Good evening,

JEFF: Very sorry to hear about your Mother... you know as well as anybody how serious her situation is. Know also there's a bunch of us here pulling for her, and hoping for the best possible outcome.

ROBBY P: Nice job on the hopper, especially the underside. You've got that rusty wheel spatter down to an artform. I'd be beside myself over the unemployment fiasco. I'm all for helping people in need of help...and I also believe in a "life happens" clause, especially for people trying to help themselves. I hope somebody can intercede on your behalf and get the BS straightened out. Crimeny Sakes, I hate buracracy/burecrats (sp.). I also hate system abusers...and you clearly ain't one of them! It boggles my mind after having seen so many career welfare recipients, people who have chosen to live off of others; get all the breaks. And then, a guy who is trying like heck to get things back on track, who is making an honest effort to improve his situation...to be dealt a bum hand by life...and get screwed by the system.

Brother, that ticks me off.

SAWYER: Looks like the 71% ETOH...I mean, alcohol, did the trick. I pretty much stick with good old brake fluid. Glad you lucked-out using the knife. I'm sure if I did that, I'd end up having to break out the Squadron Green Putty later. I might have missed it, but what are you going to use for an air supply on the new air brush? I gave up in disgust on the canned stuff. The results were too variable: It'd work GREAT one time, and be a sputtering disaster the next. I also found with the el-cheapo Testor's external mix brush, that the acrylic paints would clog up, dry out...just miserable. Give me the good toxic solvent-based paints!

We had our monthly fire meetings tonight (Fire Dept. business meeting followed by the Firefighter's Volunteer Association meeting). As has been the tradition, it was a supper meeting with fabulous pork chop sandwiches off the grillDinner. We also did the monthly truck checks, and had to don our dress shirts for a group photo and individual shots. Yippee. Group shot is going to the Iowa Firefighters' newspaper, the individual shots are to update a display that was put up about 15 years ago. Wednesday night we have a special training meeting with the ambulance, they're bringing in the helicopter ambulance and we have to land it. Our regular training meeting this month is JAWS Big Smile. Can't wait!

Not much else going on, so will yield the floor to any other night-hawks in the diner...

Best wishes for all in need...

Evening, Chloe, I'll have a small slice of the apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, and a CAW mug of your coffee, please. Thank you!

Todd, so long as I make sure I like how the chalks look on a car before I 'set' them with a spray of the Dullcoat or matte spray, should be okay. Kinda the weathering and spray equivalent of "Measure twice, cut once" rule, I suppose. Oh, and you need to up your dose of the ginko biloba...Whistling

Had a full lunch today - the secretary (excuse me, support staff) for our clinical director is leaving on Wednesday (moving back to her small town south of here) - not sure, but might be for financial or family reasons, but around here at w**k, information does not flow like a river on such things (or anything). But they had a potluck lunch to honor her (she's a real help whenever I've had to go to her for much of anything (notarizing documents for w**k, getting forms or info cards when I run out, etc.). And like all potluck dinners (this was a big enough meal to qualify), plenty of food. One hundred pieces of fried chicken, several delectable casseroles, some great crescent rolls, and plenty more where that came from! Dinner So I was too stuffed to eat anything in the Diner at lunchtime.

Jerry, good news on your leg. Take good care of it, and watch out for that dog if you have it over again! If your weather resembled Todd's at all, today was a good day for you to stay inside and get those hopper cars whipped into shape.

PC, sorry to hear you were cooped up inside today (like me). It got into the 90 F range, but since I had lunch inside (and then got busy with a teenager in crisis for a while), I never did get outside for lunch. Of course, since things were fairly slow otherwise, I didn't mind. Did some fiddling with finances during some of the slack time (trying to fine-tune how much actual flex I have in each of the month's paychecks, so I don't have any snug days like the past few. Did NOT like having to pass up using H-L's 40 percent off coupon. [pooh]Ashamed

Train club meeting tonight was kinda low on attendance. Ran a train of some longer cars around the layout (and found a turnout to the back staging yard where several cars wanted to derail themselves), and was getting frustrated with some of those long cars, which I think are just overly piculous about staying on the track through turnouts in general. Don't think I want to model the modern eras, for that reason too. (Rant over...)

Robby, that deal with the unemployment office about the job - well, it just plain sucks! If you worked at a job, they'd allow you family medical leave to help her out (most decent companies would, IMHO), yet the unemployment office is less humane than that. Thumbs Down Pffffftttt!!! on them! I would contact your area's Senator or Congressional Representative about helping you appeal that (especially if you have a good one - I know our local US Rep. here has a helpful office whose staff will do everything possible to see that you get a fair deal. Will add an 'attitude change' for the bureaucratic foul-up who doesn't think you need to be treated like a human being.... AngelAngel  By the way, that hopper car is nicely 'understated'. Good job (or are you planning on more to come for that?). I especially like the underside - you need a plexiglas track base and a mirror so people can see that!

BridgeTom - LOVE your sound man's reply! ROFLMAO!!Laugh Hey, on that screen door, that does sound a bit steep for the install. Will it keep the raccoons out, though? Wink Did your doctor say if (after your 'break-in' period on the medication) you will EVER again be able to eat your favorite foods (and beverage)? As I read earlier, "Getting old sucks" (or something close to that, I think).

Jeff- sorry to hear about your mother's stroke. Praying for her now (and continuing). Let us know once you know any more details on her progress. After she gets better and out of the hospital, I'd be interested in your take on those rail-weathering markers. I have a set I bought, but haven't got to trying them out just yet.

Barry, if you keep at 'em, you'll get all those wheelsets done and changed out. Steady as she goes, and the saying is...

I'll be finishing up my PIE and heading for home before the catapult comes out again. I like my pie in my mouth, nice and tasy, rather than all over the walls, thankyouverymuch!

Prayers for Jeff's Mom and any and all others in need of healing, comfort or strengthening. Jeff, take care of yourself in the meantime, okay? I'll check back in the morning.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Jeff, what bones do they want to remove from your foot? The Doc would have to really sell it to me to get me to do it, or the benefit would have to be substantial.  Don't take me the wrong way its your foot and I’m no doctor, but I hope it all works out for you.

He won't be removing entire bones, just shaving some bone off the one causing the problem.

Bad news on the home front today. My mother had a stroke this afternoon while I was gone to Alexandria. My father found her on the back porch and called 911. She was transported by ambulance to Byrd ER where they stabilized her and got her ready for transfer to Rapides General in Alexandria. She's in transit at this time. At the moment she's unresponsive and is on a ventilator. My sister and I went to the ER in her car. She's taking my father to Rapides General. I brought my parents car home and am now awaiting word on my mother's condition.

On a positive note I raided Hobby Lobby today. I picked up two new covered hoppers (I really like those things for some reason), two tubes of Testor's cement (red tube, the blue tube stuff is crap), two bottles of Model Master flat black paint, a set of three rail color paint markers (rail brown, rail tie brown, rust), a pack of 6 white background Testor's decal sheets, a tube of Testor's contour putty and a can of Testor's decal bonder spray.

so grabebd my hobby knife and put barely any pressure on it, it's been working fine so far.

Soft steel wool might be just as effective, but run less risk of damage.

I don't use steel wool on ANYTHING that will be going on the layout. Been there and done that.

Evening all. Chloe, I'll take a RBF, thanks.

Not much new to report, other than applying the patches to my new geep, deciding on a decoder (NCE D13SR) for said geep, and considering changing the layout of my layout.

I'm really tired, so I'll talk more and post pictures tomorrow.Zzz

G'night all. See ya tamarro.

I'll have an Arnold Palmer please.

Tom, it's funny that you mention mineral red with a silver roof. I was on Trainweb.org last night nosing around and discovered that I really liked the colors of NS business cars. I'm definatly going to go with the red body and silver roof. I just wish had room to build a layout but until I get into bigger quarters I'm going to occupy my time with building kits.

My goal is to have all the trains I need to run my railroad with enough building kits in standby so tha when I retire from the Navy I can get started on my dream layout and hopefully that will carry me through until I go to qualify ships on that big submarine in the sky.

I'm planning on taking my time with the Great Western and enjoying it. I'm going to post later on what all I envision for the GW. Well I guess I should get back to work. Catch ya'll later.

Tried that old toothbrush on my factory-painted models today, worked like a charm. the paint i was using my hobby knife on was full strength stuck on chips of polly scale and testors paint.

I have suggested she use a good set of headphones for her to hear the mix rather than just blast it into the room to destroy both her and the kids hearing.....Whistling  Not to mention the instant feedback........Wink

That works for me!! I would have a whale of a time trying to pick out anything in a room without those headphones!---and don't bother with the feedback. We USED feedback for some of our pieces--me doing a duet with the amps and things, we were pretty wild---yep---Whistling---actually I'm kind of surprised my hearing--when I last got it checked, last year--was/is still good. Mind I did use earplugs sometimes as I found that I could isolate the sound better---Whistling Just don't play at 130db

Hello.......I'll have an RBL and a SRP w/FVIC.

We just returned from our journey to Nashville. It was an opportunity for me to bother the in-laws again.

Bridge Diesel Tom..... I liked your "Prospector" with DIESELS in your post in WPF! BowSmile,Wink, & Grin

You were talking about the Rio Grande paint scheme such as the one that Jeff "patched" for his railroad. I recall seeing them in years past pooled with SP units in Colorado. It was almost impossible to tell if a unit was SP or Rio Grande because both railroads rarely washed the locomotives. They were both "Soot Black". They were almost as ugly as some of those steam locomotives. (Especially Berkshires......Trying to wake up Duke!)

Happy Model Railroading!

Sawyer--How long did you leave them in for? They look pretty well cleaned off--Smile,Wink, & Grin

Thanks robby!

Barry, I both used my thumbnail and my hobby knife to scrape stubborn paint off. my GP9 barely soaked, but it has been for a while now, so should be easier to get the paint off.

Sawyer: Substitute the knife with a toothbrush, either a plastic one you can scrape with the edge of either end, or one with the tongue cleaner. If your dentist is like mine, yuo likely have them out your ears and won't miss one. The Knife can (I've done it) knick the shell. (Whoops! And you get a nice gash on the loke)

I've tried an old toothbrush, it absolutely did not do the job, so grabebd my hobby knife and put barely any pressure on it, it's been working fine so far.

Lee- yes, the rear unit is a FM H-15-44. In order from the front, they are a GP35, GP30, H-15-44.

Todd-I wish i had seen that $20 harbor freight airbrush, lol! oh well, I think the Badger 250 will be fine for me.

Ray:  How big is the room?    The sound man and I tried to explain to her that with my 6-foot Steinway and Stephanie's rather powerful voice, all we'd need is probably one mike, but she wouldn't hear of it.   Finally, when the whole place was miked to the max, she looked at the sound man and said, "Well, do you think it's sufficient?"  the sound man, who was a very neat character, looked back at her and said, "Yes, if you want to hear Gnat's farting."   I fell off of the piano bench.

Love it!  Actually I would have used just 2.  A nice large diaphragm condenser (like the Shure KSM 27) on the piano and a Sennhieser vocal mic on her.........  Anything more is just putting "dirt" into the system and can really mess up the sound.

Actually right now she is setting this up in her rehearsal room (I'm thinking somewhere around 20' x 20' or a bit larger) for the kids to practice using the mics.  They ultimately will be performing at Graduation on the stage of the Smith Opera House hear in Geneva.  Huge old theater with wonderful acoustics (and a bear to do sound in...).  She wants to teach the students how to use the mics effectively and be able to put different combinations of students together on the mics.  Her reasoning is sound and hopefully will make my job as a deaf sound man easier when we get to the Smith.  I have suggested she use a good set of headphones for her to hear the mix rather than just blast it into the room to destroy both her and the kids hearing.....Whistling  Not to mention the instant feedback........Wink

Good luck with the door Tom.  LOL, I had a music music teacher like that.  At ANY performance we did, there had to be at least 500 mikes (exaggeration, but you get the point).  And if there weren't enough, we'd delay our performance until a sufficient number could be had.  With me being one of the few tech-savvy performers, we knew that we could easily get away with maybe 4 mikes at ANY show we did, but still....she had to have her way.....

Morning all from CloudyCal.  Yup, we've got a low-pressure system off of the Coast that's spinning around, and we're due to have rain by tomorrow.  Well, I've always said that if you don't like the weather here in Carmichael, wait five minutes, LOL!

Waiting for Lowe's to deliver a new screen door--decided to get one of those outside frame security type things--with Spooky and Uff-Dah bouncing around, the old screen door has just about had it.  Not that they TRY and get out--they know what happens to their position on the old Food Chain if they do, LOL!   But those cheap $35 screen doors just dont seem to like to last around here.   So I get to spend the afternoon installing it, assuming I can find my drill and my power screwdriver.  Either that or pay Lowes around $200 to install it.  Heck, the door only cost $85, for cryin' out loud!  Shock

My doctor put me on Lomotil for my tummy troubles, and so far it's working like a charm.  But no steaks, salads, pizza, tacos or all the other stuff I love for at least another 2 weeks.  Yuk!   I asked him about fried chicken, he just stared at me.  "What do you mean, FRIED?"   But at least the Lomotil allows me to get a little further than 20 feet from the bathroom, so whatever works, I'll do it. Tongue

Ray:  How big is the room?   I had a choral director like that when I taught at St. Francis.  She was of the opinion that nobody could EVER be heard unless they were miked to death.  I remember one girl I was accompanying who had an absolutely HEAVENLY mezzo-soprano voice (she went on to the opera program at UCLA and is now getting her Master's at Boston Conservatory), and while we were rehearsing in an acoustically perfect recital auditorium at the school, the director was madly directing the poor sound man to put mikes in every little nook and cranny. The Director was not amused.  But we were, LOL!  Sometimes you just have to go with the flow, even if you ARE the expert (he said with a sigh).

Nothing much on the MR front, until I get the door delivered.  I found out that one othe "Prospector's" Pullmans developed a real hitch in its 'gitalong', suddenly.  I mean, derailing on a piece of STRAIGHT track is a little odd, at least to me.  Found out that the trucks were hanging up on the skirting AND those two little lighting tabs on the underframe.  Did some major surgery and it seems to be behaving itself.  You'd think that at almost $50 a shot, those cars would have been assembled a little more carefully (he said, mutter, grumble).   But they look very neat, so I can put up with minor glitches.  Besides, I've never bought a RTR car that didn't have to be tweaked.

The truck from Lowe's just pulled up outside, so time to install the door.  I KNOW that drill is out in the garage, somewhere. Whistling

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Barry, I’m using a 110v instant air compressor large enough to fill car tires, but I have a inline regulator to adjust the PSI going to the airbrush. “Instant air” as apposed to a compressor with a tank because the tank can accumulate condensation, condensation is bad for spray painting (splatters dribble, ect…).  Anyway you can find these air compressors fairly cheap at a garage sale for less than $50.  Those air brush compressors typically run over $200 and won’t even fill a tire, LOL.

I don’t remember what Badger I got it was on sale %60 off at Hobby Town.  Since I have the inline regulator I was able to buy a single stage air brush and save some money.

I do remember the cans would not maintain a constant air pressure over time.

Robby, again very nice job on that covered hopper!

Todd, yes that’s what I meant but also the bottles wear out or get broken then you’re out of luck.

Give me a sweet tea, and some headache meds.  Its been one of those days Banged Head.  To sum up that story, here's a quick run by...........

Got called about a job (a few weeks ago), but I told them the wife has to have surgery/doc visits.  They said ok (temp place).  Got a letter two weeks ago about my unemployment.  The state wants to know why I didn't take the job.  I told them why.  Got a letter today saying...........The state wants by $730, and I don't have unemployment anymore.

Now the wife and I are all tore up.  I don't wanna get on a "soap box", but it makes me wonder what have we done to deserve this.  The last couple of weeks have been Dead (that sums it up).  So now we will have to see what we need to do.

ANYWAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's some shots of the hopper I've been working on.   Wish I could me some decent money on "the bay" and I wouldn't have to worry.

Todd, the Harbor Freight $20 airbrushes (centaury tools?) are great air brushes but they use a non-standard bottle.  I spent the extra $20 on a Badger so I could use the popular bottles.

I'm thinking of taking it the extra step and just going and getting/finding a compressor. I'm using bottles now but I'm finding some that aren't all that good when it comes to maintaining constant pressure Then i get splatters or dribble effects or some other quibble. Which Badger did you get?

Good Midday diners!  Well, the weekend held much for me.  I got to get the shower/tub surround installed at our house.  The wife got sent to the day spa (told her to treat herself, besides, she hasn't done much for herself recently).  Went and saw Night At the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, and I'll have to say that movie was HILARIOUS!  I almost rolled on the floor in the literal sense a few times.  Other than that, I did go swimming at our pastor's pool Sunday afternoon, that was a blast.  Got to goof off and played a little "tackle a guy into the pool" (don't ask).  Other than that I spent the weekend resting up.

I'll have a RBF, along with a hot ham and cheese with an order of fries please ma'am.  I have been thinking about my rolling stock recently and I'm wondering what I can do about the wheel/trucksets on mine, I've got some cars that are fairly recent cars, but they're running on old journal box trucks, so I guess that I just need to get some modern trucksets and replace them.  Especially since my modelled time period is "today"

So much for the weather guys guess at 76F outside today, it’s 56F and raining now.

Todd, the Harbor Freight $20 airbrushes (centaury tools?) are great air brushes but they use a non-standard bottle.  I spent the extra $20 on a Badger so I could use the popular bottles.

Yea I know I set precedence on going to the movies, but in my defense this was the first time in a while there was two decent movies playing in the same month.

Jeff, what bones do they want to remove from your foot? The Doc would have to really sell it to me to get me to do it, or the benefit would have to be substantial.  Don't take me the wrong way its your foot and I’m no doctor, but I hope it all works out for you.

Ray- Sign - Welcome To the diner, have breakfast on me and tell us a bit about yourself. Luckily my memory is doing well, but like Todd my brain is so full of stuff everytime it takes a while to find it. I have recall, it's just not instant.

Jim- Not to butt in but...I've heard the same thing about the chalks. I haven't tried them yet so I'll be experimenting also. Problem is once the Dull-Cote is applied there is no going back so to speak.

Todd- Good luck with the airbrush purchase I hope it does well. And that moose salute was silly.

Good Morning, Zoe - I'll have a #2 special, scrambled, wheat toast with blackberry jam (yum!), glass of Ed's OJ, and a cup of coffee in a Santa Fe mug, please 'n' thankyouma'am!

Had a little trouble getting to the posting page, but not sure if that was the forum software or our connection at w**k. It's working now, and that's the important thing, right?

Morgan, good job on the paint stripping. Thumbs Up Looks like the 70 percent does its stuff fine!

Barry, I think it's okay to take a break after all 55 of those wheelsets. Last Monday, I was getting tired after about 4 sets on some club cars (and, we ran out of replacement wheels). Got to pace yourself, so you don't run out of things to do next weekend, right? WhistlingSmile,Wink, & Grin

Lee, there ya go - take Dorothy to the movie two weekends in a row, and you have set what we call a 'precedent'... Are there more movies good enough to go see? I haven't been keeping up with what's on at the theatres (other than our one cineplex that puts the titles out front doesn't have anything interesting to me).Hey, good idea on the flowerbeds (crowding out the weeds). Now, if only I could get something to grow (and continue to grow) in the big clay pot out on my deck..

Jason, I don't think you could go wrong with either the Mineral Red or the Pullman Green (with the silver roof). I know that the Santa Fe heavyweights in the 1950's used the silver roofs on their green ones, FWIW. Besides, it's your RR, right? As for Firefox, I use it 99 percent of the time on my Macs (Safari the other 1 percent).

Okay, Todd, now that I've done the "Moose Salute", can I start on my breakfast? Wink Let's see if that jars our missing Diners into coming back. Wink Thanks for the suggestion on the weathering. I had heard that when you spray over the chalks, they tend to disappear (to some degree), but can somebody tell me about how much does that amount to?

Today would be a good day for getting outside, if that's where PC is. Cool Get a good breeze across ya - with the temps supposed to hit 90 (F) today, any breeze will be welcome. Yeah!! Glad we have the A/C at w**k today.

I'll join Barry at the corner booth with my breakfast.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Mornin' everyone!

Another cool, cloudy day here in the Finger Lakes. Currently 55°F with a high of 66°F this afternoon.  Looks like some showers may come this way as well in the afternoon.

I have to get going and go set up a small mixer and some mics for the High School Choral director to use for practice.

Last night I started to watch a movie I've been wanting to see for a while now, The DaVinci Code. After a few minutes I realized, I'd already seen it. I watched some of it then fell asleep, the problem is I couldn't remember what was going to happen so I assumed I'd only seen up to a point. But I kept seeing things I'd seen before, so now, I still don't know if I've seen the whole thing. Laugh Ah a day in my life is always an adventure. Even if I've done it before.

Todd you may have that disease, ah, you know, What's his Names Disease.  Al somebody.  The best part of the disease is that you get to meet so many new people every day.  Your wife, your children, your doctor, the nurses, etc........Whistling  No I sure hope you don't have that one! Probably just Deja Vous all over again.

Ah, Flo, my coffee!  Just in time, I was about ready to doze off here again.

Later folks!

BTW, where is PC?  Has he gone among the missing?  Hopefully just out riding those sweet wheels he got.

Oh, and didn't Dr Strangelove have something of the same issue?

Ya know, I see so many movies,( mostly on TV because of the cost of an evening at the movie house and I don't think they clean the seats of the place any better than the floor), I come in after the begining many times and never know what the name of the movie is or just plain forget. I usually remember scenes and stuff but the names, nope, not a clue. Last night I started to watch a movie I've been wanting to see for a while now, The DaVinci Code. After a few minutes I realized, I'd already seen it. I watched some of it then fell asleep, the problem is I couldn't remember what was going to happen so I assumed I'd only seen up to a point. Boy we've got some talent on this forum and in this diner. WPF is outstanding AGAIN!! Bow
