Greg, the thing is that here in the Coffee Shop you're dealing with a small subset of all the people who post on the General Discussion Forum. We have only about 20 regulars. No, no Okies yet. Now if you ask that question out on the main General Discussion Forum I'm sure there are others there. The reason that sometimes people think the Coffee Shop is bigger that it actually is, is that this thread has been going continuously for 6 months. That's how we've racked up so many posts/views. But in any particular day we may have from 5-30 posts. So the traffic and audience is somewhat limited.

Good Evening Everybody,
It was a good day in the mountains today. Hanging the fascia boards is progressing well. I've only got 3 more panels to cut and fit. Then I can run the Loconet cables and mount the UP-3 panels and then it's time for SCENERY. I'm looking forward to it. I've also got a Spectrum light mountain disassembled on the workbench and I'm looking at photos to pick out which one I want to do. Got to have something to pull the Branchline coaches, and it has to be Southern green.

Steve and Greg, welcome to the coffee shop. The coffee and tea are always hot and always good, and the conversation is good too. Stop in often and visit.

Greg, the P2K GP9's are supposed to be excellent. I don't run any of them, but I have a pair of their GP7's running and I really like them. I'm in Horribly Oversized too.


Der and Fergie, that sounds like quite a storm. I'm glad you all came through it OK. That drive doesn't sound like any fun at all. Fergie, did the other people make it in OK?

Bill, welcome back to the coffee shop. I know you've been really busy, but it's good to see you here again. The layout sounds like it will be super. I'll look forward to seeing the Sharks in L&N colors. The Southern didn't run mikados and light mountains into Murphy, but on my version of history they did. Let's see, the first rule is: It's My Railroad. I think that pretty well covers it.

Lupo, I'm jealous. My January MR might be here in another 2 or 3 weeks. It sounds like another good one.

Paul, I can't believe the bad luck you're having with the 2-8-0's. Don't give up on them. They really are super little locos. I've got 2 of them up and running and they're great. Keep trying, the good ones are out there.

Teffy, I hope your Mom's cataract surgery went well.The surgery and the recovery are a lot quicker and easier than they used to be, but it's still surgery and no fun. Louise and Shawna have both had it done on both their eyes, and I remember. I hope it went very well and your Mom recovers quickly.

I'd better go for now, it's getting late and tomorrow will be busy. I've got one small tree to take down and then I need to rototill the area for the Asian garden we're going to put in. If I get that done quickly enough I'll get the rest of the fascia hung.

Hi All

I was on for 3 minutes tonight before AOL booted me off. The phone lines come and go but they were fine at the time.

After trying to report my phone problems for three weeks I finally was able to get through and report them.

The B I G news here is the opening of the Clinton Presidential Library on Thursday. Both former Presidents Clinton and Bush will be here and there is much excitement in the area.

I started a thread in the Trains.magazine forum because the old Rock Island Depot was saved and is being used as part of the new library complex.
It is an ok looking building but nice that it is being used.

Tom, I just passed the same point you're at. Scenery is fun, mainly because anything goes. If you make a mistake, a little more spraypaint will usually fix it. Thanks for the info on the Geeps, I'll look into them. Same problem here, a couple of locos apart on the workbench slowly getting all of the parts mixed up so I'll never get them back on the right one.

Just dropped back in for a hot choccy before bedtime, and caught your item. It reminded me that Model Trains were briefly mentioned, and even with a video clip, on CNBC today. It was an article on Lionel filing for Chapter 11 bankcruptcy protection. The company's business is sound enough it seems. The problem is they have lost an action about misappropriation of designs, or something, and have to find $41 million!!!! Ouch, that'll leave a mark! Haven't heard anything else about this. Doubtless there's a thread or twoon it "out there", but I don't go on the rest of the forum these days. The coffee and company is just too good to miss in here.[^]

As is too typical with me, I don't think I ever properly introduced myself. So my apologies for that.

My name is Lawrence and I'm a Hoosier. I have a small layout (8x11) at our cottage that I get to about every other weekend. It is freelanced Pennsy and it features K4 (I LOVE K4s!). I also have a modest test track set up at home, where I fiddle with engines and rolling stock the other times (when I'm not traveling). Because of the distance to my layout, I spend alot of time tuning my stock and working on weathering, etc. In another topic I mentioned that I'm thinking of upgrading my airbrush. I spend so much time on this aspect, I should really take the plunge and get a really good model. So any suggestions?

Anyway, model railroading keeps me sane in what is otherwise a totally chaotic life.

Teffy; Sorry to hear about your mom. My mother had that surgery and it turned out great. She really could see better. My wife's name is Mary Ann. I tried to call the folks that I got the 2-8-0 from today. I got there machine, so left a couple of messages. I hope to hear from them before the GATs show.

Ed; Both the 2-8-0s were new. The first just didn't run well at all. The second has a broken stud that the screw holding the rear of the boiler and cab down screws into. It can't really be repaired. I'll keep on trying to get a good one. I could keep the one I have now and be carefull picking it up. I'd like to get a couple more.

Didn't we have a young fellow from Oklahoma here? Seems like it wasn't too long ago.

Flip; Thanks for the info on your track cleaning car. I'll look for one.

Tom; I'll keep trying to get this thing with the Spectrums worked out. I've seen some running at train shows and I agree they do run well. This one runs good and if it wasn't for the loose boiler there wouldn't be a problem. One other thing that I noticed about both the locomotives is that when they are coupled close the wireing harness between the loco and tender lifts the front of the tender off the track. Did you have that problem,and if so how did you handle it?

Noah; Boy am I glade that I'm not in your snowshoes. Get in your canoe and point it south I'll leave word at the Texas border to let you in.

Good Morning All:

Last night was a good evening, I put some more supports under the roadbed (as Tom suggested) in preparation for cutting the track and installing a trestle. I think that I'm going to do like Tom and just cut the roadbed to suit and put in a temparery track.

I've got to find some ceiling tiles for a rock cut around the drill track as it's close to a station on the main line that is about 1 3/4" higher. A rock gives me crediability as to having the two tracks that close together at that differance in height.

Do you live in a retirement community? I just scanned (looked at) the new pictures of the track and it looks a lot better then what I took before, thanks for the advise. Now to get them up-loaded tonight.

Good Morning all. That wind is still with us, but abated a bit. It wasn't a very unusual storm, just earlier than expected. For instance, the snow clearing budgets of the municipalities don't kick in until Dec 1. The Department of Highways snow clearing is set to start Dec 5th. So, the effects of the storm were far worse than would have been the case had it ocurred in the winter. Also, it stalled, so there was a great deal more snow than the forecast (which was mainly for rain) indicated.

Glad to say the well insulation project is done. Lots of off cuts of 1" foam for the layout [:-^][swg] It's one of those jobs that should have been done in the summer, but who wants to waste good weather doing chores?

Kris is off to the Harbour with her mom for a Dr. appointment, so I'm in charge.[:-,]
Looks as if I might get more building done on that access hatch.[yeah]

Just picked up a little stainless steel sided typical looking diner (restaurant, not a rail car) - a real old kit - and I'm naming it the "Coffee Shop" and will have a little sign that reads "Lousy food, but great conversation" right on the siding near the entry.

Hope to stop by here more often from now on, as I enjoy the company, and the coffee's great. A warm welcome to all the newbees here. Lots of friendly folks. No flamers allowed ! First offense - do the dishes. Second offense - take out the trash. Third offense - clean the cat box, and you only get served decaf from now on. . .

Plus, I cant go to another persons house and do the work there. Thats not the way I get down. I wouldn't be able to focus correctly. And my weathering process is like real life-- it happens over a long time.

Afternoon all -
Well, the on again / off again CFO has approved of me spending some more $$$ for a 5 gal bucket of Joint Compound.

We're trying to work things out... past weekend was good - no fights, etc.

Read in our Sunday paper on the 8th about how one of the 'higher-ups' in the FRA is also a MAJOR stockholder in UP and the field investigators for the FRA are being told to 'go easy' on the UP everytime they investigate a incident involving UP.

Heard a story on Fox News yesterday about a lady in the Pittsburgh PA area suing a RR claiming that the tracks were not marked as being active! In response, the news anchor at the end of the story said ' Lady, beware.... Cars driving on streets!'

Wish I had my digital camera Friday... saw a CSX freight as it was leaving the DeWitt yards w/ 3 loco's...3rd one was a C39-8 w/ CSXT reporting markings and the big Conrail Logo and symbol.

Seems as I now need to look into getting a page on Railimages.com so I can post pics of layout table progression and of the real ones I see by the house and at the yards. Over the past weekend, there were BNSF, UP, and CSX loco's doing the switching at the CSX yard in DeWitt NY.

Just in on Fox News... Feds to increase safety checks of UP......hope it works!

Well, time to leave work. I may check in later tonight...but doubtful. If not, I'll check in tomorrow while here at work.

Teffy - I may consider making resin copies of the little diner after I kitbash it into a slightly larger structure and add some 'character' to it. Too bad we couldn't get pictures of all the coffee shop patrons and place them in the windows like the old tinplate passenger car models from long ago. I know, I know, who says we couldn' !!

More threads than you care to look at, I’m afraid. I ducked most of that just like the threads on “I hate the UP for its licensing practices”. But one of the Lionel/MTH threads garnered about 250 posts in only a week or so. That was (at the time) about 10% of the number of posts here in the Coffee Shop in six months! Whether or not they were guilty, you’ve got to wonder about the amount of the award for ‘damages’. I thought our courts just went that crazy on medical claims.

Paul, that’s tough when new locos have problems like that. A number of recent steam releases in N had a lot of problems when they first came out. Most have been improved on subsequent releases. But now I tend to read the forums to see how the community reacts to the new releases and what they report before running out and buying anything new. Heck, even my Spectrum 2-8-0 has to go back because of too narrowly gauged wheels. And it ran great on the test track.


Teffy – Good luck with your Mom’s eye surgery tomorrow. Hope things go well.

No, we just live in a little town on the coast. I doubt that there are a dozen expats in the entire area. I’ve met two, but they claim there are 8-10 others. The really big expat communities are up in the central part of the country. There are supposedly 60-70,000 Americans and Canadians living around Lake Chapala, just south of Guadalajara. Another 6-10,000 in San Miguel de Allende. Lots more, principally in the north part of Baja California (just south of San Diego), and along the eastern shore of the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) down as far as Puerta Vallarta. As much as has been written up in the press lately about retiring in Mexico, those areas are seeing a lot of new interest, with the resulting rise in housing prices.

Good idea. A lot of the guys here have accounts there. It’s usually pretty reliable. I know they’ve had some problems lately with their dedicated server. They just posted that they’re going to change to a different server. Shouldn’t cause any problems although it may mean a short downtime when they make the switch. They’re still working out the details.
