Steven, go to Pat Catan’s or Jo Ann fabrics and buy the water based paint.  It’s $1 to $3 for a large bottle and it’s basically the same paint used on MRR stuff but you get 8-12 oz for $2.

I can see Robby doing weathering now… and maybe we can weather this happy tree and maybe there is a little owl and her family living in the tree, there now we will add some happy branches here so maybe a small bird will be happy to………  I did enjoy Bob Ross shows you couldn’t help but marvel at his work and laugh at his commentary while he painted.

Thank you for the response,  I have a Jo Ann's close by, and the lady likes to go thereBig Smile so that will work out perfect.   Do I use a thinner mix of 4:1?  If so, what thinner is recommended?

Thanks again.

Use Distilled water, regular tap and bottled water has trace amounts of chlorine, salt, and other minerals in it that will cause fisheyes, alligatoring, or orange peel effects in the finished paint.   Remember you are buying water based paints.  Not sure on the ratio, I’ve been spray painting for over 20 years and just eye ball it.  You can always add more water to paint, but you can't remove it very well.

You should avoid using solvent based paints in your airbrush it causes the rubber and vinal parts to crack.

Check the Pat catan's web site or the Sunday paper they always have coupons.  I have friends that those waterbased paints are all they use unless they need a glossy finish.

 Mornin' everyone!

Well, I guess there is some morning left....  Zoe I'll have a short stack of blueberry pancakes and my dark roast coffee please.  Oh yes some fresh Canadian Maple Syrup would be good.

Just got off the phone with my son about an hour ago.  My BIL, Bernie, passed away this morning. Don't know yet what the schedule for calling hours, funeral, and other family things will be.  Thankfully he had a quick end as he failed very quickly over the past couple of weeks.

Need to get going.  Catch you all later!

 Just a quick stop.

Went to a LHS and grabbed up a couple of Railbox's.   I will start on one tomorrow.  I will probably patch it to a CSXT.

Lee.......No pun intended but I did make a tree (to put on a wall) out of paper  last week.  It was for my wifes classroom.  I added leaves, a tire swing, a hole in the trunk.  She liked it.   I guess I'm heading into that direction Whistling.

Ray.......Sorry to hear about your BIL.  Angel

I was waiting to see if any trains come by and I took this.  Its not a train but they were getting ready to do some track work.

Jeffery Looks like you are well on your way to the new layout. Have you came up with some way to hide the AC unit?

Thank you for your comments on Richard passing this last Christmas. It was not going to be a good one anyway but Richard passing was the icing on the cake.

On the train front!  I all most did it, broke my record on how many cars I could pull around the layout. My old record is 65 cars using a pair of PK 2 E-6's. Tonight I was running my PCM Big Boy, and after a few brews I started lashing up more cars. Stared with 20, then 30, then 40, then 50 and finally worked my way up to 60 cars. Big Boy did not care and keep chuffing away. Then I went for 65 cars, Big Boy did not care again.

Then I decide to go for the gusto and lashed on 70 cars. Big Boy still started pulling at 1% power (got to love the Loksound 3.5 decoder) but at last stringlining started to happen on a 26 inch turn. I added the PCM Y6 b as a rear end helper to take some of the strain off the cars. Well the Big Boy stared up grade and the Y6 b started pushing a little to much. Rear car's jacked knifed and I was done.

I was close and was garbing car I had not ran in years. I made more than one spider mad! Big Smile Far as pulling power, there was plenty. Review of the PCM Big Boy was around 100 cars on a level bench. Train is 44 feet long and going around 4 turns up and down grade. That is pulling power!

 See you folks Wednesday.

Todd,  now don't get lost on youtube.. but talkin of small towns and country music... well here's another 'Foot Tapper'  Ringlin Ringlin by Jimmy Buffet.  So if you like country, pull up another page and have some music to listen to while you read my post.

Keith, I love the last town tag on that video - "outskirts..."!Laugh And many thanks for all those photos from Bob - excellent! I can imagine how much fun that was - about like the proverbial "So much fun it should be illegal..." Smile,Wink, & Grin Okay, I forgot - which boxes of P2K stuff you were asking about (on the directions)? Mine are HO, but I'd guess that (unless they numbered the parts different in N scale) the directions (once I know which one you're "looking fur...") should w**k about the same.

Speaking of P2K kits, I think I WILL need to get out the Optivisor thingee to continue. The tabs, pins, and the holes and slots they're supposed to fit into, are kinda small - and the plastic is too soft for how little they are. I bent some pins on back of a couple of the tack boards when trying to fit them into the holes. I might've got the hang by the time I was gluing the ladders on. Haven't got the one finished yet, but here's as far (fur?) as I got:

A lot of little bitsy stuff under there, all right! Probably want to allow myself about 2-3X as much time as usual...

Jeff, you're making progress there (along with all that plaster dust... Wink). Do you have somebody to help you with hauling out the old layout pieces you won't be using? Don't need to cause yourself any extra pain with hauling out if there's a better/simpler/easier way. Thumbs Up Wow!! Saw your photo from mid-day Monday - that looks like after Sherman went through Georgia, or maybe the aftermath of a major bombing run through the area! Shock

Todd, Missy's a good lapdog. It's just that your lap is a bit undersized for her... Whistling Speaking of fairs, a few more weeks and it'll be our district fair here. Yep, and NO parking on the street for the duration at my place (I live a couple of blocks away from the fair site).

Chris - good to hear I wasn't the only one oversleeping yesterday. Zzz Huh? Oh, nothing...

Dang, Garry! Shock You reminded me that I haven't been to that frozen custard place except maybe once this summer! Gotta correct that this next weekend (payday's comin')...Dinner I never did hear of any damage at your place, so I'm guessing you dodged that storm that messed with Gus' dock, right?

Vincent, that sounds like a very good price (it does run and all, right?). Yeah!! Good fishin'!

Robby, bummer there. Sigh I'd keep on trying on the house loan - until you find someone who realizes that school's don't do things the same as banks do (and how schools won't say anything beyond the current semester). Keep at it, and try like heck to get that Pell Grant - much better than the other kind(s)! Or keep on selling those cars on the 'Bay... BowThumbs Up

CudaKen - for what it's worth, the P2K couplers don't fasten on any better. They give you screws, but the screws (IMHO) seem a tad too small for the width of the hole. I wound up gluing the pocket covers on while I let the thing sit on its 'back'. (See my pics above) I might have used some Athearn screws (I ordered a packet of them from my LHS) on the Accurail (triple) hoppers I built so far. I'm considering that for my P2K's at the moment. We'll see how the next P2K kit goes together first.

Lee, your background sounds great - post the photos, please!

Hey, Rob, you and I are both probably on the census bureau's 'Naughty' list. I had a census taker show up at my door (several weeks after I had given up on them showing, had picked up a form at our library, filled it out and mailed it in), asking me to answer their questions. I told her that I'd already filled out and mailed in mine, and wasn't going to spend my time duplicating that effort, and closed the door on her. I wasn't rude, but I probably wasn't marked down on her list as 'cooperative', I'm sure. But we won't get that ol' soapbox fired up again, thanks...Smile,Wink, & Grin Rob, do you have a big dog (scary one, even) that you could borrow from someone and tie it up near your 'front' door? Whistling Just wonderin'...

If any of you Diners don't feel old enough already, take a look at the Beloit College Mindset List for the college class of 2014 (The entering freshman class this fall) here... For openers, most don't know how to write in cursive, and don't think email is fast enough...Banged Head (No offense to our younger Diners, who I'm sure are aware of a lot of things that THAT list indicates are lacking from a lot of freshmen's education). Reading that list is about guaranteed to boggle your mind.

Ray, sorry to hear about Bernie's passing, but he is at peace (and not in pain anymore) now. Will keep you and the rest of the family in my AngelAngel.

Think I'll have another glass of wine please, Chloe. Thanks! I'll just kick back here in the window booth and watch that owl over there in that tree... Whistling  A nice balmy 12 C in Moosonee this evening. Here in Cape G-land, it's 26 C (79 F), much more bearable than last week's weather. Can fall be far behind? Ah.....

May you have a peaceful and restful evening (and even some sleep, if possible). Prayers for that, as well as for those of us missing family or otherwise needing comfort tonight.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

 Evenin' folks!

Flo just a cup of decaf for me right now.

Thanks for all the condolences and wishes folks!  I appreciate them very much.  Just got off the phone with my SIL, Bernie's sister.  He has gone to direct cremation and there won't be any calling hours at a funeral home.  There will be a memorial service at a little church in the Bristol Hills where his family has been members for many years now in a few weeks.  THAT will give family from around the country time to plan and get here for it.  Family is spread out all over the place from California to Chicago, to Ohio, etc.  So I think the plan is a wise one.

Oh, Teen Steam guy.......  The cross is nicely placed on the top of the church steeple in the pic.....  I'm sure the Chapel Car has all the necessary items to be used for many different faiths as needed......... Wink  And Garry, thanks for sending it our way!

I plan to go out and w*rk at the museum for Diesel Days this weekend.  I'm thinking of making up a  "Reserved Sign" with Bernie's name on it to be placed on the conductors desk in one of the cabooses.  I will take a photo of it and send it to his daughter.  Ran the idea by my SIL and she thought it would be fitting since one of the things Bernie wanted to do this Summer was to ride the train at the museum.

OK, catch you all later!

Good evening Diners:  Ray, I'm sorry to hear about Bernie, and you know our thoughts and prayers are with youa nd the family.Angel

I really need some help with posting into the Forum. This is the fourth day I've tried to get a message to load (and my "news" is getting older and older! Sigh (BTW, who ever was wondering how to put in smilies, just click on the smilie face, which opens a menu>make your selection>Presto, it appears whereever you left the cursor) CapeJim: Your HMTL tip, unfortunatley isn't the answer.  You were joking with Chris about the "Toilet Rolls" I've had for silo stand-ins.   Well, they now look a bit less bathroom accessory, and a bit more - at anyrate to my mind- silo-ish.

I now have a whole bunch of questions about just what pipes and elevating machinery to put in to make the materials handling on these silos look plausible.

The 2 Right Hand Side silos are for grain. Grain cars discharge from their underside. How does the grain get to the top of those 2 silos?

The 2 Left Hand Side silos are for finished flour. How would they be filled from the mill?  How would covered hoppers be filled with flour?

The spur will be beneath a shed, so the actual loading detail won't show, but the conveyors/tubes/pipes - whatever surely would.

Galaxy: On Sunday you asked

HEY, any of you model an apple orchard???
...I will be planting when I've tracked down a set of about 20 convincing N Scale fruit trees that I can afford. They go in the field into which the John Deere is turning here

Keith: Thanks for all those brilliant photos of that mrr's layout. He's one awesome modeler! IIR I'll send one or two to the other "known" mrr in Sheet Harbour. He does very nice buildings, and I'm sure will appreciate those.

Garry: I'm wondering if Ulrich's Internet connection is still available to him. I'm also concerned about his absence, given his health.

Time to see if this will load in Preview. If it won't I think I'll just post it from "Compose" and hope for the best. E&OEMischief

Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of Healing, Comfort, Prosperity and Peace.Angel

RAY: Sorry to hear about Bernie, hopefully he's found his peace. Angel

Since the Chapel Car is out and about, I'd like to add Ross Butterbrodt to the list of people needing prayers and good wishes. Ross is one of our Assistant Chiefs, and has been given a "short, very short" prognosis as two rare forms of cancer attack him. I should add, he had some kind of cancer as a child and the radiation therapy from that left life-long effects...none good. He's had major back issues and a variety of recurring issues before this latest assault. He was a "guest" of Mayo...until they decided there was nothing more they could do for him. He doesn't qualify for hospice...because he has a feeding tube, his sole source of nutrition. Pull the tube, they'll take him. Pull the tube, he'll be dead in a matter of a day or two. For all his troubles, Ross has dedicated his adult life to the Clarence Volunteer Fire Dept. For all his troubles, he continued to serve the community.

DER JOHN: THAT mill is looking good!

der5997
The 2 Right Hand Side silos are for grain. Grain cars discharge from their underside. How does the grain get to the top of those 2 silos?

Here's how Quaker Oats does it in Cedar Rapids. The frame-only part of the structure, I think, is where they used to turn boxcars of corn, oats, etc., on their sides to dump 'em. I think it also had a "shaker" to actually rock the cars back and forth to move the product out of them.

der5997
The 2 Left Hand Side silos are for finished flour. How would they be filled from the mill?  How would covered hoppers be filled with flour?

From what little of their huge complex I've been able to see from public property, it looks like they get sugar, flour, and whatever other stuff, into any of a variety of sheds or other enclosed facilities. They even had a building with several tracks going into it where they loaded blue QOCX boxcars. THAT was converted to truck trailers only some years ago (after my era). I would guess you'd want a fairly "clean" place for loading-out a clean lading like flour...so I'd be putting a shed up for it. Some kind of dust collection system would probably be a "must-have" as well. I think Walthers sells some of the parts from their "flour mill" still...like blowers, ducts, and the cyclone vents.

There, my half-a-cent's worth of opinionated opinion!

A guy named Buddy Burton has some other pics of Quaker on his blog as well as from Cargill's soybean processing plant:

http://easterniarail.blogspot.com/

Buddy seems to get to places on the property I never dared to...Whistling  I've been trying to figure out Quaker's process...since 1987! I've got some of it...the above photo is the grain dump at "Elevator G," for example. But where they dump the sugar, flour, etc....not sure. Could be on "Mill 5, Mill 6, or even Mill 6-1/2.

When I build my version of Quaker, I might end up using some heavy duty cardboard tubes. I figure to cover 'em with a cloth medical tape. My thought process here is THAT once painted, the texture might look a little something kinda like concrete. Of course, at the time I thought of this, I was w**kin' at the home healthcare place. The tubes came from there (a variety of plastic bags came in rolls for covering cleaned/ready for use equipment), and I had an employee discount.

Not sure if this will help, but here's a shot of Cargill's wet corn milling plant:

Good morning all,

Ray, sorry to hear about the passing of your BIL.

Ran into a little problem last night on the railroad….. Friend brought over 2 Atlas locomotives with MRC dual mode sound decoders.  He is running the locomotives on a DC layout but wanted me to adjust the sound levels with my DCC layout. I placed the locomotives on the programming track and got a “good” message after I changed the diesel volume.  It’s still loud as heck; it doesn’t seem to have changed the volume at all.  What am I doing wrong?

 Good morning.

I'm debating to go get some shots/train video of the "street running" today.  The area where the trains run is about 30 minutes away.  I don't have to much planned today, and thought today would be a  good day.

I do need to start on the RBOX thou.  Maybe get it patched up, and start the process of weathering it.  I also ordered five cars yesterday to give me something to do over the next few weeks.

Jim.....The wife and I keep going back and forth.  Refinance now, or wait till next year (spring).  We will know more in a few weeks.  Also.........eBay has been doing real good for me.   I have a total of seven cars to do.  It cost me about $100 for the cars, and if they all sell for just $30, that will be a total of $210.  Not to bad.

Good morning. It's 77 and mostly cloudy. The high will be 92 and there's a 70% chance of thunderstorms. Heavy rain is expected.

I got some of the layout cleaned up yesterday. It's amazing how many little pieces plaster can break up into. The new straight track pieces came in late yesterday afternoon so I was busy for a couple of hours painting rails with the trusty paint brush. Today I'll be busy painting the rails on the curves. There's still a left hand turnout in the mail so I'm expecting that to come in sometime this week. I have to get the old track pieces into a bucket of water so I can get the glue and ballast off them. First though I have to find a bucket. My parents usually have tons of them laying around so here's hoping they haven't decided to throw them out.

Good Morning All,

Things are still crazy here in the shop as we get two dozen cars ready for back to back weekends. Monterey went well enough visiting with friends and helping with a car we ran earlier in the season.

Ray - Sorry to hear about your BIL. I think the reserved spot at the desk is a nice touch that would be appreciated.

Lee - I have had problems programing/altering MRC stuff unles I did it on the main. I got around the "move everything off the layout problem by hooking the "main" to a section of track (just like a programming track) isolated from the rest of the layout and having the feed only to the "main" section. I have found that even with a good signal, the power isn't enough on the programming track to do the job.

Jeff - That's some major demolition there. Can't wait to see what you've come up with for revisions (knowing that the finished product is often different from the plan).

Der - I concur with Chris. Clean milled flour would likely be bagged or put directly into a bulk hopper (probably these days one of the shaker types). I would think that milled flour would be impossible to dispense from a silo as tall as the ones you show not to mention problems with condensation and leachate from the concrete walls.

Gotta run - lots to do again today.   CUL, J.R.

*Door swings open, walks over to Jukebox and picks a tune*

"Morning folks, a song dedicated to all those born in a small town.. coffee please"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CVLVaBECuc  John Mellencamp  'Small Town'  of course a foot tapper.. lol.

Todd, I picked that one out for you.

Der John.. doggonit.. you are whizen away with your layout,  I am impressed at the pace you are going.

Jeff,  once again you amaze me with your ability to get things done, with passion.  You actualy make me wonder .. lol.. where do you get all this energy?  Sheeesh~

As for me,  well forget about the diorama's.. I've got to lay tons of cork.. then I'll hit all of you up for .. "Now what?~"

Ray, I am so sorry for your loss,  words can not express how I feel other than a prayer to ease the pain for you and your family.  It truly set me back a couple of days.  I feel sometimes, its a reminder how precious life is and who and what we spend our time with is so important.

I'm short for words now, if I forgot anyone.. any questions.. any compliments.. come back at me.. and remind me.

I just take it in small manageable steps and try not to do too much at one time.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have one of those Breakfast Bagels and cup of dark roast in a FGLK mug this morning.  I'll be in the front booth watching all the stuff going on outside today.

Currently 71°F here in the Finger Lakes under partly cloudy skies with a high this afternoon around 78°F.  My kind of day!  In case you are wondering.....  In Moosonee, Ontario, CA it is currently 15°C with a high of 18°C this afternoon.  Some showers are expected, eh!

Chris, I have added Ross to my prayer list.  Hope his end is peaceful.  Sounds like a fine gentleman who has had more than his share of trouble.

I have a dentist appt. for teeth cleaning first thing this afternoon.  The rest of the day is up for grabs.  May get down to church to re-hook up the old mixer board which has been repaired.  Have to mail a package to my sister the Rev. while I am out.

I have already gotten busy with the NMRA Fall meet for my division.  Hope to have a date spiked down soon.  Have one of our members already offering to open his excellent layout for the event.

Well, I best get moving.  Catch you all later!
