Bergie locking topic
Posted by philnrunt on Tuesday, June 1, 2004 2:52 PM
This is my first experience with a moderator coming on line.
Power, when used intelligently, is always impressive to watch, whether it's Bergie putting a lock on an unpleasant topic or 3 SD-70MACs (preferably BN in Exec scheme)powering up to move a hundred car coal train.

The locking feature is really cool. No matter how many times you click into the post or punch your screen with your fist, nothing happens. Yet, it dangles tantilizingly in front of you. Now that is just an incredibly amazing feat of power!

Bergie's mouse is definitely mightier than the sword.

The "Now I Know Where Everyone Gets Their Stars!" topic.
What was so bad about it that Bergie had to lock it?

Yeah guys, this doesn't happen often. The problem was that one member made a comment that came across as being too personal. It sort of comes down to combining names with complaints in public. The accused person then responds, and that's how trouble can start.

There are a number of ways to keep it from escalating, and maybe the best is to remove one party from the equation. In this case the victim graciously bowed out. That left only sending a message to the accuser to stop the behavior now and in the future. I honestly think we had reached that point before Bergie locked it.

I swear, I did not do anything to alert Bergie. He found it all by himself. Having thought this was resolved, and seeing no further posts, I had moved on. I was actually at the hobby store when he locked it. Ironic ain't it.[swg]

Elliot,

The animated smileys were still working when I checked (at least on the first page of the thread). I also was a little surprised to see the thread locked, because I thought it had already more or less died a natural death.

I guess my "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" post must have gone and pushed it over the edge. [;)][;)][;)]

I'm suprised Bergie didn't just delete it, I wouldn't want new members reading all that negativity. I have ran forums before, it's a tough job to keep on top of one, but I would still just delete the topic and pretend it never happened and hope that folks mend fences.

And now for more gratuitous animations [banghead][bow][(-D][sigh]

Don't worry DANO, as long as it is locked it can't come back to the front page. In my opinion that's actually better than not being able to be viewed. Being able to see it serves as a reminder of what not to do. In all honsty, there are times when you want to look back and see what was said. I have had this happen.

There is a dangerous topic hanging out over on CTT. It has been stumbled across, and brought back out. I know where and what it is, and if it never comes back I will be very happy. I really should ask Bregie to lock it while it's "sleeping" to permanently solve the problem.[swg]

Sorry guys, my mistake. I just looked and the smileys were alive and well, bowing ,grinning, sighing, laughing and banging their heads and fists as usual. [#oops]

I think he locked it instead of deleting so we could see his reasoning for locking it. If he would have deleted it a new post would probably have been posted explaining why he deleted it, which would have started another potentional negative thread. This way the people who have been a part of the thread see why and it effictivitly ends the thread.

Well, the right to express our opinion still rules, a not so anonymous person let the clutch out on the train sim forum, I'm amused on the "viewed" entries, seems others got a kick out of Kirsty's comments, I hated the fact of the particular forum chosen, I wish more participation in that particular part of the hobby of railfanning, and really, I expected to see that thread locked down(preferably deleted)! Anyway, I think reprimand in this case will not produce any favorable results, however difficult it is to run 'em away with kindness. Enjoy Being Kind! acj.

It was locked because the thread wasn't really condusive to model railroading and no good would have come from it if it had continued. The facts the were presented, people were exposed, feelings were hurt. The moderator is very approachable and as he said in the locked topic, no user has any more power than another. I wouldn't be surpised if other non model railroading topics get locked or deleted and I wouldn't be surprised if the all go away.

Hey Dave H,

What tool are you referring too; how is it underutilized, and how could it be better utilized? Please expound.

That would really turn you on, wouldn't it. It's a shame that you as a new poster here, can't just come onto the forum, join in with everyone else, and just simply enjoy the topics. Instead, YOU see fit to come on here with your high and mighty attitude, and stir up nothing but trouble. If you don't like what you see on this forum, then go some where else, no one is twisting your arm to stay here. [:(!][:(!][:(!]

That topic ("Now I Know Where People Get There Stars From") was the WORST topic I've seen since I started posting here, beats the UP topics. The funny thing is this part of trains.com is the forum where there aren't many off topic posts (check out the Trains Mag forums where almost everything is off topic).

I was mentioned a few times in ways I didn't like so the quicker that was out the better for me!

Hey emeraldisle,

Where does all of your anger come from? Please look at all the topics I reply to. I am not here to start trouble. I try to help others. I have never once posted to TCS or NES, which by the way, is where I see you spend a lot of your time - AND that is fine.

I am here to promote the hobby, help new comers and old timers alike, and I'll bet I 'll learn a thing or two at the same time.

Don't go away mad, just go away.

Morning Dougal;

How's your computer now-a-days, did you finally get rid of the dreaded SASSER?

As for the author of the above mentioned topic, he'll never be satisfied until he can dominate this forum and dictate what topics are placed here. Please, what ever you do, don't align your self with guy, he's nothing but trouble, with a capital "T".

Hey emeraldisle,

Ouch! Can't we just agree that some people like to live in the chat rooms of TCS and NES and others of us want the hobby to grow?

The __LAST__ thing I want to be in this forum (or any other) is a self-appointed moderater - as so many have become.

So why are you complaining so much about the NES, Stars, and Content on this forum. Read the Header, it says "General Discussion" and alot of people come here to have a little fun, talk about trains or anything else that happens to be on their mind, and touch base with everyone. I won't go away and neither will anyone else that doesn't subscribe to your rigid, narrow-minded, line of thinking. And BTW, I also want the hobby to grow, I've been in this hobby for over 50 years, but I also recognize the need for other topics to talk about and the need for ,even at our age, to have a little fun.

Hey emeraldisle ,

I am truly amazed on how we all read the same thing and get a totally different meaning out of it.

I never complained about the stars. Actually, I applaude those that have earned stars by posting relevent replies to help others. I made an observation based on fact (10 posts in a row with only 3 words per post). That is indesputible. Nothing more.

When I said you should go away, that was in the vernacular. I know there is no way of breaking the NES addiction. It is like crack and heroin.

Look at all the hurtful things you have said about me in the last few postings and look how I let them bounce off of me. I don't know where you get this idea that I have a "rigid, narrow-minded, line of thinking." Do you hate me so much just because I don't have enough stars yet to be considered on of the "in crowd"?
