HA!!! They'd look at that up here and just go on! Won't happen here!GrumpyLaugh

I'm thinking about the same thing Robby is. Extending the pennen... pin nen sul....penen.... three sided part, and re doing the wierd loop in the middle. That would get rid of the part I dislike the most and allow me to put more places in the part I want more in but have no room. I figure I can get it done without a duck under. I will need a lift out in front of the door, but I'd already planned for that. I hate getting MR mag when they show trackplans that will fit in my roomSigh

The peninsula that I have here was even divided so that I could extend the line AROUND the divider at the end of the peninsula. The divider goes down the middle and I then loop the backdrop around a stupid post that I have in the middle of that part. Sorta down one side, around the end, and end on the other as a terminus yard. And I get the mags when they show even better plans than the one I'm working on----Sigh

BTW--Todd: I like the way that trailer came out!Thumbs Up

We're getting a lovely bunch o' snow today---got another 6" down on top of the 16" we got last night and this morning---took an hour to get back home from basic survival stuff buying---only took about 10 minutes to do the buying ---mmmmWhistling And the temperature now is only -13C with windchill of -20C ----sheeeshDead

Oh well, going back out inna bit to clear the driveways again---neighbour is already getting his blower ready---catchya inna bit----Whistling

Hello Missy (pats the 'ol girl on the head)

Hey TODD: OK Pal, forget about how ya made the recliner...I'll take a "how-to" on how you made THAT green couch in the trailer. I'm liking the trailer. I'm just wondering what they burned to get the black soot on the skirt and door... singed shrubbery perhaps??? I can't say too much, I've never used the weathering powders, I'd probably get them everywhere but where I wanted 'em or would knock the whole thing over and have a big pile of...whatever you get when weathering powders combine into one pile.

Oakie Doakie on the lift-out...THAT sounds kinda familiar: pins for alignment. I was thinking something similar with cabinet door latches. Maybe I'm mixing up concepts. Its a long, long way off, so plenty of time to screw it up in my mind before I screw it up for real.

SAWYER: Man, I'm diggin' THAT furniture factory. Thumbs Up

ROBBY P: I'm adding you to the list of guys on here THAT are making me green with envy. Nice w**k there guy.

STILL haven't accomplished anything this afternoon other than losing many, many times at Free Cell. I don't think my computer likes me anymore...it usually lets me win one or two before it kicks my butt mercilessly. Today, it just started beating me like a rented mule.

Chris- Haven't got a plan drawn up on the liftout but I have an idea that I saw somewhere. Here I believe, but it could have been elsewhere on the MR site. Hm, maybe Lee. Don't remember who, but it involved two vertical alignment pegs at each end to align the liftout and a support block they drop into. I haven't got that part of the layout benchwork even started yet. It will pass in front of the door so it will be a necessity to even get in the room. I'll cross THAT bridge when I come to it. (pun intended)

OK, bad news. I found the camera and the battery was charged so unfortunately for you, I took some pictures. I give up on the thing taking decent close ups so I'll post them anyway and you can just ignore them if you choose.

I did some weathering on the skirting and I think I overdid it a bit. But, maybe when the ground is brought to the skirting it won't be as bad. I know the door needs some powder removed, but what about the skirting? Should I get rid of some filth or is it possibly a fare depiction of old skirting in a park that isn't the newest you'll find. I think it's a bit much. But when Brenda walked in the room she said "why are you taking pictures of old trailers?" I puffed out my chest and said That's my models. she said " oh. I couldn't figure out why you'd do that" I love that woman.

Ooops, MISSY! get out of here! What a ham.

Trying to get the hang of powders. A lot easier than paint for me though. Hats off to you Robby, you make it look so easyBow

Chris- Don't know if you can make out much of the interior or not, I haven't got the curtains hung so the roof is still loose.

I didn't even try to take a picture through the kitchen window with this camera. I found the insides of structures are a good place to use the people who are dressed in blatently '40's attire.

Someday I'll have a camera worth taking pictures with, but for now I'll try to keep them to a minimum.

I thought would take a few pictures of the layout progress.

I added some foam board to the middle section.   The middle section will probably have a smaller cement plant, maybe a warehouse of two, and I might add a diesel facility.

You can also tell where I need a couple of shop lights.  I was going to let the middle dry over night (caulking).

I also added a shot of the yard.  I will have to work on it more, now that I have a shop light over it.

Good Afternoon, Flo? Since Rerun and I won't be able to dine at Ray's tomorrow...Dinner maybe you oughta just set me up with a tripple cheeseburger basket and large Coke, also a stack of single cheeseburgers, plain, for Rerun. Oh....maybe toss him a bowl of ice cream too please 'n thank-you...

ULRICH: If you don't mind, tell me please, more about this "funny feeling" in your head. No, I'm not a doctor, I play one at times *ahem ahem, and I was called "doc" by Marine Corps vets...but the former paramedic in me is cogitating on this; trying to pin-down what could be going on inside THAT head of yours. Also, looking at your room plan, I'd shove the bed closer to the door, looks like you could get another 4' of layout THAT way...which I'm guessing, in N-sane scale would be a lot of real estate. Thanks for the kind words on my writing/story telling... Loving Wife and others have been at me for years to "write a book." 'Bout what? I really haven't lived what one would call a "remarkable life." I just, as the song says, "keep on rolling with the flow."

It has been suggested I oughta do a book of the photos I've shot over the years. What I've seen though, watching her trials, tribulations, etc. with getting a publisher to "bite;" I'd have as much if not better luck scratching lottery tickets. Disapprove

I hate getting MR mag when they show trackplans that will fit in my roomSigh

THAT's about the only time I get MR anymore!

THAT is what I shoulda been doing these bitterly cold, snowed-in days... Instead of staring at the 'pooter and playing a gazillion hands of solitare and free cell, I shoulda borrowed Loving Wife's light table thing, and gotten busy on the track plan! For now I'm going with the "National Docks Ry. Black Tom Terminal" from the Feb. '07 MR. It will be rotated to fit my RR room, with some stretching here and there, and some cutting there; to fit.

I figure it has enough of the "givens and druthers" to fit my alleged "needs." There is a small yard which will be used as the "City Yard" (holding/sorting for Quaker Oats), space for a scaled-down/greatly condensed yet still sizeable Quaker Oats plant, room for the ex-Rock Island roundhouse and shop building along with Feder and Sons junkyard; as background items, room for a small representation of the Chicago Central and Pacific yard, and what will become the Cargill corn milling plant. I think I can even scab-in a short siding for Jerabek Distributing (purveyor of "fine" beers such as Old Style, Grain Belt, Schlitz, PBR, etc.) and Loftus Distributing (lumber and drywall products).

Hey TODD, I'm gonna need a lift-out in the little hallway leading to the sub-attic. Could you maybe sometime post a pic or a sketch of what you came up with??? I've been looking at drop-downs, and swinging things for years now; but in reality, all I have room for/really need, is just to be able to lift-out the board with the track going from staging (in my office) to the layout in the RR room. I might only have to do this once/year tops...might not have to go in there for years (crossing fingers).

Or was you talkin' 'bout a lift-out you could stick yourself through to access parts of Toddland???

LEE: Radioactive hair color...who woulda thunk it? Laugh THAT must've been some scene, you calming a hysterical woman with glow-in-the-dark hair. My Dad still has a 1960s Civil Defense surplus geiger counter, and fires it up once in awhile for kicks 'n grins...so I've seen the natural radiation bombarding us. Two of the fire depts. I was on had some territory inside the 20 mile radius of the nuke plant, so once/year we'd get a radiation class. Time, Distance, and Shielding. Three principles I apply to dealing with my SIL...Whistling Seriously, I limit my time of exposure to her, I prefer as much distance between me and her as possible, and have no problem placing other family members between me and her (shielding).

GARRY: Nice w**k on the layout, great pics! I posted a little rambling to "bump" it back up top. As I said there, you kinda make me wish I'd gone with a CB&Q/BN branch in SW Iowa. I think I missed a lot of really neat stuff around there, and your rural scenes just further THAT notion.

I'll yield the floor, wolf-down this burger....good grief! Rerun has already eliminated his plate of burgers! Uh Flo? Maybe toss a few more his way, with a RBF????

Good Grief Charlie Brown...

Good afternoon to all, another 4" of snow has fallen with no let up until Monday. Der John must be getting hammered up there in Nova Scotia.  Helped the wife take down the Christmas decorations, after she helped me shovel the driveway and walkways. That is the secret behind a long happy marriage.LOL

ULRICH: I was faced with the same problem a few years ago when one of my grandsons received an HO train set for Christmas. He had no room in his bedroom. So what I did was to mount rollers under a 4x8 sheet of plywood, and we just stored the layout under his bed.

GARRY: There is nothing like a nice neat workshop, and all good model railroads should always strive to plan in advance for all unforseen occurances that might mess up the model railroad area. HOWEVER, when you are up to your a** in alligators, it is VERY difficult to remind yourself that your original objective was to drain the swamp. LOL

DUKE: LOOK!! Another Berkshire is coming on track 3!!! I think it is old #1225 !! Ohh geez, you spilled your coffee all over the table getting up so fast !!! hehehehehehehehee

RAY: Ok Ray, you can shut off the snow anytime now !!!

LEE: You should make a UTUBE video out of that job, what a riot !!!

Global Warming Update:  International Falls set an all time record cold last night, -35F  (-38C)!!!

Later guys

Well, just got back from doing some prep work at the restaurant for tonights doins. I have a vested interest as I will be one of the guests.Whistling

Ulrich- Yup, I'll have to agree. N scale could set you up quite nicely.

Jerry- I know what you mean. At Thanksgiving I just told the Grandkids the thing wasn't working. Didn't even open the door.

Rob- You take it easy. You get worn out quick in the cold.

Best take the chance to get back downstairs before getting cleaned up for the Holiday Party at 5.

Rob ... Your model of the hospital looks terrific !!!!!!

Ulrich .... Sorry to learn you are not sleeping well. Perhaps, it will improve if you use the bed in the diagram, and you have trains operating on a shelf layout above it. Confused

Thanks to those who visited my thread. I may add a little more.

Have extra farm chores to do today. When temps are cold like last night, I have to drag all the hoses up a hill so they will thaw & drain. Couldn't pump water last night because of ice. I do not like winter much.

Hope to make some train room time by this evening. Haven't been down there for too long.

Have a great day y'all.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have dark roast coffee with a side order of the Apple Pie a'la mode.  I'll go sit at the Rivet Counter for a bit.

Ulrich I think yu could have a really nice 'n' scale wall layout in the room.  You could do an "out and back", or "loop to loop" or a "roundy round" with room to spare.  Even get a good amount of industries and switching to keep you busy.  For now concentrate on getting yourself feeling better and stronger!  Hope 2010 is a great year for your recovery in every way possible!

My son and his family will be coming to dinner tomorrow so today is "CLEAN THE HOUSE DAY!"  Huh? what are we having?  Well so far it consists of Standing Rib Roast, Mashed Potatoes, Gravy, Winter Squash, Brocolli and Califlower mixed, washed down with a Bottle of Bubbly and something for dessert not decided yet.......

Barry glad to see you kept the "partly cloudy" over your way.  The NMRA divisions here in the Finger Lakes area are holding a joint meet a week from today and I'm hoping the fun and games of what you are doing today will not be our situation next weekend! Grumpy

Jeffrey and others..  The first computer I had in my classroom was the Apple IIe 128k model.  I was the envy of the faculty in the Middle School! Whistling  In fact there were definite words with a few teachers to the principle as they only had the 64k ones and could see no reason why a MUSIC TEACHER should get a better one than they had!!!  I actually ended up with it because I had written a program of study using the computer and printer for composing music in my classroom......  Sneaky way to get a computer in the room.  When I got my first Mac (it was a something or other II) I couldn't believe how much more I could do with it.  I remember buying a 5 1/2 inch floppy reader so I could transfer files from the IIe at school.  A month later we all got the "something or other" III which ran at 100Mhz (up from the 80Mhz mine was doing)...  Had a larger HD too.  Those were the days......Whistling

CN Charlie, My thoughts and prayers for you and the family as you have to make that final good decision for Pippa.  That is always one of the hardest decisions we are called to make for our pets!

Best get moving or I'll be up all night cleaning the house!

Good morning.  Its a cold morning.  Its currently 14deg, and the wind chill is 4deg.   Calling for snow all weekend, and most of next week.

Got off of work and made a trip to Lowes for some wood, and foam board.  I going to start on the middle part of the layout.   Nothing really planned out it but I will have a plan.......hopefully.

Other than that, hope to stay warm.

Good morning diners.  I'll have coffee, sausage, eggs, and one of those apple cinnamon scones, please.

Ulrich, It does look like a good space of a shelf layout.  Good time to take out the sketch pad and start drawing ideas.  Hang in there and keep up the positive thinking.

Jeff,  Snow there?  I know it's a real problem there.  Your not equipped for it.

We have a beautiful morning with sunny clear skies.  Of course when  I got up the temp was -22 F. (-30 C).  Not much wind but at that temp it doesn't take much.   As the layout is in the garage (no heat) I won't be doing any work on it today.  Seems like the wood glue freezes faster than it sets.  Also the modeller freezes way to fast.  When we get the Christmas stuff put away I can set up the craft table and work on models, and rolling stock.

Prayers for strength and healing for those in need, and that we all have a better year than the last one.

Jim

 Good Afternoon,

it has been a dull, but quiet day so far. I used the time for some daydreaming about a layout that I may be able to build once the financial situation improves. I made a rough sketch of the room available, which puts a lot of limitations to those dreams.

The long wall is 19´ long!

The only viable option I see is a shelf layout in N scale. The bed does not disturb much, it is one of those inflatable things that you always see advertised on TV. The layout must be above that. I will develop some ideas for that, which I will share with you.

Zoe, just some coffee and a blueberry muffin slice of that apple pie, topped with vanilla ice cream, please.

Will drop in later again.

People think when you are retired you have nothing to do and you should help them with their stuff.

I can't imagine where they might get that idea.

Good morning. It's 30 and partly cloudy. The high will be in the low 50's and there's a chance of a bit of snow and rain this morning.

Looks like we may be in for a bit of the white stuff falling from the sky this morning. Sure hope that goes somewhere else real quick! We don't need snow here. Oh sure the kids would love it, especially if it gets them out of school for a bit, but what about those of up who have to drive on it. I'll have to leave my nephew off that list. He'll just get his little redneck hunting buggy out and go spin donuts with the emergency brake locked. One of the items on my personal projects list is to get a USB IDE hard drive enclosure to put my data drive in. Wal-Mart doesn't carry such an item and the computer shop is out of them at this time. I may just have to wait until they order more. The IDE ones sell out fast. Right now I'm using the data drive with a USB to IDE cable kit but there's no enclosure to put it in.

Good morning.

Well, I've seen convesations in this idner on many topics, but this is the first time I can recall anyone talking about radioactive red hair.  Laugh  Hey guys, would you consider working on your layouts?  Smile,Wink, & Grin

Some of you commented on my thread with some 2009 pix of my layout. Here's the link: http://cs.trains.com/trccs/forums/t/166085.aspx for those who did not see it. It's moving down the line, and will soon be on page three if not "bumped" to the top.

Duke ... I try to keep the work area tidy because it is more efficient that way. However, at the moment it is not that neat. The long cabinet on the left now has the first of two shelves above it. It is my freight yard under construction which connects to the main layout. Next I will build the passenger terminal above it which is to connect with the main layout as it passes through my long-planned city of Heartland.

I am already aware on some non-model-railroad interruptions in 2010 which will interrupt layout progress. People think when you are retired you have nothing to do and you should help them with their stuff. Sigh

But I have a bigger problem than calming a woman with radioactive red hair. I'm thinking...... trackplan change. Again. I need a beer. No, it's too early for that. Somebody talk me out of it. No wait, you've seen the track plan. No one would do that. I knew this would happen when I discovered I didn't like the other one a whole lot. Well really don't like it at all.

you would be surprised at what “glows”.  Salt and smoke detectors would set my equipment off (I had a tricorder looking thing that would pick up a very small amount of radiation).  If people walked past me that recently had an MRI with dye could set my equipment off within 72 hours of having the procedure.  Once the crews passive detectors went off, I came in and tracked it down to a woman; her red hair coloring tested positive for americium. It’s a talent to calm a woman down after she learns her hair coloring was radioactive.   Even parking lots could set my equipment off, I was trying to calibrate my machine before boarding a cargo vessel and I was getting strong hits for radon.  My job was to search, locate, and identify weapon grade radiation.  So I would always set my equipment at the most sensitive level at the highest sampling rate.  You can tell instantly who your real friends are at work when you stop and start adjusting the sampling rate or start walking in circles with your equipment.

Good morning all,

Track power: I ran a feeder to the rails every 3 feet when I laid my track, I didn’t want to be bothered with the low voltage issues that seem to plaque my previous layouts.

Jeff, you just caused me to have a flash back, my first computer was a Commodore 64 in High School, but I was well equipped with a 5.25” floppy drive.  Most of my friends had the cassette tape player.  I had a modem and a phone book of all the BBS services in the country.  Then I moved up to an IBM with two floppy drives!  Typically games came on cartage or you bought the code in a magazine and copied it onto a hard drive by re-typing the code.  In the early 90’s I bought an i486 with 2MB RAM, this was far superior to my friends i386 since it came with the math co-processor already installed in the CPU.  My fondest memory is buying a 750 MB hard drive and thinking to myself: “how will I ever fill this up, it has enough space to last me forever”. Ah ignorance was bliss for about 12 months.  That i486; I bought 4 MB RAM for $250 back in the day and thought I was getting a bargain.  And you are right about the old pins vs. the new pins.  In the late 90’s I was using SCSI for everything and they were a pain to trouble shoot.

Rob, Great job on those lights, now you just need a proper helicopter with spinning blades.

Vincent, good for you! More people need to stand up to “those” types!

Ray, thoughts and prayers for your family and your BIL.

***** comes in with big clunky snowshoes--unties snowshoes and bangs them against the building to release all the snow BEFORE he comes into diner----mutters to self--"sheeesh--enough snow out there"--*****

Good Morning

Got about 16" of snow last night from a few hours of snowsquall activity. Neighbour and I went out to play with new snowblowers and got a couple of our more elderly neighbour's driveways cleared out this morning. Weatherbeguessers are calling for upwards of 12-16" more today/tonight so we'll be out with the blowers again todayWhistling

In the meantime I'm going to attempt getting some MRR'ing time sometime today--Whistling

That is AFTER I go get some survival groceries----Sigh

Chloe, I'll have a coffee this morning please----I'll be at the fireplace getting warm

Good morning. (yaaawn) Coffee please. And a bowl of Cap'n Crunch thank you.

Dog got me up at 4:30 to potty. Now I'm awake. I figured I'd see what was going on here.

Garry- Like the 2009 recap photos!

Rob- the Hospital looks great!

Ray- I'm sorry to hear about your BIL. He certainly will be in my prayers.

CNCharlie- Same for little Pippa

Philip- What did you have? Flu? I'll add you to the list of get well prayers.

Vincent- I wasn't referring to rubber. Unless you have real soft tires or you just sat there and melted the tire in a huge smoke show to where the tire was actually coming apart, I doubt you were flinging rubber anyway. I was referring to the other "stuff" that is on the road surface, like Penguins or small Sea Urchins. But mainly gravel. See with my luck, my tires would have picked up this pile of rocks and machine gunned the first three cars, breaking windows and peppering the paint.

Ulrich- Do they have any people who could talk to you about your situation?  There is light at the end of this tunnel wherever it ends. But there is light and you can make it.

Main project today is to get to the basement. I think I over did the weathering a bit on the skirting of the trailer. I'll see what you guys think. Maybe do a bit of work to the empire. Then unload the grocery truck, bake a pan of bread, come home hopefully hit the basement again, the go to the Holiday party for the Farmer who also owns the trucks that haul grain for the elevator. But first........, I have to find the camera again.

Have a Great Day!!!

 Good Morning Folks,

I am glad the night´s over! Could not sleep at all - the third night in a row. Now I am totally exhausted and even more "funny" in my head. I can´t really describe this feeling, but with all this computer talk recently in this thread, the best explanation would be that I have a relay in my head not "clicking" properly. Sorry guys, my brain is still analogue... Big Smile

Janie, please, coffee and a buttered toast for me - I´ll stay here at the RC.

Vincent - sorry to hear about the loss of your job. As you have already received a boxcar load of good advice, I won´t chime in. Just keep my fingers crossed that you will find a job with a team which is more to your liking!

CNCharlie -  I can feel your pain, a pet is always a family member, and the prospect of losing it hurts very much.

Ray - my prayers for your BIL Angel

John - do I detect a Fleischmann Class 50 steamer with a string of German passenger coaches on the right side of your Campbell River layout picture?

Rob - your hospital is a fair representation of the building I have to go to on Monday again - seems, as if all  smaller hospitals always look alike -Big Smile

Chris - you have such a nice way of telling things, why don´t you start working on a book? All you have to invest is time...

Although daylight is breaking over here, I will go back to bed  - maybe I can catch some Zzz

Have a good one!

Der  Do you think Ryan would have posted the meal at the time because he goes back to the "Old Coffee Shop" as some of us do. I don’t remember a Dave, but as soon as someone from back then says his name you know you will remember it then.

Garry  Saw your thread out in the main room and the only thing I could see that should change is your work area. It is far too neat and everything is put away. What fun is it if you can find all of your tools when you need them instead of going on a scavenger hunt.Big SmileWhistling

Best to all on sick call and those recovering AngelAngelAngel

Talk to you later

Good evening and Happy New Year to all!!

Snowing here again, that big storm is really gaining strength in the Gulf of Maine and is going to retrograde SW back towards us, so I dont think anyone really knows how much snow we are going to get. It is supposed to snow from now until Sunday night.

I finally got to finish the 150 Micro Engineering bridge, now I can start laying track at the proper elevations.

CN CHARLIE: Sorry to hear about Pipa, pets are family members and their loss is tough to deal with.

Prayers to all you are in need, may 2010 bring them healing and strength.

JIM: Every now and then, have Cloe yell out , " Look !!! A Berkshire is coming down the track" Then stand back away from Dukes table.

Hey, what gives with this forum software !! Every time I use an apostrophe like after don t, it doesnt accept it and the cursor jumps to the bottom of the screen page???? I am using Firefox.

Later guys,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !!
