Hi all

Have finished repairing the Fleischmann loco, now looks as good as it runs. 3 pole motor, driving 2 axles with traction tyres, picking up on the other truck. Amazingly it'll cruise around steadily at low speeds despite this!

John, Comrade Khrushchev came out of the debate ok - the "opposition" made assorted errors (such as having a very loud person who hadn't bothered to find evidence to support his views... very easy to out-argue them!). Conclusion essentially was that he was well-meaning but a bit hopeless - he had good ideas and intentions but they didn't work. Bearing in mind what he had to work with I'd say he did pretty well - USSR was still recovering from WW2, Stalin's terror, food shortages, etc.

Currently waiting for more snow. Wish I lived "up north" in the Pennines - half the roads up there are closed and they have about 25cm of snow forecast! Our best snow coverage was on the car bonnet this morning - though when you hit 60mph you end up with a personal blizzard effect!

Bye for now

Good evening all.

The dam is a funny lake. Years ago, the lake used to go under the freeway and over to the east. About 10 years ago a huge tree farm appeared as they let the lake start to dry up. Huge trees everywhere. You can't even see the water for the lake from the freeway. Today the headline pic in the paper. Can't see the trees trought the water.

Little sprinkles throught the evening, but nothing compared to last 7 days. LA got more rain then we did. We are at 22 for the season, they are over 30. Normal for us is 8. New sink hole by the Fashion Valley Mall freeway onrap. 35 feet across. That is about 2 miles from last weeks sinkhole. I think I speak for all of SoCal, all you easterners, northerners, and midwest folk, you can have your rain, hail, tornados back now. We have had enough. See if we ask for more rain to fill up the lakes again.[8D][8D]

Still trying to catch up on reading of all the pages I am behind on.

Welcome to the newbies.

Happy Birthday to all the birthday folks.

Thank you from all of us wet, cold SoCals for all your best wishes. We really do not handle all this stuff here. San Diego is desert up to about 10 miles from the ocean. Water in these amounts do not mix well. I bet a few outdoor trains no longer exist around here, but WE CAN REBUILD.

Trench is holding, all that water leaves my newly created backyard pond as soon as it comes. Woo Hoo no more flooding.

Take care all

I am getting a real nights sleep.

Tim (dry for now)

P.S. Ed you are a nice guy, thanks for all the help you have given everyone here with your terrific how to information sessions. You make things run smoooth, or is that smoothie ? [:D]

Thanks Ed

Good evening coffee clubbers. I had a pretty good day today, the weather was livable low minus's and lots of sun.Brian and Tim sorry to hear about the rain I'll send you some of our sun but we need to keep a good chunk of it to melt our piles 'o'snow.I was able to finish painting the F-I-L's PCC today turned out better than mine[^][8)] oh well, you know the old saying practice makes it perfect.I managed to get some mainline down as well but ran out of rail spikes.[V][:(]Oh well that means I'll be goin to the LHS tomorrow don't you hate it when that happens[;)][swg][swg].Chloe please continue to water log Jorden and NSengineer on me as well.[#welcome] to the best little coffee shop around, pop in lots and join in with the inmatespatrons.[:p][:p] Oh well bedtime for me got to get up early in the am[|)]Have a good night all[zzz][zzz][zzz] Rob

Good evening, Chloe - I'll have one of Ed's smoothies (don't think they'd like me being on-call and drinking fuzzy navels), please. I'll take it over by Paul's table.

Hi and [#welcome], csxguy (Jordan) and ftwNSengineer! Have your favorite hot beverage on me (or try one of Ed’s OJ’s or fuzzy navels or such). You can also place your food orders with Zoe (day shift till about suppertime) or Chloe (her twin who covers the night shift). You'll have to ask some of the other Coffee Clubbers how you tell them apart. This is a good place to visit, to ask questions - you’ll be surprised at the collective range of information you can find among the Coffee Clubbers here. [:)]

Noah, good to hear that you ‘got off easy’ today, and can get some MRR’ing in. Sounds good that they’ll be working on a roundhouse (eventually...).

Brian and Tim, hope your weather cooperates better. Saw some pics of the run-off(run-over?) from one of the dams (guess it was the one you were talking about, Tim). Someone needs to find that spigot and turn it off for a while.

LilRob, how’s your “AFLAC” quack? [;)] You might need to get a pair of waders if it doesn't quit soon. Up here in Missouri we're getting a little snow (almost nothing to Fergie, *** or Der John) tonight. Supposed to get just below freezing, so it probably won't amount to anything (and will melt tomorrow).

Ed, sometimes, in spite of your best efforts, the kids don’t turn out like you’d hoped.[;)] I'm sure there are Santa Fe fathers whose kids end up liking UP or Conrail. At least you didn’t fall for the old ‘pull my finger’ bit. [swg]

Flip, remember the ‘AH’ effect - you’re always gonna find some A**H****s in life, so when you do, just take a deep breath and say, “Ah, another AH.” Recharge your own batteries, kick back and get some R&R time for yourself, after you’ve been taking care of Deb and hauling down the road in your van. And does Noah know you’re stealing his line? [:)]

Evening news is on, so I'll head home and catch it and see about some nap time until I get called out.

Blessings (and drier weather for our soggy Shop members),

Evening Gang;

Duke; the top does loose some but it’s the bottom that is the worst. If you can store the bales off the ground some how it’s much better. We store ours on the ground and accept the lose. You’re right, it’s a whole lot better than loading ,hauling, and stacking in the barn. The ease of handling makes up for the waste.

ftwnSengineer; Welcome to the coffee shop. First cups on the house and the rest is on whoever starts a page. Try the OJ. It’s fresh from Ed’s grove. So what’s your modeling pleasure? I’m in HO, ( that’s Horribly Oversize ) modeling a freelance ore hauling road in the upper peninsula of Michigan.

Der; That’s a nice shot of the sea fog. I used to be able to see that on Lake Michigan in the winter.

The sprigging that I’ve referred to is for Coastal Bermuda grass. This grass is planted by taking sprigs ( root stock ) and putting it in the ground. This is done with a machine that takes opens a furrow and inserts the sprigs and than covers them up. The grass makes very good hay and grassing.

Tom; Thanks for the b-day wishes for Mary Ann. Yes we had a good time. Ford said that the engine was OK. They took the radiator out and sent it to be cleaned out. They did this a couple of years ago too so I don’t know what’s going on.

Good Night everyone, I’m off to bed.

Good evening one and all. That hot chocolate turned out to be cocoa after all, as I couldn't find the packets of HC. (Kris was late back, and I had found them by the tie she arrived[sigh]) What I did find was some Ovaltine. Any takers?

QUOTE: Hey der, nice job on the road. what did you use to make it???
The base is foam, the filler on the sides is Lepages Wood Filler. The road pavement is Woodland Scenics Flex Paste painted on in layers, topped by matte medium, the last two coats of which were diluted with water. Painted with a mix of grey acrylic. Lines are painted and plain paper cut to 4" scale N. applied with matte medium, and the whole finished (for now) with more matte medium. I am going to put a grey/red ballast on the shoulders, and there are guard rails to go on after that (or before, I haven't decided. There's more pics of the road on page 3 of my album on railimages. See the link in my signature. I said "for now" because my matte medium isn't quite matte and it looks as if it's been raining! Maybe I should stir the pot. Anyone experienced that stuff going non-matte over years of storage?

My guardian angel was sure with me that evening.[angel]

Reminds me of the summer day back in the late 60s when I was sure I could make it back to the office in Toronto from Niagara Falls. Fell asleep at the wheel on the Queen Elizabeth Highway and hit a bridge abutment a glancing blow. Knocked the car into the passing lane. By the grace of God there was no other traffic on the road in either lane. Sure woke me up![:O][:I][B)] How often is there no other trafic in thedaytime on a major highway, in the summer , on a tourist route, even in the 60s?[angel]indeed [tup]
BTW, speaking of Niagara, at that time there were more peaches grown on the Niagara region than in all the Peach State.[:O]

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Just back from the local pool parlor. Wish I had some exciting news to report, but it’s just life as usual down here in the slow lane. Weather continues great, really warm this afternoon, but cooling off nicely now with a bit of a breeze. [8D]

Opps, guess I got caught starting off a new page. [:0] That hasn’t happend in a while. Okay, we’ll get Zoe and Chloe both (at shift change) to fix up a mess of fresh squeezed orange juice, orange smoothies, orange sections (for the sugar challenged among us), and maybe even some tequila sunrises, fuzzy navels or just plain O.J. with Bacardi Solera over here in the adult beverage section. [:D]

[#welcome] Welcome to the shop csxguy. Thanks for putting some info in your profile, Jordan, that always helps when we’re trying to get to know someone new. You’ve got some thing in common with some of our regulars. We have a couple of other guys from the Peach State here, and I figure you’re just about the same age as Noah.

Duke, what’s an ORF? [%-)] Also, since you’re a R/C plane hobbyist, would you mind if I emailed you offline with a few questions? Junior is after me to get him an r/c plane (no, not trains, where did I go wrong??? [:(] ). Since we’ll be on our own down here with no support group or coach, I obviously have a few questions that I’d love to pass by someone with experience. I have been reading the Beginners Training Area forum on RCGroups.com.

So you say you’re close enough to see the light at the end of the tunnel? Good for you.

Gotta run and have dinner. I’ll check back in later. [dinner]

Ryan, Thanks for the compliments!

Jim, Thanks to you too for the compliments. As luck would have it, tonight is one of those nights when I got a little time on my hands. We went on a field trip today and didn’t have any classes.

Paul, If you ever make a trip this way again you should try to stop there. They’ve made a lot of improvements in just the last 10-15 years. They are even planning to get a roundhouse put up sometime, although that it quite a ways off with the repair to the steam locomotives.

Tim, the ARK can use some trackage rights that we are owed for a favor and come pick you up out of that M.E.S.S! [:D] [;)]But it doesn’t look you’ll be needing the ARK’s services anytime soon if the sun’s coming out.

Well, I guess I better be a moving, but I’ll check back in a little while. That is unless I start running over with the ARK’s main horsepower to get Tim out of that horrible M.E.S.S.!

Hi Zoe, I'll have an OJ smoothie on Ed's account - right nice of him to start this page for us...[;)]

Sorry to hear about all the rain everyone else seems to be getting. TIm, hope it misses your area on the next storm through. Der John, does Rosie-the-dog know how to tread water if you guys get as much as Tim's been having? Maybe get her a styrofoam collar to keep her head above water... [}:)]

We've had winter come to refamiliarize us with it today. Well, not winter like our horthern friends have, only low 40's today. And mercifully, no sNoah today (and not much rain, either).

It doesn't sound like the storage shed people have any power outlets close to my storage unit, unless I go by some time when one of the managers is there to help me move it over to the place that has an outlet. But not sure if he'll be there on Saturday - we'll see.

Well, work calls. Zoe, I'll take this in a travel cup, please. See you all later! [:)]

Afternoon all.

The rain has stopped for now as tim has mentioned, But we are not out of the clear yet.... it's supposed to start raining again tomorrow. They are saying that we are going to have the worst rainy season in history.... so far we have had well over 34 inches of the wet stuff... I think that compares to like 10 feet of snow.... not sure though. The record for Los angeles was set 115 years ago.... yes you read that right 115 years ago when they first started taking measurements pretty much... Sunday another storm is supposed to be moving in and I am so not looking forward to it.... driving to pick up my bro from work can be quite the chore in my mom's PT Cruiser.... it hydroplanes at around 45 - 50 mph. Once again because of this storm train activity in So Cali has been limited..... good thing I don't have to ride the train anymore.

well I'm off for now.... see you all later.

Good Afternoon Coffee Clubbers,

Really a lazy day down here. Just warm enough, but with a slight breeze, to lull one to sleep. I was sitting in the swing on the terrace, working on a crossword puzzle, and bam, naptime. That’s probably what I enjoy most about retirement, nap when the mood strikes. [zzz]

QUOTE: Paul: I agree that he had some good ideas and seemed like a good modeler. He just needs to get rid of that 2x4 on his shoulder.
We’re probably lucky he just tried one drive-by posting here in the Coffee Shop.

QUOTE: I don’t remember who it was that put me on to doing my replies on Word, but thanks again. It is really great.
Me, me, that was me!! [:D] And you’re quite welcome.

btw, what's chisel plowing? And what crop are you sprigging?

QUOTE: Lupo: Ed: about the 10,000 post: contest: is the bet still open? Can you put me up for July 4th ?
Technically, no. But for an old charter member of the Coffee Shop like you, sure. You’ve got it. [;)]

QUOTE: ftwNSengineer: Sounds like you need to build an ark!
No, that’s Noah who has the ARK. Actually, ftw, you’re new here so you might not get that little in joke. In case you haven’t read enough posts yet, one of our regulars, Noah, has a railroad that he has named the A.R.K. In fact, it all started as a joke here last year when his basement was flooding. btw, welcome to the Coffee Shop. [#welcome]

Tom, tennis ball sized hail??? [:0] That could do some serious damage to a car or a house. Glad you dodged it. Yeah, keep us informed on the Phil/Amy visit. Glad you like the quote. I’ve started changing it every few weeks.

Geez, Tim, I would never have imagined San Diego to have such weather problems. I guess Mother Nature likes to make sure everyone gets their fair share.

JP, did you get those recommendations on San Antonio I posted yesterday?

Nice view, John. Must be nice living there.

Anyway, that clears up the morning responses. Off to play a bit of pool [8] with my F-I-L in a short while. I’ll check back this evening.

Hasta luego,

Saw a review of the EuroDisney campsite recently, all-serviced pitches but at truly crazy prices, about 3X what you'd pay for a decent Municipal site in "mainland" Europe and all-serviced isn't much use for an RV (you just take on water and dump waste when you take it out for the day, saves a lot of carrying containers about compared to a trailer caravan!). I've got a few interesting stories about rough weather while camping - like the time when a miniature hurricane went through, took out pretty much every tree on the site, nobody injured but a few mangled buildings, was over in about 30mins. Have also been on sites where digging drainage trenches began to look like a really good idea (river went up 2ft in about an hour), so can sympathise with Tim on this one!

My latest G scale aquisition (ZillertalBahn 4-wheel coach) arrived this morning from eBay, in great shape and well worth the price (2/3rds of new price and absolutely mint). Currently waiting for a small parcel of spares for my Fleischmann locos - should be here tomorrow with any luck. Will post a picture of the loco I'm rebuilding when it's done - have touched in the paintwork so just need the new couplers and steps now. Should look good with the Rowa "Steuerwagen" (cab car) I have sitting on a shelf awaiting some motive power.

We've sort of had snow - it's coming down now but not sticking. Guessing ground temperature is a little high. Who was it suggested the trip to the Alps? Might well have to resort to that...

Bye for now!

Just turned twelve noon, and I startedin on this trip to the shop at about 10::00a.m.! Had to take and process some photos for here, and also for a project we have coming up. I'd better have some Chinese Tea please Zoe. [^] It's been snowing fine little flakes all morning, but no wind to speak of.

QUOTE: Brian, sounds like you had an interesting few years at Disney. I’m probably one of the few people left who have never been to Disneyland, Disneyworld, EPCOT, or any of the other Disney parks.

QUOTE: Scotty, good to see you in here, even if briefly. Are you talking about a local move or long distance? At least if it was local (just a new house) you’d be able to keep your hobby shop job.
.Of course, I hadn’t thought of that aspect. Hope it works out OK with the move, far or near.[tup]

Ryan:Greg is reporting fog. A couple of days ago we woke up to 7F, and a little sea fog, here’s what it looks like.

Lunch is in the offing, so had better go. Fergie is under way again, having taken on 200 tonnes of fuel. They burn 20 tonnes a day. He's asking what's new in the Coffee Shop.

The sun is out. Repeat, the sun is out. The trenches held, and the backyard is not a pond. Woo Hoo. Part of the fence blew over, but that is it for us. And the fact the dog won't go outside as it is too wet. We are already up to 56, come on sunshine.

Sink holes all over town, and cliff homes are the wrong thing to own right now. But thanks to all who wrote to check on us. Tornados never came down, just funnel clouds so far.

Let the sun shine in, let the sun shine in.....Fifth Dimension [8D] [8D] [8D] [8D]

Good Mornin' Everybody,
It's a beautiful morning in the mountains today. Tuesday turned out to be a wild day weatherwise. severe thunderstorms and very high winds off and on all day. Not too far to the south of us they had severe hail, up to tennis ball size in a few places. That we skated, and I'm glad. It finally cleared off yesterday morning.

I got started on the taxes earlier in the week. Got all the information pulled together and organized and got the tax program loaded on the computer. Then I went to download the updates and couldn't do it. It would get so far in the process and lock the computer up. I've been trying to contact their "help desk" for about a day now, unsuccessfully. I'll keep trying until I do. This isn't much fun.

I'll get in touch with Phil and Amy sometime today to see what their schedule is looking like for the rest of the week. Hopefully they'll have time to swing by here for a cup of coffee. Bill M. is going to try to get up here too. It should be a lot of fun.

Ed, the mirror at the end of the river is already installed. It's set into a curve so it looks like the river continues to curve around out of sight. The bridge will help disguise the area above and behind the mirror. I like the John Wayne quote. It's very true.

Der, I've used cardboard strips and plaster cloth before. I think I like foam better because it's easy to change and rework as you go along.

Scott, Hi and welcome back. Too bad about putting the layout on hold temporarily. Where might the possible move be to?

Paul, I hope MaryAnn had a wonderful birthday. What have you found out about the truck overheating?

Teffy, I couldn't agree more with your comments about people's attitudes. Makes all the difference in the world. Especially about something like this. It's a hobby and it's for fun. It seems to me that an attitude like that would take a lot of the fun out of it.

JP, good luck on the townhouse. I'm glad you found one with room for a railroad.

Flip/ Luc, I really enjoyed the piece on how to stay young by G. Carlin. There's a lot of truth there.

I'd better go for now. It's going to be a busy day.
Have a great day, everybody,
Tom
