Some ce cream for the stranger? Been BUSY, too much to keep up. And what's this, the 12th version? Ugh. Oh well. Let;s see. Dad's HOPEFULLY done with this round of Chimo. We'll see what the scan on the 13th says on the 19th.

In other news, 3 weeks of school, My SAT is this Saturday (Ugh) and the AP test for my College Creditable High School US History is Friday. Date set by that wonder-flipping full government that decided that Friday was agreat day. Not liek we have a FLEX DAY there or anything that I could have been off for... I'm not bitter. Banged Head

Ray (Howmus),

I'm glad to hear you folks are getting some rain. We drove up to Seneca Lake yesterday for our Spring wine run, and it was mentioned a couple of times about how dry it was. Driving home today, we hit rain South of Erie and were almost to Pittsburgh when we finally saw some clear weather. So hopefully it will have drifted over your way. Anything to help with the grapes is good...

I got lucky yesterday and was able to catch a Finger Lakes train. I had just stepped out on the deck at the Glenora Inn about 4:45 pm when I spotted them below me headed North out of Watkins Glen. A quick dash to the parking lot and a zip up Route 14 resulted in a couple of photos at the crossing. Four hoppers and a box car pulled by one of the B23-7's running in reverse. The boxcar was a Wellsboro & Corning Railroad. I had never even heard of that line before.

Late night for me... a cup of tea before I turn in please.

As others have said... Welcome Ole Timer, yes we talk about trains.. We share what we have with others....WE DON"T criticize what may seem to be non-prototypical modeling. WE don't nit-pick about brands or what is best.. WE enjoy MRRing on the level we are each able to achieve.  Some of us are beginners, some dreamers..... some very well established professional modelers.. So, welcome.  Stop in when you can, say hello, share your hobby with us and by all means have a piece of pie and a cup of coffee.

We also talk about our personal lives... as has also been said.  We share in each others experiences, sympathize with our friends troubles, and applaud their successes..  We are in short, friends and neighbors who have something in common, model trains..the rest just happens.  Oh, I hope you do like pie... it's popular here!

Evenin, Large Dr Pepper please thanks. (glug, glug, glug) Refill please. Thanks. Panic has struck!!!! The perfect wife is taking the day off work tomorrow to set up for the garage sale. The gig is up! I'll have to actually do something or ....! I've only got a limited amount of time to cover for myself on all the things I haven't done. Oh my, the pressure! Another refill please. Thanks

I didn't go to the FLHS today, not in the end of the month budget. Oh well, I still have scratch building and scenery supplies and a couple of buildings to build and a few box car kits I haven't started so I figure I'm set for a while really. I have decided on a 4-4-0 for my nostalgia excursion train starting from the old western tourist trap town. I think that should have no probs on the couple of tight curves. Only thing is the picture of the loco in the Trainworld add in MR is different than the Bachmann website. Hmm Guess I'll have to do more research on what I'd really get. I want the one pictured in the Trainworld add. It has the spark arrestor (I think that's what it is) stack on it.

Rob- Buddy I would GLADLY send it all to you. Already 2 weeks behind in planting and it doesn't look good until the middle of May. Hopefully they got all the life jackets on the little bitty bit of corn that did get planted.

Mark- Oh our little school (about 300 in the high scool) wasn't all that strict. Just respectful. I also did not know what peer pressure was until my own kids teachers, some were the ones I had also, educated me on it. "Things aren't the same anymore" they said. We had our problems for sure, but if someone chose not to participate, well that was cool and everyone pretty much got along. I miss those days.Sigh

Ole Timer-  Sign - Welcome. Yup train talk. We are like a bunch of MRR friends hanging out in a diner. Lots of train talk and life talk. Just like the real thing. Only difference is....it's free. We laugh at our mistakes, encourage each other and don't really care if our model railroad isn't perfect. ( there is quite a bit of talent that hangs in here ) Enjoying the hobby is ALL that counts here. Hope to get to know you. Steam huh? You'll have plenty of conversation with some here. Jump right in and don't be afraid to wander "off topic" .

Jeff- Yes, glad your problem isn't as bad as it could have been. Angel

Jim- Good luck on the "train time" will keep an eye peeled for the photos. Of course you know your photos are always welcome here anytime.

Barry- have a safe trip. I'll have a pie ready when you get back. Err, I mean, um waiting , uh, for you .Whistling

(yawn) Well best get to bed . Prayers for those in need.

Hi Tom (tcwright)!  Was the loco 1701?  Saw her sitting in the Geneva yard with a few hoppers earlier that day.  Probably changing out full ones for empties at the Salt Mine in Watkins Glen.  Very neat to be enjoying some of that world famous Glenora wine and have the FGLK go by....... The Wellsboro and Corning is a 35 mile short line between Wellsboro, PA and Corning, NY.  Another shortline that has saved some trackage that once was part of the NYC and later Conrail.  The hoppers were undoubtedly carrying salt.  I have no idea what the Wellsboro and Corning car would be doing in Watkins Glen???

I found I was mistaken about the kid from across the street earlier tonight.........  It was his brother who received the MLK Scholarship and was at UB.  His brother did graduate from college and is working to save money for his Masters degree.  The guy who came over to borrow the sander is his younger brother (They look like identical twins...but are 2 years apart in age)  He started college but dropped out.  There are 3 brothers in the family. All of them are great people.  The youngest is still living at home and I see him often.

Still getting some sprinkles here but the steady rain has stopped for the time being.

Hope all of you have a great night!

Last week I sprung for my first Intermountain purchase ever.  A wonderful little corn syrup tank car that I'm absolutely terrified of handling.  As great as it is, I can't help but note a few things that bother me about it.

Firstly, on the top, where it was protected by plastic sheets inside its big plastic cradle, theres odd smudges or something.  It looks a lot like if you had a greasy fingerprint.  But its way too small for that and unlike a fingerprint won't wipe off.  Secondly, the one brace and end walkway are not aligned properly.  The brace is rotated a few degress to the left which in turn makes the walkway noticeably lower on one side of the car.  Its the brace on the left

The picture itself isn't level so it might be harder to notice.  But its very easy to pick out in person.  I'd love to try and correct whatever is wrong with it, but this thing is so nice and detailed it looks like something wants to break on its own without my interference.

Evening all.  It's late here in SunnyCal, so I'll bet that just about everyone else is fast asleep.  Oh, well--Whistling

Just got back from subbing for the 'Absent Accompanist' at the Jesuit dress rehearsal.  Talk about Old Home Week--the guys were all over me.  Rehearsal went well, they're just as Goofy (and loveable) as ever, I got mobbed with "Doc, are you COMING BACK next year?"   The choir director just grinned, so I think there's SOMETHING in the air.  Don't know what.  But if so, the answer from my point of view is going to be a resounding YES!!!! Smile,Wink, & Grin

Anyway, the concert's this Saturday and I've got the music if the new accompanist doesn't show up.

Lee:  I know what you mean about the cost of those Tortoise slo-mo switch machines.  That's the main reason that my Tomar semaphores are operated by my own swtich machine (it's called my Index Finger Tongue).  Oh, BTW, found a spot for those two extras I have.  Of course crawling up into the 'mountains' to install them is going to be a hoot!

Rob:  Jeff suggested spraying the road with Matte Finish.  I agree with him.  Either that or maybe Dullcote.  It might put the finish on that will hold those paint pens.

Jeff:  Take care of that foot!  Whatever the doctor says, DO IT!   On a better note, I really like your mortar on the building--I don't seem to be able to get the hang of doing that.  I either let it dry too long or wipe it off too soon.  I like your balance.

Ol' Timer:  Welcome to the Diner.  I think you'll find out as I have, that is' a great bunch of guys.  We talk about everything from our layouts to our lives.  I like this group, I think you will, too.

Morgan:  That's a model of the Lincoln Funeral car, right?  I like what you did with it a lot!  Got any 'under construction' photos?  Nice job!  Bow

Well, have a day vacuuming the MR tomorrow (wind today--POLLEN!!) then going to run some trains.  See what my little "Prospector" looks like--photos to follow on WPF if it looks good.  Mass and Jesuit Concert on Saturday, then the Jesuit Grandparent's Mass on Sunday.   And see if those little 'hints' about returning to Jesuit next year are gonna pan out.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Ray,

It was the ex-Providence & Worcester #2306. That red & black paint scheme still looks good. The hoppers were a very clean BNSF, two Genesee & Wyoming, and a CLSX (Cargill Salt Division).

By the way, I was going to call you this past weekend and see about getting together for a cup of coffee or something, but last Friday I started to have back spasms which lasted through Monday afternoon. So even though reservations had been made for some time, the trip was very doubtful. The decision to go was made Wednesday morning with the understanding that if driving up there became too uncomfortable we were going to turn around and come home. Although we made it, I've been on the heating pad since we got back. Youv'e invited me to contact you twice, and I didn't want you to think I was ignoring your invitations.

Good morning all,

Jim,
the MRESC (Model Railroad Enthusiasts Stimulus Check) is inserted in your pay check every month unless your on SSI or Retired then you get a lump sum.

Yes those Mikado’s are tempting and if they run like the T-1 I bought last month they would be well worth the $250.  Plus throw on the lifetime warranty on the motor and a 2 year warranty on the locomotive you can’t go wrong.  That Broadway Limited T-1 just works, where other locomotives stall or can’t pull the BLI do what it’s told.  I would bet those Mikado’s could pull 30 cars.  I had the T-1 running with 40 cars and I still haven’t found its limit.
Oh good news, I got all the bugs worked out of mainline #1.  I ran those 40 cars in forward and reverse around the layout with zero derailments and no loss of power stalls. A 26 car train takes up 1/4 of the mainline.

Tom, I just bought 12 cast metal semaphores from the bay I had hoped to use on the layout.  I’m thinking about using LEDs on the layout for signals.  I can get one 12v PS for $35 that will power the block detectors and the lights without using track power.  Right now I’m looking at 3 blocks on 2 mainlines.

My shopping list for each block is: Circuitron BD-3 and SD-3 for $38.90 together if I go with a single target 3 color LED signal.  If I use cantilever or a bridge I can build my own signals for less than $1 each.  If I go semaphore I’ll have to buy the control cable and the switch machines then each block would cost about $60. Still thinking about what I want to do.

Mold making: The molds came out great for the pallet sacks.  Tonight I’ll make the first pour and let you guys know how it worked.  I applied the final coat of latex to the junk piles and the lumber loads last night.  It takes about 2 weeks to build the molds hopefully it’s worth it.

Good morning folks.

Happy Birthday to Me!Blush

We have part two of a busy weekend at work. I can't wait to get out of there tonight.

I put a paint wash over my bridge piers last night. I mixed up too much, so I washed the whole river valley. It looks like a bad lands scene right now! That's okay, I just wanted to start changing the colors. I need to stop and buy a whole bunch of craft paints this weekend. It looks like all of mine have darn near dried up. I have to go back with a white wash to lighten up parts of the limestone piers later tonight. The river bottom is going to be mostly brown I've decided. That will be the most authentic looking. I'm having a hard time keeping myself from throwing ground foam all over everything. Soon enough, soon enough!

My wife is taking me out for prime rib later!

Have a great day!

Mornin' Rain today? Who knows. Like the weatherman said once, as his forecast for the day mind you, "so it might rain and it might not. It just depends on what it does." ......I need that job. Busy day today gotta round up a box. Get junk, err, I mean stuff, ready for the garage sale and, of course mow, then bale, the yard. Depending on the weather

Morgan- Unusual project, I've not seen or heard of one before. Very nice.

Tom- Sounds like you're pretty excited. I kinda hope the accompanist doesn't show! (sounds like you sorta do too). Good luck with the "hints"!

Garry- Hey, hey, HEY, Mister!!! You can't be spreading facts and jumbling up all that Illinois has accomplished over the years. You know good and well this state stole Lincoln YEEEEARS ago. Finders keepers, losers weepers. Laugh

Corey- Happy Birthday Prime Rib? Where and when. We'll be there,... uh, you buyin'?

Jerry- Caboose looks good. 5months is a long time, I hope you get out and Have Fun!

My BIL law stopped by last night. First time he's been in the basement since the layout was up I guess. He said a friend of his has an around the room shelf layout. Don't know who that is, they live in another town. Anyway he and his wife were impressed and she thought it was "really neat". Said they would have to come by more often and check out the progress. I told her don't expect a lot of progress too quick from here on out. Buildings and scenery can get expensive and the budget doesn't allow for "instant railroad". Not to mention the time it takes. (Especially since I'm trying this take your time thing) Made me feel good, even if they were only being polite, though I don't think they were.

I did a bit more checking on the 4-4-0 and discovered the model number stated was not the model number pictured. The model number stated (51101) is the UP # 119, I believe, and the model shown (51124) is the CP JUPITER. I like the balloon stack look even though the engine will burn coal. It's a nostalgia cruise, and it looks right for the era that the tourists will be visiting. No specific year, just say around the 1870's 1880's. And I'm sure they didn't run right out and pull the spark arresters off everything just because they switched to coal, so I could I guess make it say just pre-1900. Wait, what do I care, it's a tourist thing. They run what they buy that looks neat. As long as it looks reasonably close by my standards. I don't think I want the colors the Jupiter has. Kind of bright. I was hoping to just remove the Railway name and add my own. Hmmph. Back to looking.Grumpy

Have a Great Day.

The list is too long so " THANKS guys and gals for all the welcomes ! I like an area where you won't get called on running a  non prototypical railroad . Hey conversion and experimentation is alot of the fun .... and that's what I love to do and see what you all are doing . Seems other areas nail you right away with that ... " that building never existed " or the really good one .... you're running cars from different lines on that engine .... think some of them never saw a real freight train . I'm into O scale right now .... but the general idea is the same .... only larger . I think by reading the posts this is where I've found a home . So I'll take a cup of Jo with cream and no sugar .... need 3 of them to wake up .... LOL .

The bank card's on the table guys have the first round of food and drinks on me ... I'll get the tip too .... waitresses need them .... my wife was one when we first got married .... I never stiff them .

Mornin' everyone!

A dark, cloudy, gray day outside here in the Finger Lakes this morning but pleasant none the less at 68°F predicted for the afternoon.  I will have to mow my lawn again today or tomorrow.  I also have some errands to run today and then have to drive to Canandaigua to feed Monet my sister's old cat.  So I won't be able to spend a lot of time on the layout.  Don't really have much I can do until some stuff comes in at the LHS for me anyway.......

Tom, sounds like "old home week" at school.  I do hope you are asked back next year.  Being around young people is key to staying young at heart, I think.  Not to mention you will be back doing something you love and I think miss!  Hope the concert goes well and that it will be you at the piano!

tcwright, hope your back gets to feeling better.  Not fun to travel and have a back ache!  There is always next year when you come this way to have that cup of coffee.........

Happy Birthday Corey

Sheesh, I started this well over an hour ago!  Got interrupted  by a phone call that had me doing 3 other things first.  So I guess I'll just take my coffee and run so I can do the other 3 things that must be done first and then get to the stuff I mentioned that has to be done today!

Catch you all later!

Ole Timer- Glad to hear your sticking around. You pretty much nailed us. Without enjoyment or fun this might as well be work. Whoops, sorry Jim.( He doesn't like that word) Some are more prototypical than others but never a scornful word has been uttered. O Scale huh? You just might qualify for the diners minority discount.Laugh

I like your comment on the cars and never seing a real freight. I've seen cars from roads that don't exist anymore being drug down the tracks. I know that they may just be moving to a new local from some back lot somewhere to be repainted maybe, but they are still on the tracks and, like me, if I got it....I'm gonna use it.Big Smile

Don't forget to try the pie, It's on PC. I mean literally. It's on PC.  LOL.

Where did the sparrow find the coconut, this is a temperate climate and coconuts are tropical, are you suggesting it migrated? Lee

Sparrows are not migratory! It doesn't matter anyway. The fact is a Sparrow could not possibly carry a coconut.
