Bob, thanks for the link, it was cool. Enjoyed all his pics. He put in a lot of work.

Brian, I am bummed for you, hope things get better and who knows, maybe a better train will come along somehow. [:)]

Ed, keep the oranges coming, glad they are booming.

Just a quick hello and then back to sanding the benchwork. Yes I like smooth boards, they look pretty. [:D][:D]

It did rain in SoCal today and it is down to a chilly 55. Brrrrrrrrrr. Yes really, its cold. really.

Hey Luc thank-you I have picked up several good senior service books as well my main love has always been Canadian militayr but espeacially naval history.I have practically lived on the HMCS Haida over the years I'm luckey that it's always been so close. It's even closer now as i work in Hamilton and it's new facilities are only 20 minutes from work. Next time I'm out your way i want to see HMCS Sackville the last time I was in NS was the year she was first handed over to the museum so she hadn't been converted back to a corvette yet, love her websight though. Good Evening All:

I spent most of this evening with the club setting up our layout. We are part of a program to help scouts get their MRR badge. They are expecting 100 kids tomorrow. They will be able to get between 6 and 9 badges tomorrow.

Ryan:
I've been to NO many times, even got to operate on the Cresent Lines. I felt very bad when I found out that Claud died, I bought a lot of stuff from him through the years. He was so much more personable then Hub Hobbies.

John:
Put some Maas on a "T" shirt rag and put on the top of the rails, then let sit for a very short time and then taks another "T" shirt rag and clean off. It should do a good job.

Fergie:
I finally was able to get the loco back together but for some reason it won't run. I'll look at it Sunday when I can pray over it. When I took it out of the box it was a smooth running loco, I couldn't get the sound to work but then I didn't read the manual. Here is a picture of you loco - it probably will need some touch up when it gets to the M.E.S.S.

My nephew posted this picture and told me how to do it and it won't do so here is where he posted it, I'll get it straight tomorrow.

Jim:
You might give Rex an e-mail and get his phone number, he is very interesting to talk to and has a lot of experience in a lot of various fields.

Ya'll have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY

Hey, Brian. My condolences about your dad's truck. I hope you guys recover quickly.

Here's one for you. My parents bought me a starter train set for my birthday/XMAS as my birthday is real close to Christmas. Guess what? It was my 50th birthday and it was as much as they could afford but they really wanted me to have it as I'd talked about it for a long time. You know, it's got me kickstarted to enjoying the hobby and looking forward to building my layout. Look at it that way!

This is unreal!!! I believe we are now into exponential growth. I go away for half a day, and 20 new people show up. I don't need a menu, I need a scorecard.

Luc, thanks for asking about the show. We got up there just before 2 PM, and had the truck unloaded super fast. The tables were up in about 2 hours. It was the track that took more time than expected. At one point I was worried that I hadn't brought enough. No problem, tons of extra. Wiring always takes time, but by 8:30, I had had enough. All of the trains are running, but I still want to hook up the relays for the diamonds, so I don't have to run the trains by hand. All in all, smooth, but long. I'll finish up in the morning, I'm whipped.[swg]

Here are a couple of photos.

[wow] Wow! You guys are so warm in welcoming me to the coffee shop; I think another cup a Joe is in order. I joined the site some time ago, but it was only a few weeks ago that I started to pursue the forum. And I finally got the courage to make it into the shop today, thanks for all the greetings and smiles!!!!

Tom - the time period is most likely going to be from the 50’s to present day. And …….. I know this is a large window, but with all the various rolling stock that I have I want to have the flexibility right now to use most of it during various sessions. Still working on possibly narrowing the window some as the layout gets built.

*** - Thanks for the big welcome! I hope to make it in here often! And tomorrow morning I will take you up on the glass of OJ!

Jim - Hey, I am all for any scale, though I am partial to HO! I have some great friends who are N devotees, and I also like to visit a local outdoor G scale layout at our City Park here in New Orleans.

Ed - You guessed it, there are few if any basements in this neck of the woods! We are converting a game room to the train room now, and its all above ground. Can’t build stuff below a few feet, the water table is only 3’ to 5’ below surface, with all the swampland and marsh. Hey, I used to work in La Place a few years back, not far from NORCO. Were you in the oil industry?

Luc - Thanks for the big welcome, I hope to see you again soon.

I got a Historic Rail catalog in the mail today, looked through it and found an atlas someone in the other forum was looking for, going to try and find that post. In any event, they also have a website for their stuff, http://www.historicrail.com Gonna check it out soon!

Ya’ll have a good night, and thanks for the cup o Joe!

QUOTE: Bob - Thanks a bunch for the cleaning material.
[#ditto] Sorry I didn't say thanks the last time I was on, but Kris called up to say Star Trek: Enterprise was on in 1 minute, so I posted and ran. Then it was The Royal Canadian Air Farce, Corner Gas, and British Men Behaving Badly. Anyway, I'm back in now, and thanks again. The Maas Paste has been talked about before (in the shop?) on the MR Forums, and I've wondered just how to apply it to the rails. What method do you find works best?

Ed:
QUOTE: Funny thing, they still use 2x4, 1x6, etc, down here too! Most of the lumber I get down here is rough cut and really measures out close to those nominal dimensions. They ask you when you get the wood if you want them to plane it down.
I think I'm right in saying that 2X4 is more like a 1 3/4 x 3 3/4. It's certainly less that 2x4. this is boring when trying to put up shelves (or benchwork) with brackets the mounting holes in which have been set as if a 2x4 stud actually was 2 inches wide. GRRRRR[banghead] I'm lucky to hit the stud 2 holes in 3. The bottom one, and either the left or the right, seldom both, on a 12x14inch bracket.

Luc: thanks for the trio, a definite improvement in here. For a more relaxed feel, we could maybe try

but I would also go for
and depending on the vocals, there might be room for

Personally I find much solo violin music scratchy, but a good celtic fiddle is another matter, so let's order in a

or some of us can

but I expect that I will be my usual extrovert self

In fact so long as we stay away from

we should do just fine!
By the way, Elliot, I think we need a cleaning service in here, look what just happened

Wow! that was fast, thanks!
Well, it's that time again

Evening; Well we will be heading west tomomrrow morning to sell some more pecans. Mary Ann got $1.25/lb last time.

I haven't had time to do any mrring lately. Of course the overtime will mean more money for the GATS next weekend.

Boy I'm bushed. I think that I'll just hit the sack and drop back in tomomrrow.

well everyone... it apears as if my birthday is going to be a bust.

we replaced the starter in my dads truck today and there was a short in the ignition system that caused the starter to fry and started a fire under the hood... now we are probably have to re-wire the whole thing and this is going to cost money my family doesn't have/can't afford to spend...

what's sad is that this little $70 train set was for my b-day and this past x-mass combined.

Good Evening, Coffee Clubbers (new and long-standing)! I'll have a plain coffee and a cinnamon roll (for desert)!

Good to see all the new people posting (even if it means more pages to go through when I come back next time).[:D]

John, does that 12 number system mean the Sumerians didn’t have an opposable thumb?[}:)]
And *definitely* pick modeling - any day!

We’re supposed to have (moderate, or - by Canadian standards, wimpy) cold weather tonight here in S.E. Missouri, and only a few areas might get a sNoah flake or two (if they’re lucky) - mostly across the river in Tenn. Is the jetstream saving all the fun for Tom and then you guys in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland?

QUOTE: Originally posted by egmurphy

Like most of you, actually getting it to a semi-complete stage (all track and basic scenery in all areas) won’t mean there’s nothing to do. I could spend years detailing it. And, who knows, maybe I’ll magically find more space and expand!

Yep, the companies that make all the varieties of detailing items (at a couple to dozens of $’s each) are counting on us to keep on detailing (and detailing, and...)! [;)] So how big of an extension on your house will your CFO let you add, Ed?
QUOTE: Originally posted by egmurphy

Think of it as a work in progress, especially with all the new guys dropping in. Once they're here for a while we'll get them to divulge some secret info and we can add them to the list

Do they have to know the secret handshake, Ed?[swg]

Are we gonna start an informal pool on how soon we hit the 10000th mark? [;)]

As for the question about meeting, some of us have more distance between us than others. I’m not sure there’s anyone very close to me, though some of the West coast people might live close enough to meet.

Der John, so long as that’s not 2 cm. X 4 cm....wouldn't get as much for your money that way![;)]

Duke, your Fridays sound like a double win, with dinner and HD! [:)]

Teffy, did Stephanie paint it pink... - oh my goodness, she did! Hope your/her life insurance is paid up! [;)]
Rex’s layout looks like either he’s been working most of his days on it, or he’s been working on it a lot longer than I’d have guessed. How’s his lighting working out - I noticed he’s using track-lighting, apparently.

Matt, it's a good thing [:)] when you find a LHS with good selection and not far from your home.

Noah, I forgot - what building are you working on? Enjoy your all-modeling weekend.

Now if Tim gets power tools for birthdays, Christmases, he might get to be known as.... (drum roll....) Tim the (power) tool man! [;)]

Well, need to get going for now. See you all later!

Good evenig all.

Well tonight was another write-off, had to run to the supermarket to get supplies, now the freezer/fridge/cubboards are full again and the bank account is almost empty.

It is nice to see so many more modelers here and from all over. I spent 5 yrs in the UK on exchange with the RN and have visited every regions including Beautiful Cardif. If any of you ever get over there, take the time to go to Cardif, you'll not regret it.

CFO has been passing stones all last night and today. I don't understand where they come from and why so many. We are saving them for MD to look at on her next appointment.

Tom - CFO says thank you for your concerns. She was reading over my shoulder. [:D]

John - Thanks for the website. I invited a trio to play for us tonight.

Greg - You are to visit GLOETOWN site any time. At times I add new stuff, I usually mention it on here or in my profile when I do.

Rob - CFO said thanks. BTW there are many books available on the history of the Senior Service. I've enjoyed 31 yrs in that Service. Would do it all over again too.

Ryan - [#welcome][#welcome] drop in anytime and often. This a fun place.

Robert - Pay attention [swg][swg][swg] And don't you leave again or we'll need to do something drastic!!!!!!!!!

Bob - Thanks a bunch for the cleaning material. I'll send "Bruno" after Fergie is he does not deliver!!!! You'd be amazed what "Bruno" will do for a quarter or a shilling!!!!![;)][;)][;)]

Ed - put me down for 55 yrs young and getting younger by the day. Though there are days.............

Well must get my bits ready for tommorrow.

Night all

Happy MRRing

Got it. Actually I already had it and have calc'd, and noted that it means your b'day should be June 27. I think the question mark just carried forward in the list from an earlier version. Like I said, I didn't edit or update Jim's list, just posted it as being the last posted version of the whole list (at that time).

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Another beautiful day down here. Mostly cloudy, some sun, mild temperatures. Just a nice day to be out and around. [8D] Had to do a few things today, including taking some of the dogs to the vets for shots, that ate up a big chunk of the day. So progress on the layout was minimal, but there was progress!

Why does that sound familiar?

Since you’re in N.O., we’ll assume this isn’t in a basement, right?

Sounds like you have a good concept for your road. Should be an interesting layout. Too bad we didn’t get to know each other a couple of years earlier. My last job before retirement involved a couple of projects in Norco and Convent, LA. I flew over there almost every week during 2002 and 2003.

TurboTim – the oranges are doing super. Most are actually just reaching their peak. We’ll probably head back to the grove either tomorrow or Sunday to pick a new batch. There’s plenty, so the FCVN should stay busy with those loads headed north for a couple more months. Keep dosing with the Sunshine Vitamin C, guys! I'll remind Zoe to put out orange sections for the sugar challenged among you, as well as the fresh squeeezed juice.

While you probably can’t send an attachment with Forum mail, what you could do is simply email him through Forum mail and ask him to reply with his email address. Once you have that you can send an email with attachment through your normal email server. Whoops, update, I see that he’s already sent you his email. There you go.

QUOTE: Teffy:
Who was the guy that asked if any of the posters ever meet each other face to face and that we'd better meet in a public place.
Well you’ve got to remember that The Coffee Shop is a rather special place, so what we may consider prudent behavior among the regulars here could be considered rather risky on another site. Out in the real internet world, meeting in public would probably be good advice. By the way, when I get to Groves do I get to see your layout or are you starting to have second thoughts about me?

QUOTE: Railroading_Brit:
Every January we put on a pantomime (not sure if these are found in the States, basically it's an adaptation of an old fairytale-type story…
Nope, not common in the States. But I did a couple of projects overseas with a large Brit contingent among the staff, so we had to produce a pantomime. So I’ve at least been exposed to them.

Hey there, Novacoach. Welcome to the Coffee Shop.

You too, Northern_Blues.
QUOTE: It's cold up here!
Wow, another NOTNB model railroader (North of the Northern Border). That’s quite a contingent of Canadian model rails we have in the Shop now.

Noah, hope you enjoy dinner and the trip to the LHS tomorrow. Wish I was able to get to mine that soon, but I think I’m still a few months away from a trip NOB.

QUOTE: Tom:
I'm going to try to get the rest of the tall grass and weeds planted on the section I've been working on…
Do you have photos of the weeds? I’ll eventually need a lot of that, so I’m always interested in seeing shots and hearing about techniques.

QUOTE: grayfox:
If he ever comes down your way Ed, make it point to go to his concert…
The problem is that no one ever comes ‘down our way’ because we’re so far out in the lesser provinces. Most of the top names do come through Mexico City, but that’s a haul from here just to see a concert.

QUOTE: …the BIG TRAIN SHOW is at the BIG E Exposition center in West Springfield, Massachusetts tomorrow and Sunday. It opens at 8am, and I will be on my way at 7 to be there as the gates open, and probably won't leaveuntil dark…
Good for you. Sounds like a great show. I can only wish I could go. Be sure to post a report.

Okay guys, that’s all for now.

Good evening gentlemen of the coffee shop....just entered after a busy day. A beautiful day today, clear skies, no snoah, the snow has actuallt melted off most of the roads. It was bitterly cold last night, got down to 8 below zero, definetly a three dog night.

Ed: The Yanni concert was fabulous, it is so much better live to see this great musician. If he ever comes down your way Ed, make it point to go to his concert.

Jim: Did you say "plastered" or plastering?[;)][;)][:)] As for the Parrot, I read the message, it said something about bringing test questions to Fergie for his exam!!! Ohh my !!

Matt: Fergie will be on duty next week, maybe he can take a hop across the ATL and bring you boatload of snoah.

Duke: I received the email via the forum, but no paint codes, just send them to silver60@charter.net

JimW: Big welcome, have a coffee on me[#welcome]Zoe will bring you a piece of anniversary cake too.

Tim: Good job Buddy!!! You will be an expert builder before you know it, AND, now the wife can get you more toys for Christmas like power tools to build more tables, maybe an addition to the house for bigger train room YAAAAAAAAAAA baby !!

Greg: Snoahing in OK? Great!! We love to share the wealth. Gee, were getting the snow closer to Ed, lets keep snowblowing southward guys.

Silver Spike ( Ryan) Big welcome to the coffee shop, have a big OJ on me (and Ed, his oranges from his grove) [#welcome]

Train room update: 18 feet of wall was plastered, or " mudded" as the pros call it. I am not a pro at this, so it will take me longer for sure.
I will not be working on it tomorrow either as the BIG TRAIN SHOW is at the BIG E Exposition center in West Springfield, Massachusetts tomorrow and Sunday. It opens at 8am, and I will be on my way at 7 to be there as the gates open, and probably won't leaveuntil dark

Good Evenin' Everybody,
Today was another good day in the mountains. A lot more progress was made on the bathroom redo, but there is still more to come. Tomorrow will be another work day. Louise and I will both hit it. I'll fini***he last few bits of board and bead wainscoating and She'll start priming it. With both of us on it we'll get a lot done. Sunday will be a railroad day. I've decided it will be time for a break by then. I'm going to try to get the rest of the tall grass and weeds planted on the section I've been working on and get the Hiwassee River section carved and fastened down.

The temperature is dropping pretty quickly and the storm should be here within a couple of hours. The weatherguessers are calling for ice or sleet or snow. South of us it will probably be ice, but up here it's anybody's guess. Since if it's ice there's a good chance of losing power, I'm going to make a big pot of coffee tonight. That way we can heat it up on the grill in the morning. One way or the other, we will have good coffee to get the day started.

Novacoach and Silverspike, Welcome to the coffee shop. Have a cuppa and enjoy. The South Louisiana locale sounds really interesting. Lots of different railroads and interesting scenery. Have you picked a time period?

Trolleyboy, Master and Commander is a really good movie. Shawna got it for me on DVD. The Acheron is very interesting. I seem to recall them saying that she was built in Boston, and she is a very large, fast and heavily armed frigate. Sounds a lot like a class of 44 gun frigates that were built for a very young Navy in the 1790's. I might have to read the book to see if there's more information there on her. Anyway, I really enjoyed the movie.

Turbo one, you're making really good progress.

Philnrunt, Thank God for good Moms and good Dads. They never gave up. Reckless Abandon was a lot more fun to hang around with , but a lot more dangerous, and not nearly as good an example to follow.

i'd better go for now. Dinner's ready and it's going to be good.
Have a great evening, everybody,
Tom

Rob, maybe we should check - how's the weather in your area been around that time of year? sNoah? Freezing rain? or what? (Should be better than in Minneapolis in the winter, though, right...?)[}:)][;)]

I've got my list but it's not sorted in order of age. I think the best summary was the last one, which (Cape Girardeau)Jim posted several pages back. Here it is:

QUOTE: (CG)Jim:
Teffy - make mine 58 (and proud of it!). With the changes other have added, it looks like this might be fairly inclusive:

Flip 68?
John 67
*** 66
Der (John) 65
Bob - 64
Paul B - 62
Tom - 59
Jim (Cape G) - 58
Ed - 58
Luc - 55 ?
Phil - (Northern) just turned 50
Lupo - 50 (say Ferrari! )
Mark - 48
TurboTim - 45
Fergie - 43
Elliot (our founder) - 43
PennsyHoosier - 42
Krump - 40
TrolleyRob - 33
JP - 33
Brian (brclem) - 27, with 28 coming soon
Jim (Ark) late 30's?
Trainfreak Scott - 15
sNoah 13
Mitchell 13

Duke - ? (Got a birthday coming up?)

I know LilRob missed the list, but I think he's 31. There may have been a couple of more corrections posted since Jim's post. If so, I have them noted, but I didn't go down his list to see if it was completely current.

Think of it as a work in progress, especially with all the new guys dropping in. Once they're here for a while we'll get them to divulge some secret info and we can add them to the list.

Regards

Ed

[#welcome] novaChris. The coffee here is great, but make sure Zoe uses boiling water for the tea. There are some strange practices this side of the Atlantic[(-D]

OK then, what's with the John-Luc thing? I didn't know Captain Pickard was a mrr! [:D][;)]

Thanks, Noah!!

I have the biggest weekend challenge, I think. I'm still preparing my basement for a layout. This weekend will be wiring new lighting over my intended layout area every couple of feet, re-routing a heating duct (gotta do that right! It's cold up here!), and I'm going to paint and nail 4X8 lattice up on the ceiling to hide the exposed floor joists.

Then, paint the concrete floor with a fresh coat of concrete paint. I'm thinking layout building on February 5th is the start!

Well folks,

Which means a weekend of modeling!! I go to the local hobby shop tomorrow in Madison, I have to order some Athearn Blue Box GP38 handrails, and pick up some oil to lube up a Athearn Blue box GP 38 that I got as a present. I hope the guys at the LHS can direct me to the right stuff.

I also have to get some more work done on the building, but probably not tomorrow, as I’ll have a full day anyway, but definitely Sunday. I better get going soon too, as I’m going out for dinner tonight, probably going pretty soon. See ya later!!!

[edit]Forgot to say Hi to our new people here today, a great big [#welcome] to all our newbies from me, you'll like this place!
