Good Morning All,

Lots of snow and wind here but the sun is out this morning and it looks great covering everything. The wind really sculpted the snow.Got most of a day in at the new shop directing yesterday. Couldn't do much more than that as my son would have tied me to the scooter if I did.

Jerry, make the car as heavy as is legal, if you sculpt it, try to keep most of the mass to the rear of the car and add weights there also. Don't unbalance it so much the front wheels want to jump the barrier. The biggest secret is to make sure the axels are straight and clean (we polished ours with metal polish then very carefully removed all the polish residue). The wheels need to be clean and smooth inside and out. Narrow is better, pay attention to the area on the sides where the axels go through. Dry graphite powder seems to work best as a lubricant as it isn't sticky and won't attract dust or dirt. Rub some onto the axels and drop some into the wheel bores then work it in. A little goes a long way. Make sure the rules allow what I've just mentioned as they tend to vary from group to group. The TV ad with the built by participant car beating the probuilt one can be very true. I let my son do all the work on his except the bandsaw work for the basic shape - he finished second and I was much more proud than I would have been had I just handed him a car to use.

I use MRC Prodigy Advanced with good results for a DCC system. The entry level Express works well also though the stationary and mobile decoders have been a pain and I've switched to NCE and Digitrax for the decoders with happy results. Making the change from a DC block setup to DCC was reletively easy though I did end up adding feeders every 3 feet and a 12 gage bus wire once I started using sound.

Jeff - we have a lot of trouble with older factory aluminum wheels leaking from corossion to the heavy plastic sealing coatings up here and I now make sure I inspect the bead area when I fit new tires and scrub it down with a scotchbrite disc if needed. A respray with clear wheel paint keeps the wheel from getting to grotty or the corrosion from easily spreading.

Inch - nice work. Did you negotiate a bigger area for the layout? Looks bigger than last time.

Lee - Good luck with the thyroid tests. I am still struggling from the iodine they gave me which killed off more than it should have and now need meds to make the thyroid more active. Hope you miss all that fun.

Well - I have another appt with the doc today to see how the foot is progressing. Wish me luck.  J.R.

I see I won the page - the foods on me lads and extra pie please to celebrate PC's recovery from the cold.

I know what you mean. Mine are 15 years old and this is the first problem I've had with any of them.

Good morning.

It's 33° outside and 73° inside. It's partly cloudy and may get up to around 60° later today. Conditions will remain at partly cloudy.

Didn't get a chance to work on the observation car yesterday or any other layout project for that matter. I had to go to the tire shop in town to get a flat dealt with. There was a good reason I couldn't find a hole in the tire as there wasn't one to be found. I had neglected however to check around the bead. A little oxidized aluminum can really cause problems, but it has been corrected and everything is good now. I then most of the rest of the day helping my father clean his yard. Big job there. He loaded while I drove and unloaded. By the time I got home I was to pooped to pop, and for good reason. My blood sugar level was 44. Not good. That was way too low. I finish off some fried fish and fried okra and went to bed for a bit. When I got up later I felt more human. This afternoon I have to go to DeRidder to get one of my shoes repaired. While I'm there I'll get some grocery shopping done and have a look at the 1/87 cars to see if they have anything I don't already have.

Mornin' everyone!

I'm up and shivering......  Currently 12°F here in the Finger Lakes with a high of, hang on to your hats, 18°F this afternoon.  I'm ready for spring.  If I can get the wood splitter started today, I may get the woodstove cranking for a few more days. I have to get an oil change in the car so my daily trip to feed my sister's cat will take a bit longer today.  I have a coupon for the oil change from the dealer that includes a complete check over for her so I'll get it done at the dealership.

Zoe bring on the coffee.  Yup!  In a FGLK Mug.  I will also have a nice big hot bowl of oatmeal with brown sugar if you please.

LSWrr
Congratulations on your nomination.  It might be nice to ask her to be a “trustee to the board of officers”, you know someone you can provide guidance and instruction from time to time, I think she would be flattered at the opportunity.

Thank you Lee!  I plan to enter a motion at the end of the formal election to bestow the title of President Emeritus on Rosa (The lady who has been the president for the past 12+ years).  Rosa worked for the city of Geneva for many years as the head of the Human Rights Commission and has been very active in the community in so many ways.  Whenever there was a problem in the schools involving "race" she was the first person called.  One of my favorite Rosa stories was the time when a young man (8th grader) was being, well, shall we say a PITA and was blaming the color of his skin as the reason why he was being "picked on".  I was one of the "accused" teachers in the incident.  I walked in the office to see the young man and his mother sitting outside the Vice-Principals office.  He had a look like like "we gonna kick ......" on his face.  I was getting some paperwork at the counter when I heard Rosa say, "Well Mr. Howard how are you?"  Then her arms went around my neck and she gave me a big hug!  I looked over her shoulder at the kid sitting there.  His expression had turned to one of "Crap!"  Came back a few minutes later to hear through the walls of the Vice-Principals office Rosa giving him a major tongue lashing.  "When those teachers ask you to do something you WILL do it! Do I make myself clear!?" His attitude did a major turn around after that.  Rosa has always been a proponent for getting a good education.  Three of her 4 children have advanced college degrees.  Two are teachers, and one is the Executive Director of a non-profit organization here in Geneva.  The 4th. is Developmentally Disabled and still has to cared for at home. She has been a wonderful friend of mine for the last 25 years.   It is very sad to see her start to fail.

Sorry for the rant.  Just a difficult time to see the end of an era for the organization..................

Lee hope your tests go well and the problem can be solved easily!

Jeffrey!  Blood sugar of 44!  Not good my friend, not good.  That's pass out time.  I hope you carry those sugar thingies around with you for those times.  You are lucky you got home.

Have a great day all, I see my coffee is here and the oatmeal as well.  I'll be sitting by the window watching the switching going on in the yard.

You got that right. It gives a whole new meaning to almost working yourself to death. Luckily I live just an eighth of a mile away so it's an easy walk. I try to keep some chocolate candy where I can get at it quickly. The lowest I've been is 32 and I was still able to walk but I had a lot of trouble concentrating.

Good late morning' all. To all our friends and families in the Lone Star State:

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!!! ( I know yesterday ) Hope you had a good day.Big Smile Believe it or not I didn't even pay attention to the date until this morning. I missed the celebratory toastSigh

Well, it's tuff to remember what happened. I'll give it a shot as I rememberWhistling

Inch- great work. That water scene looks very good. I remember the photos not long ago about you taking the world apart. You've really made progress.Bow

Lee- good luck with the thyroid issue. Given anymore thought to retiring? (not because of this)

Philip- Glad to here your feeling better. Coughing fits, not to mention the general feeling of pooeyness, can just about drive you crazy. So we understand.Laugh Have some pie, better make it a cream.

Barry-is it Friday yet? Looking forward to see your building. I couldn't help but notice you bought a RTR "motorized boxcar". Causing the demise of steam kits hmmmm?(Not serious. Just a light hearted chuckle about the other thread on Bowser)Smile,Wink, & Grin.

Ray- Congrats on the new position. Sounds like your past Pres was a wonderful woman and you admired her. I think she will be very pleased with your plans for her.

Oh my, the forum is slowing down. I'd better end this before it's too late.

Ryan- Glad you made it back. We've been starving in here for about 13 pages! DinnerThank goodness for the pies!

Afternoon all!

Chloe I'll have a bowl of the Oyster Stew that Ryan Made.  Man does that look good.

Ryan I printed out the page with the recipes you linked to this morning.  I be using it for company fare before long.  Oh yeh, I am the cook of my family.  I end up doing many of the Big Meals like Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings.  Cooking is one of my other hobbies so I read your posts with interest every day.

Todd, actually I am staying in the position of Vice-President which I have held for at least a decade now.  Funny thing I just thought about is that the president of the committee before Rosa was an associate pastor of a church here in town.  He was tragically killed when a 10 wheeler dump truck was in an accident and ended up rolled over onto the man's pick-up truck.  They didn't even know he was in it until they rolled the 10 wheeler back upright.  He was crushed to death instantly. The man who will become the new President is the associate pastor of the same church now..............

Did a bit more scenery this morning on the layout, but now have to scoot to Canandaigua for the oil change in the car.

Catch you all later!

Well it seems like to I need to do some catching up.

I haven't done much layout wise.  I finished up a CSX boxcar, well weathered it.

Today, well this morning I helped Jessica (the wife) out at her preschool job.  OH BOY,  that was fun.  The kid that likes train, he and I set up a small track.  Then another kid added a baby doll to it, and then a green puppet frog.  Of course I started to add in silly stuff.  I will say that was pretty fun.

Well everybody have a good afternoon, and evening.

I’m still looking for a new job; I can’t retire without starting a new career in something.  There is a job posting for Cleveland, salary range is: $67,583.00 to $87,862.00 per year.  I’ll be fine tuning my resume to fit the job description and they require me to write two 750 words (or less) essays describing my abilities for the position.  Not to mention a 20 question “test” I have to take online.  I think I can still find money in the salary range for model trains, LOL.

My real “drop dead date” is 2012, if I can’t find something by then I’ll just stick out the last 4 years to get my 30 year retirement check.
Then again, I just bought a lottery ticket for the $212,000,000.00 jackpot.  They say your odds are better to be hit by lightning; well I’ve been hit 4.5 times in the last 22 years so I think it’s my turn to win! I got hit while operating a boat; lightning hit the mast fried all the electronics, melted the aluminum 9’ mast, set the flags on fire, and peeled a bunch of paint. The .5 was from a near strike, tossed me about 5 feet away from where I was standing.  Nevertheless I don’t stray outside much anymore during storms.

Thanks, I think tomorrow’s tests will be easy.  The only cure for the parathyroid is to have the affected one(s) removed.  Everyone has 4 of them located behind the thyroid gland. They manage calcium levels.  Calcium is used to build/repair bones and control central nervous system functions.  Due to the parathyroid issue the calcium is suspended in my blood and not going where it’s needed.

AHHH! I've been gone for a couple days, and I don't even know how many new pages there are!

Chloe, I'll take a hot chocolate, thanks.

We lost in the Finals on Sunday, 2-0. Not bad for a second year team. Good job guys!!!!!

I put down the tape for some more roads yesterday (I need to get more plaster to pave them). I also painted some N scale cork to use as sidewalks. I couldn't use it for anything else, so why not.

I think I'm going to dump the idea of using the passenger car as a station. I found a piece of balsa wood that I can use for the platform. It will be about three feet long (enough for three 85 foot cars) and they will be high level platforms, since that's all NJT's building these days. Just need to figure out how tall they will need to be.

I'll try to get some pictures later. Prayers for all in need.

I'm Bbbbbbaaaaaaaacccccccckkkkkkkk!

Got my sister's cat fed and pet the sweet kitty cat from next door to her house (until he decided to whack me!).  Had the oil changed in the Yaris.  I went up to the counter, got waited on by a cute little thing who talked me into having the tires rotated as well.  She evidently likes her job judging by the grin she wears. Went into the waiting room to... ah....wait.  An older couple came in a few minutes later and sat down.  I was sitting there thinking that the Yaris is now 1 year old, more than half paid for, and has been a fantastic little car to drive.  One of the service managers came in and told the older couple that their car was ready.  I was thinking, man, that was quick.  Probably just had to get to inspected or something..............  Inspection........  My car is now 1 year old............  Oops!  I need to get the car inspected, it was due last month.  I grab my coat and head back out to the service desk.  I am met half way by the girl who was my service adviser.  "Mr. Howard?  Your car needs to have its NYS inspection."  I say, "yes it does", I was just coming out to tell you that!  So car is inspected, oil changed, tires rotated, all the fluids checked and topped of, antifreeze level checked, air pressure checked in the tires, add NYS Tax and it came to $67.  Not too bad.  So far the car has cost me less than $100 for service.

Lee good luck on the job/career.  Hope you ace the "test"!

By golly and I knew that too. Even though I'm typing in Word, I still rely on my memory toooooo much. Aaaah retirement. Stop excercising the brain and you loose it. Just a few years ago I could remember things an elephant forgot. OP orders, route plans, trucks, numbers, times, dates, NAMES! Now I can't even remember what I was talking about. No, I mean I can't remember what I was talking about.Laugh Oh yeah. You're right. Hoo boy, buy them lottery tickets! Wink

Ray, a dump truck rollover?  Nasty way to go, but I guess it was quick at least.  wow!

A very freaky accident.  The dump truck (loaded with gravel) was turning onto a side road going to a construction site (Guardian Glass), thought he had the right of way at the light, and hit a car coming the other direction.  Front wheel of the truck went up over the front of the car  tipping the truck up and over.  Rev, Ed was in his pickup on the other side of the intersection and the truck rolled and landed right on top of the pickup.  Pretty messy and a terrible way to die for one of the kindest, gentle souls, that I have ever known. Ed was 6' 4" and strong as an ox. A very soft spoken man of the cloth who was highly thought of by all people in Geneva.  His funeral service was held in my church as the little church he was from couldn't have begun to hold the crowd.  Several hundred people attended the service and a couple thousand had come to the funeral home to say goodbye.  That was about 15 years ago and it still bothers me to think about it.

What you need sir is a good massage therapist floowoed by a chiropractor. Possibly anyone on the footballl team bigger than you across with a sledge. You need to loosen up the back and neck muscles that tensed up to keep you from flailing around in the accident. Natural human reaction. . That's what's pulling your spine out. Once they can move, the bone guy should be able to thwak the spine back in place. Also try a warm shower.
