Yeah, I know. I thought I was going to get one of those (based on your recommendation) when we went to Houston in the spring. Turns out the LHS didn’t have it in stock as they thought they had. Maybe this fall.
In the stores we get very small and ridiculously priced, up to larger and better value, but they all seem to be a similar breed. My mother (who spent some time in OZ before WWII) held that the only way to eat mango was in the bath!
Local mangos on sale by the roadside out near our orange grove are running about $5 for a crate that contains between 15-20 kgs. Obviously they charge more in the stores, but not that much.
Fran and Junior get a kick out of seeing me peel and eat a mango with a knife and fork. They’re both from the “eat it with your hands and get it all over yourself” school of mango eating.

Well, I've been out for a couple of days, so let me catch you all up to speed. OK, about this weekend,....what a weekend! Saturday morning I woke up hours before the family as usual. After prayers and Bible reading I set out with camera in hand to see what was going on. I knew the fair train was running, so I had that going for me. Deciding that the fair train would be a good place to start I headed down the tracks from my house about a mile and a half.Now let me explain a little. They bring out some cool equipment for this and I thought I'd share some of it with you. The trackage is all old NKP rails. I'm not sure who owns them now, I think maybe NS. Anyways, the mueum is the only one who ever uses them, from the fairgrounds on up about 50 miles up the line to the north. The museum also maintains them.
I did notice that Ed was buying, but I figured with all the vacationing he's been doing that his bank account might be getting down there so I thought I'd take it easy on him.

Good Day all!
We had a great weekend and just did not want it to end, but then you got to pay the bills!
Worked in the yard and picked about 3 pints of cherry and grape tomatoes from the garden. The grape variety are sweeter than the regular cherry, they are all so good though.
We re-arranged our living room and created a better arrangement for watching TV so we could all have a “good” seat.
Ran the usual Wal-Mart trip too, getting supplied up for the week ahead.
Saturday I made a great shrimp recipe; Garlic Herb Broiled Shrimp, and was it tasty. I used some fresh purple rose garlic, fresh basil, thyme, rosemary, and sage from the garden. Chopped all the garlic and herbs and mix them with a stick of melted butter and a ½ cup of olive oil. Then I tossed 2 lbs. of shrimp in with the butter mixture, added some garlic salt and Emeril’s Original spice mix, and some fresh ground black pepper, and then dumped it all out onto a sheet pan, broiled for about 10 minutes and served it with some Brussels sprouts and fresh peas. YUM!
Spent a few hours at the Y on Sunday afternoon, Ben and I ran on the treadmills for 15 minutes and got a little over a mile run in, and then we played racquetball for an hour and then we went to the pool to cool down and met Monique the “Sun Worshiper”, can you say SPF 50? The day could not have been nicer, temps in the mid 70’s, sunny to partly cloudy, and the pool water temp was refreshing and invigorating.
Lisa, you are doing a great job on your layout, getting in daily activity is great!
Hey Duke, yep I like to use them fancy tools to help me get er done! And your racquetball skills must be way over the top! I cannot even imagine being about to fit in that much time into playing, Ben and I reserve a court about 2 – 3 times a week one hour each time. I am wiped out after each one too!Looking forward to Apex, can you send me a PM with the details, date, location, etc…
Welcome back Ed! Now the OJ supply here in the CS will get somewhat back to normal. And getting used to the new forum takes a bit more patience that most of us care too… I have a similar forum issue too! Sometimes it take me three or four times to get my post the way I want it to look.

Jim I started the benchwork in May and have been trying to make a little progress each week. The past week has been slow though and I have reached a point that requires more thinking it through before I proceed. There is a window in the next wall and I am sorting through all the options, I wanted to work on it this weekend, but the weather was so nice I could not keep myself indoors for vary long. Good luck with the finances and prayers are with you.

Dick: You mentioned that you were afraid that the Mango trees would get big and shade the Orange trees,, so why not plant the Mango trees along the NORTH side of your property?? No shade problems then.
Interesting thought. But you forget that we're down here below the "Tropic of Cancer". So in the summer the sun passes far enough north that it's actually to the north of us for several months, then straight overhead, then back to the south. We have planted most of the mangos along one edge of the grove so that the impact is minimized. We'll wait and see how things develop as they grow.
By the way, having the sun to your north, or directly overhead, at noon really screws things up when you're trying to figure out directions.

Der, been there done that with the railzap stuff, same outcome made it worse then better. You'll notice a big improvement with metal wheel sets.

Ed, yep, that is the infamous transfer caboose. It doesn’t run much on the layout because the extra weight (stacks of glued pennies) is accidentally all to one side, and so it leans. But I use it as a photo prop quite a bit. One of these days I’ll get the caboose cabin off of the base and re-center the weight. I purposefully only used some tack stuff from Woodland Scenics to secure it so I could do that if necessary. Problem is there are some detail parts that are glued down that have to be removed too, and so that’s why I haven’t gotten around to it. It’ll get done.....someday.
Happy Jack, We’re trying to get in to Trainfest this year, but it’s not looking good so far. We’ve been submitting a application of interest to the guy who runs the show, but so far he hasn’t told us anything back. But then again, sometimes you don’t know if you are going to make it to Trainfest until less than a month before. So we’re still holding out hope, but things aren’t looking too good for this year. We plan to submit an application earlier next year though, and see if that does the trick.

Evening All: Well the cows are all up and out of the pasture, the dogs are put up and I'm thinking that I'll head for the basement. I've been kicking around an idea all day that I want to check out on the layout. I'll know if it is worth persuing later.
There were a couple of UP trains go through while we were on our way to check out the hay fields. I dought that it will be worth having the fields baled, there just isn't enough grass. We get charged a minimum of 2 bales per acre and that could get expensive if we don't make that. Rain to the north and west but none here. That figures.

We are moving to Fredericksburg, TX. Sometime in the winter or spring. Im getting out of the Navy so I have more time to spend at home with my wife and son. We bought 98 achers out there and plan on starting a cattle ranch. I may be taking a road trip out to see the property at the end of this month so figure out where we want the house and THE TRAIN SHOP!!!! lolol
I have 6 days left in the Navy as of today and I cant wait for the time off..

Then you will certainly want to visit the LHS where Trent works. San Antonio is only about 70 miles away. Nice shop, very well stocked. Friendly staff (at least Trent is very friendly!)
