A blueberry smoothie, please.

My family member who died in a train crash: Today we had a surprise visit from my uncle (90 years old) and aunt. Heath problems lead to their need to stop here. Anyway, turns out it was my aunt's brother who died in the head on train crash my mother had told me about many years ago. And get this, he worked for Kalmbach, was a model railroader, and when the accident happened he was on his way to a train show. The accident happened at the crest of a hill and neither engineer could have seen the other train until it was way too late. Not sure if someone missed a signal or if one wasn't working. This was perhaps 50 years ago. His name was William Wight and he was in his early thirties at the time, not that anyone here would have known him. Left a wife & baby behind.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Evening Gang: I spent the day at the hospital with Mary Ann. She had surgery on her left arm so they could hook up the dialasis machine there instead of the port in her upper chest. the port is not working real well but it will be 6 to 8 weeks before they can us the arm site. I hope that they get the jport working tomorrow.

Not a whole lot going on other wise. Since we have to get up really early again tomorrow I guess I'd better get to bed.

Good Night All

A Rainy Good Evening, Chloe - I'll have a cup of coffee and a brownie a la mode (or whatever), please. Thanks!

We had a total downpour tonight as I was driving over, and it let up a bit when I got to my WiFi spot. Then the rain came down even worse later, after I was inside and connecting up to the Diner. Might've seen some animals in pairs heading down the road, but not for sure on that one.Oops

Robby P.
Jim.........Its a start.  I dullcote before as well, to give it that "tooth".  Makes the powders stay better.   Let me know what kind of look you are going for, and then that will give me a better idea.

What, Robby? There are multiple 'looks'? Sheesh - where's the Wikipedia that explains all those styles for me? Dunce Sounds as bad as my trying to describe a cologne or perfume (I know absolutely nothing about perfume or cologne terminology).

I'll have to hunt down my Dullcoat - I think I have some around here. As for my alleged skills, I'm new at this weathering thing. I figured I needed some kind of desert dirt/sand color and/or some reddish cast would be good for the Southwestern setting. Which reminded me, I had an art teacher in my undergraduate days (he was a great watercolorist) who said you needed two 'muses' inside your head; one to start you going, and another to hit you upside of the head when it was time to stop. Smile,Wink, & Grin I think those boxcars has doors made with vertical slabs of wood, from the looks of them. Maybe I'll like the look better when I w**k on a 'regular' (AAR) boxcar with a metal door  (and horizontal shapes to the door).

Garry, thanks for posting that cartoon - very appropriate, any time. Thumbs Up What've you been doing lately (MRR'ing or otherwise)?

JR, better make sure you wear those safety goggles/glasses/face shield when you're w**king, y'hear? That doesn't sound like anything you want to be doing again - ever! Good that they were able to get it tended to so quickly.

Y'know, BridgeTom, I was thinking this afternoon at w**k: "You know what Tom needs for his layout? More refrigerator cars! Yep, he does NOT have enough of those things on his RR..." Whistling But hey, a guy's gotta show appreciation for the LHS folks who help him figure his problem out, right? Oh, you might appreciate this - on Woodland Scenic's website today, I was checking out their new products webpage, and they are supposed to be coming out with a set of cougars! Three cubs, a female, and two male cougars, I think it was. Take a look under the 'Coming Soon' tab.

Ryan, welcome back - and sounds like you must've been w**king overtime and then some for some time. Hey, fill me in - I have got (at local Mexican-family restaurant (which is also a family restaurant) chicken chimichunga which comes with Pico de Gallo - but there're a lot of things on the plate, and I never could figure out which of it is the P-de-G. I do recall there being 'mashed beans'(?), guacamole, chopped onions, chopped tomatoes, sour cream, (brown?/fried?) rice (and maybe something more). So which is the Pico de Gallo of all that? I'm not very knowledgeable about Mexican food, though I do know that I like that particular dinner offering.

Jeff, good to hear that they figured out what the deal was with your father and that he's out of the hospital now. Hopefully, his version of diverticulitis will be like mine. I was told (after some expensive scan and such...) that I had 'suspicion' of it, and I've just been watching to make sure that I'm eating more foods with fiber in them (like whole grain breads, cheerios, salads and other stuff). Haven't had any significant unpleasantries since then - may your father be as blessed! Will contine to keep him on the prayer list, anyway.

Got my haircut after w**k today (actually, got several of them cut). Wink Now I feel lighter, and after I get back home and wash my hair, I'll feel even better. I think there may be some rain tomorrow, and then it clears out and we should have some drier weather for Friday and the weekend. Yeah!!

Oh, and for our H-L watchers, they're having the 40 percent off coupon this week. Thumbs UpYeah!! I'll get back to my brownie now. Dinner

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

I think we have one thats perminately assigned to us now.

Hey, I was thinking of you last night.  I grilled some boneless, skinless chicken breasts last night.  While they were over the open flame I squeezed fresh lime juice over them, then just before they finished, I added a half slice of pepper jack cheese to melt a bit.  When I pulled them off I added a little peco de gallo over the top and served.  I couldn't help but think of you as I did it!

We had one heck of a storm here today. We got 4 inches of rain in about an hour with almost half an hour of heavy hail on top of that. The largest was marble size with the majority being pea size. My parents pool was down 5 inches this morning and is now 2 inches above the full line. We'll have to pump some of the water out into the lake tomorrow before any chlorine is added. Power was knocked out for several hours and the cable was down for a short time after power was restored.

Afternoon all from 92+SunnyCal:

Delta Breeze went away.  It will be gone for 3 days, according to our Omnipotent Weathermen here in Sacto, so it's going to be dry and hot down here, with thunderstorms in the Sierra.  Sorry, but late May is STILL a little early for that.  However--he said, hopefully--Tongue!  It's supposed to be in the low '80's here by the weekend.  Let's hope.

Took the ailing Atlas track-cleaner back to Railroad Hobbies in Roseville, about three of us spent some time doing a little surgery on the little dear, and we found the cure---O scale Kadee coupler springs!  YESSSSS----!  Thumbs UpThumbs Up.   The little dear runs like a top, now.  I was so delighted, I made a major RAID on the store--just to thank them--and came back with--you're got it, more REFRIGERATOR cars.  Anyway, I vacuumed up the rest of the railyard at Deer Creek, and the little car seems happier than a clam with its new motor contacts.  We all agreed that the car is the best thing since Sliced Bread for garage layouts out here in Basement-less Land, but we all came to the same conclusion--Atlas needs to work on their truck-motor contacts.  BTW, I bought two packs of the Kadees, just in case--Whistling

Jeff:  I've got a good buddy who gets occasional Diverticulitus attacks, so you and your father REALLY have my sympathies.  When he gets them, he's just out of commission for about three days.  That stuff is just devastating.

Garry:  That's a very thoughtful--and powerful--cartoon.  Thanks for posting it.

I notice that we seem to be having a conversation about 'stuff.'  Actually, my parents, who grew up during the Depression, were never real 'collectors' of stuff, so I'm still trying to figure out how I became so addicted (you should see my garage--SHEESH!).   My late father suggested that I might have been bitten by a squirrel when I was younger.  He may be right.  Everytime I have to actually throw something away, you'd think that it was being forceably ripped out of my hand, for cryin out loud.  Shock

Well, did the 'home-lab' work this morning for my tummy troubles (YECCH!) and dropped them off at the Kaiser lab on my way into the hobby shop.  Should have the results by tomorrow, so hopefully my Dr. and I can figure out what this is and how to get it to stop.   Since I have no cramps or vomiting or pain, there are things that can be ruled out, but I sure as heck hope it isn't a recurrence of Giardia.  The first five days of the 'cure' is almost worse than the disease.  At least it happened after school is out--but if I have to start the regimen, it means that I won't be in any condition to play Mass for Pentecost this weekend--and Pentecost is one of my favorite celebrations.  It's so DARNED "Positive!".

Oh, and BTW, as far as a recipe for "Uff-dah" on Lutefisk, my lady friend Lois, who is Scandinavian--gave me one.  She said it involves whitefish, lye, and turns out looking like a table napkin.  I'm gonna pass--that big, furry Viking can just learn to like tuna, instead, LOL!

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Tom Big Smile

Evening All,

A RBF and a slice of SRP if  I may please Chloe. Long day. Started off at 4:30 in the ER as I felt something in my eye and bright light was painful. Dr found a sliver but didn't have the equipment to extract it so off to the specialist a few hours later who did magic. A small piece of metatl from who knows where as I haven't been grinding or machining stuff for a few days. Never a dull momemt around here. Now have lots of drops and gel to go with the BP meds and antibiotics for the foot. Think my warranty may have run out.

Der - at least your guy was willing to get "pre-owned" parts and help you out a bit. I still cringe at stuff like that (sort of like $50.00 head gaskets for my Focus).

Jeff - diverticulitus isn't fun but it could have been worse. Best wishes for your fathers speedy recovery.

I agree with the rest of you on dental work. Also no dental insurance here though I might look into getting some stuff done at the VA if that is still an option. Still feel guilty though about looking at the option when I know we still have trouble taking proper care of our wounded vets.

Museum night last night - moved some track around on the O gage display to stop the large diesel engine from knocking Thomas for a loop (adjoining tracks slightly too close to each other). Spent some time tidying up and laying out the front bulkhead for the round house. It's starting to look like something besides a set of disconnected elements. I'm beat after not much sleep last night so it's off to the house for me. That pie was good.   Catch y'all later,   J.R.

An ironic thing is that my insurance will be gone in three weeks.  My wife's job is the source of our current dental insurance.  Her job will be no more in two weeks time.  Isn't it funny that my tooth decided to start hurting right before I lost my insurance?  I guess if I were lucky, my tooth wouldn't have had any problems at all!  Oh well, the tooth will only cost me two thousand instead of three!Sigh

Ray, I hope your visit to the dentist goes better  than mine as well.

I got lucky Corey.  He put in some pins and built a tooth.....  I was thinking crown was the next step.  This only cost me $185.  Good luck with your insurance.  Sure hope they pick up a good part of it for you.

Looks like we will be getting some rain this evening.  The weather map shows it heading my way.  Only a small area though.  On towards morning there should be some heavy rain.  OK by me as we are still big time behind in rainfall.

Hope all of you have agreat evening!

 Good afternoon folks.

"We're on a mission from God"!  For those that caught my first comment this morning.Cool

You guys are funny with how much stuff you save.  Wait a minute, I have a good start on my very own 'spare parts' box!Smile

Jeffrey, I'm glad to hear that your father is going home from the hospital.  My father had the same thing when I was a boy.  Back then, he spent six weeks in the hospital before a special surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN.

Ray, I hope your visit to the dentist goes better  than mine as well.  Apparently this tooth has had problems since I was a child.  At least, that's what the Specialist told me.  Hey, it's not my fault!

Running total for the tooth is at $460.  That is half of the procedure that I had today at the specialist. The insurance will cover the rest, I think!   He got it done though, so no yanking of the tooth.  That would have really set me off.  All of this only to have to pull it and get a fake one.  Now I have to go back to the regular dentist on Friday to get a crown to finish it off.  The crown will run about $800 and change.  I also have to pay for the failed attempt by my dentist at the root canal.  I sure hope he doesn't charge full price for something that he didn't do.  Then I have a cavity to take care of.  I just hope that the insurance covers more than the root canal.  This bill could hurt more than the tooth!

I'm working up the ambition to lay the track that approaches the river valley.  Maybe this weekend.

 Have a great night everyone.

Der- Aggravating isn't it? But of course you have "factory quality". When my truck was about 4yrs old, I had to replace the front idler arm. Twice in 2 years with factory replacements from the dealership. Then I tried an after market part (probably the same manufacturer MOOG) works fine. That was going on 10 years ago. Somethings I agree with factory parts, but somethings, hrumph.Grumpy

Ray-That's just what my thought is. Scratch and kit bashing. Unfortunately now I have a reason to keep it just when do I stop and how much is enough!! They all look so useful, oh my. I can do this and this oh my. Think of all the pipes and posts and, Hey that little scrap of styrene would probably come in handy. Probably shouldn't get rid of the instruction sheet, may need it again. Hmm, dull Xacto blade , I wonder...... (random thoughts as I was cleaning up earlier) I think I may need therapy.

Zocor is the name brand of what I take, simvastatin is the generic name, so I am taking the same thing.

I thought it might be but didn't check to make sure.  I remember chills in the extremities as being a side effect of one of the medications I am on, but can't find it now.....  I would check with the Doc though.

I'm trying to type with a 20+ lb. cat on my shoulder.... Manét has decided that is time that he gets his daily dose of cuddling.  I have about an hour and a half before I have to head out to the dentist and just got home from doing some shopping....  So I have to decide what is the best use of the remaining time.  I have to go to a Session (elders) meeting at church tonight as the Confirmation Class will be voted on by the members tonight so they can join the church.  They like to have the "guides" of the kids there as well.  So tonight is pretty much shot for doing anything with the layout.  This is always a joyous occasion so I am looking forward to it.

I wonder if the med is causing me to feel chilled??

I would get in touch either with your doctor or your pharmacist about the symptoms.  I know that can be a side effect of the simvastatin that I take for high cholesterol.  Best to make sure it is OK.....

Zocor is the name brand of what I take, simvastatin is the generic name, so I am taking the same thing. SO, if it's a side effect, I guess that would explain it. I looked it up online and found lots of info on side effects and interactions, but nothing that said feeling chilled was a side effect. I may also be coming down with something?? I will have to check with the Dr. I guess. I know my father had a cold feeling after he started his BP med. My other half, who is frequently cold anyway, may have to start such a cholesterol lowering med and I wonder if the side effect will be the same?

Jeffrey glad they have a handle on your father.

Have a nice afternoon gents

Just got news about my father. He may be coming home today or tomorrow. They finally figured out what he has. A nasty condition called diverticulitis. I've had it myself, hence why I know it's nasty.

Sounds like he found the road to recovery, so thats good!

Good to see folks popping back in now and then.

After reading about saved stuff, yeah I'm guilty too, I have an idea. A wheel manufacturer!!  I can use the bizillion wheel sets I have from when I changed out my Rivorossi Heavyweights eons ago.  Why I saved them???  Son of depression era parents of course!

Jim -  the chalks look good.  Can't wait for the ink wash!

Jeff - good to hear your dad's coming home, at least you know what he's dealing with.

Hey, Bama, good to see you in the DIner again (and congrats on the pending birth - hope you get that boy).Thumbs Up

Sorry, cars are looking good Jim are you sure this is your first attempt?

Todd - you have to bear in mind (as you probably can tell from the first photo) that these boxcars had been sitting a bit, so they got some 'natural' weathering (Is there 1:87th scale dust?) before I started any of my own on them. I would've liked being able to show the door detail a bit better, but maybe when I get some India ink wash on that, it may help. Robby? Suggestions?

Oh, Todd, congratulations on your lowering 'shtuff' level in the train room. There might be hope for both of our 'clutteredness' problems. I don't keep the wheels (well, haven't changed out much of any so far), but I need to toss the hornhook couplers that I have after replacing them with the KD's.

Well, back to my coffee and watching the switcher.

JR:

A full rebuild will also cure things but the RTR rebuilts are less expensive and less likely to develop issues. Even at a dealership it's tough to find someone with the skill to rebuild stuff and you end up changing assemblies instead. .
...have too replace the rear wiper motor and assembly on the 2003 Venture. Dealer cost $369, wrecker cost $125 used, $160 new after-market. Tell me again why GM is likely to file for Chapter 11? (Sorry if that's political - my badBlush)

Rant over, and a good day everyone. I'll have the remains of the shrimp curry for lunch please, with tea. Mashe dpotato instead of rice, as rice is too high on the glycemic index to do me much good.Sigh

Not much on the mrr front lately, too many chores and extras getting in the way.

Yep depression babies. But then why, oh why, when I change old plastic wheels (usually because something isn't right) Do I save them! I can't sem to throw them away!

Yeh, but that's different!  You know that it is a valid and important part of kitbashing and scratch building.  That's called "Be Prepared".  Sounds like a motto I know well..... WhistlingBig Smile
