Flea Day? If I see that on the calendar, I'll scratch it off.  Big Smile

Jeff... That cat pill joke is really funny.

Again, thanks for the commenst on the flood. water is down slightly (about 4") this morning. Much more driftwood, logs, debris, etc. came in last night. Rain is forecasted next few days. So far, the replica of Elvis's guitar that was lost in Nashville's flood has not arived on our shore.

Below, you can see my new Rapido GN heater car between the F3's and the RPO car.

Todd - I go for that one!

National Save the Flea Day! Splendid! Marvelous! We could even draft a a political program around this and start a thriving party!

Fleas of the world, unite!  Or did I get something wrong?

  • Flea Power! (Ginsberg)
  • I have a flea! (Martin L. King)
  • All wheels turn still at a flea´s will! (Karl (Charly) Marx - or was it Zeppo?)
  • Mr. Gorbachev, take back that flea! (R. Reagan)
  • All free fleas, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and, therefore, as a free flea, I take pride in the words "Ich bin ein flea" (John F.)
  • Flea or no flea (W. Shakespeare)
  • Wollt Ihr den totalen Flea (J. Goebbels)
  • A small step for me, but a big hop for a flea (Neil Alden Armstrong)
  • Fleas have come to America (B. Obama)

More? No!

Chris - yes, George was a heluva man. Rough character with a soft touch. He was certainly not everyone´s darling or Mr. Nice Guy, but a man of the sort that build a nation. A true man, with values we dearly miss nowadays, outspoken, frank. He had his second thoughts in accepting a German to his household after what he had been through. Those thoughts lasted only moments when we met. I was proud to be his "adopted" son during my stay. Both my family and his are now one family!

Garry - I just love this picture. Incredible! How you have blended in the back drop - just great!

I have laid out the roads for the NEW Gold Creek and discovered......., I want to add some to the benchwork for the top. I want to get rid of the future hillside and just make the top level to come out flush with the bottom. Wish I'd thought of that when constructing. Oh well a build up of foam should suffice.

Ulrich and Rob- I'm so sorry I neglected to mention your Mother and Mother in Law. Know they are in my prayers.

Coffee refill, please.

Other than some full scale farm chores and one last (I hope) HO scale pond pour, been relaxing to music. Much needed and something that should be a goal to do more often. Good for the soul.

Jeff, ROFLMAO! Just another reminder why we have 2 dogs and no  more cats. Dogs are easy, put pill in food (any food), pill all gone.

And isn't this flea dude a bass player for some band or other? why does he need saving? Is he in trouble or something?

Lime Rock went well. Friday the weather was perfect. Ended up driving a customers car we moved on and found it to be the worst handling car ever. It is now in the shop to get fixed so it won't scare the c..p out of you when you lift the throttle (jumps sideways then it does). Oh yeah and when I took it to the grid the clutch pedal fell to the floor so I had to start it in gear and then match revs to shift. Very entertaining. Customer cars ran well though. Saturday it rained all day but the guys went out and ran anyway. All had a good time and the cars all w..ked well. Lots of wind on the way home to the point where the Kenworth which is never bothered by such stuff was moving around. Wind continued today all day but no more rain. #1 son and I unloaded/reloaded the trailer we used for Lime Rock so we can head out for Elkhart Lake this week. We'll run at Road America and then back home and off to New Jersey the week after.

No train stuff again this week but I did order some Intermountain wheel sets and the 90ft turntable from Walthers along with the motor for same. The turntable was on backorder last time I looked but was in stock today as well as on sale. The design looks to be very close to the version we have in the rail yard at the museum and is spot on for length. Big difference is ours was built with cut stone walls not concrete but that should be easy enough to remedy.

I was out for a few days but I did want to comment on how well Sawyers pics came out when the camera was reset. I also take most of mine sans flash and like that much better. Also very much liked Barrys' pics  and agree with Ulrich on the blending of the backdrop and scene. Very nice indeed. I caught up pretty much on posts and will sit here and finish my RBF before I head off for some z's and another week starting tomorrow. dah dit dit dit  dah   dah dit dah  as they said in the old country.  J.R.

 Good Morning,

last night, I did catch some sleep - 4 hours. Not bad for a beginning.

We had an early morning visitor - one of the kind you don´t want to see in your house. I had forgotten to pay the last bill for trash collection for our house and this guy insisted on paying the bill. Well, I did, coming out of my MRR budget Sad It was not really much, but it pushes back my plans for some time SadSad

No news about my mother - I don´t know, whether this is good or bad. Called her Doc this morning, but he just told us to wait and see. She is to weak for any treatment - makes me fear for the worst to come. My father tries to keep his sanity by writing down the family history, starting all the way back in the 12th century, when a bloke settled down in Eastern Prussia and founded the village called Jebrammen, now Jebramki in Poland. The most interesting part starts in 1843, when the first member of the family joined the Royal Prussian East Railway. Since then, we had quite a number of railroad men in our family, the last one being my great uncle, who worked for the Shantung Railway Co. in Tsingtao/China, in 1900. When my father finished Law School, he applied for a job withn the then newly established German Federal Railway, but as he had already 5 mouths to feed, he could not wait for them to answer, but accepted the first job offered to him at the district attorney´s office in Duesseldorf. All of his work life, he regretted not to have worked for the railway.

Now I understand, where my love for trains comes from Smile

Zoe, I´d like to have coffee in my BR mug and a sweet roll, please. I stay here at the RC to watch, who will show up.

Talking of fleas - there must be more of them in the world than humans. I believe, that fleas actually control the world and that they have strongly influenced the course of history - see my statements. It is about time we honor them with a National Save the Flea Day Smile,Wink, & Grin Feel free or free flea?

Have a safe day!

Good morning all,

Well on the modeling front; I installed 38 4ft 6x6’s on the turntable bridge for the handrail system, 2x4’s will be installed hopefully tonight.  I was going to use 4x4’s but figured one derailment would wipe out the handrails.
I painted, decaled, and installed the body on the GE 44 Ton and GE 70 Ton switchers.  I test ran the 70 Ton Bachmann, giving them the benefit of the doubt as to the performance of their decoders and yep, they haven’t improved so I’ll be taking the unit apart and installing a SDN144PS in that locomotive as well.  Bachman is using the economy grade LENZ decoders with I swear a 3 step speed table; very jerky.  The 44T was the same way until I installed a new decoder and it ran fine.  On the 70 Ton I have a little more room for a larger speaker.  The 44 Ton sounds cool, but the small speaker makes it a really quiet locomotive.

The roundhouse is finally populated with locomotives: two 2-10-2, 2 Berkshire’s, 1 4-4-4-4, and an Y6.  The outside storage tracks have a few locomotives sitting around as well.

My great Uncle worked for NYC back in the day and I got “his” red kerosene lantern (Dietz Monarch) when he passed away 23 years ago.  I refinished it yesterday and hung it up with the NYC Lines and the NYC System oil cans I picked up last week.  The lantern was made for railroads from 1910-1940, I’m assuming it’s a late model but to find out the exact date range I have to measure the fill cap.  The only markings stamped on it are: Dietz Monarch and MOW (with illegible numbers after MOW). The only “local” RR that didn’t use them was the ERIE.  They had a special order DIETZ ERIE general purpose “blizzard” lantern. All this according to a Lantern Historical web site.

 Good morning.

Not much planned for me today.  Clean the house mainly, and do some yard work.   I haven't touched the layout in weeeeeeks.  I guess that's due to how nice its getting outside.

Hope everybody has a good day.

Barry, glad you kept the snow to yourself up there!  We had a heavy frost this morning, hopefully it wasn’t a killing frost.

Rob, my creek took me 10 pours, at about 1/8” each pour before I got the depth I wanted.  I couldn’t find HO scale fish to put in between pours, so maybe in the train expansion room I’ll do another waterway with fish and fisherman in it.

Ulrich, I didn’t like the EZ-Water, too hot for most of my scenery stuff.  I bought a two-part epoxy polyurethane that was self leveling.  One pour each night for about 10 days, right after the last pour I installed my fisherman in the boat and some ducks and geese.  I poured a thin coat of plaster in the bottom to seal everything, but I did have a small leak, but nothing major on the first pour.  Have you tried sweating out your cold?  I’ve done it several times with great success. Wear sweat pants and a sweat shirt to bed with the winter blankets, disgusting and uncomfortable; yes, but the results are well worth the hassle.

Good morning. It's 69 and mostly cloudy. It will remain as mostly cloudy as the high gets up to 85.

Nothing special going on today with the exception that I have to change the oil filter on the car. It's a dirty job but somebody has to do it! I don't know how I did it but I skinned one of the knuckles on my right hand yesterday. One of the hazards of having no feeling in the fingers.

Strong coffee in a  UNION PACIFIC  mug, please.

***Ulrich, did your family ever know the Klukowski's? My grandparents (Dad's side) emigrated to America from Poland.

***Lee, how thick would you say your creek ended up after that number of pours?

MIL seems to be recovering from the aspiration pneumonia. My wife finally came home today and is exhausted.

Finally sold an major original oil painting this year. (Prints sales do not amount to much) Was unexpected in this current economy.

Healing thoughts to those in need.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Got the cars oil filter changed out. Replaced it with a Fram ExtraGuard filter and topped up the oil with Pennzoil 10/30. Nothing but the best for the old beast.

Morning/afternoon all....

Sad day here yesterday, as my paternal grandmother passed away at age 84.  Vacation is now extended until funeral is completed, hopefully will be on Wednesday.  Thoughts and prayers appreciated....

Worked on the layout a bit, have switches for the load and hold yard and roll paper shipping laid, some of the yard is down as well.  Ordered sound decoders from Ulrich supply in CO, should be here tomorrow, will at least have something to work on when I go back on the road (decoders are LokSound, will go in an Athearn GP38 and a Walthers GP7, hopefully).  Sergent couplers should also be here by then as well.....

See everyone later.....

Jeff,  every morning I get up.. wondering what you'll post and do.  I follow your work.  Also, I'm glad to hear you're feeling better.  I must admit.. that thing about CATS.. was so funny to me.. I've never heard of that one.

Chris,  quote:  "I neglected to mention I got my butt chewed on for sending the moron for X-rays the first time. When our linguini spined doc sent him for the 2nd set...and it came back with a fracture, I was vindicated. I think THAT's part of why they canned me: I would err on the side of caution,... "

Thats exactly why.  I believe it.  And I know what you mean... its in the training.  Some schools stress it. I have felt I have always walked a very thin line.  Best example was one time.. I had to x ray a 3 year old 'Ankle' x ray.  I came out and told the parent.  "Listen.. the last thing I want is to have you go home.. and we didnt' find anything."  "The doctor ordered and ankle x ray but I'd like to open the 'collimators' and include  higher up on the leg just in case."

The parent agreed.. and I even stressed.. its like a freebie.. tibia included.   Well sure enough.. the tibia.. had a spiral fracture.. 2/3 rd's up.  And then ended up having to order tibia x-rays.

And of course the Radiologist wanted to know why. (almost duplicate x rays)  I said .. "It was my call... since I was the ER tech.. and I had guessed that a 3 year old... was only pointing to what leg hurt.. right verses left.. not that it was his ankle.  So much for medicine.

Robby.. I looked at your pics.. you're coming along very nice.  Last time .. I had seen a video of you doing landscaping.

Joe.. and others.. (Garry or Barry)( I get your names mixed up)  thanks for the compliments.   But right now.. I am in a "Void" mode.  I am trying to find respectable N scale traffic signal.. some light posts.. and the works.

Here's my list of street items.  I am not talking about road lines.. but road signs.

Things I think should be on streets.

1. Mailbox

2. Man holes.

3. gutter drains/vents

4  stop signs.

5. speed limit signs.

6. NO Parking signs.

7. telephone poles

8.street lights

9. traffic lights

10. Trolley poles.

I'm coming to a grinding halt.. until the things I've ordered come and a few more decisions.. as what to do.

Also.. THIS IS IMPORTANT.

If anyone has any ideas.. concerning lighting.. that is... I really don't want to go the route of electrical devices... but would rather keep it simple.

I am planning on going fiber optic for buildings.. and well.. street lights may not be an option.

I am looking for a simple wired setup.. that can run off 9 volt battery.  A simple flick of the switch and I have lighted street lights.

 1. Sounds pretty simple.. what do I need.?

  2. What should I be looking for.. as far a lighting.. 6 volt or 12 volt lighting?

  3.  Would an electronics store be able to set me up with a simple board with a  switch?

  4.  Is there some site I can go to read about a simple electrical setup?

  5.  And what would I look up.. in any thread as far as finding reading material?

Like I said I am coming to a grinding halt.  I'm sure someone is saying.. "Well Keith.. thats what you get for backward engineering".. lol.

Coffee refill, please.

***Randy, sorry for your loss.

***Keith, why did you have to go remind me of all those little "details" that will be required once my wife's town structures are in place!?! The work never ends, does it...Mischief Nice list by the way. Can't help you with the electrical but look forward to reading others suggestions.

Have been sitting on the back porch enjoying the show. The skidders are impressive enough, but the wheeled feller buncher is over the top. It takes out entire bundles of trees and places them perfectly to the ground, all while on a steep hillside. Would be a heck of a neat operation to model.

My mother was rushed to hospital, as her heart had just stopped beating. She is now in intensive care and the Doc has told me, if she will make it over the night, there is a chance of improvement. Petra and I will be driving up north in a few moments. My father needs us with him.

Randy - I am sorry to hear about your Grandmother. My Mom is just about the same age. My prayers for her!

After raising 3 kids.. my youngest a female.. and of course the older boys.. well there we're things I said.. that I'm sure all of them might repeat as they get older.

"I wouldn't be this way.. if I didn't care about you"

As for my two sons.. they know.. if Dad said.. "I'll take care of it"  They'd stop right there.. cuz they knew Dad would.

Now as for some of you~  I wouldn't have gone through all this if I didn't care about all of you.  Some of you mentioned 'colds' and some of you just had  to mention Fleas... in which took me over the top.  I hate colds and I hate fleas.  And I care.  Therefore~  here is my list of thing to buy.. pretty simple and not too expensive.

  POLISH CHILI VERDE

100_1230.jpg picture by Blazzin55

1 PORK SHOULDER.. a good 4 lbs.

1 bunch of Celantro aka Coriander in Europe

4-6 cloves of garlic

3-4 onions.  med>large size.

2 cans of Las Palmas  Green Enchilada sauce  28oz.

1 can of whole Green Chilis.

1 Crock Pot

Yes.. everything you'll need is in these two pics.

100_1231.jpg picture by Blazzin55

Oh..don't worry.. this is step by step. lol

100_1234.jpg picture by Blazzin55

Oh  This size of an onion.

Ok.. cut up the pork shoulder.. no problem with an electric knife.. and slightly frozen.  Cut pork half frozen makes it real easy, some parts .. well the fat can be pulled off with a fork.  Not kidding.. try it.

100_1238.jpg picture by Blazzin55

1.  Cut up your meat.. and throw it into the crockpot.

2.  Cut up / dice your garlic.. I am assuming you know how to cut garlic... (with rubber gloves)  Throw that into the crockpot and let the garlic absorb into the meat.

3.  Cut and dice the onions.  Now for me.. I only used 3 onions.. because.. they were fairly large... throw them into the crockpot.  Just let the meat absorb it all.. ususally done as you are cutting up all the other stuff.  And, I even have the setting on the crockpot.. on 'High' just so the heat.. starts working on the meat as well.

100_1243.jpg picture by Blazzin55

4.  Ok.. cut and dice the green chili.

100_1245.jpg picture by Blazzin55

In this pic.. I felt the need to show you.   The chili on the right.. has seeds.. wash them off.

On the left.. you see the inside of the chili.. with two veins running down.. that is the stem for the seeds grow on.

Remove that .. I do.. but not all of it.. but its important to know... that stem is the hotter part of chili.. the seeds the hottest.  Also keep in mind.. green chili is not hot.. some would argue.. its spicy.  In the mean time.. the meat is getting hotter and the garlic and onions.. are almost being steamed into the meat.  (cover of crockpot on)

The chili in the middle is fried green chili.. comes that way in the can.. fried green chili .. just slightly fried.. makes a different taste.. added taste.

Toss the cut and diced green chili into the crockpot to join all the other goodies.

100_1232.jpg picture by Blazzin55

5. Celantro/coriander.. cut up one bunch .. without the STEMS.  Twist off the bunch from the stems.. and then remove remainding stems as you cut up the coriander/celantro.  Toss the celantro into the crockpot.  And it all looks like this.. just right before I stir it all up.

100_1249.jpg picture by Blazzin55

6.  Add only 1 can of Green Enchilada sauce.  The other can of green enchilada sauce.. is added the next morning/afternoon... 30 mins before serving.

100_1251.jpg picture by Blazzin55

You do not  repeat.. NOT add any water.  NONE.  According the the maker of this soup.. he said.. "Juices of everything.. just melt and its a nice thick soup."  I really don't stir it up much.. I just spread the green enchilada sauce over the top of everthing..keeping the meat and garlic/onion.. steaming on the bottom.  I cook this over night.. I turn it down to low.. while I sleep.

Now the next morning.. something magical happens.. I can't explain it.. but you're almost there.. the onions should be almost invisable.. and paper thin.. no crunch.  Turn it on the High setting.. add the remaining can of Green Enchilada sauce.. 30 minutes later.. its served.

Now when I say something magical happens.. well.. I can't explain it other than.. you don't taste the onions.. or the garlic.. not like what you'd think.  For some reason.. the meat taking in the juices of the onions..and garlic.. or its the celantro and green chili's that takes away the strong scent of garlic and onions.  But you don't taste what you are thinking.  It tastes more like a green chili sauce that is the topping that goes onto another mexican dish.  But this is my friends dish.. who is Polish.

My friend is Polish... much older than myself.  I asked him one time where he learned to cook so good.  He just replied he was born after the war.. and his mother was jewish.. and his father Polish.. and said.. "Imagine that~"

The first time he brought this into work.. I cleaned the very bottom of the crockpot.. and added water.. my friend just kind of laughed.. I replied in so many words... "Are you kidding Ron?.. This stuff is the Elixir of LIfe!

I mean it too.. if just one of you tried this.. I mean it.. never a cold for almost a year.. never a flea bite.. or mosquito bit either.  You won't make any new friends.. but the ones you have .. will thank you forever on this recipe'  .. no one gets sick.  And if one of you are brave enough to try it.. sick or healthy.. you will never ever forget about this.. its just something you've got to try.

  "I wouldn't be this way.. if I didn't care about you~"

Randy ... I'm very sorry to learn about your grandmother.

Ulrich ... Praying your Mom will be OK.

Keith .... Wow! that sounds like a good recipe! Will the diner be serving it for dinner?

Good news from the TVA. ............... "May 10, 2010 - 12:15 p.m. CDT -  Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley are beginning to drop quickly and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. The lakes are going to drop an additional six inches today, then three feet over the next two days.  364.5 is the official projection for midnight Wednesday.  We are speculating that the lakes will be back to near normal levels in about a week."  .... Lake is down about 6" since its high of 359'

It's raining today but not storming.

 Good afternoon.

Went to a LHS for my next weathering project.  I got a "The Rock" 2-bay hopper.  I got it faded down, and the rust work will begin tomorrow.   I hope to get some pictires up tomorrow.

I also posted a couple of pictures.   One of my work bench (where the magic happens), and the other picture is what I use to move/fade my cars.  It turns so I can get a even coat.  I've had several people ask what I use, well here it is!!

 Keith.......Sounds good!!!

 Ulrich.....Hope everything works out Angel.

 Randy.....I'm also sorry.

Afternoon folks!

Didn't get a chance to get in earlier as I got a call from my son.  he told me he had a dentist appoinment in Geneva and my #1 granddaughter was hoping to come over to grandpa's house.  So I went into cleaning mode for about an hour and a half (the house was a complete pig sty with cat hair on everything) before they arrived.  Olivia and I had some fun with her Thomas the Train set.  She can now design the layout and can pretty much get it together as a workable layout by herself.  We played with Thomas for about a half hour.  We gave Thomas and Lady a drink of water every 2nd time around the track.  (They get thirsty going over the hill......)Big Smile  Then she decided she wanted a snack so grandpa got out some milk and brownies for her.  We then headed down cellar to check out the other trains.  She ran a coal drag by herself (with a bit of direction from Grandpa) and she learned how to change turnouts to make the trains go where she wanted.  At the end of the session I had her dispense the loco (I use Digitrax) and shut down the system.  Basically I showed her what buttons to push and she pushed them.  We had no more than gotten back upstairs, than her dad showed up.  He told her they had to go home, and she informed him she wanted to stay at "Papa's" house!  she is really good about not touching things on the layout  (I make sure there are somethings she can).  She will turn 3 next month.

Kieth, I will print out THAT recipe.  You said the photos had everything you needed to make the Chili, but you neglected to tell us when you add the Milk Bone.........?Whistling  And if we all make and eat this stuff, will we have to start a "Save the Mosquito" Day???  I mean think of all those poor little mosquitoes having to go hungry just because we ate that soup! Whistling

OK, I gotta go get some stuff done!

Later!

I am just back from hospital and at my father´s place. My Mom has not yet woken up, but the docs are now quite positive about her recovery.

I will try to catch some sleep now. Will take my father and my wife to my Mom early in the morning.

Yesterday, Todd said it was Save the Flea Day. Sigh

Today, Ray said it is Save the Mosquito Day. Confused

Don't bug me with stuff like that.

It violates a law, and I'll call the authorities, and they can dispatch a swat team.  Whistling

Ulrich, I hope your Mom is doing fine when you see her tomorrow.
