With the Coast Guard we used to go out and around Sable Island. Once we were out on Sable Island delivering supplies. We could not dock the boat because of the high waves. There was a bunch of men fishing for mackerel. I went up to look over the side of the ship and I got sea-sick. One engineer, I used to call him Uncle Doug, asked me if I wanted a cure for sea-sickness, I said yes. He said you will never get sea-sick again. He said, take one of the mackerel, still alive, and rip out the heart. Give it a little wash, put it in your mouth and swallow it, do not chew it. I could feel it moving all the way down into my stomach. I felt better so I took another one. I never got sick again. Even to this day, I never get sick.

Our New Years day Dinner has been BBQ'd Arctic Char for the last seven years. It will be delayed this year as I'll be at sea until the beginning of January.

Good Mornin' Everybody,
It's a frosty morning in the mountains today. We were well down in the 20's this morning but it's going to be another glorious day. we've not a cloud anywhere to be seen, bright sunshine, it's going to be a great day.

Shawna's meeting with the Dean went well. She's going to drop the one class. It will go on her transcript as withdrew due to medical reasons - passing, which is fine. There is no problem at all with her staying in the dorm for the rest of the semester. The dean was much more concerned with Shawna not overtaxing herself and really getting well than anything else. We really couldn't ask for more. As always, thank you all very much for your concern, thoughts and prayers. they surely have helped and we all really appreciate them.

Der, the Branchline coaches do have diaphrams. They look good, but are fairly stiff. I inset the coupler mounting on two cars 3/32" each and test ran them yesterday. That moves the two cars 3/16" closer and they worked fine. I think I can tighten them up another 1/32" each with no problems. That would move the cars 1/4" closer together which isn't quite close enough to really be prototypical but I don't think my 24" radius curves will allow more.

Big Boy, I'm glad you enjoyed the operating session. I haven't tried that yet, but I'm looking forward to trying one. I'm glad to hear that it came back quickly.

Lupo, global communication is a really cool thing, in lots of ways. What did you and Bill find at the train show?

Ed, I'm really glad that another space for the Christmas tree has been found. That's outstanding. Sorry to hear about the guage problem with the 2-8-0. I think sending it back for repair is probably wise. Requartering drivers is not something I've tried, and not something I'd look forward to.

Noah, It's interesting how theme songs and other music can stick in your mind. There are lots of songs from years ago that I can recognize with just a couple of notes and be singing along. " I Can Name That Tune In Two Notes". " Name That Tune" was a really popular TV show in the '50s. I'll bet a lot of the older folks here in the coffee shop remember it.

Fergie, I'm glad that Lisa's back is getting better. Holding them back when they start to feel a little better and the sense of duty ( I could and I really should....) kicks in is a real challenge. Hopefully she will take it easy enough so as not to reinjure it or slow her recovery.

Teffy, the Ps-4 is absolutely beautiful. Looks like they did a fine job. That is surely one of the prettiest steam locomotives any body ever built. The green and gold passenger scheme just finishes it perfectly.

Aggro, welcome back to the coffee shop. I'm glad you got your computer problems resolved. I must disagree though. What we really need BLI to do is an accurate Southern Railway Ps-4 in green and gold.

Well Pacific Salmon or Atlantic Salmon, I'll be glad to judge the cookoff boys. [dinner] Either one is far superior to Gulf of Mexico Salmon, which is, how shall I say, nonexistant. [:(]

The last couple of years I was working we had a project up in Washington State between Seattle and the border. I got to fly up there every couple of months. I'll guarantee I chowed down on salmon and Dungeness crab every chance I got.

While we have decent seafood down here, in my mind it's not as good as cold water fish. Whether you're talking oysters, shrimp, lobster, salmon, halibut, or whatever, I think cold water fish just have more flavor.

Isn't it a bit early to be thinking about dinner? I'm here with my first cup of coffee.


Hello, Aggro. Nice to see you over here in the Coffee Shop. I've got to admit those BLI locos sure look good. There have been recent rumors that they may enter the Normal scale market also. But I suspect their prices put those locos a bit out of my range.

It ain't as good as Atlantic Salmon!!!!! Ask Teffy

All you need is Italian Dressing (1 cup) a few sprigs of Rosemary, a dash of basil, oregano and thyme and a table spoon of Basmalic vinegar (optional) and let the fillets or steaks sit in it for about one to two hours, flip occassionaly and then when you're ready fire up the BBQ, heat to high then 12 to 18 minutes depending on BTU and thickness.[:p] Then it's [dinner]

A nice caeser or spinach salad and a side plate of rice pilaf.

Arctic Char can also be done in this manner.

Ed: Lisa never made it, it's getting better but..... Factoid: 40% of all work place injuries are back related. go figure.

Saturday morning I'll have to help one of my dad's friends load them on a truck and take them somewhere out of the way.

And in Industrial ed. class we are building CO2 powered drag racers--CB&Q Truck Lines may end up being the "sponser" of mine....[:p]

Good to hear from you again JP, thought you had gone awol on us. Yeah, Fran has been more than supportive of my addiction hobby. But when you finally finish catching up on posts you'll see that we may have some movement on that front at her own suggestion!!

Ferg, good to hear that Lisa feels good enough to go back to work, even if it is too early. That's a definite improvement in the situation.


I think I'm going to have to post more often. Waiting a day or so between posts winds up with me writing an epic instead of a simple post.

Well today was a bit of a different one. Lisa is now saying she wants to go to work tomorrow, though I think it's premature, what do I know!? Tried to fix the Clothes drier for $150. Unfortunately I cracked of a heating coil insulator bracket off, which of course means a cross town trip to the place I was already at today[|(]

But I did make to the LHS in HFX and looked at a BLI CRRNJ "Mike" Mmmmmmm also got a good price on a Spectrum 2-6-6-2. Decisions, decisions, decisions. Any thoughts?

I also found a local source for Digitrax decoders. prices are 10% higher then Loy's but I wouldn't have to wait 4 to 6 weeks for delivery.

But the Big news is I actually got some quality time in an the RR! got some scenery done so hopefully I'll get some painting done tomorrow if the shell is dry.

Thanks, I couldn't even convince AJ to disemenate it for $10. I'm now on page 10.

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers

Decent day down here in sunny Mexico [8D] . Daytime temps are back up in the high 80’s, air conditioning is back on.

I thought I ought to bring you up to date on the investigation into my track/engine operation. After a lot more running and scratching of the head, it looks to me like my main problem isn’t the trackwork at all, but an engine with too narrow wheels! [:0] Up until recently I had only been able to run my engines on a small test oval, no problems there. But my favorite steamer, my Spectrum 2-8-0 showed severe bouncing and derailing on the switches on the layout. [:(] I went and ran most of my diesels with no problems (okay, the SD70MAC doesn’t like a couple of spots but the 4 axle diesels are fine). Then ran the Kato Mikado and the MDC 2-8-0, also without significant problems. So I finally took the NMRA gauge to the wheels and discovered that most of the axles, including pilot truck, 2 of the 4 drive axles, and all axles on the tender were too narrow! I’m convinced that this was the cause of the majority of the problems. So the Consolidation is taking a journey, care of the USPS, back to Bachmann for rework.

I’m also doing the happy dance about location of Christmas tree. [:D] Fran suggested that we ought to leave the trains alone (gotta love that gal) and rearrange furniture elsewhere for the tree! Turns out if we mess around and put the loveseat up against the bookcase and the easy chair against the stereo, we can probably fit the tree in the living room. This works out better all around for the whole family.

Well my Giants took it in the ear yesterday. Against the Bears, no less. We’ll see how Elliot’s Vikings do against the Colts tonight. Or we will if the cable signal comes back on. Guess Brett and the Pack had a bye week.


Speaking of Christmas and trees……..Yeah, Jim, an N scale circle of track, with an engine and a couple of cars would be great under a small tree. Don’t know if you have time to go to a train show or swap meet. What you need are an old engine and a couple of beater hopper cars that you can paint up in gaudy green and red. Stick in a bunch of Christmas candy and you’re off to the races. If you really want passenger cars, go for the MDC/Roundhouse old time shorties. Nothing else will look good on a small loop. Or go for open gondolas that you can fill with candy at Christmas and put bench seating in for your amusement park. There were a lot of LifeLike GP-38’s dumped on the market last year when a large mail order hobby shop closed out it’s railroad inventory. A lot of them are showing up on ebay for +/- $20. It would do fine for what you need.

Fergie, I hope Lisa is making at least some improvement with her back. That’s got to be a real bother.

Wonder how Tom’s daughter made out today in her meetings at school. Haven’t heard from him so I hope he didn’t have to drive down there and get involved.

I had hoped to go train shopping Sunday afternoon but taking photos of the River Rail streetcar and railfanning sidetracked me. [;)] (Get it? lol) Therefore I am still looking for a tabletop N scale layout. I think, if possible, I really want something in a passenger train so I can also use it as an amusement park type train on the HO layout.
If anyone "finds" anything like this let me know. It is almost 7 pm and bedtime fast approaches, so that makes it hard to check out things and take care of business.

I had a 8x10 drawing of one of those when I was 10. I thought it was the best thing thing going but at 10 one couldn't afford brass and none of the plastic model companies made them. Gorgeous Model sir, I'm truly impressed.
