I have 78, ranging from a Tyco model of an Alco C420 to a brass SDL39.  Only one kettle in the lot, a Genesis Light Mike.

That's far more than I can use on the layout at any given time, but I have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation diesels (and that Mike), so I can swap out power and rolling stock to more or less change the era.

The collection gets thinned a little from time to time, as I get rid of locos that I deem "less relevant".  However, the manufacturers keep coming out with locos that are "more relevant", so the overall size of the collection tends to increase over time.

Oh, yeah, that Tyco:  It's a shelf queen that has some sentimental value, otherwise it would have been long gone...

I have 16:

2 P2K SD45s

2 P2K GP30s (looking to make it 3 or 4)

2 P2K GP9s

2 P2K SD9s

2 P2K U28Bs

2 Athearn BB SW1500s (only one is powered but weighs more that an P2K GP, the other has the sound stuff in it)

3 Atlas/Kato C424s (undergoing repaint)

1 Athearn RTR GP35 (under going a rebuild)

I have sound for each grouping for everything except for the C424s, GP30s, and SD45s. I'm getting an F45 with sound to run with the SD45s, and am looking at getting a GP30 with sound/DCC to put a BN shell on. The C424s will get a sound decoder whenever I get them painted.

I don't count the ones I'm selling (5 FTs, 3 SW9s, 1 GP9, 1 GP38-2)

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

TO CUDA KEN: Hello, I see you have an BLI AC6000 Blueline. I have one purchased more than a year ago. I canĀ“t get to have the ditch lights always steady ON, but flashing when I press the horn button. What about your loco? Thanks you.

I have 7 engines all made by Marklin

1 DB class 151 heavy frieght motor

1 DB class 111 passenger motor

2 DB class 212 diesels

1 DB class 363 switcher

1 DB class 52   2-10-0

1 DB class 86   2-8-2 Tank engine

Seven may not be many but is suits my railroad, the only other engines I am planning to aquire in the future are: 1 DB class 294 diesel and a DB class 101 or 120 passenger motor

The old American Flyer steamer is now with my brother; the HO stuff went to my sons for the most part (at least what still ran) though I may find 1 or 2 around if I look hard enough.  Since I started in n-scale a few years ago, my roster is limited to a couple of steam engines,  a couple of diesels, and a diesel switcher. The roster may grow some with the expansion of the layout, but since I keep most of the stuff on the layout, I'll be restrained by the space.

Hopefully this hobby has not turned into a contest to see who can hoard the most locomotives, by the amount of some posts(if they are to be believed),   this is a distasteful forum.

I don't think that's anyone's intention in posting here.  Its ok to have as many or few -- but its interesting to see the different numbers and kinds.

There's nothing distastefull about collecting Engines or anything else. That's why it's called a Hobby.

I personally know someone with abut 140, and he's in the process of speed matching every one of them.

I started the thread to get a feel of the average that serious modelers have.  I find it interesting in the mix that many have, especially the old timere. Whistling There are a few here I can still call that.

I've done some thinning down of my loco fleet--cut out all the DC/DCC steam with the bells and the whistles, and am just concentrating on my brass DC steamer fleet right now.  Which means I've reitred all of my BLI's, Spectrums and P2K's to their boxes.

What I have left:  All brass, all steam and they all run quite well.

These locomotives are decorated for the Seaboard Air Line, they are:

ALCO RS-2

USRA Light 2-10-2

USRA 0-6-0

USRA 2-10-0

USRA 4-6-2

USRA 2-8-2

Baldwin VO1000

Baldwin DR12-8-3000 "Centipede"

SW1200

NW-2

GP9

EMD E4

EMD E8

FA1

F-3A

Undecorated static model:

2 truck Shay

Plus there are three Brass Locomotives all undecorated.

Heisler

2 old tea kettle models

So that gives a me total of 18 locomotive models. Not a large roster, but suits my needs and those of my model RR. It's not likely to increase by much and only one at a time if there are any new releases of SAL locomotives that are not represented already in my roster.

Cheers

I thought I had about 60 locomotives, but after counting it turns out I have over 100, and I haven't stopped yet. Just doing my part to stimulate the economy.

I have a nice number. For Wisconsin and Southern, I have:
1 GP7U
3 GP38/40s
1 SD40-2

I have two more SD40-2s that need major work and modification before they also join the fleet. Outside of that, I have:
1 dummy Union Pacific engine
1 C&NW F7
1 really old American Flyer engine that I might touch up to do steam photo-ops.

If people want to collect locos, more power to them. Who are you to judge them.

This isn't the first post I've seen you belittle members for collecting locos, or displaying brass. Perhaps this is your hobby?

After looking at the rosters on some of the posts I now know why some call this lot motley...

2 Mehano GP40's, 3 'so-old-can't-make-out-label'E7's, 5 'Atlas' RS3's, a lonely petunia scratchbuilt VO1000 my dad made, a couple of other scratchbuilt RS11's found at a flea market and a couple H-14-44's from somewhere or other...Whistling

The only one mentioning the word "contest" is you. This thread is no more of a contest than the weekly photo fun threads or layout progress threads. I like to look into what other modelers are doing and seeing who has what, and it seems everyone likes this info as well....well, almost everyone Smile Jamie

A tendency to go from comparing notes amongst hobbiests with some gets interpreted into contests... much like difference into hierarchies... some need to be reminded about thinking differently... I need to turn off mySoapBox...

I forgot 2 Bachmann 44 Ton's and a couple of brass doodlebugs...

Didn't read all the replies to this thread but here is my 2 cents:

ninety-one

Love 'em all

Switch 'em around

Premise:  Small (generic SW USA local) layout (15' X 5')  plus 91 locos and 200+ cars = variety and illusion grand layout, no two days are the same.  The rest, while awaiting their turn on the layout, are on display in lighted cases.

Besides, the most fun I have had in years is to take a preowned loco and improve it with r&r and a good decoder.

Way to many locomotives not enough rolling stock...but this is my modern roster minus 10 that are not on the list and 6 that are not completed. Shifting my focus to BN 1970 merger power, I really do enjoy painting and detailing locomotives 1970 BN should provide some tough and interesting paint schemes to match

Don Z. Could you explain what a GP9i loke is? I'm wondering what the ' i ' was about...

I guess the "i" stands for imaginary....it also means my formatting in Word was messed up. It is supposed to be a GP9 Phase 1 in the list, but Word changed the capital I to a small i. I guess the Roman Numeral messed things up. Sorry for the confusion.

I have only three: an SW1200 switcher, a GP9, and a GP38, and all are DC...still. I have a few dummy GP38s that are used for part-swapping, and all have the CN noodle indicating the early 70's, I'm told.

I have 54, all modern era diesels, mostly Norfolk Southern roadname.  24 of the 54 have sound and just about anything purchased in the past 2 1/2 years is sound equipped.  I just finished putting a motor controller in a Blueline UP SD40-2 this morning.  I am also going back and adding sound to some of the older units.  The majority are Atlas units followed by P2Ks and then BLIs (both QSI and Blueline).  My favorits are the Atlas Gold 8-40Cs, P2K SD60s and my Blueline AC6000W.  I am eyeing a Kato BNSF SD40-2 Swoosh unit or an Atlas 8-40C Gold BNSF (if I can find one) as number 55.

Here's a link to my roster with pictures.

Wow, I have four locomotives.  Two Athearn, BB diesels, one Mantua Pacific, and a Bachmann Spectrum Consolidation.  I may have more some day, but it's not important right now.

Well, let's see..

2-8-0 times 2, 2-8-2, 2-10-0, 4-6-2 times 2, 4-4-2, SD9, F3A times 2, F3B, RS11 times 2, GP50 (hey, what's THAT doing there?), FA2, U23B, C420. That makes 17 loco's by my count, which technically is roughly 16 more than I really need to run the layout, but what the heck.

I only need just one or two more locomotives, and then I'll have exactly as many as I need and no more. I say that every time I buy a new locomotive.
