight. Bad for us {me}, but great tasting and haven't had that in a loooooong while so I think we {I} deserve it. Lost 8 pounds of the 30 pounds the cardiologist wants me to loose. Now just to loose a few more....as we go into winter though, I fear I will gain again as I tend to do, shucks. {yet another interesting word}.

It was a funny feeling to turn in the keys of the Merc. I quite liked it, but $ 4,000 for the repair job was just too much. It´ll be shipped to Africa, where it will be repaired by locals and most likely end up as a taxi for the next 30 years .
Petra is enjoying here GULAG days as much as I did in the beginning of this year. Waste of time is the best to say about it. Those weeks will pass, and we still have our dream of moving over the Big Pond into friendlier territories.

Please pray for my wife this week, as she moves the rest of our house from Pennsylvania to Virginia. Unfortunately I cannot be there to help with the move, as I have to work tomorrow. Which is actually a GOOD thing, I get to do my Engineer’s Qualifying Check Ride at Washington DC Union Station (Otherwise known as Washington Terminal)! Thankfully her uncle has offered to drive the moving truck down here. Which will be happening on Tuesday… Thank you all for your prayers!

I had a ‘00 F-150 before I got my Hyundai Elantra… I miss being above traffic, but the trade off of more than doubling my gas mileage has made it somewhat worthwhile. I am praying that you will make it “over the Pond”!

I Model the New Hope & Ivyland RR (Bucks County, PA)
I was busy stripping the Century for any parts I can use on the van. I decided to see if I could get the fuel pump to work and was turning the switch for it on and off trying to get it to start working again. I stopped for a moment with the switch on and just stomped on the floorboard (with my good foot) and said 'work or die you piece of crap! The fuel pump whirred to life and I started the engine. It ran OK, not great but OK considering the electronics for the injector manifold are fried and the injectors are worn out (345,000 miles of use will do that). I didn't run it for very long though as I had already removed both radiator fans and their relays. I also removed the 100 watt cone speaker for the air horn and disconnected the power cables for the light bar, it's control box and the 2-way radio. Probably tomorrow I'll remove the light bar and the 2-way. Another project will be to disconnect the fuel line and use the fuel pump (for as long as it works) to pump the gas out of the tank.
Quick Bob Villa question. I have two more bad spots I have to fill before I can lay the Luna. If I paint the spots with Latex paint, do you think that will keep the wood from swelling while the sub floor patch filler is drying?
Time to remove the moldings.

Latex paint is not water resistant not water proof. If you use something like polyurethane sealant or spar varnish or other water proof wood sealant you should be ok, but of course that stuff smells a ot more. If you already have multiple layers of latex stuff already applied I wouldn't mix and match or you could have a mess on your hands. Seems you've found your mountain to roll a boulder up. Well, the biggest bad spots are level, cutting the inserts I need around the stove and counters. So the bolder is half way up the Mountain. Spots left to patch are about 6" around.

Another Bob Villa Question How strong is the smell of Liquid Nails Carpenter glue and what is it cure time? Reason I ask, my biggest patch is 2.5 feet by about 5 feet. This was the section I used the Henry Floor Patching Compound. It is pretty much Concrete. I am wondering at this point if I will be able to screw or nail through it effectively. I was wondering if I could use some glue to help the screws hold down the Luna. That way I could use fewer screws.
