Weather is lousy outside, so it must be time to try out the new engines that I got for Christmas. Wife was nice and let me order what ever I thought I needed so I got 2 Athearn rtr CF-7's and an athearn GP 35 . they came on dec.23. They are giving me the incentive to get the layout back in action. So bad weather will help me get going on it.

Well folks, I am a glutten for punishment. [:(] Last night and tonight I had a post almost finished and was going back and forth getting links and such and happened to click the wrong thing and lost long posts both nights. I can't blame it on the computer, I did it. [:(!] [V] [:(]

So after losing the original post I guess this one will be much shorter than the first one was going to be.

To those who are interested in the Alco PA saga, here is the latest photo showing the progress to the PA.

Car 54 Where Are You ? [;)]

I was emailed a spoof of a mastercard commercial featuring the Red Sox. The language isn't bad but one of the "thoughts" they were expressing isn't what I would pass along. So I won't be sharing that commercial with anyone.

We have a 17 mph wind making our wind chill 29 right now. So once again I am cold. I feel for all of you getting snow and ice. Just remember I didn't wish it on anyone and don't throw your snow or ice balls this way. (Probally would melt before they got here anyway. [;)] )

Henry instant messaged me today and said every tree in his yard had ice damage. The trees sure take a beating during an ice storm. [:(]

Well the x-ray on my arm showed it was not broken. It does show a large area of bruising which may or may not reach the surface. The doc said it will be painful for about one more week. He said the knot would start dowing down soon and after about 10 days to 2 weeks should be gone. I really banged it up this time though. [:(] [:(]

Well my pain meds are kickiing in so I will be off to bed.

Good Morning everyone. [:)]

I don't know about you all, but I am looking forward to a hot cup of coffee on a cold morning after my nap. See yall. [;)]

Morning All

Well the temps dropped down to -11c (12 F) last night but is now on the rise. I'm now on leave for a few daze until I go on course again and yes daze is what I meant. Anyway I started the CV programming on the 2-8-0 and made some progress but will ask what others what CVs they have for Chuff and speed (CV25 and CV 121).

James: Glad to hear it's not broke. I've been there I broke my leg in a liquor store parking lot once, No it wasn't what your thinking! I was on way to work (7:00 a.m.) one cold January morning when I walked on the only peice of ice around. Well to make a long story short I found myself on the ground, in pain and late for work. So instead of arriving late and getting dressed down by the Old Man I walked over to the Hospital, where after X-rays was told "it's broke". I was off work for three months. Sad thing was I wasn't into MR'ng at the time so I wasted my time doing nothing but studying. A truly sad tale.

And BTW page two again!!

Bob: A little something is on its way today for you.

Later Gents and watch out for the Henweighs!

Good Morning All:

Not much going on today. As you would guess I turned the heaters and pilots off two days ago because we had the AC on and this morning the house was so cold I didn't want to get out of bed.

Fergie:
Ed's not here so you need to get one of the new guys to ask about the henweighs.

I'm going to get my second cup of tea and get out of here.

Ya'll have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY

Guys- I'm usually a very private person. However there comes a time when I have to
ask for help and now I'm asking that you all put my wife ,Debbie, on your prayer list.
Have a drs. appt. Feb.15 for her. And guess what, I have to see my cardioligest today.
Stay well is the best advice you can get.

Fergie... Powell Transport, Inc. is not for sale now, nor ever! As for takeovers, I almost had a 'hostile' bid come in from the CFO, but that has since been rescinded! YEAH!

Greyfox - Got about 3-4 overnight, and it's still coming down. Supposed to change over to Sleet/Freezing rain by noon, then all rain by 6/8pm. D%$@ winter is pissing me off!

Lawrence, I'm with you, we've got about 6 inches of snow out there on the ground, and I don't have school!!!!!!!! The last of it just quit, and I just finnished shoveling it up too. I've been busy the past few days.

Well, I don't have much else, but I got to read my TRAINS and my MR that came on the first, this is the first time I've actually had to read it. I guess I'll get going then.

TEFFY - my house is that cold MOST mornings! I've got these electric baseboard heaters but I've got an irrational fear of them starting my furniture on fire!! So I use the woodstove when i'm awake, but when I go to bed things cool off and by the time to get up, BRRR!

Brrr is right, 23F this morning and another 5 inches fell last night to add to the 2 inches yesterday. The freezing rain/ice line is now up to the Mass/CT border, which is 20 miles south of my 20. Squirrels have gone back into hyber, now the birds have the feeders in peace today.
JP, I fear that the winter has only just begun!!

Fergie, get ready buddy, this storm is building off the coast and headed northeast to NS!!

Almost lunch time here, just got in from shoveling out the wolf and feeding her, she loves the snow.

Ed, thanks for getting up at 1am and putting the 1st pot of hot coffee on the woodburner, it sure hit the spot after an hour of shoveling, but the toast was cold!!!

Time to get the noon weather report out to channel 4 (WBZ) in Boston and a light lunch, hopefully the ice will not make it the next 20 miles north to this 20.

Good morning all !

Jim glad the arm is ok, a broken wing will slow down many things.

Fergie, brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, come to SoCal at least during the day its warm here. Compared to there it might even be swimming weather for you.

To all of you having snow, thanks for convincing me I don't need to leave my itty bitty 1000 sq ft house in SoCal. I wanted to move, as it is now almost 500k for this house, but at least we don't get that white stuff all over the place.

Have a great day.

Thanks Terry !

JohnP: Sounds like that pattern is headed our way starting tonight. We just hope it's into its rain phase by the time our daughter and the grandkids set out for here after school tomorrow.

Flip: Your concern is now on the CCCC prayer chain. Hope the apt. goes well today, and we are praying for Debbie too.

Jim: Tough way to have to get to sleep [|)][(-D] Next time try warm milk! Hope it all clears up soon.
Speaking of warm milk, sorta, we finished off the huge batch of eggnog that Kris had made using it as coffee creamer. The nutmeg gave the coffee something extra. Anybody else tried that? [C=:-)]

Plywood pannels are all cut, and the second coat of white paint is drying. Should get them up under the upper yard this aft., and then the mini-lights go on. Then I should be able to see how the sceniced lower yard really looks[X-)]

This being 12th. Night, the decorations all came down this morning. Everything is boxed and stored for another year [sigh] The lights on the garage and on Rosie-the dog's house and tree stay up all year, so that's less to do.[^]

How come we're on page 2 when there have been 2 pages added since I left last evening? [%-)]

Hi Robert, I just got in from trying to shovel, I don't think the snowblower can handle it, as we received about an inch of ice on top of the 7 inches of snow!! It "warmed up to 31 degrees, but I am sure it will head back down real soon.
I did manage to get some work done on the train room, I got about half the cement wall painted with moisture sealer, before I stud the walls, I don't want moisture on the walls when summer comes.
Thanks for leaving a doughnut Tobert, boy was I hungry...ahhhhhh, some hot cider too, did you bring that Ferggie?
I smell food, time for chow, see ya later guys,

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

I’ve been on kind of a posting hiatus these past few days. But I have been trying to (more or less) keep up with the news here. Seems like there are so many new members and so many posts that it’s hard to keep track of what’s going on. I suppose that’s part of the price of popularity.

Hello to all the new patrons here at the shop. I don’t even remember which ones of you are so new that I haven’t met you yet, so I’ll just throw out a general welcome. [#welcome]

Only minor progress on the layout too, unfortunately. [:(] I have been doing some running testing. I think I feel a spurt of activity coming on, but it’s hard to tell. Could still be a month or so off. Maybe I need to un-retire. I think I’m getting lazier each day. [:0]

Weather continues warm down here. Up in the 80’s again today. [8D] Back to shorts and sandals. We went out to the orange grove again today (we have a few acres of oranges down here). This is the first year we have had a decent crop. It’s been a kick going out each week, filling up the Blazer with oranges, and having fresh orange juice all week. Orange juice was an expensive luxury for me growing up, so I’m really enjoying being able to drink my fill of it now.

Seems like the Coffee Shop continues to be linked to Med Center. Phil(Fla) glad to hear your checkup went well, hope whatever problem Debbie has gets resolved in a positive manner. Robert, glad your father is back out of the hospital. I note that grayfox’s better half is down with a cold. Jim, glad the arm isn’t broken, but you’ve really got to watch out on the job. (Or are you just doing it for the pain meds?) And I guess we just missed another OSHA Recordable when Fergie’s soldering iron missed his lap and just got the rug!

Jim, I see you’re still having trouble with disappearing posts. Should I recommend once again that you write the long ones in Word, or would you rather that I just dropped the idea? btw, you could share that Red Sox commercial with me, I don’t get offended easily. In fact, I have to make a special effort to watch what I say on this forum.

Fergie, what’s a he………., oh, wait, I remember.

Karl, Whidbey Island must be a great place to be stationed. Wish I had known you a year or two ago. During my last couple of years before retirement I was involved in a project up at the Shell Refinery in Anacortes. We used to fly up there every month or two. I had the pleasure of driving around Whidbey a couple of times.

QUOTE: der: Speaking of warm milk, sorta, we finished off the huge batch of eggnog that Kris had made using it as coffee creamer. The nutmeg gave the coffee something extra. Anybody else tried that?
Actually I have used eggnog in coffee a couple of times. Unfortunately you can’t get it commercially down here. How’s Kris’s recipe?

QUOTE: This being 12th. Night, the decorations all came down this morning.
Today’s the official end of the holiday season down here also. We’ll probably take the stuff down this weekend.

All that talk about squirrel got me to thinking back on the one time that I ate some. Back in ’69 I was working on a project in West (by God!) Virginia. A couple of guys off my survey crew took me squirrel hunting. I’m not much of a hunter, but they bagged a few. Later back at one of the guy’s homes, they fried up some. Tasty, but small. I don’t have anything against hunting, it’s just not something I do. But I’m always ready to accept a gift from any friend who cares to share, be it a bit of venison, a duck, pheasant, or what have you. Now Teffy, I’m not sure I’d want to save up all your ‘porch kill’ until I get up there this spring.

Okay, that’s all for now. Hope I haven’t missed responding to too much stuff that was aimed my way.

Got to run, think I may need to turn the air conditioning back on tonight! [:D]

Hasta mañana,

Ed

I don't know, but I think it's got something to do with the myth of invincability that comes with the owners manuals for those things.[:D]

Good Evenin' Everybody,
it was another warm but rainy day in the mountains today. This is very unusual for January. The weatherguessers say it won't last much longer and then winter will be back. I hope everybody that's dealing with lots of snow, and particularly ice, is doing OK. Up here in the mountains, we usually get snow, but over in the Greenville, SC to Charlotte and Raleigh NC area they get lots of ice. I used to work over there a lot, and I didn't like ice at all. Take care, everybody.

I didn't get much railroading done today. There were just too many odds and ends to take care of. Tomorrow should be different. With any luck, I'll get the ballasting finished and take a look at the tree material.

Jim, how's your arm doing? I'm glad it's not broken, but a really bad bruise can be almost as painful.

Teffy, I've got a pair of the Southern E-6's, but I'll check around and see if anybody else is looking for some. They're really nice. As you may recall, last Spring, we were having lots of fun with squirrels and the bird feeders. I found some "Squirrel proof" seed. It's laced with capasin, which is the active ingredient in hot peppers. The birds have no taste buds, so it doesn't bother them, but the squirrels really don't like it and they only try it once. Problem solved. It's not as easy to find as regular seed, but I think it's worth looking for.

Flip, we'll keep both of you in our prayers. Let us know how it goes.

Fergie, I checked and on my Soundtraxx steam decoders I've not changed those two CV's. Are you using the "Autochuff" feature or are you using the synchro cam? On most of my decoders, the default is to autochuff, but I've got one on which the default was to the cam, and I had to change that.

Better go for now. It's getting late.
Have a great evening, everybody,
Tom

QUOTE: Actually I have used eggnog in coffee a couple of times. Unfortunately you can’t get it commercially down here. How’s Kris’s recipe?

It's meant to be low fat, and low sugar, but will work fine with regular ingredients. Basically, you just about but not quite make a custard, and chill it.

6 eggs
1 litre low fat cream (we used 10% cream as fat isn't an issue in my case)
sweetener or sugar to taste
Vanilla to taste
Nutmeg (fresh ground preferably)to taste

Whisk up the eggs and sweetener, add the cream, vanilla and nutmeg.

In a good slowcooking saucepan slowly heat the mix, stirring or whisking all the time until the temperature is 71 degrees C (Jam thermometer) You are after NOT cooking the eggs hard,or making custard.

Remove from heat, let cool a while before refrigerating ( or use it to defrost the fridge [(-D])
Serve chilled.
[C=:-)]

Going to see if I can get my minilights up under the upper yard, the pannels went up very smoothly, and I even remembered to put down papers on the lower yard before slopping the water based contact cement around! [:D] The Handy Man's Secret Weapon is my first choice to hold the lights, as a staple gun will shake the upper yard to bits[B)]
