I'd like to get ether DSL or cable but they are not available in the sticks. Also the price is more than I'd feel comfortable with right now. PeoplePC is suposed to have a faster speed system but when I talked to the phone repair man a couple of weeks ago he said that there was a "chock" in the line and he was supprised that I was getting what I was 26.4kps to 28.8kps.

Hey Paul .Those speeds are waaaaay tooo slow.A couple things come to mind about your problem.
1. What speed is yoour modem
2. How old is the wiring in your house.
3.Check at the main box if you have any loose connections.Sometimes all you need to do is  tighten down the connections
4a.Do you ever have any static  on the line?(it sounds like fried bacon and will come and go)                 4b. Do you ever have a hum on the line?   (after it rains)
5.Check at the jack. Sometimes the jack has tarnish on the little gold connectors inside where you plug the cord into.
6. Last resort and  I mean the last resort  Call the phone company to check the line.They will check it for free (from their end not yours)
 If you live in the sticks most phone companies dont want to spend the money to upgrade their systems. Any one of these can cause your dial up to be slow.

One of my forum members with dial-up gets faster than that, on the order of 46 kbps

He might *connect* at 46-odd kbps, but real sustained speeds are in the range of 16-24.  thats why a dialup modem can only download at about 1-3 KB/s. Also, thats why cable/dsl advertise in the manner "speeds of up to XX mb/s" - because real-world sustained speeds are generally much lower.

1 Byte (shortened B) is 8 bits (shortened b)

you can apply this upwards in the scale as well.  ANYTHING with lowercase letters for data amount generally refer to "bits" and uppercase letters generally refer to "bytes"

100 kbps (kb/s) = 100 kilobits per second
100 KBps (KB/s) = 100 kiloBYTES per second

most notable place for this is in the internet - most everything (when sold to comsumers) is in kilobits/megabits per second, though when you're downloading something, the transfer speed is shown in kilobytes per second.

yep, i have one all day every day for 9 months.  It was SWEET over the summer when I was one of like 100 student-age people here.  I had sustained downloads of ~8MB/sec.

Definately not fast compared to you guys, althought it's a heck of a lot better than the dial up I used to have!

Hey guys, and yes it is the same old Noah, back from the (seemingly) dead. I've been keeping an eye on the forums every once and a while, but I haven't had a whole lot of a chance to post. But I've got a four day weekend starting tomorrow, so I've got a lot of time now! I'm going to probably put a little time into the layout though, so I still won't be on here all the time or anything. But I'll definately stop in a little more, and if I've got any progress photos or anything worth posting, I will.

Evening Gang: Yup, I'm back on line. I haven't got the slightest idea why or what happened. I just thought I'd give it a try and here I am.

Speed tonight is 26.4. I couldn't say anything about that other stuff you all are talking about.

Dan, I have a dedicated line to the phone box so no other stuff on it. I buy passed every thing else earlyer this year when I had phone trouble. The phone co. service guy came out a couple of weeks ago because the county destroyed my J box down at the road. He checked the lines before he left and everything was good. There is no static on the line. As I said he said that he was surprised that I was getting the speed that I was. I'm not a conputer literate type so anything but the basics and I do mean basics is beyond me.

Inch: Give the fallen honors from me please. I'd be there if I could.

Well I'm going tohit the sack. With any kind of luck I'll check in tomorrow evening.

Download: how fast (in kilobits per second) you can get information from a server.
Upload: how fast (in kilobits per second) you can send something to another computer.
Latency: the amount of time(in milliseconds) it takes for a single packet of data to get from your computer, to a server, and back (generally this is done 4 times, then averaged)

Conversions
These are generally used in transmission calculations:
1 bit (b)= 1/8 of a byte(B)
1 kilobit (kb) = 1000 bits*
1 megabit (mb) =1000 kb*
1 gigabit (gb) = 1000 mb*

You might be a little more familiar with these:
1 byte (B) = 8 bits (b) (A single character)
1 kilobyte (KB) = 1000 bytes*
1 megabyte (MB) = 1000 KB*
1 gigabyte (GB) = 1000 MB*

* the "true" (binary) size "steps" are 2^10 (1024) , but using decimal (10^3 = 1000) is easier for people to figure out (hency why you "lose" space on a harddrive - comuters figure space by binary, but they're marketed in the decimal)

Mornin all, an irish coffee please Zoe,
Had a long evening and a short night, got home bout midnight from Casey. Wasn't as many people there as when chuck was killed, but the weather and it beenin so late lowered the turn out. There had been sprinkles all evening and it quite will we were out. Bout the time motorcade  came into view, we heard a lonely train whistle in the distance.
  I had only meet him once, thats when we delivered their wedding cake, but we know his wife's sister and BIL well.

 LCpl Hines left behind a wife and 2 month old son, that he had never saw. This young Marine shall be remmeber with honors.

Going to be a long day here, got 3 kids and rain. It's always long when the kids are stuck inside. Maybe I can get J Bird n KC to take a napp at the same time after Leroy goes to school. Well a feller can always dream can't he. Catch ya'll laters need to get ta chores.

Good Morning All,

   Chilly and overcast this morning. Waiting on a transport service to arrive and pick up an AC Bristol to go to Florida for the winter.Shop work proceeds as normal and a chill is definitely in the air. Summer must be gone.

   Worked on the HO display at the museum Tues nite, they now have me painting the backdrop and i finished that up and started on the conversion of some donated building flats which we rearranged to go on the edge of the yard (the main focus of the display). The buildings were all kitbashed from DPM bits which I have never worked with. Nice stuff though and the detail around the windows is great. The tough part will be getting the paint and weathering to match well enough to be believeable as at least the continuation of an existing structure. I like a challange.

   Inch - Thats a sad reason to go to Casey. We vets have probably already been in this situation, but it doesn't make things any easier. My sympathies to you and our prayers for his family and loved ones. I'd feel better about the sacrifice we're making if I thought the people we're fighting for had any appreciation of it. More and more I get the feeling the Iraqi's are just bidding time until we leave and can then get on with slaughtering each other.

   I'm not worried about computer speed and bits per second as long as these infernal things actually work. This site is easy and user friendly, but the New Haven web site has been a constant source of fustration as I just can't seem to log on no matter what I try.

Good Morning All, I got a real kick out of that spanish lesson and I have to agree with the woman's assesment of ths situation with computers. As for all that stuff with bithdays My son was born on the 13th but that's no big deal my sister has this subject in the bag all of her children (she has 3) are 6 years, 2 months and 4 days apart, don't know how she did it but it is interesting.

I managed to get a little bit done on the layout, There is an area near me that I have always liked so I took some pics and am now working on scatch building some brick store fronts and factory buildings that are alone the track. It sould look good once I finish and get them placed. Please don't ask me to post pics because I have the dreaded dial-up and I have no patience when it comes to up-loading the pics. Some day I may be able to convince my husband to get DSL or cable but...

Inch, I am sorry for all the troubles that you have been going through and be assured you are in my prayers.
