Check the ball joints, steering linkage (particularly if FrontWD), and wheel bearings (if not FWD), and sway links. Sway links are easily replaced (a glorified nut-and-bolt with rubber cushions). Jack up the front end and grab the tire. Push and pull on it. If you feel movement, this is a BAD THING. Losing steering linkage or ball joints can cause an accident or damage to your car. If you're really lucky, nothing terrible happens except a hook truck and a repair bill.

And obviously I posted that before reading through all the way.

Good Evenin' Everybody,
It's been a really good day in the mountains, despite there not being much time for the railroad today. Lots of odds and ends to do, but I managed to get them done.

Welcome to all the new folks who stopped by the coffee shop. The pot is always on, it's good coffee, the tea is also good, and we're glad you stopped by. Drop in anytime.

Chris, good luck on the oil tender conversion. I bet it turns out fine. It will make a real change in the appearance of your 2-8-2.

Noah, pennies work very well for weight. Twelve of them equal one ounce. I use gap filling super glue to attach them. Another advantage is that they are less expensive than tape weights. An ounce only costs 12 cents.

Dougal, Tell us about the N scale layout you operated on. I'll also be interested to hear what you see at Altoona. Seems strange to think about Norfolk Southern and CSX locomotives on horseshoe curve.

Tomorrow will be largely a railroad day. Since the mainline and sidings are done, I think I'll start installing the fascia boards. I use 1/8 inch masonite for that because it bends around curves easily. It needs more internal support than thicker material would, but that's a fair tradeoff.

I'd better go for now. I hope everybody has a great evening,
Tom

It had a pretty big (15 train) yard and an auto transloading track, if I remember correctly it had 3 main train, one made a single rotation around th layout and the other two made to, maximum grade was a whopping 2.5% (2 to 5 engines required on each train), I ran a couple Amtrak P42's, an NS C40-9W, a Conrail SD60M, and a few BNSF SD70MAC's.

Evening all,

Continuing with the problems of the computer connection at home. Finally had to resort to going downtown the day before yesterday to get online with a decent connection. I’ve been working on this reply offline, as I can’t sem to stay on line long enough to read the day’s posts and reply.

Took advantage of the faster connection the other day to click on Ferg’s website (I normally avoid sites with photos as much as possible with my connection). Nice models, especially liked the new turntable bridge. Have to ask if that’s you on the ship?

I suppose it could be true, but I kind of doubt that the ‘whole 9 yards’ saying came from a concrete truck. When I started out in the business, I think that 5-6 yards was more common. Of course, I can barely recall what I had for breakfast yesterday, so my memory may not be that reliable.

Well I have no background working for pizza joints, but I like pizza. Does that count? Actually I wish I could find an excuse to make a trip back up to the northeast (like northern Jersey or southern Connecticut) where they make really good pizza.

Okay I give up, what’s the “upside-down 7 up” that soemone posted here yesterday or the day before? Thought someone else would have asked the question by now, but maybe I’m the only one who doesn’t know./

Tom – forgot to ask, and don’t remember if you mentioned earlier (there goes that memory again) did you ballast first or are you going to ballast after painting the ties? What sort of a color tone are you going for, newly creosoted, medium aged, or real old grey? Using the mix from the bottom of the thinner jar or a custom blend of brown/black/other?

IceTtrainman / CmdrWedge and all the rest of you who have just dropped in – welcome aboard. We’re kind of a casual group. Some train talk, some everyday stuff, some cooking (we’re partial to barbeque recipes, but the conversation did get off on Dutch cuisine for a while).

Noah, with all the fishing up there in Wisconsin, can’t you get lead sinkers at a local sporting goods store? Andrew & Tom beat me to the recommendation of using pennies.

Teffy, the problem with Houston drivers is that they simply don’t believe anyone who signals is actually planning on turning or changing lanes.

Sounds like it was a pretty good sized layout, Dougal. Seems like you enjoyed it. Hey, how did you do that loco drawing you posted yesterday or the day before

Hasta mañana

Ed [:)]

Nevermind, I forgot what I was going to say. [}:)] [;)] [:D]

This actually happened to me at work tonight. I went to my toolbox (a rollaround that I always leave in the same spot) to get something and on the way decided to get a few Tums/Rolaids and take them. I keep a LARGE bottle in my toolbox. After eating about 3 Tums I could not remember what I went to my box for. [:0] [B)] I had to stand then and rethink why I walked over there.

I just came up with the solution to our memory problems. When I can remember it I will post it. Don't hold your breathe. [;)] [:D]

I am going to start reading the post and jot down a few notes. That way I will remember what I want to post. Now where did I put my pencil?

Noah, there was a thread about 2 weeks ago about weighing down cars and it also talked about now using certain glues. Some glues will cause the cars to warp over time. Honestly, I don't remember which thread it was or who started it. <Ed and I are going to make a great team, whos on First?>

Jim, all of those guys have posted and most still do. Jeff (Conrail) spends most of his time posting on train sim, or other train sites now. He is also a regular on msn messenger. Henry is somewhat new and posted a thread on the trains.magazine forum about a 19 year old Kansas youth being found dead on the tracks. This thread was about 3 weeks ago. When you see a post with AIM at the bottom those posters have it and you can chat with them.

The "chat room" being referred to in an earlier post is a private chat with only people on my buddy list. Most everyone on my buddy list like Trains, go figure. [:D] [;)] [:D]

Hollor at me anytime. [:)] If you can't hollor real loud then just im me. [;)] [8D] [;)]

Morning All!
got a message from Bill Matthewson , this morning, he asks to say:
Hello to you all!
He has not had an operation yet, he is on antibiotics and medication right now, and getting some rest, antibiotics can be very tiring.
coming Friday he has to go in for further medical tests and said he will be having coffee again when he is feeling better !
So let's all think about him and wish him all the best and a speedy recovery !

I emailed Snake. He replied. [:)]

Poor guy has had a ton of bad stuff going on in his life. One thing we can all do is email him and encourage him. Everyone needs a little encouragement from time and time and it definately is his time.

I believe we will see him in the coffee shop real soon, maybe even today. [:)]

Hello everyone, we are getting so many "regulars" it is getting hard to remember all the names. I never intend to leave anyone out but I know I do. Many of my posts are late at night when I am tired and I make spelling errors of grammer errors and don't even know it. Then when I find them, I cringe. [B)]

Funny thing, I always am drinking coffee in the morning when I come in here. But now I have to have drink more coffee just to wake up. [:(] I am on my second or third cup now and will drink about 3 or 4 more all by myself. [:0]

According to either "Why Do Clocks Run Clockwise?" or "Why Do We Say It?", the expression dates from WW II when ammo for the waist gunners on bombers came in 27-foot belts - 9 yards. In mission debriefing, when the gunners were asked how much ammo they'd shot off, it was smart to respond "The whole 9 yards, sir", lest you be seen as a hesitant gunner. Now I'm sure some of that 9 yards ended up in the English Channel...

Morning all (or afternoon, depending on where you're reading this, I guess),

Yeah Jay, that was one of the three options previously listed as possible sources of the phrase. I can believe that one more easily.

Yup, we seem to have had a lot of new visitors dropping in lately. It's always good to have some new blood around, but you're right, Jim, that it makes it even harder to keep track of who commented what and when.

Good news from Lupo about Bill M. At least I would judge it to be better that they're treating it with antibiotics and medication rather than immediately cutting. Hope he gets better and drops back in soon.

I see Snake has started a new thread. So at least he's being active again.

I don't normally watch much television (good thing, 'cause the selection of channels I have available here is terrible) but yesterday I finally got the urge to watch one of the videos that I bought while on the vacation. So I pried junior away from his cartoons and video games long enough to slip in the DVD of the Cumbres & Toltec. Watched about half of it. They have some nice shots. I could almost smell the coal smoke. The movement of those counterweights on the outside still fascinates me.

Hasta luego,

Ed

Dougal, I figured you were kidding too, as I was.

Jim, I'll have to go look that up, thanks for letting me know.

George, Tom, and Ed, thanks for the penny Idea! I think I knew that, but I didn't remeber it. I must be getting Halfshiemer's Syndrome.

Want more proof? I have a habit at school. As we switch classes, and sometimes during class, I keep my Mechanical Pencil and my red pen in My ears. One time I was going to go write something down. I couldn't find my pencil. I turned to my classmate sitting next to me, and asked if he had seen it. He said no, and began looking for it around his desk, incase it had rolled or something. Well we spent about 20 seconds looking for it when I was about ready to give up. He walks back towards our desks, and suddenly reaches towards me, and pulls the pencil out of my ear! It's the only time I've done that in the 2 years I've been transporting writing utencils up there.

i finally got a little memo pad thing to log the locomotives i take pictures of down. that will be fun to hopefully fill up.

Around here the eastbound train (NS 261) usualy heads through at 10:00 or 11:00 and the westbound (NS 262) usualy heads by between 4:00 and 6:00, those are my favorite trains besides the Pennsylvania Power & Light unit coal train (which I rarely see).

ya i went out again around 7:45 to look for it. i got back home around 8 and still nothing. so i said the heck with it and started downloading pictures onto the computer. i heard a train come through around 9 then another one again at 9:30 so i don't know what was going on.

now today on the single track siding here there is a crain and a flat car with 4 sections of straight track. must be getting ready to change some track. does this mean no action for a couple days or what? i hope not.

Good Evening Gents

Yes Ed that's me standing in front a stack of Engine tires converted to science gear anchors [:0]

Sorry to here about your computer whoas as I have been there and it can be very frustrating.

Everyone! are any of you having problems with your computers locking up when you click on the shortcut to this sight on your desk top? I'm having to shut down and reboot constantly.

If anyone is interested the following is a website of ship and train photos. The sight is run by a former shipmate of mine. You will also find my latest posting CCGS Edward Cornwallis on there www.shiphotos.com.

Have a good evening

i don't have a shortcut on my desktop, i'm not that into it. i just have it in my bookmarks. no problems with this site at all. have been having a few with railroadforums.com, but they are updating the site so its expected.

Big_Boy, whenever you go out looking for that Triple Crown you should email me when you get back. that way i don't spend a hour waiting and then nothing comes, just joking with you. i might go out in a few minutes to see if anything is coming. i doubt it though. did you hear how long they were going to be running these trains?

good evening everyone.

2 posts in a row looks bad i know.

i had a nice end of the year baseball awards thing tonight. it was a pot luck and the last time to pretty much see the seniors who graduated. not really because i know i'll see them around. i got home from that around 7:30 and sat around. i was thinking about going out and trying to catch the Triple Crown tonight but it was pouring rain. the wind was really bad so that made the rain that much harder. anyways around 8 i heard a whistle and i decided to go out anyways, it was just a light rain by then so it was no biggie. as the train was approaching i realized that normally UP locos don't have flashing lights and don't have something like an American flag on the front. as it got closer i also realized UP locos aren't black. thats when it hit me that it was a Norfolk Southern loco at the helm. i snapped so many shots of that thing because we never see them around here hardly. i went to 3 different spots to get pictures. glad i went out after all.

sorry had to share my little excitment with you. i'm going to be updating my site later tonight so check back later to see the pictures.

Anyone who adds msn messenger will like the convos there. They are a great bunch of guys and Nora is there too. One of these days I will be back there too.

Between Jeff, Mikey, Jay and Kevin you never know what to expect. I feel sorry for poor Nora. Without me she and Joe and Zach (UPTrain) have to try and keep it under control. Lupo gets into the act every now and then. It has been a while since I was there but will be back.

I have about 60 people on my buddy list for msn messenger and most everyone of them has at one time posted in the forums here.

Well I am taking a sick day from work tonight. [:(] This afternoon I dropped off the negatives to get enlargement of the Coast Guard ship and some of the 3985. I was going to drop off some mail at the post office right by Walgreens but somehow made it home with the mail. I was going to make a second trip but forgot to do it until it was too late. [:(] Maybe I have 3/4timers.

Today was a good day for emails from forum members. I received about 5 emails from forum members. [:)] Didn't get any pics tho, but got email. So that is still a good thing. [:D]

Since we were taking about military stuff, let me add this. There is a very good movie out (been out for ages) called, "The Enemy Below". It involves an American Destroyer Escort and a German sub. I saw it over a year ago and really liked it. Enemy At The Gates is a good war movie too and it has some trains in it. The end made me sad tho. [V]

Thanks Dan [:)]

For reminding me about the thread. When I posted about it I kinda thought it was you but I have slept once or twice since then so I wanted to play it safe.

But I wouldn't want anyone to use the wrong glue and screw up the models. [:(]

Talk to you all later. [:)]

It was good talking to you tonight too. [:D]

I am glad that I could introduce you to some new friends. Now during the day maybe you won't be so bored. Plus don't forget to go back to the little list I posted. Some of them are bored during the day too and would love to talk with you.

Well It has been a long day so I think I am headed for bed too.

My computer was being really bad today. I am not happy with it. [:(!]

Well, it's been awhile since I've been here, it took me 2 hours to catch up on the posts! Being at work means interuptions constantly, these people just don't realize that I have something more important to do!
I was going to update y'all on Bill, but lupo stole my thunder. I guess UP runs faster information trains than my Muncie & Western does. Oh well. Bill did mention that the doc looked at his leg and said he didn't see a problem, and Bill pointed to the other one! Kind of shakes that confidence factor, huh?
Welcome to all the new Coffee Shoppites, I know Wedge is a regular on the Trains Forum.
For some reason tonight is VERY busy, not a full moon, don't know what has the people all whacked out. Job security, I guess. On Friday I head to a mountain in Va to camp and 4-wheel for 4 days, no people, no craziness, just friends and trees, so it'll be ok.
Noah- Did I miss the pics of the completed TC? I started on page 59 and read you talking about the water tender and the TC, but if you posted pics of it finished, let me know where to find them. Really looking forward to them.
lupo- All the couplers here are the same, with minor variations. I loved the pic of the little yellow loco, I really love industrial units.
Going to the Trains forum to check in, all of you take extra good care of yourselves, and we will see you again next week.

GOOD MORNING:

The computer problems are sure going around. Sunday night their was a lightening strike at our power pole and it killed the motherboard in the "good" computer. I went upstairs and got the old one bur it wouldn't connect to the internet. I had to get my nehpew over her to get it working. Phones are so much better, I understand how they work and they don't sit there and look at me like i'm stupid because I can't make them work.

On weighting cars:

when I buy tires I always get a few of the old lead weights that they have laying around and either use them as is or work 'em over with a hammer or melt them with the propane torch.

That's my 2 cents for the day, I'm off to get my cup of tea, I hear the teapot calling me.

Have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY

Good Mornin' Everybody,
It's going to be another really good day in the mountains. There's a bunch of stuff to get done today, but that's OK. There's been a fair amount of "Drama" in the last day or two. One of Shawna's friends had a problem that we were able to help a bit with. It changed schedules and made the days turn out quite different from what we had anticipated but that's OK. Life is what happens while you're busy making plans.

Noah, what I've heard is that Walther's Goo used to fasten weights inside a closed car can cause a reaction and soften plastic over time. I've never heard that about CA.

Dharmon and others, I think a little forgetfulness just comes with the deal as we get older. My Mom used to say we'd just have to excuse her, she was having a senior moment.

Hawk05, I'm glad you enjoyed the baseball dinner. Those things can be pretty cool and make for some good memories. So you don't get a lot of NS locos through your area. I think that's a pretty nice scheme. It's certainly not colorful, but I think it's very railroady and professional looking.

Ed, I paint the rails and ties first. I like to do the rough scenery in an area and then go back and add ballast. The effect I try for is that of a line that's been in existence for a good while but which is well maintained. For the rail I use the following mixes, all Floquil:

new rail : 1 part rail brown and 1 part D&H gray
standard rail: 3 parts rail brown and 1 part D&H gray (this color is used the most)
old rail : rail brown
very old rail: rust or a light overspray on top of rail brown

For the ties I use the following, also Floquil:

brand new ties: railroad tie brown ( I use very little of this)
standard ties : roof brown
old ties : 3 parts roof brown and 1 part harbor mist gray
very old ties : 3 parts roof brown and 1 part primer

Color, especially weathered and faded color is very subjective. The amount and type of light you're looking at it under also makes a huge difference. I like the effect that these blends give me under the lighting in my railroadroom, but they might not work for somebody else.

Well folks, it's time to go and get the day started. I think I'll have one more cup of coffee first though. It's really good this morning.

Hope everyone has a great day,
Tom

Phones are so much better, I understand how they work and they don't sit there and look at me like i'm stupid because I can't make them work.

On weighting cars:

when I buy tires I always get a few of the old lead weights that they have laying around and either use them as is or work 'em over with a hammer or melt them with the propane torch.

That's my 2 cents for the day, I'm off to get my cup of tea, I hear the teapot calling me.

Have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY

Ouch that's gotta hurt! We had a strike like that once whie I was at sea. But I was lucky as my wife shut down and disconnected the computer. Though she said it was the eeriest thing A flash, an arc sound (no boom/clap) and the lights died and then every toy in the toy box with lights, sirens or voice box started to go off. The poer company was by the the next day to replace the transformer on the pole in our front. Thart was too close!
