Good evening gents and new comers, a sunny day here today in the land of many hills , and a balmy 4F right now, yes Ed, that is correct, 4 degrees at 5pm EST. It is supposed to hit a low of -8F tonight. We are headed out to celebrate my BD and my wife's husband's BD, one day apart. We are headed to the Salem Cross Inn, in the twon of West Brookfield, Ma, an old farm house that dates back to the time of King Philip War when the house was under attack, but stood the test. It has these old gigantic fireplaces with spindles that turn the sides of beef, it can hold 8 large roasts to slow cook by the fireplace. If any of you guys ever get out this way, I highly recommend this place, it is right on Route 9 about 50 miles west of Boston, and about 20 Miles from Springfield.

We are due for a gig Nor'easter here Saturday night and Sunday. We could get near 20 inches. By the time it travels north to Nova Scotia, John, Fergie and Luc will have snow up to their roofs!!! In fact, that is why the houses have roof hatches up in Canada.

I can see how 4º might be referred to as balmy, but -8º is probably more accurately referred to as "nippy".

Evening all.

Have not been here for a few days, between work and looking after CFO time was not available. I'm off this weekend and plan on doing some work on the funeral home. Got a call from George LHS he had my order and I just had to be stupid enough to go and get it. I left my house at 10 past 5, got to the shop 10 to 6. Now this is only about 10 miles, I forget that this was the dinner time traffic and that we had a storm yesterday..... [:(!][censored][censored][banghead][banghead] If only the 4X4 persons would stop showing off and allow the sane people to drive normally under these conditions, I could have been there in about 20 - 25 minutes.........

Oh! the package?? Walthers sugar refinery, CFO said I looked like a little kid in a toy shop [^][^][^] While there, George showed me the new IHC CPR Hudson, looks good It would need a bit of work but..... Well maybe later in the year CFO will let me have one. She is already asking when the MR renewal will come, she said it would be my father's day present. [swg][swg][swg][swg]

TB - In reference to the clipper, by the time I got home, power was off, it came back about 5:30pm, the roads were slippery but if one drove carefully very few problems were encountered. The biggest problem was those in 4X4 speeding and winding down in a ditch.

Elliot - Will your layout ever be finished in this life time? [(-D] Seriously I envy the s[ace you have, Good work. Hey!!! Nice engine OOOOOOOOOHHH! I'm very partial to CPR Hudsons.

Today was a really good day in the mountains. I got all the chores and odds and ends done, and had time to get the trees finished and ready to plant. Tomorrow the ladies are going shopping and I'm going to take the day to work on the railroad. It's a bit early for Arbor Day in the real world, but not in the basement. It's going to be fun.

JP, I'd second the motion to try to negotiate space for a shelf layout in one of the bedrooms. You can get a lot of railroading on 16" wide shelf. Normal scale is also a possibilty. I really like Horribly Oversized, but Normal packs a lot more railroad into a given space. I'm not going to mention Zimpossible because my eyes don't focus that small anymore. I hope you can work something out that keeps you out of the armchair.

Big Boy, That's a nice sized layout space. Good looking benchwork too. You're right about the benchwork not having to be furniture quality. It just has to work.

Teffy, when will you hear about the mediation team? That sounds like something worth doing. Lord knows there's a need for it, and all over. Let us know more about it. Has the grafitti team decided what it's going to do?

Fergie, "Basic Black" is always in style.

Ed, sounds like a pretty good 1st prize for this time of the year. Is 2nd prize 2 weeks up there? All prizes must be claimed before March 1st.

In over 30 years in Canada I've yet to live in a house that had one of those hatch things. Our present home does have a series of steps or foot holds up one side of the roof, but that's just to help the moose across! [:D][;)][:P] The local TV station says to watch out for a really nasty storm that will probably happen on Sunday. The Weather Channel local forecast for Halifax says only60% probability. So, confusion reigns, but we prepare for teh worst. It's a system from Dakota that will follow the jet stream to the Carolinas, and then head north gathering power as it comes our way. Oh Joy![V]

I knew that real food had to be lurking somewhere behind all that deep fried coffee and soup! They are very partial to deep fried Mars Bars in Glasgow, Scotland, so I understand.[dinner] One of the sad things about getting older is seeing the size of something you remember as a kid getting smaller and smaller. Mars bars are a case in point. They are now tiny compared to the real thing. Sweets (candy in North America) were still rationed for years after the war in the UK. One Mars bar had to last the girl who was later to become my wife a week. How would you like to try that with today's fiddly little things?

Good evening gents, Bob, don't you know that we have a Mormon now for Governor? I thought it would be nice to make him feel at home and have a few more wives..[:D][:D][}:)][}:)] Actually, Im was in such a rush with that last coffee break, the other couple was out in the car tooting. Man...it pays to proof read, the troops are all over me!!!
What I was trying to say was, my wife and I were going out to celebrate my BD, and her cousin and her husband who has a BD a day after mine, came with us.
There is nothing that can beat slow roasting a sides of beef by abig old fireplace. And, we got to go on a sleigh ride under a near full moon through the woods and meadows, watching the deer in the pine groves.
Tim, there are "some" advantages of being in the north country. And, we had hot cider afterward, spiked with Captain Morgan Rum.......after that, we didn't feel the cold at all. It was -4F on the sleigh ride, but we all had big wool blankets to keep us very warm.

Got the first 9 sheets of plasterboard mounted in the train room, now we have to make another run to HD for the last 8 sheets. Also ran a Cat5 cable and a Quad6 TV cable to the room, might as well do this now while the walls are open.

Tomorrow we prepare for the big Nor'easter, gas for the SB, Pam for the shovels and SB shoot, make sure we have extra shear pins. The wife will get the "goodies"[;)][:P][:)]

Here are the latest photos from the construction zone. I never do things in a Normal way. Everything with me is Overkill. None of that wimpy cork roadbed, that's one of the things I use foam for. Like Fergie, no PINK for me. I am using brown paper towels and a glue solution to cover it up.

Well the high was 78 today and tomorrow it's supposed to be a high of 42. That figures as I have a bunch to do outside. We took another load of pecans to the buyer last Saturday. Got $1.25 per pound. I'd like to pick all weekend but with the temp as low as it's suposed to be I don't know. Any wind at all would be a killer.

Tim; When working out track planes in full size I have taken a piece of clean paper, laid it on a turnout and made a rubbing with a pencil. You can make a several rubbings of turnouts in different sizes and trim them out. Than just lay them out where the turnout is supposed to locate. This is much cheaper than buying a bunch of stuff and finding out that you don't need it. This also works with crossings.

Fergie; great that you are learning all that life saveing skills. To bad they don't give lessons in using soldering irons. Just kidding.

I had a roof hatch put in the roof when we had a new roof put on a few years ago. I did it so as to get easy access to the chimney and TV antena. One of the smartest things I've done. I also put non-skid strips down to give me a little help staying on the roof.

Mary Ann and I went to the banks party last night. Turned out it was a VIP event. We got to hob nob with a bunch of the big wigs. Kind of supprised us to be in that crowd. Also didn't realise that we knew so many of them. I guess that comes with age.

I got Mary Ann's tractor fixed tonight. She was very happy about that. I may even be able to sleep in the house tonight.

Fergie; Have you ever done any Tipi living? I've got 2 lodges. I used to set up often out at my sons place. I'd keep one up most of the time so I could just roll in and not have to spend the time putting up the lodge. It's got to be the best way to camp that I know of. There is nothing as good as waking up on a frosty morning, reaching out of the buffalo robe and poking the fire to life and than just lying there and watching the sun come up through the smoke hole. Now that I've thought about it I may have to get one out and set it up.

JP; Where there is a will there is a way. When I was in Viet Nam I built two layouts. Both HOn3 and small switching layouts, but layouts . I also built a modular layout that fit in a foot locker when I was in flight school. When the Tac NCO saw it he just shock his head and turned around and went on down the hall. So hang in there and use your imagination.

I guess I'll head to bed. When I started writing this there were five off us on. Now everyone else has bailed out, so Geronomo.

To all of you other less important people (just kidding): I'm currently doing a new HPV and need some suggestions for names. BLI has told me that if there is enough intrest in a Model Railroader RSD15 or a GDRMCo RSD15 (I really want to see this one made) BLI will consider doing either one or both so start emailing BLI and tell them that you would be interested in a MR or GDRMCo RSD15 being produced. I have included a drawing of the GDRMCo RSD15. The reason behind me asking for a GDRMCo RSD15 is that this year will be GDRMCo's 10th anniversary so I thought it would be good to see something with GDRMCo written on it.

This confirms my suspicions as it was recently rumoured Fox was toying with a new reality show called "Wimp Factor" where they'd put a bunch of Southern boys in the Arctic to see who could survive the longest. But when the Execs looked at it, it was decided not to proceed as no one would make it past the first show. Oh well[;)]

BTW Phil the temp is on the rise as it's only -12 (10F) with a -33c wind chill. I have to go out and take down the Christmas lights and bring in a cord of wood before tomorrows storm. I best put on a T shirt so not to catch a chill. Too bad as the sun reflecting off the snow makes for a nice tan[8D]

JP, if you do get that small of a place, you probably could benefit from looking up that Iain Rice book I mentioned earlier (Small, Smart & Practical Track Plans - Kalmbach, ISBN #0-89024-416-2). And for inquiring minds, I am not employed by Kalmbach and do not own any stock in them. [:D] But I do think Rice’s book is a good idea mine for those of use who are - ‘geometrically challenged’ for places for a layout. Even if you don’t use the plans, there’s several useful ideas he presents in the early part of the book (before the plans start). My [2c].

Ed - ROTFL! Would that trip to the Motel 6 be in the middle of one of their snowstorms? And -8 degrees might be balmy for BigBoy or our Canadian Clubbers (not to be confused with...), with the temps they’re used to!

Well, I was busy shoveling, but after lunch, it’s modeling time!! I did get the final siding laid yesterday, so, aside from working out the kinks, and maybe another repositioning of the buildings, The final track has been laid. Or, in the ARK fake history, the line has been fully rehabilitated.

I want to get everything but the roof done this weekend on that darn building, so I better get going. Give me a Mitchell special, and I’ll get going again.

Der - I'm not giving up. Just because I have not mentioned any 'major' arguments layely, does not mean that the big "D" has been avioded. We just don't argue anymore and have come to accept the fact that we'll be splitting once the lease is up. The layout project , etc are just on hold till after that and I get my own place this summer.

Ed - NEVER will I go to Normal (no offense to the Normal clubers!)! No chance for one of the bdrms either as step son has too many toys! And no chance for a corner of one as she don't want it in our room, step son wants his for he, him, and himself, and as it stands, he's got so many toys, that if/when we/she/him move, he's got to get rid of alot of those toys anyways and he's not too happy about it.

Fergie, they have unlimited long distance now for around 22 a month. If you need more info, email me. My wife talks for hours to our friends all over the country. Also most cell phones have unlimited after a certain time. That is how I do my long distance. Weekends are unlimited so you can chat 24/7 if need be. And the price, FREE. Fits my budget. [:p]

Jim in the Cape, how do pronounce Girardeau, thanks for caring about how coooooooollllllllllllddddddddd it get. We actually get down into the low 40s at night, so it is chilly. During our heatwave last week it got down to upper 30s, so we had a 55 degree drop from day to night.

Paul, my mom is from Duluth, she wants to know how things are up there. How close are you to Duluth. Glad to see the tractor is fixed. Woo Hoo.
