Good Morning. Just coffee please. Knees are burning already so it could be a long day.
Wow. I tried to walk through the woods today, I loooove getting back to nature and enjoying it's wonders. However, there seemed to be some annoying things there. So, I contacted the locals and am seeing about having the spiders, snakes, and bugs removed. Also there should be fencing put up so any bears don't get in, nor the coyote or two that strolls through there among some other animals that could be deemed pests by me. The grass needs cut and the leaves need raked up. There is a lot of deadfall around too. It should also have a paved pathway to walk on and some benches to sit down on so you don't have to get your shoes dirty. Also I think a picnic spot with restrooms and running water should be added throughout the woods with plenty of trash cans placed along the way.
Sound familiar?
I have no problem with, and think it's great, people saving energy or recycling or any of the many things people do to "save the planet" I do many things myself. I just don't believe that me buying CFL's will save the planet nor do I think they are the "responsible" thing to do. I buy them because they last longer and use less energy than incandescent. Therefore helping to save money on my bill. And therefore more money for TRAINS!!!! I recycle as much as possible not to save the planet, but to cut back on the landfill space to keep them open longer without having to look for a new place possibly next to ME!!
Well, I see Flo stopped the conversation before it got too political. Kinda heading dangerously close there. Looks like most of us see things pert near the same way. I do believe if we lived in the same neighborhood we would all get along famously. Through a series of tunnels, can you imagine the railroad we would have going from basement to basement to basement?
The Statement I agree with THE MOST, and by FAR is that statement made by J.R. and I quote (ahem) "I may agree or disagree with what you write, but I respect your right to say it." THAT is what makes the diner a place to wish the whole world was like. If you disagree with the way someone feels, you either, politely offer your opinion, have your discussion, maybe change your mind or just agree to disagree or simply stay out of the conversation if it's not to your liking. You know, if you allow me my big gas guzzling pickup truck parked in my drive next to your hybrid or don't complain because your children gets dog poopies on their shoes when they cut through MY backyard, I probably won't burn leaves in my backyard when the wind is blowing your direction and/or your windows are open or even while you're home for you to smell if it bothers you and I'll probably not raise a stink about the path you want paved in the woods. It's called getting along. A little give and take. Seems like lately too many people want it all their way and it just seems to turn into a head butting contest. The world is not built for anyone person or group. It's for us all to share. And get along we must or else! What's that Flo? Or else what? Oh.., I don't know. My Mom always used to say that when ever she wanted us to do or to stop doing something.
I'm thinking of adding a touch of cinders I received in my garage sale find of the year to my track ballast to add just a hint of grungy age to it. Hmmmmmm.

Good morning. Another hot day today.
Thanks for the comments on the car. I have to go by the LHS today, and see if I can find a few new projects. Also today I am going to a community college and see about getting a degree. Maybe in graphic arts or something. I'm 30 years old, and haven't done anything with my life yet. Its time to make a change. My wife has a interview this morning on a teaching job. It is VERY hard to become a teacher in PA. She's going back to school for another masters degree in a few weeks. She hopes that helps her chances. If we are still where we are now, we plan on moving in about 5 years or so.
Hope everybody has a good morning.
"Rust, whats not to love?"
Good morning All,
A bit of rain just now and a break in the temp but it'll get back up in the 90's by days end anyway. Sorry to see Charlie is going to opt out, but it's his decision and I can respect that. We have strayed pretty far from home on occasion recently but I would like to note that we've done it all without any nastiness. I may agree or disagree with what you write, but I respect your right to say it.
Keith. I usually spray bomb the entire track in ruddy brown primer and then go from there. I agree the color you used is a bit light for rusty rail, but with a little experimentation you can get a good mix and look. Here the ties and rail usually end up looking similar as the rust bleeds off the rail onto the creosoted wood staining it. Add some grime down the middle from engine droppings and you have a start. Mains and secondary lines also have some differences because of differing maintainence and traffic. Entire tomes have been written on this, but the best way I've found is to observe the real thing and take some pics (i usually find a bridge or high vantage point) to refer to at your leisure. Going to an area at or near where you wish to model is a plus as the rail seems to vary greatly depending on local weather and conditions, type of ballast, etc. As I said, tomes have been written.....
Enough about cars and polytics - how about them Mets...... J.R.
Good Morning Folks!
Just some strong coffee for me please.
Thanks to everyone that replied to my request, and the links. I didn't realize, I should i have also been searching for powered locos also, I figured that a "dummy" would have been a lot cheaper.

Good Morning
I had a deluge this morning--about 2" in about half an hour. Not bad considering no rain in the past two weeks. But we do get that humidity right up here boy.
There was a bit of that strictly "VERBOTEN" topic mongering around here wasn't there? I'm surprised that FLO did not lock us up in a closet someplace!Good thing we did not have to deal with VINNIE!!!

Wisconsin Railfan Good Evening All! Nothing for me today, I was home sick. Not sure if it's bad allergies, or if I have a cold. I am looking for a "dummy" C&NW loco HO scale, for the diorama I am working on. If anyone has a link to where I can buy one, or if you have one you would like to part with, please let me know. I was able to get the rocks painted, and the ground color on the diorama, it has been a fun first time project for me and the boy so far. I hope to get the ground cover on this week, when I start feeling better. Steven

What cha have in MInd? lol.. You ever go fishing? Sometimes you get a nibble and sometimes you don't. But when you do, you've got one!
I briefly went on Ebay to see what is out there. Personally if you just go fishing, you might find something for under $20.00. And have and extra engine to boot. Now I have over 600 wins on ebay. And thats alot. I live on the west coast and I believe I've got the jump on most ppl. Down to the last 4 secs. If you are not around and you need someone to bid on it.. I'd be happy to bid on it for ya.. and send it.
Here's what I found.. just using a simple search of C&NW.. sorted out by 'shipping and loweest price first.

Just keep looking, but if you can find one under $20 bucks.. that ain't that bad.~

Steven, AFAIK athearn's the only one who makes dummies. If you look on that auction site you can find really good engines for less than your probably paying for your interwebz.
Chris, nice chop nose. Looks like you have a split windshield on yours, how'd you do that one. I've been wanting to model some BN chop-noses but haven't figured that part. Looks like I'm a bit further behind the curve, I'm getting mostly MDC and BB kits probably made before I was born. I do have one McKean car, an ATSF centerflow hopper. IMO the athearn one is better, but the atlas ones is the bomb. Say would that plano piece for the nose gong work out for doing the np/slsf nose gyralights?
Agree with you on the hybrid/volt thing. I wouldn't drive one because they usually look like crap, the batteries would be hazardous in a wreck (local drivers are crazy; already had to dodge like 5 people this month), and what happens when they have to be replaced? (taken to a specalty place and probably have to pay for them) not to mention the batteries contain some mineral only found in China. Frankly I'd much rather have a 2011 V6 mustang for mileage. Some test they got 48.5 mpg with a car that get 315 horsepower
Vincent
Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Amen, and well-stated. But, I'm sure I strayed into "VERBOTEN!" territory quite a bit here the past few days. Then again, I didn't say anything here I wouldn't have said had we all been sitting around "The Friendly Cooker" in Wamego, Kansas...my favorite "real world" diner.
KEITH: I see you're battling the same battle I've fought a few times: a "good" color for rail. Floquil's "rust" never looks right to me...for much of anything. I tend to mix it into other colors. "Rail brown" seems kinda...welp, "green" in tint. Their "RR tie brown" is a handy weathering color...makes a good "railroad grime" to my eye. I'm thinking (always dangerous) THAT when I get to the point of laying track, I'll probably mix Rail Brown, RR Tie Brown, and Grimy Black in a highly un-scientific manner.
In other words, I'm looking forward to YOUR experiments, so I can see what w**ks and what don't!!

Very helpful if you need to make a curved structure. The natural finish of the foam blocks also resembles concrete at least to me in Horribly Oversized gauge.
Thank you.. all of you~
Well I had a good idea what I needed to do to make a bridge for a curve. Take a look!
Now as far as working with a stone image, well I just couldn't figure out how to make the arch.
If you look at both of the 2 strips of cut plastic, well both were the same, cut both straight. The curved one I sat down for a show.. for an hour and worked it. Sort of kneading it, and spreading it apart only on one side. It was curved enough for me to cut splits along the top edge of the arch. Thus making the turn over the arch tolerable. Working with super glue gell wasn't easy either.
Now for something new and totally exciting.
Ta dah~ Floquils
To be honest.. I'm not too excited about the colors. These colors.. particularly that rust color seems to be lacking. I feel I could do better with craft paints. Right now.. between the fllquill 'tie brown' and 'rail rust' I feel like something is missing. Oh not the inside part of the rails.. I left that for comparison. And of course this is N scale.. but it just doesn't do it for me. And of course this is not the main lines, I probably would use a 'Grimmy black'. Right now, aside from painting the inside rails I feel as if that the rust.. needs a darker color at the bottom of the rail. Sort of a gradiant of rust..with grime.
What do you guys think? Am I expecting too much for N scale? Perhaps I thought this would look more of what others had done. I just walked away saying .. "Is that it? I could do better with craft paints!" Although the floquil paints went on rather easy. I need some honest answers from friends.
Thanks in advance.

Evening all, bit of insomnia going on with me right now, not sure what's up.
If ya wanna talk taxes, talk to a trucker, he's the one who has to pay a ton of them just to operate on the highway, never could figure out how the gov't could screw up trucking, but they did. I usually stay out of the discussion, especially with the hours-of-service rules they are currently redrawing, some so-called "safety groups" feel we should only drive 8 hours a day, we can currently do 11. Hope they like skyrocketing costs of things, due to costs of trucking going up......
Hey, is that Flo I see by the door, the one with the skillet-
//ka-chuck--BOOM!!//

Good....evening?
Not sure what I'm dazed and woozy from, getting klonked twice by Flo and her skillet...or the Johnson County Planning and Zoning Committee meeting I just returned from!
SAWYER, was it you asking about the death tax? It's a wonderful little thing where a dead guy's estate gets taxed incredibly. THAT makes it harder for the living to, well, keep the estate (farm, business), or really do much of anything with it. I guess some in the govt. feel it's their last chance to reach into your pocket... And they want to grab ALL they can...
JR: If you want a Volt...more power to ya! I just find it a bit odd how the guy who said "...under my plan for Cap and Trade, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket" really wants us driving glorified golf carts and giving up our hydro-carbon powered vehicles. Then they want us to pay through the nose to charge 'em up??? I heard it takes up to 15 hours to recharge one on regular household current, faster on 220 volt (with an extra $2k adapter). The gas engine is...a generator for the electric motor. But, like I said...you want one, go for it! I just don't want to be told I have to have one too...and I know some who would do THAT, in a heartbeat!
With hybrids and "alternative energy vehicles," let the free market decide. If a guy wants a car THAT runs on poop...have at it! Just don't tell me I have to drive one too. For me, none of the electric golf carts on steroids will w**k. It's 30 miles to the Solon office, add another 8-10 for North Liberty Jobs. It's about 50 to Tiffin (Clear Creek Amana high school), and almost 60 to Oxford (school board meetings/softball games). Some would say "move closer to your w**k." Why? The wife and I chose our house for a number of reasons, knowing full-well it's 35 miles to her job. We're 40 miles to Cedar Rapids, 40 to the Peoples' Republik of Iowa City, 40 to Clinton, 40 to the Quads... But, some (like the former cousin) would say ultimately, we should be forced to move to small, efficiency apartment-style housing WHERE WE W**k. Thus, we would never have to drive...ever. Everything would be within walking or bicycling distance.
Doesn't sound much like America to me... or like much of a life.
What's THAT Ma'am? Good thing Flo went home for the night???
Yes Ma'am....
VINCENT: We're in the same boat, I've been gathering up cars and locomotives for...20+ years in anticipation of a layout. The odd thing is, I'm now buying the Front Range and McKean kits I didn't get then. The whole pre-order/limited edition thing has kept a lot of the "new" stuff away from me. Maybe 20 years from now, I'll find them dirt-cheap on THAT auction site...
WISCONSIN RAILFAN (or something close to THAT): I saw your post about wanting a dummy CNW loco. Anything in particular? I still see some Athearn bluebox GP-50s on TheBay... Of course, it needs a nose bell and winterazation hatch, but it isn't too tough to do either. Plano makes a nifty brass template for cutting the notch for the bell. It's also not too tough to remove the radiator fan and slap on the boxy winterazation hatch. Toughest part is matching Athearn's paint. Otherwise...how's your paint and decal skills??? Microscale and Herald King have several CNW locomotive sets, and the paint scheme isn't too bad to mask-off. I tend to spray the green first, THAT way, if/when the yellow bleeds under the tape, it's a heckuvalot easier to touch up than having green bleed onto the yellow! In general, you're probably about stuck looking at TheBay, probably for something by Athearn. I don't think I've seen any Proto 1000/2000 offered as dummies, nor Kato, Atlas, etc. If you really want some fun, grab an Athearn bluebox GP-7 and chop the nose...
GARRY: Nasty looking head-on for the SOO...where was THAT???
I'm gonna have a seat at the RC... and try to figure out how to write an article out of the meeting I covered tonight.
Blazzin Chris, quote: 'Taxes for everybody go up 1/1/11... " I get what you mean. Jeanne tells me her / our health insurance that the company provides, well we will be paying taxes on that. It is now counted as income? Wow, I think he pays an easy ten grand a year, and NOW we will be taxed on it?

Evening gang!
Sorry for being tarty as of late... (what's new, right?!?!?!?!) and also sorry this is just a quick stop for tonight, but I had to let everyone know what I saw this afternoon on my way home from work.
The route I take to and from work, takes me over and under CSX's mainelines here in Syracuse. Well, on my way home, on the lone tressle I go under by Crouse-Hinds' Cooper Industries, was a mixed freight. Just west of this tressle, is a set of signals and the train was stopped. Well, at the point... 2 IC&E engines and a blue and yellow paint job. Never seen them before, and if I was at a stopping point, or wasn't limited by time tonight, I would have stopped and snapped some pics to post for all to enjoy.
Anyways, I hope everyone is doing good. Prayers to those in need.
Take care!

Good Afternoon All,
Is the coast clear? I have enough lumps on my noggin already (CFO says it's the rock in my head trying to escape). I'm not going to get into th whole tax discussion thing except to say that we all need to band together and vote rather than let a small sliver of the poplation decide how things are gonna be run.
On another note, I am actually looking at a leased Volt. Seriously, I drive less than 25 miles a day when I'm at the shop and a hybrid I could charge off the regular grid might make sense. The fact that it also has a gas motor and a much longer range for longer trips is appealing - more so than a straight electric. You also have to understand that in a previous lifetime i was head of a research shop developing new cooling systems to cut emissions and increase mileage so I have a history and prior interest. If I ever get outof the racing business, i'd like to try to develop a diesel electric for the street. Scaled down it might be a good thing. Yes I know we rely on public power that is anything but clean or efficient, but it's probably easier to change generating plants for the better than the millions of cars we have scurrying around. Probably a strange opinion from someone who builds racing cars for a living but there you go. And no, I'm not planning on getting rid of the supercharged Focus!
Ray - love the quarry you started. Will it be operating or abandoned?

Looks like I missed in on some of the fun. At least that skillet was cold. My mom used to hit me with a HOT one from time to time. Trust me a cold skillet is less worse than a hot one.
Robby, looking good as usual
Jim, something like that, lol. I don't actually have a layout. What I'm doing now is stockpiling stuff so that when I do build one I don't have to hunt for cars and rolling stock. The discontinuation of kits and the limited production fad have a lot to do with that. But yeah, I'm starting to run out of room...
Allhegeny, We have bear issues around here. One was hit by a truck a little bit (as within 250 feet) down the road. Some neigbors have said they've seen one on my front yard a little before dawn. Luckily I haven't run into one when walking out to my car in the morning.
Jeff, yes sir that looks a lot better. except for Chemsitry if the teacher can't teach, but I've heard he can so I may actually learn about elements this year!
Chris, nice pick you tacked up while running away, good skill. A death tax? seems the government won't even let us do the one thing we absolutely have to do in life.
Galaxy, you have a good point there. and I can knock out my homework, or at least a chunk of it, in study hall.
TSF, looks like your mind will be working at the end of the day man. I wouldn't mind going to the weight room and lifting instead of study hall, but my next two years are pretty much preplanned as far as courses so I won't have time to take weight lifting.

AmanaMedicTMarshAh your disowned cousin. I know the kind. Let me guess, she also feels the government should be smaller and that taxes are too high, all the while screaming the government should give more money to the people and offer more services so people don't have to do as much. Close but not quite Oh King of Toddland! She doesn't think the government is big enough! She feels no problem is too small for the govt. to find a "solution." Taxes? Well, of COURSE we don't pay anywhere NEAR enough in taxes...in her warped mind. Taxes for everybody go up 1/1/11... she doesn't think they go up enough! She's really bought-in to the whole "redistribution of wealth" thing. What does she do for a living? She's living in the world of academia, pursuing either her 2nd masters degree...or a doctorate, not sure which (really don't care). She is one who has no problem with the government "nudging" people into "better decisions." She wants limits on how much/how often you can eat meat. She wants limits on how warm/cool your house can be. She wants limits on how much electricity you can have. Have you seen the Chevy Volt? $41k car with 40 mile range? She would think we should ALL buy one..."to save the planet."Uh-oh....here comes FLO, and she's wielding a large cast-iron skillet!!!!!!! *KAAAA-WANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!* *THUD* Chris
TMarshAh your disowned cousin. I know the kind. Let me guess, she also feels the government should be smaller and that taxes are too high, all the while screaming the government should give more money to the people and offer more services so people don't have to do as much.

Look at it this way Sawyer, you get the tough stuff done early in the day, and coast on after lunch!

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Now THAT the birdies have quit flying around me.... I can just see JEFF with an evil grin...doing a little "unauthorized chemical experimentation" in the chem lab... The last chemistry class I took was Chemistry of Hazardous Materials (fall, 1996). Once we got out of "simple salts," I was well and truly screwed... I vaguely remember "benzene rings," but the only thing THAT really stuck was Tri Nitro Toluene, TNT.
KEITH: Yup, ALL tax brackets go UP. A little "hope and change" for ya... Death tax is back, and the "marriage penalty" is back. Apparently Washington DC thinks they get first dibs on my money...and then graciously allows me to keep whatever they don't take.
WHOOPS!
Darn soapbox. Oh no....FLO???
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
FLO! Let me quickly tack up this photo.........

Why is it I am hiding from weathering the tracks. I want to anything today other than weathering track. I am not even sure what method to use, the floquils or the waterbased paint.. and just wash it with a thin coat. Then again if you really know me.. I'll probably get some old track and see. Oh don't worry.. I love 'Show and Tell' .. then you can laugh and chuckle~
Chris, quote: 'Taxes for everybody go up 1/1/11... " I get what you mean. Jeanne tells me her / our health insurance that the company provides, well we will be paying taxes on that. It is now counted as income? Wow, I think he pays an easy ten grand a year, and NOW we will be taxed on it?
I think I am going to go weather some track. "STop the world I wanna get off~!"
Ray, that compliment from you means a whole lot.. thanks.. I need positive strokes these days.
