Good morning all,

Happy belated father’s day to all!

I had a bit of a disappointing day, no cards, no phone calls.  My Son sent me a TXT message (hearing impaired so he can’t call), however I thought I would get something a phone call or a card or something from Samantha, my daughter.  So I did a bunch of yard work this weekend since we didn’t get any storms Dorothy and I just chilled and played computer games (KoC on FB)  and watched movies on Saturday.

Jeff, I hope you have before pictures because I think the after pictures will be very impressive.

Cheese3, welcome to the dinner!

 Evenin' Folks!

Flo just a decaf please.  I'll be in the back booth relaxing.

What a day!  And a Happy father's day to all you Dad's out there!  I took off for the museum bright and early this morning.  Today was Railroad Day out there complete with diesel and caboose rides. We also had 4 or 5 demos going on at the museum of various railroading things.  All told I spent 7 hours w*rking on the train crew.  I learned how to uncouple cars and helped on one side of the caboose while another did the other side of the track on the engine it was coupled to.  Then after doing a brake test which failed, recoupled the gladhands so air wasn't leaking, we did another brake test which passed and headed off up the hill for our "test run".  About a half mile up the line, the brakes went into emergency and I noticed the other caboose was left about 20 feet down the track from us......  The car host on the other caboose had never set the hand brakes before and got a quick lesson from the conductor.  I immediately set the ones on my caboose.  Ended up with 3 of our mechanics coming up to check everything out.  Seems like the coupler wasn't completely set and locked together properly when set out at the end of running last Thursday.  By the time the mechanics arrived we already had her reconnected, checked and the air test complete.  We were however now seriously behind schedule, so we ran without the test run......  Learned some good things today about prototype operations!

We were packed with visitors for Father's day today.  Lots and lots of kids as well.  Had to 300 or more riders during the day.  My caboose alone had at least 5 runs with over 20 people in it.  We were running two cabooses and our 80 tonner.  Most runs had 5 or 6 people riding in the cab as well.  Got some great smiles from some of the "Honored Dads" when they found out they could get a cab ride.  Big, big grins!!!  All in all I stood up for close to 7 hours.  Took 20 minutes off for lunch and got to just sit and veg when we deadheaded back down after the last run.  My feet hurt......Whistling

The high point of the day was when a little girl (Of Indian ancestry - as in India) about 6 or 7 got off the caboose at Midway, went over to the tall grass on the side of the ROW and plucked a bunch of the flowers of the grass.  Came back over and gave it to me with a big grin.....!  Made my day as well as all the rest of the crew who thought it was very sweet.  I made sure I held on to it until she got the trolley and was underway.

As soon as got home I called my son to wish him a happy Fathers Day and got invited over for desert.  So I got a couple of cards and presents from my son and his wife and my 2 beautiful little Granddaughters.  Grandpa got to play with both granddaughters for an hour or so, had a great time, and is now officially exhausted for the day.  My son and DIL gave me a "Brotherhood of Railway Carmen of America" Button/tack (I assume it is either a cuff link or a lapel button) and a "Constitution and General Rules book of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen dated1931.  It appears to be in excellent condition!  Neat huh?

Hope every one of you had as good or even better Fathers Day!

Later!

Getting thunderstorms and rain here. Weather guesser says better than a 50% chance.

Whistling      Yes Jeff, The weather guessers are never better than 50%.

We have had much to much rain in this Province. There is about 60% of the land that will not get planted this year because of the rain.

On the eastern edge of Alberta the Trans-Canada Highway   (#1) is washed out.  Not just water over the road, but about 80 plus yards of the road is gone.  The towns of Irving and Walsh, Alberta have been evacuated.  Some areas are saying they had 13 inches of rain in seven hours,  This area is usually very desert like. Lots of sand hills and rattlesnakes. People are saying that they haven't seen anything like this in 75 years...  A dam south of Maple Creek, SK, has let go and there was over two feet of water everywhere in town, They evacuated the Hospital and they wer attempting to do the same with the Nursing Home, but the Ambulances couldn't get out of the yard there. However that turned out OK as the water didn't get to the home.  And there is more rain to come.  I hope the guessers are wrong this time.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY  to all you old Grunts, I hope you have a wonderful day with Family and friends.

I'm on my way out to have supper at my Son's.  So I'll drop back in later.

Johnboy out....................for now

from Saskatchewan, in the Great White North..

We have met the enemy,  and he is us............ (Pogo)

Wife likes the shed w/ kitties & the new circus cars. I need to find some black thread for one of the remaining kits, as there was none in the box.

 Good afternoon.

Went to work today, and came home to finish up one side of the garage.  I haven't done any MRR since last Thursday.  Hopefully Tuesday I can get some stuff done.

Hope everybody has a good evening.

Hi all! Well it seems like a few of us are making a return. Feels good to be back. I happened to go for a drive and found a hobby shop and picked up a signal tower kit and it sparked my flame again. Just an update on me i recently got engaged to the women of my dreams and thankfully she is very supportive of me getting back into the hobby. Hope to be around alot more.

Strong coffee in a  UNION PACIFIC  mug, please.

***Ulrich, I was wondering how difficult it would be to convert the rapido coupler (on the tender) to a knuckle coupler. If I owned one, I would not change the looks of it at all. It's very neat the way it is.

***T.S.Fan, saw it on the-bay recently, but did not buy it. It was selling for $250, and for that price, why not pick up a Proto 2-8-8-2 with DCC & sound! (haven't done that either) Also, I suspect that loco is older tech, although not certain.

***Keith, that's another reason for considering the switch from N to HO, modeling that dump truck scene.Laugh That's a must have, for sure. Although modern, been considering a Dash 8-32BH as a cheap alternative to that streamline steamer, painted entirely black of course.Dinner Laugh

See, I CAN justify having both steam & modern diesel after all. With such a crazy layout to begin with and it being mostly scenic, could simply run whichever roster I want on any given day.Whistling

Sat down to start on another circus car kit this morning and sliced deep into a finger with an x-acto knife. Should have figured it wasn't a good time to start after repeatedly dropping parts on the floor.Dunce Nothing a band aid can't take care of.

 Good Evening Folks,

only a short stop on the way to bed - my migraine is back. It´s probably a mental thing, but how do I find the rest I need, in times like this?

Zoe, a strong black coffee probably won´t do me any good, but I am having one, anyway. No? You mean - OK, make that a RBF for me, then.

Keith - lovely shots of a cute, but powerful dog!

Rob - keep the loco the way it is - it is a model of a Japanese pre-war streamlined Pacific, but I forgot which class. She is a beauty!

You all have a good one!

***Keith, that's a mighty fine looking circus car there. Have some others online we could view? Although I have a cheapo circus train for my N scale (which has never seen the rails), the wife's is HO. She is not particular on roads or anything else. Hers is a 100% "whatever she fancies" layout, which is fine with me. Heck, mine will be equally non-prototypical if not more so. After all, the main industry will be a Soylent Green Plant and volcano mineral collecting/processing operation.Whistling

Speaking of the Soylent Plant, found a pretty cool loco to use for transporting "stock" from the prisons and other institutions to said plant. Only thing is, it is pricey and has a rapido coupler. Wonder how difficult it would

be to convert?

Cheers! Rob

Rob,  lol.. what a good laugh I got from you and your idea of having a Soylent Green Plant.  OMG,  what a great idea and the train to boot.

For those of you who don't know the movie, well, its a Furturistic setting where society and progress are at a stand still.  No food .. no nothing.  The only food available is.. Soylent Green.  What most of society doesn't know,  Soylent Green is made from people!

Rob,... lol.. lovely idea.. I can imagine the Dump Trucks for Riot Control.. scooping up people and tossin em back into the truck.. lol.  Of course the movie I saw.. was like in the early 70's.. for all I know there was a 're-make'.. I know when I took my mom the DVD, she said to me.. "I saw the original .. in Black and White"

 oh?

Now as far as those pics of Circus Trains, well that will have to wait.  We're getting ready to go off camping today.  Yes its Father's Day,  9 AM to be exact and I'll be loading up the van as well as mowing the lawn this morning.  I even ask myself, now whats a good time to start mowing the lawn.  As you are laying there in bed .. sunday morning,  what time would you like to hear your neighbors lawn mower going?  I figured, I could start oh.. around 9:45 .. no sooner.

Rob.. Nice loco.. great for your theme.

Jeff,  I don't know if you would even want to hear this, but in short, Jeanne gave a me a helping hand on the van.  LOL,  yep.. charged up the battery and cleaned up the poles and terminals.  And as far as she is concerned.. I didn't tighten down the connectors to the battery poles tight enough and therefore it wasn't doing much.  The van started up.. real strong.  Now I suppose we're going to find out one way or the other.. but as far as she is concerned.. "We're not paying $400 bucks until we now for sure".. lol... woot.. I'll be looking for the heavy duty jumper cables after I get done here.

Ray, I want you to know, one of my pics I posted showed my soldering.. and I said to myself.. "Ah Gheez.. I hope Ray doesn't see that!" .. lol   Every time I solder I think of you .. I did improve on the soldering as I went, but I never went for looks as far as soldering.. I went for the good weld technique. As time went by, and me moving my soldered track around several times,  one soldering came apart, I actually had a 'cold soldering'.

I gotta go.. I'm still waking up.. sorry for the mis-spelling of everything.. just had to drop in ... before we take off.

I might post a few pics of that Dawg.  I just love dogs.  I know I have some here somewhere.

Good early afternoon all!!...Tall Pepsi in a frosted mug please. I am stuffed from the breakfast my wife and daughter made me this morning for Fathers Day. I then went a few houses down the street to my parents and had a SECOND breakfast...Dead..Good ole mom can make anyone eat. Anyways I got my Dad some DVDs on WWII. He is one of the original members of the 10th Mountain Division that fought in Italy. We got to talking about being in the military during holidays..( I am a Navy vet of Desert Storm). I started to think about all of the guys that are serving this very second...some probably involved in firefights as we speak. A lot of Dads wishing they could be back home today with their kids enjoying a cookout by the pool. So please...while we are celebrating today...just take a quick second and honor the guys protecting our freedom. I certainly will!!!

Good morning and Happy Fathers Day for those of you who are, and for those of you who aren't but do the job, but for someone not of your....um...well, you know what I mean.

Wow, that brake light switch must have been up and back against the knee bolster enough to give Jeffrey a real fight. Can't remember the last time he ordered something. Those vans give you a false sense of room don't they? Actually with the location of the engine, seat, and height off the ground, they can be a real pain in the back.

Garry- Yes, thank you. Anthony is doing great. He's home and back to his old self again.

Like G said, I've noticed a slow down in posts. I'm thinking I'll ignore the normal reasons, like weather, outdoor activities, you know all the things that occupy people more in the Spring Summer and Fall months, and start a MRR doomsday thread on declining posts and is it the sign that people are loosing interest in MRR and therefore the hobby is dying coupled with the fact that my MR mag was a day late last month so even Kalmbach is loosing interest. Maaaybe, we can discover exactly what is causing the decline in interest, what group of Modelers caused it and if we are lucky, exactly which modeler started it all and can blame him for the death of MRR and the oil spill. Then..... who knows what next.

Have a great day.

I've been out working on the van this morning. The brake lights now work. I had thought the brake light switch was bad but it turned out to be that the wires had been pulled off it. It was just a simple job (if you can call bending the arms at almost impossible angles simple) of pushing the wires back on their respective terminals. I tested the switch with the multi-meter first to be sure it was operating correctly. Couldn't find a thing wrong with it except that it wasn't snapped into it's rest properly. With one good push from both thumbs I heard it click into place. Once that was done the brake lights came on when the pedal was pushed and went off when it was released. Works for me. Now I'm probably gonna be busy for the next few hours untying the knots in my muscles. It was tight under that dashboard. I'll be in the back sipping on a tall ice-cold lemonade.

Sawyer, I got a chuckle out of your comment about that 'low' grade of 92. Laugh I would've loved getting that in high school (but then again, I was told back then - I think by a teacher or principal - that I was an 'underachiever' for whatever my standardized test scores *allegedly* told them. Yeah, motivation was my weak area back then. Whistling

I am pretty happy with that grade (yes Joe that class was TOUGH!), but I think I could've done better. if not for that dern 89 I made on the Final (I thought I had ACED it too!) I probably would have. but my mom had called the school a few weeks back to ask about the classes I had signed up for; she wound up finding out I'm #3 in my class.

Hi guys!

Maybe some of you know this, some of you dont but:

here's a trick that might be new to you'all who have cell phones and remote entry car key fobs!!! WE tried it  on our new Kia Sedona and I'll be giggered, it really works:

If you are out and have locked your keys in the remote entry car and have a cell phone on you, and someone else has a set of keys with a remote fob on them, call them on your cell phone and then hold the cell phone pointed at the door about a foot away while the other person with the key fob aims the fob at their phone and presses the unlock button, it will unlock the car for you!!! It works with land lines as I was out with the Sedona and my cell phone and my other half at the home landline phone to press and unlock the doors for me!!!

{This may sorta be the way the manufacturer can open car doors with the built in OnStar and such like systems?}

The only thing I can see not making it work is that cell phone to cell phone with bad connection, or bad cell to landline connection and obviously a dropped call. But you can always try again for a good connection.

Just thought you'd like to know!!!

Afternoon everyone!

Zoe I need and deserve a RBF!  I'll go sit in the front booth and watch all the goingd on outdise for a bit.

Just got home a while ago from Boy Scout Camp.  It was beaver day #2 at camp (Our w*rk days).  I occupied most of my time there trimming the grass around the tents in one of the sites.  Got about 2/3rds. of one campsite done....  Told the Ranger I will come back out a couple of days this week and keep at it for him.  My Black and Decker Battery trimmer is light and easy to use.  I can get in close to things where I couldn't with the old gas powered one.  Only trouble is a full battery charge only lasts about 15 minutes under really heavy conditions like this is, so with a few partial charges of the 3 batteries I have, I got the first latrine and 12 tent platforms done.  There are 20 tents in this site.  If I had been able to start with 4 fully charged batteries, I would have gotten the site done.  Just ordered another battery and a dual battery charger for it.  Now I will be able to charge all the batteries at once and should breeze through the sites.

Just as I got back to Geneva, a major storm passed through.  Rained so hard I almost had to pull off the road as I couldn't see a thing.  Now the temperature is in the 80's with 105% humidity out there.

Might just spend some time in the trainroom this evening........

Greetings and salutations...a bucket of lemonade please...

Trying to glue HO scale cats in Bubble's shed was crazy, even with a magnifier & tweezers. Kept going everywhere I didn't want them, including my own fingers.

I will NOT be trying any such thing in N scale.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwww ROB! Where's your sense of adventure, man?? I mean, how tough could it be to accurately place N-scale cats??? MischiefSmile,Wink, & GrinLaugh Heck, I'll betcha DER JOHN could do THAT in his sleep!Big Smile

Just had some fun... found one branch the wind broke last night. It overhangs the deck on the backside of the house. I noticed it was ON the deck, but still attached at the outer limit of my extension ladder. Between a dull saw, a Crap-man sawzall, and a dull hacksaw; it took me far longer to remove said branch than it took God to knock it down in the first place.

I mention God for taking the limb, due to a conversation last night with our ordained minister/firefighter. Upon looking at where the roof which blew off last night had landed, and what it could've/should've hit...I said "there might be a sermon in this for you."

He thought for a moment and said "yes...when God gets angry, he does some crazy s***." Shock

I am pleased to announce "significant completion" on THAT roundhouse project I started so many months ago. No...it isn't finished, but close enough I can call it "significant completion;" a term I learned from covering school board meetings of a district THAT built a new high school last year in addition to other construction projects.

Perhaps later, some pics.

For now...a bucket of cold lemonade in a seat by the air conditioner...

Good afternoon.   It does seem empty.

Well the wife and I have been working on the garage since 8:30am!!!  We are done for the day.  Knocked out all of the old wood panels, and replaced them.  Also put up some new "flashing".  Tomorrow I have to work so she will paint the one side.

 THAT"S pretty much my day.

Extra strong Italian roast coffee in a  STORMY SOUTHERN  mug, please.

***Todd, same thing here. Every time the phone rings, my wife expects it's the ALF wanting to send one of her parents to the hospital. They are worse than 3 legged dogs at this point and both DNR's. It will kinda be a blessing for those providing the brunt of their care (ie: my wife and one of her sisters) when they check out the final time.Mischief

Finished up Bubble's shed and that "Randy's Rascals World Renown Clowns" car. Trying to glue HO scale cats in Bubble's shed was crazy, even with a magnifier & tweezers. Kept going everywhere I didn't want them, including my own fingers.

I will NOT be trying any such thing in N scale. My (N) layout will be strictly a scenic (mountains & such) creation, devoid of any such no-see-ums. Still plan on some factory stuff, but even that will be greatly simplified. Or should I bail on N and jump into HO while I can still see anything!?!?!Sigh

Thunder boomers here. Cheers! Cowboy Rob
