Evening, Janie, I'll just have a cup of cocoa to go, please. Thanks!

Gee, you all have been bizzzzy last coupl'a days! Won't begin to respond like I should (don't want to take up a whole page by myselfOops), just the Reader's Digest Condensed Post...

Calif.Tom, your mighty (furry) Norse warrior was intimidated by that itsy-bitsy, tree-toppling storm? Wink

Chris, best wishes on the layout progress, and on staying under THAT editor's radar until her mood improves. And I agree, you should ask the bird lady about those sparrows and hawks...Whistling

Sawyer's doing fine on the field, it sounds like. Thumbs Up

PC, are you playing guitar, or what instrument for the church band/team?

DerJohn, no problem on your post - I found it amazing and interesting!Thumbs Up

Jerry, like your idea of the tribute pond, too. You could put a backhoe by the pond hole for now, until you get ready to pour. Yeah!!

Jeff, I dunno about a sink hole, myself. But I tend to avoid really scary or 'downer' stuff for my layout.

Barry, remind me - what class is that that you're teaching?

And Ray, are you using rechargeable AA's in your camera, or does it come with some built-in battery that takes beaucoups of photos? Liked your photos of the layouts at the museum and all, but I really like your Scout camp photo - that one's going onto my 'puter's desktop!

Sue, maybe you could post some nice photos from your layout, too? Wink

Attaboy, good to hear from you again, even if it wasn't on your best day. Didja figure out if the car brake gave out, or why it took off downhill?

Ulrich, as the man (Chris?) said, put that German stubborn to work for you, and plow through the paperw**k. You'll get past this too,AngelAngel I'm sure. I'm wondering if in Germany, they must not have an abundance of apartments (flats) like we do here around town. They sure seem awfully picky!Confused

I'm sure I've missed half or more of the posts, so my apologies. On-call duty had me out till midnight Friday, but I was able to get more track (re-)laid for the layout today. Also dug through my MRR tubs and located a detail item I was looking for (Rix turnout switch stands), as well as finding that I may need a bigger layout to make use of all the detail stuff I have. Let's see, maybe if I get a four-bedroom apartment and persuade the new landlord to let me open up the walls between most of them....Pirate

Well, time for me to head for the pillow and catch up on my Zzz's...

Blesssings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Evening all from Soggy/Humid/Yuk! California:

Remnants of the typhoon still hanging around in the air--partly cloudy and HUMID!   Unfortunately, the temperature has taken a big rise back into the mid-eighties with what feels like about 95% humidity.  Played Vespers this evening, and the church was so humid that my violinist's instrument went out of tune within five minutes.  He spent the entire evening re-tuning, I spent the entire evening watching my fingers slide around the keys--not a fun time.

We got it all explained by the WeatherPeople out here.  Seems that once in a lifetime, California gets hit with a hurricane.  What happens, is that an upper-level trough develops in the Far East and sucks whatever typhoon is roaming around there into a funnel that heads straight for our Coast.  We had one in the 1970's that caused major flooding around here, but evidently the worst one was in 1861-62, where 45 days of rain flooded the entire Central Valley and almost caused Sacramento to be abandoned.  In fact, the State Capitol had to be moved to San Francisco for about four months until Sacramento dried out.

This one was 'minor', according to the Weather People.  Sacramento only got 4 inches of rain in less than 24 hours, and Big Sur and the Coast only got a total of 21 inches.  Small potatoes, historically.  Wow, if this one was 'minor', I'd sure hate to be caught in a 'major' one.  30 hours without power.

And if you want to hear me REALLY "Kvetch", when the storm blew out my satellite reciever, it also wiped out about two years of really NEAT movies that I'd been collecting that aren't commercially available.

Yah, I know, "Poor Me."  Well, one of the movies was the very nifty railroad western A TICKET TO TOMAHAWK, featuring a beautiful little Rio Grande Southern 4-6-0.  The movie isn't available on DVD, so I'm going to have to hope that it gets shown on TV again sometime before I die.

(Mutter, Mutter! Sigh)

Anyway, we're supposed to get back to Abnormal within the next several days.  And I'll quit "Kvetching."

Der:  Love those stories about Columbus Day.   Of course, out here if we DIDN'T celebrate it, San Francisco would secede from the Union, LOL!  And for some strange reason, it's celebrated in our Catholic School system at least here in our Diocese.   But I love those stories about the Phoneicans, Romans, Vikings and such.  Hey, if one of those Viking "Skogkatts" hadn't jumped ship in Nova Scotia, we might not have had Maine Coons, for cryin' out loud--and what would I do without Spooky?   And Uff-Dah wouldn't have had an American Cousin to constantly bug.  Besides, also, the Phonecians went EVERYWHERE!   Why not North America?  Heck, according to the history of Cornwall, that's why they don't consider themselves English,  they were settled by Phonecian pirates.  Fine by me, I'm part Cornish, anyway.  Tongue    I look at it this way--the North Atlantic couldn't have been THAT difficult to cross--you've got all of those land masses between Scandanavia and Nova Scotia, anyway.  Just skirt the icebergs, LOL!

I mean--COLUMBUS?  What did he do when he got back to Spain, anyway?  "Hey, Isabella, I brought back a new dance with me.  It's called the "Cha-Cha."

Hm.  Never even got far enough south to discover the Tango.

Well, that's about it.  Heading out to the garage tomorrow and run the track-cleaning train.  Humidity, you know.  I hope the scenery isn't too soggy, LOL!

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Chamomile tea, please.

***Ray, can I catch a ride on that train as far as the swimming hole and get off there?CoolThumbs Up

***Tom, now you have me curious about that movie: "A TICKET TO TOMAHAWK". Wonder if there is a website online where you can watch it? Sorry you lost it (and the rest) to the storm.

Good night all.

Whistling

Good evening Crew,

Hi Girls, I'll just have two oatmeal raisen cookies and a Hot Chocolate before bed tonight.

It was a beautiful day here today. The first time we have seen the sun in 16 days. and the first time there was any warmth in the air for a month.

Here is just an interesting little story for you folks to chew on.

I have called my railroad (in many different forms over the years)  the "Last Mountain & Eastern"    56 years to be exact.

Well remember those two U-boats that I said had come by my back fence here about six weeks ago.  At that time they were in solid black livery with only white handrails.  There was no name or numbers.  Didn't know where they came from or went back to about an hour later.  This is on a CN line that hasn't been used for anything but storage for four years.

Well this morning in the paper ( Regina Leader-Post.)   There is a big picture of them and now they are now lettered.  "LMR" on the sides  and up ahead of the grills in smaller letters it says"Last Mountain Railroad"  This is a new shortline that will haul grain and potash on some CN rails that they have purchased and leased another 27 miles to get into the city here.  How about that.??   You see sometimes the prototype follows the Model.

Not a big deal, but after all this time I found it quite interesting.

Hope you all have a good sleep and a peaceful and relaxing Sunday.

Go to Church if you can.

Night all.

... while the rest of the world is Zzz, it must be me to open up the Diner for today - just for reasons of geography (hehe, I am doing my best to change that... Wink)

Good Morning everyone,

Flo, I´ll have the breakfast special # 2, with all the works and coffee, blond and sweet, in my LKAB mug, please ´n thanks.

After the WET and stormy days, we now enjoy a crisp and clear autumn day again. It is quite frosty, though, and some areas here in northern Germany have already seen some of that white stuff we don´t want to mention in here.

Petra and I are checking our gear to decide what we can take along, what can be sold or just left behind. It is always amazing to find out how much useless stuff of no value at all accumulates over the years and how little valuables  there are. Interesting also to find out that the stereo I bought only yesterday is already 20 years old...

Well I found an old Marklin track plan book from the late 1960´s that showed the plan for my first layout I built as an 11-year old.

It was built with the typical Marklin HO tin-plate track on a table roughly 4 by 8 ft. For scenery I had glued one of those green mats made of colored saw dust on paper to the plywood base. The track was then screwed to the plywood and the trains made a terrific noise, despite the rubber buffers I place underneath each piece of track.  Certainly crude when viewed from today's means and methods, but it was fun to build, fun to run (even operate) and it was MINE! I wish I still had it, but I sold it off when I was 16-17, just before I left Germany and headed towards Washington State. Never cry over spilled milk ---- Sigh

Tomorrow I will have to go to get tied up with the red tape again - I need to get welfare approval to rent the flat, although it cost less than the allowance granted, but is is slightly bigger. I then need to go to the county council to get the approval for renting a publicly funded flat. That will take me a day and some 100 miles of driving... Sad

Petra has made some  "Apfelkuchen" for the "chowhounds" in here to enjoy ...

You all have a good day!

Mornin' everybody!

Just a quick cup of Joe, Flo....  Oh and maybe a slice of that "whatchamacllit" that Ulrich brought in.

Only have a minute as I have to get to church.  Today is Kabob Lunch Sunday and I am in charge of the salt potatoes.  Probably around 80 lbs. of 'em.

Jim the battery is one made for the Canon Digital Rebel.  I believe it is a Lithium Ion type and can take several hundred photos on one charge.  I'm using a 2 gig card that can hold 350 or so photos, so I'm usually good for the day.....

Tom sounds like another nice day in SoCal....Whistling  Sorry you lost the videos, but hopefully you'll find it on the tube sometime and rerecord them.

I better get moving....

Good morning..Its cloudy and 45 here..I'll have coffee and a sweet roll please..Thank You...I am still trying to get over the news that Blue Boxes are history!..My first model railroad purchase 40 plus years ago was a SP 40 foot box for 1.79 at McMillians sports in Terre Haute that along with a .25 cent piece of atlas track pretty much busted our newly Wed budget...I put it together and put it on the track on top of our first TV...couple of weeks latter a PFE reefer and anothe section of track doubled my empire..I went on to have at least 50 BB engines and maybe 150 of their cars..I ran those engines alot and only remeber burning out 1 engine!..So long my Friend!!...

My brother is coming this afternoon and He is going to replace the tie rods on my van, latter the rear brakes that should put it back on road..

Good morning. A piece of Petra's strudel and a cup of coffee please. Didn't make it back in yesterday. Went to the show for about and hour, drove back, dropped Brenda off so she could get the company car and get to work, followed her there, cu-leeeeeeear on the other side of town mind you, so we could have a lunch of chopped steak, roll , small salad and potatoes for lunch. (Angus burger combo from McDonalds) Then decide I would go back, at her suggestion, so I could look longer I did and that's when I bought the stuff. Got a call from Brenda asking me to go to Sam's club for some cracker snack things for the elevator since I was in the area, not really, but to a woman I guess I was, then back to elevator, stopped at the restaurant and they were busy so I helped there a bit, then home for supper and after giving the worlds best dog some attention, it was bed time. Whew.

Well the train show was a train show I guess. Not much in the way of bargains at least for me. I did pick up a couple of vehicles, a fire/EMS truck for the station , a beverage trailer and a beverage truck for the distributor, and a cattle trailer for the meat plant. Oh and a puzzle for Brenda. Like I said most was marked with a generous price except for one guy, unfortunately he didn't have anything I needed. Even the boxes of cars, you know the ones that are just boxlids with old cars just piled in them, were going for good money. One guy was wanting $12 to $20 for his. The only things I saw that I was looking for, was the little 40 ft passenger cars. The one guy had a passenger coach and a baggage combine by Roundhouse for $19 each. Assembled with knuckle couplers. He had 2 each. I talked myself out of them. Also, to my surprise there were a few T&P cars at this other stand. Some 8,000 gallon tankers and some wooden gons. The gondolas were pushing it a bit for even me, but the tankers would be ok. Not for $37 though. They had them marked as "custom painted" but they looked like they got data only cars and put the Texas and Pacific decal on them. There were a few good deals on some locos. Almost picked up a switcher for $15 used. New stuff was priced average for around here and some of the new old stock was priced somewhat reasonable. I need to do some checking on these little passenger cars I need for my tourist run. See what I'm looking at as far as availability and price. If it's something I can get from my LHS then I would just as soon give them the business than pay someone else the same. Used stuff, that's what I go to train shows to look at mainly, or old stuff not available anymore. I have one more chance today to go back and try and get them. Before I worsh (wash) the back of my hand good enough to erase the stamp.

I haven't read to get caught up yet so my apologies if I have left something out. My internet connection is not happening. The modem has been searching for a connection this whole time. Opened to my homepage this morning abou 7 and clicked to come here and........... So I just talked to keep myself busy while I waited and now I've talked so much I'll have to post a catch up post later. If there is one. Of course if there isn't, you wouldn't know. They want me to change to phone service with them. I hope it doesn't drop like the internet. I'll ask that first. Do you think they'd say "yes, you won't have a phone at any given time everyday or so for who knows how long, but we still want you to sign up"

Have a Great Day!!!

Afternoon all
I was given a locomotive today and it needs some help.  I have tried to find a service manual on line but haven’t had any luck,so I am wondering if anyone in the Diner could help me out.  I really don’t want to go out in the main room and I know there is a wealth of info in the Diner.
I didn’t see a reference number that is asked for on the Lionel site, all I could find was part numbers.
I did get some rolling stock with it but I would like to see if I can get this running for the grandson when he gets a little older and the granddaughter as well if she would like to.  I should add that I don't have a power pack or track to see if it will even run.

Thanks

Evenin' folks!

Flo I'll have a slice of that Apple Cake from Petra and a cup of decafe.  I'll be at the back booth keeping warm.

Sheesh....  I thought I posted earlier this afternoon, but now that I think of it, I was going to do that but sat down in the chair at the computer and by the time I checked my email and the postings here I had joined the crew back there cutting Zzz.   The Kabob Lunch at Church was a big success.  I was once again in charge of making the salt potatoes (without much salt for the older crew that aren't supposed to eat anything that taste's good...) this year.  Brought my 130,000 BTU Double burner Fish Cooker and fired it up.  Had the water boiling (about 30 gallons) in about 15 minutes, turned the heat way down to idle for the next 45 minutes, then turned it back up when we put the potatoes over.  I have to get the water boiling early because the ladies in the kitchen are still convinced that I will never get that amount of water to a rapid boil in time......  Their blood pressure goes way down when I walk in and say, "waters boiling".  they look surprised and say already?  I then grin and walk out to check out the fire pit for the kabobs and chat with the other men out there.  A half hour before they want the potatoes cooked I grab the 50 lb. bag of potatoes, open them and dump them all into the huge pot.  Kick up the gas.  Ten minutes later they start to boil again, 20 minutes after that I walk in to the kitchen and say where re the pans you want them in.  Today that happened at the exact time the lady in charge of the kitchen told me she wanted them.  Love it when I can do that!!! Smile,Wink, & Grin

Well I have 5 days to get the cleaning and finishing touches on the layout for the judging.  Actually it is a week from Monday, but will be out at the museum on Saturday and Sunday to w**k.  I also need to take some paperw*rk over to my insurance man so he can let my business insurance run out, finish cutting the lawn for the last time this season, move all the equipment from the trailer, load the woodsplitter onto the trailer, attend a few meetings, and ............  I shouldn't be bored this week.

The guy that was supposed to varnish the siding by the deck on the house sought me out to apologize for not getting it done for me.  The wet summer and a heavy w**k load just didn't let him get it done.  he said he been over to look at it a couple of times and found I wasn't home.  He said that it didn't really look in that bad of a shape.  He will put on his list for next year early.

I have to go get a wash out out of the washer nd shut the woodstove down (getting hot in here...).

Well, got the outside rails painted where I've got the feeders soldered, probably paint the inside rails Tuesday and then next will be ballasting. Also stripping my locos in prep for ANRR paint.

EDIT: Updated ANRR logo w/ the new colors:

Good Evening, Flo - I'll have a slice of that Apfelkuchen that Ulrich brought in this morning (from what I dug up, Apfelkuchen is sorta like an apple crumb coffee cake - to die for) (Okay, that last part wasn't in the descriptions I found, but after all, Petra made it, right? Dinner) and a Rio Grande mug of the French roast, please 'n' thank you!

Today didn't start out too well; wasn't sure if I was coming down with flu, sinus headache or what, but whatever it was, I decided NOT to share it at church.Dead Called another of the singles to have him let anyone else know, and I went back to bed for a couple more hours. Still slow getting started later, got around to eating after 'lunchtime' and got my shower in then. I may need to run the shower a bit longer. Possibly my sinuses are getting too dry with the weather cooling off and being dryer (unlike your area, Tom). Finally had a thing of yogurt for a (very) late lunch, followed not very long after that with dinner (grilled chicken, salad, sliced peaches, milk). I feel better now than I started this day, for sure.

Calif.Tom, I'm guessing you had a DVR (provided by your satellite company) that held the movies you lost. One thing I'd want if I ever got cable or satellite would be capability to store any videos on a separate hard drive (which I could unplug, in case of storms). I looked to see if Amazon or even iTunes might have it listed (one Amazon seller had previously had a VHS tape, but not now). No luck, sorry for you. Sigh I did find this place online, if you want to check out the quality of it:

Saw a show tonight (dinnertime here) on Missouri sawmills (produced by the Mo. Dept. of Nat. Resources). It was about sawmills in Missouri which produced ties back in the 1920's and for some afterward, which were for a tie treatment plant in East St. Louis, Illinois. I posted a topic out in the big forum, if you want to read what I put (not much, since I couldn't easily eat dinner and take photos of the screen). Others might've seen the show, so there might be more in the posts than what I put up. Smile,Wink, & Grin Here's the link to the topic - I decided it would fit better in prototype info.

Johnboy - that's neat about the prototypical LMR - so, will you have to wait on one of the decal makers to re-decal your locos and cars? Whistling

Ulrich, having moved a few (dozen?) times in my life, I've made that 'interesting vs. essential' discovery a time or two. I still seem to collect more of the 'interesting' class. The stereo being that old doesn't surprise me  a lot; I was deleting some old files off my backup drive today, and realized it's been probably six years or more that I've been at my current apartment. Time flies when I'm not tracking it (and sometimes when I am...). That Marklin plan looks a lot like many 4 X 8 layouts I've seen in various plan books (better than some) - I'm guessing there are at least two levels involved on that, right? Best wishes on just outlasting 'em with the Banged Head paperw**k, and the driving. Thumbs Up Your counties must be pretty big over there, compared to ours in Missouri.

PC, I was thinking that the axe was your 'instrument of destruction'.... Did I see a photo of your guitar earlier, or just hallucinate that? Mischief You got me thinking about getting my guitar out, which needs refretting (I've been thinking about having a pickup put in the old Epiphone acoustic - Texan model - but that'd cost more than the $30-45 that just the frets would run me).

Sawyer, I saw tonight that Jimmie Johnson is not 90 points ahead in the standings? That's a nice, sizeable lead, eh?

Jeff - sorry, got you confused for someone else who made the comment, I guess. Oops

Duke - is that Lionel diesel in O scale, or HO? Not that it would make my answer for your question any more knowledgable...). I was asking for the other Diners who actually may know. Or you could email RT (Bill), who is more into O scale, as I recall. Actually, nevermind on that last, I just emailed him for you with your page's link.

Ray - so is that battery a special shape, that you have to get just from Canon? Or the same as I could get for using in my camera? I've been considering a bigger memory card for my camera, but I find that I haven't run out in one day yet. Of course, I 'downgraded' my photo size to (I think) 1900X1200, since I won't be printing any murals from them... And itt sounds like you've pulled that trick on your church ladies before, haven't you? Smile,Wink, & Grin So what happens if they ever walk out by the cooker and spot your trick? Whistling

No new progress on the layout today, due to being under the weather (or something - but it wasn't a typhoon, Tom). I think I have about half of the layout track re-done so far. I'd thought this afternoon about pulling everything (track nails, loco, cars, etc.) off and taking the shop vac to it, and the tops of my electric heaterboards (haven't got to them for way too long...).

Todd, I hope the above doesn't get me kicked out of the LMWA (Low Maintenance Weathering Association - "We think that house dust IS weathering")...Whistling Hey, I'm with your ideas on train shows - I look for the out-of-production stuff (hopefully also bargains) and/or the older bargains when I go. The Model Power level of cars (last show where I saw them) were going for $2 or so. I've found with some (not all) sellers, and more likely the second (or last) day, you can make them an offer if they have something that you really would like - but can actually live without - and see if they will take it. Some of them are more stubborn than the others who don't want to haul their 'treasures' back home again. But that's just my My 2 cents, of course...

About time for me to head for home, hit the sack, and get up tomorrow for the 'W' thing they want me to do to get that paycheck. Prayers for everybody recuperating (or just trying to stay healthy).

[Edit:] Sue, excellent job on the trestle (and the photos) - as was said, WELL worth the wait! Bow

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Been having trouble with my internet connection all day today, Par for the course with SuddenLink. One minute it's up, next 10 minutes it's down. Gotta go see the foot doc tomorrow so he can poke and prod at my foot some more.
