Mornin' everyone!

I was going to spend part of the day out at the Museum today.....  I then was thinking (always a bad thing to do) about several home projects that have to be done while the sun is shining and the fact that it would be aftern oon already by the time I could get there (an hour drive from here).....  So I guess I'll get some needed things done around here and maybe head out to the museum Tuesday evening.  We have work sessions out there every Saturday and Tuesday.

The UPS man brought me some "finishing touches" that I needed for the layout yesterday.  Walked right across my freshly sealed deck (right through the barriers)......Grumpy   Got a Jib Crane kit and a Mail Crane kit to use in and near Hopewell Junction.  Also bought a couple Tortoise machines to use for signal operation.  I am getting very near to completion  on the portion of the layout I am using for the Scenery Certificate (NMRA).  the only things I want and can't find anywhere are old 1920s and earlier types of farm machinery for one scene.   Probably will have everything done and ready to be judged for Merit Points by mid July (I hope).

Flo I'll have my usual bowl of Raisin Bran cereal and lots of dark roast coffee in a R&GV Mug. Thanks, I'll be in the booth with Jim discussing software for our Macs......

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO

We'll get there sooner or later!

Good morning, I think it's still morning anyway. Just coffee please. Thanks. I opted for the pressure washer. Really comes in handy but alas, something has to suffer in light of the additional expense of the purchase. Yes you guessed it, at least I have some things I can do with out any additional purchases.

Jason-I have a collection magazines that I began when I started subscribing to Car Craft back in 1979 or was it 8, 9 I think anyway, I now have a bookshelf full of these critters and for all my intentions and plans other than a few reference articles they had in the early early eighties, I can only say that keeping them has given me the opportunity to say I have them. I am trying not to let myself fall into that with MRR. It's tough.

Ulrich- I don't like your situation, but I love your description!  Sign - WelcomeTo the diner.

Best get movin' still have to mow, (played with pressure washer too long) I want to get all the stuff done so I can get some time Sunday in Toddland (of which I'm King) I woke up this morning at about 3am with a stopped up nose and a sore throat with a healthy dose of post nasal drip. I've been salt water flushing all morning. Can't seem to get more than a few feet from the nose wipes. I'd rather the stuff run out the nose than down the back of the throat. You pay for that later with all the hacking and spitti.....Huh? What's that Flo? Oh, people are trying to eat , sorry.

Have a Great Day!

Oh and Tom, Uff-Dah's position is nothing, check this out. I used to sit like this when I was....... AAAAAAAGH!!!!

It´s getting to be late afternoon, here over the big lake, so I go for a beer now. Is Coors still around? That´s what I had back in the 70´s, when I stayed on in the US.

It was a drab day today, with a spell of cold, but no rain. A good day for finalizing my track plan. My wife is complaining that I spend too much time in front of this "toaster", drawing funny looking lines... Whistling

Yeah Jim, I do use a PC track planning software - it is WinRail,  same as Atlas´ RTS, but with a complete library of different makes.

Time to get started with preparing dinner...

See you, guys!

Good Morning, Flo, I'll have a stack of waffles, maple syrup, a couple of strips of bacon,  glass of Ed's OJ, and some of your TH in an Espee mug, please. Thank you!

Todd, I kinda suspect what you had said - the cars KNOW when you're not watching them, and they can get away with taking off ("Hey, Boxie! Let's make a break for it!")

Calif.Tom, you're right about Uff-Dah's sleeping posture. I was doing some online training yesterday, and I'm pretty sure I saw that 'arms' in one direction and the lower body turned 90 degrees the other - as an example of what NOT to do!Laugh Heck, if any of us slept like that, we'd be heading for the chiropractor that next morning.

Sign - Welcome to the Diner, Ulrich (Sir MadDog)! I've enjoyed your posts out in some of the other forum topics. Have a cup on me. Hey, if you feel like posting any of your plans, have at it. Thumbs Up Are you drawing them 'old school' (pencil on paper), or with software program? I've done most of mine (the past few years, anyway) with a program on the Mac (Railmodeller, written by a guy in Germany).

PC maybe on the leatherw**king it's just the pleasure of messin' about with your hands, or the feel of leather. I have a guitar strap (very simple, straight pieces with some cut (rounded) corners that I made when I was in the Navy in Memphis area. I also made another more ornate (tooled/carved leaf and vine type) one, but didn't keep that, ended up giving/trading it to one of my guitar buddies back a ways. Enjoy your weekend - any bikeriding in your plans?

Jeff, just saw your post - take care of that toe (and the rest of your feet), okay? Good to hear that your mother's improving, if they are ready to take her breathing tube out. Prayers will continue, though. AngelAngel

Jason, if you're gonna get rid of the mags, you could scan the articles you like in, and then sell the mags on one of those auction sites (or see if your LHS would take them on consignment).

I'll be in the corner booth, Dinner watching the morning switcher struttin' its stuff. Prayers for continued healing and comfort and a great weekend for all you Diners (and loved ones).

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good morning.

It's 62 and sunny. The high will be around 88 and it will be partly cloudy.

Went to the foot doc yesterday so he could examine my feet again. There were to be X-rays done but they've been pushed back to next week because of the problem with my left big toe. All the skin peeled off of it earlier this week. The doc has me on antibiotics to head off any infection. I spent most of the day in Alexandria seeing my mother at Rapides General. She's still in ICU. When we left they were preparing to remove her breathing tube. Further updates as they become available.

Good morning, nice and foggy here is western Pa.  BUT the high will be 78.  Good ole' short weather.

Probably won't do much train stuff today.  Saturdays the wife, and I spend "window shopping".  Can't buy much, but its free to look.

Well Barry said he's been hearing birds sing, well................................Try 11 pigeons eating all of your bird seed!!  Sounds like a helicopter taking off when they fly away.

Well I think I found something we could add to the "diner".  Two of our cats was sitting in the window sill, and maybe we can add them to the "diner".   Plus thats two less animals I will have to clean after Mischief.

I guess I better get ready.  Everybody have a good day.

It is now sunny and 11C outside. The Robins have been singing on our windowsill in the bedroom and we've also been listening to the Cardinals and some White Throated Sparrows and a couple of other assorted birds. Audrey and I saw a dang Coyote this morning in our backyardShockWhistling which probs got everybody up and at 'em.

It´s Saturday morning here on the other side of the big lake, so it is a breakfast coffee for me, plus some hotcakes from the griddle.

Not much railroadin´ this weekend - the global financial crisis has put a ban on capital investments into miniature transportation issues. Time to revert back to the drawing board and re-visit the plans which have been made for the better times to come.

Stayin´alive is not easy these days!

Jason:

Just read your post about POWDERKEG.  IMBD is way off on the location filming--the railroad sequences were filmed near Old Tucson and south of there.   Paramount Pictures bought a lot of the old V&T locomotives and rolling stock in 1939 for use in their movie UNION PACIFIC and stored them in Los Angeles, where they were used by several studios for years.  They've been all over the place as movie props, and several of them ended up on the train in POWDERKEG.  That movie was actually a pilot for a Rod Taylor TV series, which ran for a few years in the 'seventies--it was lots of fun.

Agree with you on the SP loco, though.  It looked like a 2-6-0 to me.  Handsome little devil.  I think I've seen it in some other movies filmed around Old Tucson.

If you want to see Rod Taylor in another terrific film that includes a train, you might want to look up a movie called DARK OF THE SUN aka THE MERCENARIES.  It was filmed in Jamaica and features a really nifty Baldwin 4-8-0.

Black coffee for me please. I'm on duty and have the mid watch. Funny thing about that mid watch. I can't make myself go to bed at 6 in the evening even though I have to be up all night. Oh well, I'll just have to use some help from my old friends Mr. Coffee, and Mr. Copenhagen.

I just got done burning a very interesting flick. It's called Powder Keg and it was released in 1971. Here is the synopsis from IMDB.com.

Just before World War I, two adventurers are hired to bring back a hijacked train from Mexico. A Mexican bandit is about to be executed in the United States. So his brother takes over a train and holds the passengers as hostages unless his brother is released. Now both the Americans and Mexicans are baffled as to what to do. But one of the passengers, who wrote the letter for their captor, has a suggestion; call Hank Brackett and Johnny Reech, two mercenaries. Which they do. And as expected they do come up with a plan but the President of the Railroad is not sure if it will work.

The locomotives had SP written all over them. I also noticed what appeared to be a V&T Kimble passenger car in the film. If you have seen it, I'm refering to the middle of the three coachs. I'm not certain though because IMDB says the it was filmed around Santa Fe, NM. I don't think any of the V&T's equipment made it that far west after the line was abandoned. Either way, it was a great movie. I highly recomend it. Does anyone have any info on this movie?

In other news, my wife is really starting to pester me about purging my collection of MR and RMC mags. I really don't want to do it though, I love the articles and looking at all the old ads. I'm thinking about tearing out the articles and ads that I wish to keep and placing them in a binder inside some plastic sleeves. But I just can't bring myself to do it. If I don't the stacks are just going to keep growing, so I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet.

I'm gonna go topside and get some air, I'll catch ya'll later.

Hey, PC! - Is it the weekend yet for you? Sure hope it gets to you soon, with the w**k week you've had lately. Dead

It has been pretty brutal lately, but yeah, I made it!  It's the weekend!  And I already broke out my leatherworking stuff and did some stuff for the bike.  Something about that just relaxes me so much........

Evening all from Starting-To-Settle-Down-Cal.  Predicted thunderstorm went 'phooey' and petered out, but clouds went into the Sierra, and instead of pounding the mountains with lightning and thunder, they turned into SNOW!  Shock   It's June, for cryin' out loud, and we've got two trans-Sierra highways closed above 7000 feet because of BLIZZARD conditions.   Highways 80 and 50 are still open--the major Sierra routes, but highways 120 and 108 down around Yosemite are closed down tight.  You have to remember that our signature mountain range out here in Cal is a little wierd--the further south you go, the higher the peaks and the higher the passes.

Well, anyhow, that's where we stand right now.  This little 'disturbance' that's been spiralling over us for the past week is supposed to move East within the next few days.  If it doesn't peter out over the Rockies, you guys in the Midwest better get PREPARED!   This has been some NASTY June weather out here.  However, in our favor, it has done one thing--sure helped the Drought.

Robby:  Promise not to send you 250 reefers, buddy.  One day I'll get brave and try it myself.

Vincent:  You and Robby make me look like a rank beginner, and I'm an official Old Fart.  Great job with that rust.

Jeff:  Hope things are healing up around your family.  Keep us posted.

Jim:  I don't understand this thing about the Stimulus Check, myself.  I'm a "W" and my lady friend Lois, whose name begins with an "S" and my buddy Don, whose last name begins with an "A" is still waiting for theirs.  I figured it was going to be Alphabetical and I'd be waiting until mid-June.  Maybe it has to do with the date of your birthday (mine's early in the month).  Or maybe your birth-year.  Mine's in 1939, so maybe the Government wants us Old Farts to get ours early and spend it before we kick off.  It's just a weird waiting game.

Well, went out to the garage and did some Espee'ing, on the layout today.  Hooked up my old and reliable Balboa GS-4 Daylight 4-8-4 steamer to some passenger cars and snapped a few shots.  I'll post them this weekend.  That Daylight is older than a lot of us, and still runs like a Swiss Watch.   IMO, when brass runs well, there's STILL very little that can touch it.  End of lecture.

One  thing I HAVE to post here, though, is what I found when I came back from the garage.  Uff-Dah the Viking sprawled out on His Chair.  Now I ask you, how do cats manage to sleep comfortably in this position?  If WE tried it, we'd be in Traction.

Notice the angle between the front and back legs---OUCH!  Shock

Well, that's it from this end of the country.  Spooky just bit me on the foot, so it's feeding time at the Zoo.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Rob- I can attest to what Jim said, the ONE place that derails is in the ONE spot that is difficult to get to. I can find nothing wrong with the spot (yes it IS at a turnout) and it isn't just with one car, (no lokos yet) AND to make matters worse, NEVER when I'm watching!!! NEVER. I think it is just because it's hard to reach and I'm away from the controls, not watching to see exactly where and the cars know it.Mischief

Good FRIDAY Big Smile Evening, everybody! Chloe, how about a hot fudge sundae and a CAW mug of coffee, please. Thanks!

Okay, there is just WAY too much weathering talent in this Diner - Vincent, OUTSTANDING job on those cars, I especially like the boxcars (dirty but not as rusted yet as they might be in another couple of years, at that rate). BowBow The more of you post, the more photos I'm gonna have to save and print (on photo paper for best detail) for future reference. Thumbs Up

SoggyTom - that's one heck of a way to wake up, but at least Uff-Dah wasn't sleeping ON your face...Shock He was probably tuckered out from staying up late with Spooky, watching the lightning show last night/this morning...Wink Hey, no need to ship all 250 reefers to Robby (though he'd do a great job on them) - with 250, you should have no problem getting plenty enough practice on them, once you start and go through the first couple of dozen. Besides, once you get the hang of weathering reefers, you can strip the early 'practice' ones and do them up like the latter ones, where you had it done solid! By the way, how come I'm still waiting to see my stimulus check? I'm beginning to think I'm the only one who hasn't got his yet. Evil

On an unpleasant side note, yesterday at w**k I had noticed that I hadn't turned in my mileage sheet (about $37-38 for the month, so it'll help on gas money). Then today, I went looking in my on-call folder, and found my on-call time sheet - which was supposed to have been turned in at the end of MAY!! Oh, #$%*&^!!! Shock So, I immediately finish up getting that ready and take it to my supervisor to sign and then to our payroll gal, Linda. Luckily for me, Linda has a kind heart, and said she'd run my on-call paycheck with the 2nd paycheck on the 22nd. She also said for me to turn in any on-call hours that I have by the 15th of the month, and she'd run those, too. So I'll have to watch things somewhat closely with tomorrow's paycheck, but may have a little wiggle room on my 22nd paycheck. Whew!

NS Joe - not bad at all for a photo from a cell camera. Until I got my digital camera, my w**k cell's camera was what I was using. The patch job looks good. And SpongeBob in Spanish class, huh? Whistling

Wonderful weather today (and, didn't hurt a bit that the Cards won last night, either - Yeah!!). Sunny, not too cool, even with the breeze. Cooler tonight, but then up into the 83 F (28 C) range tomorrow, so should be another good day for any painting/weathering spraying I might want to do.

Rob, just make sure you can reach all parts of your layout track. Murphy's Law says that the one place you cannot reach in the back of the layout (and that you triple-checked before doing scenery and covered it up), will be the place where the loco will decide to die/stall out on you. Banged Head Just a little fair warning from what I've heard (I'm still getting to the wiring and scenery stages on my layout, so I may have that ahead of me, also)...

Hey, PC! - Is it the weekend yet for you? Sure hope it gets to you soon, with the w**k week you've had lately. Dead

Jeff, how was your mother today - any word/call on her? Is your father still alive (and out of the hospital himself)? And what'd your doctor have to tell you?

I'll settle down here by Barry, and have my dessert now. Hope this weekend that everybody gets some good (ahem... Joe?) F.U.N., model railroading stuff, and R&R (rest and recuperation, rather than the other one that Mark likes so much Wink). Prayers will continue (hey, we all can use 'em) for all.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Here's the (mostly) finished 2201. Again, the picture sucks cause it's from my phone:

I have to go to a party, so I'll catch up later. Peace.

***Jerry, thanks for supplying our latest Desktop Background pic.Thumbs Up Hopefully my wife won't trouble me about the lack of progress on her own (HO) layout when she sees it.Whistling

Made it into the train room again today. Big Smile Then I decided to change my track plan "again" along the back wall shelf. Too many straits with not enough interest, so took the inside track and turned it into a looping overpass on itself. (sorry, don't know the technical term for that) Not very prototypical, but more interesting for running trains, at least for me it seems so. This will also make it more difficult to reach a derailment if one ocures on the backside/outer track because the inner track now grades upward there. Gee, might need to keep rethinking all this stuff.Dunce

Have a good one all.

Afternoon all, its raining, with a little thunder here and there.  Nothing much happening on my end of the world, just kind of hanging.  I wanna work on the house some when I get off work, but if the liquid sunshine keeps up, I won't be able to set the compressor outside, nor will I be able to throw wood onto the sawhorses and cut it.  Stupid weather!!!

I guess that I'll have a slice of chocolate cake and a glass of milk and retreat back into the window booth.

Morning all from Let's-Do-It-Again-Today Soggy Cal:

Overcast and damp, with more T-storms moving in.  Whoa, this is JUNE out here.  I mean, it's swimming pool weather normally!   On the news today I was informed that we've had over 7,000 lightning strikes from the last two days of weather.  Luckily, most of them have been up the east side of the Valley and into the foothills, and not the high Sierra.  But we've also had TONS of rain with them.  June rainfall around here normally averages about 3/4 of an inch, we've already gotten FOUR INCHES in spots.  The rivers are up, small stream advisories--right now if my front lawn were any greener, I'd think I was living in Ireland! Tongue

Well, woke up this morning to what I thought was a MAJOR COPD attack--really bad trouble breathing.  Raised my head, looked down.  No attack, just a 21 pound Norwegian Forest Cat curled up on my chest.  This is a first.  Uff-Dah is normally a cat that likes to be around you as opposed to ON you.  Found out different this morning.  Don't know what's gotten into the cute lil' ol' critter, but he was asleep and seemingly happier than all get out.   Had to ease him off my chest so that I could get some air.

Jeff:  Glad to hear of your mom's improvement.  Hope she's back to semi-normal for the wedding.  I'm with you--if you're going to have an outdoor summer wedding, have it near a swimming pool! Tongue

Robby:  You do GOOD weathering.Bow  Hey, could I send you about 250 PFE reefers?  Whistling  I can't weather rolling stock for spit!   It looks kind of embarrasing sometimes, one of my nicely weathered articulateds crawling by with nice, shiny rolling stock behind it.   You'd think if I could weather a steam loco I could do a freight car, but NOOOOOOO----Blush

Well, time to feed the livestock and then go over to Kaiser and refill a couple of prescriptions, and that's dangerous, because the Roseville Kaiser is only three blocks from Railroad Hobbies and I don't need anything (yah, sure! Wink).  Besides, President Obama said that it's my Patriotic Duty to SPEND that there Stimulus Check, right?

Oh, PS:  My little 'block' problem was a loose wire.  Don't ask.

I'm feeling in kind of an SP-ish mood this weekend, so if I post in WPF, it'll probably be a cab-forward or two.  Or maybe one of my MT 4-8-2's.  Haven't decided yet.  Cool

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Robby, what'd you use for the rust on the boxcar?

I'm going to go out and do some airsofting in a bit, just though I'd drop by.

I weathered some cars over the week:

This gon I experimented a little bit. I drybrushed it grimy black then hit it with pastes and dullcote.

I did the same with the trucks and wheelsets on it. Personally I think they came out great.

Here's the trio of boxcars I weathered. Just pastels. I spent a while trying to figure out how to make the dullcote seal really good but I nailed it on all 3 cars. When I moved the UP box inside from the other carport it started raining and some got on the roof and left some shiny spots. I figure I'd leave it since it looks like parts of the roof got patched over.

Here's a tanker car I did, I have another one that I'm working on at the moment.

Here's some flats I got recently. A few of them are missing bridge plates, container shoes, and hitches; so I'll probably get some from Athearn. I'll also need to get trailers to go on them.

I set these engines up as a consit and have them sitting on a display shelf. I'll have to weather them someday, but I haven't done an engine with pastels before.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Well its lunch time, and I hungry.  Give the the cheeseburger basket, and a sweet tea.

I've been in the basement working on the C&O hopper.  Just one side done in a few hours.  I'm taking a break from it, and letting things dry.  Also I added a picture of the roof from the boxcar I had pictured yesterday.  This is what it looks like the the rusting agent at work.  It went from the dark gray to this!!!

Garry...............I'm with Jim, any train goodies?   I would hope so if its as long as the state of Kentucky.   All the flea market here had, was some 70's and 80's train mags.

Mornin' everyone!

Philip, now its Friday!  All day long, as a matter of fact.  I can remember those days where every Monday morning a friend and I would walk into the office at school, pick up our mail, and as we walked by the office staff say in a very loud whisper, "Is it Friday yet!!!"  Hope next week is a lot better for you!

Chloe I'll have the old phart special, small bowl of raisin bran with skim milk, and lots of COFFEE!  Dark roast in a FGLK mug if you please.  I'll be in the front booth watching the yard goat do some switching out there.

Jeffrey glad to hear your mom is recovering. Sounds like a long road ahead for her.  My prayers are offered for all of you. Oh, and good luck at the doctors today!

Tom W yes, Blackie and Manét are both sweet cats.  Very loving, snuggly guys.  They are litter mates and still play and groom each other.  Often I will find them both curled up together sound asleep.  That's over 40 lbs of cat sleeping there.........  Manét is the largest and kind of lumbers around the house. Blackie is a bit more like a discharge of static electricity.  They both spend time every day sitting on my shoulder purring up a storm.  Manét loves to be held in my arms..... upside down!

OK, I'm off to finish watersealing the deck today.  I have a window off opportunity today that won't present itself again for another week and a half (if I believe the weather people).  So I best get a move on.

Later!

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO

We'll get there sooner or later!

Thanks for the info Jim, I guess I will have to shoot MB Klein an email when I get home, I honestly didn't think about doing that.  Well, I'm going to enjoy my breakfast here in the corner booth and continue to watch the trains.

Jerry, that is a great shot!  Well, its getting close to breakfast time for me, so I guess I'll have stack of pancakes, two eggs scrambled with cheese, order of bacon, and a tall glass of milk.  I'll be in and out all day.
