Good Mornin' Everybody,
It's going to be a beautiful day after Christmas in the mountains today. The latest storm seems to have tracked well south of us, down around Augusta and Columbia, SC. The sun is coming up nicely and we're up to about 21 degrees on the front porch.

We had an absolutely wonderful Christmas. It was a little quieter than some we've had because Matt, Jenny and Trav couldn't make it home this year. Matt stayed in Phoenix and Jenny and Trav went to their Mom's in Jacksonville. We talked to all of them and they had wonderful days. One of Shawna's best friends came over and shared Christmas dinner with us, and people stopped by off and on all day. The kitchen is still full of food - "Step Away From The Table" - is really good advice but very hard to do. It was a wonderful day, and we are very blessed.

Scott, you got it just exactly right. The magic is seeing the smile on other people's faces.That's what makes it wonderful.

Paul and Warthogdrvr, you're both right about the guilts. I left Nam on Dec.17,1968 and flew back to Okinawa and then on to El Toro, Ca. I got out of the Marine Corps the morning of Dec.23rd and flew home. I got in at 11:35PM on the 23rd, just in time for Christmas Eve. That was a wonderful Christmas. It was Jenny's first Christmas, and I was home and safe, but my buddies were still over there, and still in harm's way.

RDLKrbyvllRR, I really like the most recent scheme you posted. It's a good color combination and very classy looking.

Lupo and Pennyshoosier, the Christmas greetings are both super. You are both too much! Thank you both.

Better go for now, I'm going to finish carving the mountain this morning and fill some spots with sculptamold, and then get a base coat of paint on it.

actually overhere we always celebrate 2 days of christmas. Had a quiet dinner at my mom yesterday, today we going to friends for a fondue / grill fest [yeah] to fill up any empty space left inside from yesterdays dinner,
so tomorrow i will really feel like "rolling stock"

Good Morning All:

We had a good time yesterday their were nineteen people here for lunch. Six of US took a nap after dinner and for 30 minutes I had a good nap. The fellowship and visiting was very enjoyable.

My sister, Lois, has a fireplace in the den and has two of her grandchildren (ages 5 and 6) living with her. Since September they've wanted to know "when is Grandpa going to burn the house down?" When it got so cold the day before Christmas, Red decided to build a fire. The girls were very upset because the fire would hurt Santa, so before they went to bed Christmas eve they made sure that the fire was out so Santa would be OK .

With us closing the shop between Christmas and New Year I should have some time to work on the railroad, I'm still trying to get those temp wires out of there but it's almost like the goverment; nothing is so permenet as a temp fixture.

Stephanie wanted to know what we talked about for over 2 HOURS. I told her "about everything except should Quebec succede from Canada". It was very enjoyable Christmas present. THANK YOU.

[dinner]A late lunch is due, leftovers of lamb, and more of that pudding. I misscounted yesterday, it was six veggies, and of course the mint sauce for the lamb.

I've painted over all the strange white stuff in the lower yard. 3 different but similar paint mixes gives a bit of variety. Now it's ballast on the main alongside the yard, and then painting the rails. The main line ballast is Woodland Scenics, and I'm not used to that at all. Wish me luck.
Rather than "leaps and bounds", Fergie, I'd say it's more "fits and starts" [(-D]

Happy Sunday all!!!

I trust you all had a great Christmas. Ours was quiet, we had to change our plans at the last minute. My CFO got a bit of a bug and did not feel like going anywhere so we had to cancel dinner at our daughter's house. A couple of hours after we called her she showed up with 2 huge plates of Christmas dinner!!!!!!! a real [angel] she is.

Reports from the family are very good, Seems everyone enjoy their presents.

I haven't been back to the Atlas Forum since it went down in the summer. I'll try to get on tomorrow maybe, and let you know if I have any luck. (If I can remember my password that is! [:O])

It started snowing here at about 9:00 p.m. instead of the 12:00 the TV said to expect. Wind's up, as they said it would be, so we can expect some drifts by morning. Should be rough all day tomorrow. If the power stays on, there may be nothing much else to do but the layout! [;)][:P][(-D]

Funny thing, the Springfield area was susposed to get snow starting Tuesday night (before Christmas) but it never made it to the Springfield area. However, while I was gone Central Arkansas got hammered with snow. A friend of mine check the house for me and left a nice book United States Submarines as a Christmas present. He called me from my house to tell me how bad it was while I was gone. [:)] One time it was nice to not be home. [;)]

I am glad to hear everyone enjoyed Christmas.

I watched a good movie Saturday night called, My Dog Skip. It was a movie with the "old style flair", not much for animations or fancy hi-tec, just a good old fashioned movie that touched the soul and moved the heart. <Yes, Jim can be touched by simple things.> The movie had a "Walton-esk" style to it and really moved my parents too. There wasn't a dry eye in the house when the show ended.

We have so many new people I can not rememer them all but WELCOME to each and every one of you. [:)]


I have been wondering about recognizing the "charter members" of the coffee club. We will have to get BigBoy to define what a charter member is, would it be someone who posted on the very first page, or someone who posted within the first week the "shop" was open, or someone who posted on one of the first 10 pages, maybe someone who posted within the first 100 posts? It will require some thought. Some of the ones who did post on earlier pages are no longer posting. Well some "food for thought", so with that I say, "Good Night." [:)]

Robert- I really like that scheme, does the grey go across the top of the nose or is red?The grey would serve as a glare panel and would look good from the front. Either way, good job.
Ed- the Moon Bus was in 2001: A Space Odyssey, in a minor role, but when I got it for a gift I used it to haul my handpicked team of 1:72 Airfix soldiers around the universe on one of those "5 year missions..." It turned into a 35 year mission, much like Star Trek has, the original crew dried out and crumbled, so I bought a new box of 1:72 men and replaced them, they now sit in a curio cabinet, just waiting for the next call to duty!
So it was down to the 40's, eh? On Friday night I was driving to a get together with Amy's family, and the thermom in the Jeep registered -15. On the way home, in the same area, it hit -25. I think it reads about 4-5 degrees lower than reality, but it still caught my eye. Oh, Amy's dad, (NW retiree) gave me 2 8x10 pics of the NW Bicentennial SD45 and Caboose! I was never crazy about the '76 paint schemes, but I did like the NW's and IC's. I'll be a puttin' em on the wall.

Mornin All [^]

Some sad news on the sports front yesterday as the "minister of defense", Reggie White past away at age 43. Reggie played for the Phily Eagles and Green Bay Packers. He was also elected to the Pro Bowl 13 times. He is known as much for his off the field work as for his football greatness. He was an ordained minister and did much work to help kids. Reggie will be greately missed.

On the local front a suicide in Little Rock is making national news. Well known Dr. Jonathan Drummond Webb, age 45, was found dead Sunday morning. He was world famous for his work at Arkansas Children's Hospital as chief of pediatric and congenital cardiac surgery. In 2002, ABC News featured his work in a four part series about his outstanding success rate--98%. ABC said it was attracted by Drummond-Webb's record at the time: 830 surgeries in 18 months with a 2 percent mortality rate. This death is a setback in the medical field and is effecting many people.

Changing thoughts now and not try to be callus, let's continue.

Well, now that the news and sports is over let's have some weather. The sun is shinning and the current temperature is about 28 degrees. The ground continues to have some left over snow (I would rather have some left over turkey and dressing though) but the predicted high is around 44 so more snow and ice will be melting today.


Well there is much to do:

1) trip out of town to check friend's house and cats [:(] (long drive to get there)
2) clean my house [:(]
3) grocery shopping [:(]
4) drop of film at Walgreens (some railfanning pics [;)] )

Well here we are bobbing at the dock, winds are gusting to 60 knots and the snow is still flying. Never made it home last night for fear of getting stuck and by the looks of it , I won't be going home tonight. The plus side is I got the last of my ore cars decaled, so there is always a plus in a negative situation or as the optimist said as he plumetted down past he 20th floor window just after falling from the roof, "So far, so good!"





These are just a few of the 14 I've done over the last day or two.

"A Child's Christmas in Wales" is one of my favorite Christmas poems/stories. I still have a small paper bound version that I bought a number (as in a lot) of years ago. Unfortunately due to my location or local programming, I haven't seen it on tv in years.

My favorite version was one that I saw back in the early-mid 60's (I think). I'll assume it was a BBC production, but I'm not sure. It was done with black and white still photos, with the narrator's voice reading the story. Very simply done, but I can remember scenes from it to this day. I'd love to be able to find that particular version on tape or DVD someday.

Stephanie wants me to build a new cabnet in the kitchen so she can put more groceries in it so we'll be ready for huricane season and not have to stock up when prices are high and things are in short supply. I'm thinking about buying a portable gen set so if we lose power we can still power up the freezer, ice box and a fan or two to help move the air around.


I get to play all this week so if the track testing doesn't get in the way I'll get some wireing and scenery done. I brought six cieling tiles home from the shop to make a rock cut. This is a new project as I've read about it but never tried it. I'll keep you posted. I also need to decoder another ABBA set of F units so they can be run. I put a DH163AO in both "A"'s and one "B". The other "B" gets a soundtraxx and speaker, when the sounded "B" is running in second place it sounds like the bell and whistele is in the lead unit. I've also found out that if I change out the wheel sets with NWSL wheels, they don't get as cruddy and work better.

I don't know if you've tried the replacement wheels, but you might give it a go. The NWSL wheels are NS. I just went upstairs and looked for the NWSL wheels but I don't remember where they are so I can't give you the part number.

Jim, I did some historical review on the early days of the Coffee Shop, and found that we did exactly 20 pages in one month. It seems rather fitting that anyone with a post during that time should qualify as a charter member.

If you take the time to look back, you will find no real surprises as to who qualifies. 90% are still very active, only a few have slipped off the radar.[8D]

Jim in Cape Girardeau - As for MRRing plans, I got the idea last week of revamping part of the overall size to something that could handle one of the starter layouts that MR has had over the past few years like the Turtle Creek Central os something along those lines.

Trainwreck - Had a great week off - Wife came down with laringitis weekend before XMas, so she was on the quiet side, not to mention home and off from work cause she can't do her job w/out a voice....lucky me. Just what I needed while I was trying to finish up shopping for her.

As for XMas - I went to the in-laws for XMas dinner.. got a 3-in-1 Lexmark Printer/Copier/Scanner from them for present. Got the Dermmel and accessory kit from the CFO and step-son, along with a few other odds and ends, and got a $50.00 gc from my parents to my favorite LHS.... yeah!
