Ulrich, I meant for Robby P.  Those jobs would be a huge commute for you in the morning!

Jeff, the building looks great; did you cut it in half yet?

Vincent, that’s where I got my new job, It’s a good place to keep an eye on.  Even if all you do is get a part time job, you got your foot in the door and your information is in the system.  When you apply you need to review the job description and answer the questions with the key words they use in the advertisement for the job.  The first filter to the hiring process is how many times you use the keywords in your resume and the online questions.

Robby and Ulrich let me know when you start shipping syrup I’ll line up some revenue cars to haul it, lol.

I went to LHS today and picked up a 4 pack of Buffalo Creek RR box cars (Branchline Blueprint series) , a Detroit & Toledo Short line RR box car (Branchline Blueprint series), and Dorothy picked out a Milk Tank car (boxcar).

Jeff - the hotel came out great!. The exterior color and weathering looks perfect to me. Are you going to do a view block or floors and interior?

Not really. It's supposed to look ready for demolition by implosion. In a case like that many of the interior walls will have been removed.

I've been tied up all day. First I had to go over to my sister's place to feed her pets. That was at 7:30 this morning. There's 5 dogs, 4 cats and several ferrets. That kept me busy until 7:58. I went down to my parents place and as my father wasn't there (he was out rounding up brake parts for his Mercury Tracer) I rousted my mother out of the bed. She'd lay there all day if we let her. That's not in the recovery plan. I fixed her breakfast then took a few minutes to have a look around online. My father came in and said he needed me to follow him to the repair garage in town so he could drop off his car to be fixed. So he set off in his little Tracer and I followed him in my mother's Marquis. Boat would be a better name for it as it's quite large. Why do small people always have to get BIG cars. I picked him up at the garage and we went to DQ for lunch then I took him back to the garage so he'd be there when the work was done. I then took my mother's car back home and commenced to making her lunch when the physical therapy tech decides to drop in. Well that pushed lunch back another hour but I had to be there in case my mother needed any help. There are few people whom she'll allow to touch her. I'm one, my father's another. After physical therapy was done I served her lunch. When she finished (2:14) I was finally able to come home and relax a bit. I have to go back at 6 to prepare her dinner, if my father isn't there that is. Then I have to go to my sister's place and feed her menagerie again. That will be it for the day. Would you believe some people think I have an easy life of staying home and doing nothing? HA!! For a crippled person I'm quite active!

Hey guys, went out for a bit with my mom this morning. We went to the LHS, and I ordered two sets of microscale railroad gothick block white lettering, onme red decal trim sheet, a thing of microsol, and Engine Black paint. we went to Dunkin Donuts and wal=Mart too, then we drove down to the passing siding here, I got a couple pics, then over to where they're rebuilding Aiken's old depot and I got some pics of the caboose and dinning cars. Picvs here:

Mornin' I'll have pancakes and Maple syrup please. ???? What do you mean you're out of Maple syrup. Why? Oh you don't know where it went. Hmm Odd. Ok some blueberry syrup then.

Noooot much happened yesterday. Work in the evening and went and visited mom earlier around noon.

Johnboy- The link sent me to a video of an ore car dumpingConfused, But.... I found the video of Dolly Varden Mines and it is spectacular. I love those kind of layouts. Old timey backwoods settings. Love em' I should have done one myself but I didn't think about it when I expanded off of the old "kid layout". I should have, it wouldn't be like I was saving anything. Because I could build one like that yes I could. Uh huh, yep sure could all I need is time and talent and I could build one juuuust like thatWhistling. Thanks for the link.

Say, I still could. Would that be considered changing my mind? Again.

J.R.- I don't blame you on getting someone else for the tree. When it comes to big trees and chainsaws I never let machismo enter the picture. If I ain't sure, I walk away and say , "sorry not for me". As Dirty Harry said in Magnum Force "A man has got to know his limitations."

Jim- I'm with you on the Customs fees and such. Without dealing with it, it just made my head spin (which isn't real hard too do). I think I'll just stick with letting big business import and export.

Robby- I hope the car sells. You're right it is a bit plain for you, but you know, not all cars are rough. There are plenty that look just like this one. Someone may be modeling close to the year and don't need a rust bucket. It still looks great as usual. Good luck.

Garry- (takes big breath, so sit down or skip over) Pearl beer is predominantly a Texas beer anymore, but it didn‘t used to be. It was brewed in San Antonio in what was described as the "Most Beautiful Brewery in the US." It was a major supplier for generic beer to the troops in WWII and brewed the infamous Billy Beer. It used to be very popular up through the 70"s though by then mostly in Texas I believe. Pabst bought them several years ago (how many?) but now it's dwindling down to almost solely eastern Texas and probably less by now and very scattered at that. Too bad, it's very good beer. They say the foam in a glass looked like little pearls (looks like foam to me). They shut the brewery down a few years ago and it's made in Ft Worth now. Hamm's was pretty good also.

I didn't need that car (Hamm's) because it really doesn't fit my scenario but it's my world and I liked the car and I guess if I want it to fit, it will. Of course 3 Pearl cars will probably hold a years worth of that stuff too. To tie this more to RR stuff, the Pearl brewery in San Antonio was serviced by the Texas Transportation company and also serviced Lone Star Brewery (my favorite) for a while. It was a shortline and ran electric locos like this...

There, railroad stuff. No waste of bandwidth. Say maybe that would be a good beerline subject for someone with limited space as the shortline was something like only 2 miles long. 2 breweries and and a mainline connection. If you're interested here's some info.

Rob- A hairball. There has got to be some modeling use for that. Oh I see Robby already thought of one.

Ulrich- maybe you'd like a Pearl. It's a German beer. Oh maybe not, it's pale and served cold.Shock Sorry, we United Statesians just don't know how to drink beer. Laugh

Jeff- Ditto the remarks on the Hotel. And if I want to record, I too use a VCR. (unless on computer)

OK so there's another one. Lee didn't tell us he was having a cheese and a meat tray in advance. And don't try to say we missed the post earlier either! It's already been usedLaugh. Glad to hear the event went well. I bet you are pleased and relieved.

PC- tsk tsk, naughty naughty. But I know what you mean about loosing track of time.

Ray- What, Aunt Jemima isn't real maple syrup? (ducks as a spoon comes flying my way)

Well I best get moving, I got my errands done this morning, the dog now had a Pedicure (just claws clipped but she thinks it's a fancy nail job. Dumb dog.)and we went visiting to show off, now she's tuckered out and it makes me tired looking at her.

Have a Great Day!

(Sticks head back in door) Hey girls, I found the Maple syrup. It's out back. That's weird. I wonder how it got out here? I never noticed it when I came in.Confused

Sir Madog
That 20 $ a pint maple syrup is grade  a stuff - so it is not out of line... No chance for a good business,

Two years ago I found a quart of Medium Amber (Grade A) Day Bros. Farm Maple Syrup in late August at the Mennonite Farm Market I get Vegies from during the summer.  They are just down the road from Day Bros. Farm.  They had it for $24.95 a quart (they must have got the remainder of that years inventory from the farm....).  I grabbed my wallet and bought a jug!  Lasted me a year and a half.  Right now I am using a pint of dark (Grade B) that came from a School Farm (for troubled youths) in the Southern Tier of NY.  It was given to me by my Daughter in Law who works at a different location of the same school near where I live.  I think they get over $14 for a half pint.  But man is it good!  The designation A or B has little to do with the quality of it, but rather the type.  Grade B (dark) actually costs more to produce as it is more concentrated and has a stronger Maple flavor.  Garde A is the Amber colors (light, medium and dark Amber) and has a lighter flavor.

Packer
Ray, isn't maple syrup just boiled maple sap? There are a few maples in the area, maybe I could try making some.

Well you could......  But the maples you have in Florida don't generally make good quality sugar.  There are actually several different types of trees that can be used to make sugar but the quality and flavor will vary greatly.  In the Northeast the most common tree tapped for sap is the Sugar Maple (aptly named....) and you will need slightly more than 10 gallons of 2% sugar-content sap to produce one quart of syrup.  Its a bit involved, and you will need to set up a Sugar Shack out back of your house or provide several large fans to remove the steam from the house and be prepared for some major house cleaning when you get done.  You can read more about the process here: http://ohioline.osu.edu/for-fact/0036.html

Good luck and let us know how you make out with it......WinkWinkWhistling

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Mornin' Everyone!

Sir Madog
And you guys are paying 5 bucks a gallon? We pay nearly 34 times more for that stuff. Any questions?

Ah........  I think Jeffrey and others are talking about the artificially maple flavored corn syrup base stuff from MallWart.........Whistling  Actually Pure NYS Maple Syrup and Pure Vermont Maple Syrup Grade A or B right here in Geneva direct from the farms that make it (One is about 3 miles down the road from me) cost $18.99 for a pint.  You can find it on line for up to $40 a Quart. Check out the price of this: Combs Farm Maple Syrup.  Your prices over in Germany are not out of line for the "GOOD" stuff.  People are not comparing the same product.  I only use Maple Syrup (usually grade B or Dark as it has a stronger maple flavor).  A little goes a long way and is the healthiest and tastes so much better than that other stuff!!!

Oh and even the corn syrup with some maple FLAVOR is a bit more than $5 a gallon most places: Pancake Syrup  Don't forget to check out the ingredients......

If fact, Zoe, I'll have a short stack of pancakes this morning and don't forget the Pure NYS Maple Syrup!  Oh and a side of bacon and my dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug.  Thanks!

I'll be at the Rivet Counter with the other folks.

Oh Garry, while I do have 2 0-5-0s, I only use 1 at a time so it is still just a 0-5-0....Whistling

... 5.00 $ is the retail price - probably 2.00 $/gallon from the producer. All we need is an internet shop, advertising, storage (can be rented) and a guy/lady who does the dispatching via mail...

Start to like the idea... Evil

Still too hot - I´ll have another RBF, Flo. Come to think of it, I start to like it!

Robby P.

Ulrich..........$20???  Man I hope it poors "gold" Mischief

I checked my math: It is 8 Euro for a bottle, containing 250 ml. There are 473 ml to a US pint, that´s a factor of 1.89 to convert the bottle into pint. That makes 15.12 Euro to a pint, at an exchange rate of 1.40 $ to 1 Euro that makes it 21.17 $ for a pint. There are 8 pints to a gallon, that makes it 169.36 $ to a gallon.

And you guys are paying 5 bucks a gallon? We pay nearly 34 times more for that stuff. Any questions?

Now if I buy a gallon at 5.00 $, have it shipped to Germany (bulk freight) at 7.00 $, pay 10% duty on it, sell it for 100 $ (including VAT) that gives me a profit of 70.83 $ on a gallon! If I can sell 500 gallons a month, that´will be a profit of 35,415.00 $ every month. Anybody likes to join me?

Good morning.  Its already kinda muggy and thats at 9:30am.  The high will be about 84.

Not much planned today.  Probably just be lazy.  Maybe move around some cars on the layout.

Lee...........Thats pretty neat you got all of those people to come by.   I have to many animals for a "showing".

Ulrich..........$20???  Man I hope it poors "gold" Mischief

Rob.........We have three cats, and thank goodness they don't mess with the layout.  I would have thrown some ballast on the hairball, and made it look like a mound of "gravel ready for the track".  Big Smile

Jeff..........I agree, nice looking hotel.  If/when I expand my layout, I will have to add some buildings.

Well I guess I pop back in later.  Have a good morning.

Mornin' all!

Another fine morning in Central Indiana!  Sun's up, and so am I.........though a little more shuteye would have been nice.

So last night, we get back from the county fair and it's about 9:30.  The sun is just setting, so I figure I've got a little time before the neighborhood gets quiet.  I decided to make a few cuts on a metalworking project I've got going.  If you know anything about cutting metal with a cutting wheel, you know it's not a quiet process (right JR?).  So anyways, I'm working on this thing, and if you're like me, when you get to working on something intently, you get tunnel vison.  The only thing you see is the project in front of you.  That was me.  So I make a few cuts on some heavier duty metal, and then it comes time for a thick piece of sheet metal.  So I'm cutting away, and sheet metal makes the biggest racket of all, and I hear my wife yelling for me.  I stop what I'm doing, and she says, "Your daughter wants to know why you're building Noah's Ark at 10:30 at night."  I look around, and I notice two things right off.  First, it's now dark.......very dark!  Second, a good portion of the houses in my neighborhood have no lights on!  This is bad!  So, I was the bad neighbor last night, though I didn't mean to be.  Oh well, I guess I'll have to be more cautious of the time of day (or night) in the future, huh?

So, whats up in your world?

Good morning,

I invited the local Model Railroad Club (5 people) over to check out my layout yesterday. I also invited the couple that runs the Local hobby Store (2 people).  Things went well, the first group of people arrived at 1pm, I had picked up pop, cheese & meat platter and a vegetable tray along with a box of assorted chips.  Overall things ran fairly smooth on the layout, everyone had a good time.  A total of 26 people came through my basement between 1 pm and 8 pm and we drank 5 pots of coffee.

So originally I invited 7 people over to my house, but evidently the guys at the club and the owners of the LHS made comments to others about my layout and people from NMRA Div 4 and NMRA Div 5 came out to see what was going on.

Today I plan on relaxing.

Good Morning All,

Already in the 70's(F) here with some thunderstorms predicted for later. Finishing up in the shop and loading this morning then off to Pitts burgh. To answer the question, yes I'm running Lotus 7 Climax (1960 Series 1 and too early to be a Super 7). The Lotus 18 is still in mothballs (no time or money to fix it just now). I'll have a regular and a coffee roll please.

Jeff - the hotel came out great!. The exterior color and weathering looks perfect to me. Are you going to do a view block or floors and interior?

Gotta run - lots to do again today - the rest of the guys are at Elkhart Lake for the Kohler International Vintage Race and I need to check in and see how that's going. Catch Y'all later, J.R.

Sir Madog

My wife and I do enjoy to put some maple syrup on pan cakes - delicious! But at a little over $ 20 for a pint it is as expensive as caviar... Sad

How much would that stuff be in the US?

Less than $5 a gallon.

Good morning.

It's 77 and partly cloudy. The high is supposed to be around the upper 90's and there's a chance of thunderstorms.

I spent much of the morning taking my mother from one place to another yesterday. First a doctors appointment then the pharmacy then we went to lunch at El Giro's then went to Stage so she could get some new clothes. From there we went home. Then my father and I went to Wal-Mart. While he did his grocery shopping I went to electronics and picked up a 5 pack of blank video tapes. Say what you will about them but VHS equipment is what I have and is what I'll be using until I can't keep the recorder going anymore and can't find replacements. I have 2 DVD players and the closest thing I have to a DVD recorder is the DVD burner in my computer. You should see the backup for my TV. It's an old (we're talking 80's tech here) 2 wire RGB color monitor. Not much but it'll work in a pinch if the big flat-screen goes out. My father is supposed to be home today so maybe I'll have the day to myself. The only thing I'll have to do outside is feed my sister's dogs while she's on vacation with her family.

Tall glass of cool lemon water, please.

Millie Kitty left a big hairball right on both the stickers for the Diner and the edge of the drive-in theater parking lot...Gurrrr! Will have to resurface that area of the parking lot. As for the stickers, those that got soaked are ruined. They were on my drafting table at the time. Bad cat!

Looks like some thunder-boomers headin' our way during the wee hours. YeeHaw! Guess i need to make a trip down to the barn and put old Sandy up in the barn and let Cold mountain out.

Looks like my train light is at the PO. I wasn't up to driving today with the equilibrium thing, so surely tomorrow will be a better day to go get it. Need to ship out some prints anyway.

Have a good night all.

Good Morning, Everybody!

Yaaawn, still sleepy - it´s been too warm in the bed room to get a good sleep. Zoe, may I have some of that eye-opening black stuff called coffee? In my ARR mug? Thanks, Zoe you are my life saver!

Packer

Ulrich, that ARR unit is nice. Is it an F9 or a late phase F7? I have a car just like the one you have it pulling.

It says F-7a on the box, must be an end-of-service life version. Those F´s are the epitome of a US Diesel loco to me, just like a UP Big Boy for a steam engine... sorry Barry - not one of the workhorses...Big Smile

Not much railroading scheduled for today - it´ll be too warm. Wife made a to-do list - it is about time I get to do some real w**k, that earns me some money and gets me out of the house...Smile,Wink, & Grin

Have a good day!

Good evening...

Uh oh, Did somebody mention taxes.....ugh....no...couldn't be........ Grumpy

Ray ... If you have two 0-5-0's, does that even them up?

Urich... that ARR locomotive model is beautiful. When I was up in AK in the '90's, ARR still had an F7B which was parked in Fairbanks as a standby in case one of the GP40's equiped for passenger had a problem. It must have been the most lonely F7 in the world at the time. A units (FP7A's I think) were gone. I have a photo of that F7B somehwere.

Vincent, you are very observant. Yes, it looks like it was an F9 HO model to begin with. ARR's were FP7A's, if I recall correctly.

Todd ............ I recall Hamm's advertising for the Cubs with cartoons of Indians in "The Land of Sky Blue Waters"... Boom, boom, boom.  I don't recall Pearl beer.

JR ... Hope the trip goes well!

Jeff ... glad teh wedding went so well!

Johnboy... That sounds like a neat train you are putting together.

Sawyer.... I like the blue GP35!

If Bridge Tom shows up show him the 2-10-10-10-10-10-2.We finally have a loco that will out do his Yellowstones!

 Good night!

Evenin' Folks!

Flo I'll just have a cup of decafe and a seat in the back booth to relax for a bit.

Just got home from camp.  I tweeked the system and added a hum eliminator in line from the mixer to the amp.  It worked like a charm, absolutely clean sound.  Also took out a couple Yamaha 15" Monitor peakers that can handle all that trhe amp can kick out and a lot more.  Nice deep sound and they had much better coverage than the old 12" speakers I gave the camp a decade or more ago.  They are happy, and I have 2 less speakers to get rid of......  Although I could have easily sold them.  They are the same speakers that the Dave Matthews Band uses for monitors (or did at least).  Nice and not terribly pricey (only about $500 retail each.....).  One of the area directors out there is a teacher who has worked for me for several years.  After we set up the system and I reviewed a couple of absolutes for Pro Sound, he took over and ran the concert (campfire...).  At the end I went to the office and informed the Camp Director that the kid (Archer Director) was "Certified" and that the Program Director, as always, was still certifiable.......Whistling

Not much done on the layout today.  I did do some quick wiring for the lighting in the temporary freight house.  Didn't get it completely done as I have to make a run from the closest hub on the lighting bus.  Should get that done tomorrow and one more item can get checked off on the list.

Hope all of you have a great evening! [edit] Looks like I have the top of the page, so midnight snacks are on me.  Order up!

Robby, I really like how that cars looks!!! Heck, I'll probably try and find it on epay if you sell it. BTW, good luck on the job hunt. I'm already have one but am keeping an eye out for something better (I'm tired of coming to the dog sniffing me like I'm fast food).

Ulrich, that ARR unit is nice. Is it an F9 or a late phase F7? I have a car just like the one you have it pulling.

Nothing much lately, but getting a new razor saw and/or miterbox is in the works. I was working on the wrapped lumber load for my bulkhead flat cutting some 1/4" square dowels then noticed that the cuts weren't square off. Don't know why that is happening, maybe the razor saw is bent or the box is messed up.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Jim.............Not yet.  I put in for a smiliar job today.  They are taking apps till Friday.  I also put in for a job near me.  A uniform place (for mechanics, shops, etc).  The starting pay is $11 a hour.  It said heavy lifting, but even my wife said that won't be hard for me to do.   I hope something comes along.  Cool  Plus, I went with a non-rust bucket.  The pictures I found on the MNS were just faded.  I doubt it will sell.  To plain Sigh.

Evening, Chloe - I'll have a bowl of vegetable beef stew, please, and a RBF. Thanks!

We had a severe thunderstorm front come through between half hour and an hour ago - dark clouds, I heard there were some greenish ones in there (but no rotation, thank Heaven!), and a bit of downpour and wind. Luckily, I was already at my WiFi spot - inside, at first running on batteries but after the worst went through, plugged back into the wall socket. I can see some of the sunset now out the window.

Johnboy - good to see you in the Diner, and best wishes on your 'Rainbow Special'. Thumbs Up And that video of the Dolly Varden Mine is awesome! BowBow Lot of w**k went into that layout!

JR, you must've had some storm through there, if it blew down an 18" thick branch. Shock I expect that the fence will be easier to fix (metal or chain link, right?) than the truck's hood (and contents) would've been. Good idea to call in reinforcements on that one. Thumbs Up

Jeff - swamp coolers?! Cool Hadn't thought of those in a long while - my Dad had one of those when he was living and in the Phoenix area. I guess they work for humid areas, also, eh? Sounds like a fun reception. Cowboy

Ulrich - congrats on getting your early birthday present! When's the actual day, so we can tell Zoe and Chloe (and what type of cake do you like)? After reading through yours and JR's explanations of VAT, customs fees, and such, I think I'm gonna need some aspirin Dead - Chloe, could you hand me the aspirin bottle, please? Thanks. [Edit]: Hey, that F-7A looks great - Bow EXCELLENT choice! And what scale is that other loco, by the way (narrow gauge?)Confused? Nevermind, I see you explained - and that's great-looking, too!

Uh, Todd... (on those government pay raises...) - Amen! Oops Oh, on the Bachmann Plus, they also had some structures that were better detailing and such in their Plus line. I once saw a really neat Art Deco style bus station on the 'Bay which was a Bachmann Plus kit.

Robby - hey, does that MNS boxcar look too clean to anybody else? That's very subtle and understated (and excellent - I like the fading on that!). Hey, any word back yet on that 2nd shift job you were trying to land?

Now, Rob, are you sure on that MRI, that it isn't that you're afraid of what they might not find? Whistling Might definitely be worth seeing about having the meniere's thing checked out, though. Maybe your wife can 'borrow' and MRI machine and bring it home to check you out? Oh, darn! Sigh

CN Charlie - only 9 years since you had to spend on repairs for your car? Wow!! I'd love to have that long without something on the vehicle needing fixing (not countint oil and lube and such..)! Usually mine have needed to be traded in before then (but then again, my last two vehicles were bought used).

I'll be at the corner booth, as I need a little extra room to fiddle with track planning (and want to see if I can make a MRR task list of stuff I need to do.

Prayers for good test results, healing, good rest, and less pain for my fellow DIners (and your loved ones). And where's BridgeTom been hiding himself? (Have Uff-Dah and Spooky joined forces with Bre'r Rocky the Raccoon and taken over the house for the Yellowstones? Hope not!)

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau
