Where is that taken from anyway?
Just off of 2nd street in Leesville. I was at the Museum of West Louisiana on 3rd street with the zoom set to maximum. It was taken with a Vivitar 3935 and the shot distance was about 900 yards.

Jeff; tnx alot! now I get another idea scooting through the ol' brain. That building reminds me of a barn/schoolroom used near Woodstock at a conservation area. All corrugated steel sheetwork. What with all the aluminum cookie sheets I picked up lately---Whistling

Where is that taken from anyway?

Lee: Have you received the package yet? If you need the postal information I can send it to you in a PM.

Good morning.

It's 43 and partly cloudy here. The high should be around 60 and it will be cloudy.

My new glasses came in yesterday morning. Yay, I can see again! Yesterday afternoon I went over to my niece's home to help her on the remodeling she's doing. I spent most of my time measuring, cutting and helping her and my sister to install crown molding in the master bedroom and hallway. There's still the second bedroom, bathroom and part of the hallway still to go. At about 8:45 we called it quits and went to my sisters place to dine on Christmas dinner leftovers. I had one of her enchiritos (the size of a paving brick), 4 beef tamales, some beans and a salad with a glass of lemon tea. I finally got back home around 11:30 last night and went right to bed.

Mornin' everyone!

Just another beautiful day here in the Finger Lakes.  The Weatherman is calling for:
Windy. Showers early becoming widely scattered by the afternoon. High around 50F. Winds SW at 25 to 35 mph. Chance of rain 60%. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.

We got 1.2 inches of rain over the last 2 days as 6+ inches of snow melted.  Bet the Fire Companies have been busy pumping out basements.  I haven't been down there yet this morning but did open the door and take a look.  Couldn't see any standing water.... That's a good sign.

Flo, some Dark Roast coffee in a R&GV Museum mug please.  Also some bacon and a short stack of French Toast with NYS Maple Syrup.  Thanks!

Gotta take my shower and head to church, last Sunday as Head Usher, thank goodness.  I like doing the job but December is difficult to get people to volunteer.  Have a great day!

Good Morning---We are under a wind warning this morning as winds are expected to go from the SW at 40-60kmh backing to the W at 60-100kmh(I also got one station pushing110kmh). The temperature right now is 12C and that will go down to -3C in the afternoon. Low will be at ---   -7C and tomorrow will be a mix of sun/cloud with a high of -3C

I did wake up to roaring winds and a branch clacking against the side of the house---so far still attached to the tree...Whistling

Hello and a late Merry Christmas to all!

Sorry I couldn't get in, for one, there is two feet of snow on the ground, and next, my little brother has taken control over the computer, playing some sort of game.

Christmas here was a bit interesting with the divorce. Mom's side we had Christmas on Christmas Eve, at her mom's house. Then we had Christmas on Christmas day until 10:30, when I went to my dad's and then to his mom's.

I got some MRR stuff for once. $50 gift certificate to the shop, 2 PFE reefers, a meat reefer, a stock car, a boxcar, and a pullman standard SP red stripe (TOMATO!) 10-5 sleeper. I also I got some figures, including dogs&cats and such.

I also got some movies, a couple Xbox games, some money, a cell phone, a snare drum head, some drumsticks (Not chicken), and a big floor tom (18x16... it's awesome.)

Well, time to hit the sack.

Good to hear from you Johnboy. The Upper Thames Conservation Authority has just passed on a flood warning for the region involving the upper and middle Thames, Pottersburg and Cedar Creeks and the Avon river. It is expected that low lying parkland as well as other lands will be flooded--Sunningdale Rd is already flooded with some other rds in the vicinity being flooded and/or washed out in one way or the other.Whistling

Rain--heavy at times--is expected as well as a lot of melt-off from snowcover so there we have it---Grumpy

Well with this fine news I'm heading off to ZzzSigh

Whistling

Good Evening Guys and Gals.

Our heartfelt wishes go out to all of you who are battling the elements in one way or another. Our weather here has moderated, the -30C has warmed to about -11C today, so that was quite pleasant really. The forcast for the next week is about the same as well.

I wanted to let you know about a DVD I watched the other night.  More than likely a number of you already know about it. It has a 2007 date on it. It is called "Rails & Ties" starring  Kevin Bacon.  He is an Engineer who's train hits a car where the lady wanted to commit suicide. Lots of good shots of the F units and the surprise was that he has a model railroad in his garage that you get to see quite a bit of.  It is  a good story that for the most part is believable. There are a few things that are more than questionable, but all in all not a bad watch.  Do not expect an action film here, but a good story never the less.

Worked late tonight as there was a youth banquet for the members of the youth Parliment that is staged every year between Christmas and New Years. Very nice to see the youth dressed up so nice and behaving like true ladies and Gentlemen. I think maybe there is hope for our countries.

Glad to hear you all did so well from Santa. There should be a great buzz coming from all the train rooms for the rest of the winter..     And we really have been spoiled lately with all the good grub in the diner.  Thanks to all the sweet Ladies for their baking goodies,  I could almost taste them.

Not much has happened on the Last Mountain & Eastern for the last month but have high hopes that will change here in the near future.  My dear Wife got me an Atlas GP-40 in the WP. bi-centenial colors #1976 for Christmas.  Fits right in with my time frame.   Don't  think I will weather it, just leave it bright, like right out of the paint shop.

Well I'm off to bed, this has been a long day.  So blessings to all in need and sleep well.............

Johnboy out...........

The "Wobbly" will wobble soon.

Evening all.

Spent a very quiet Christmas with Remington and Spooky, since the weather precluded any family being able to make it down from either the Sierra or Washington state.  Actually, since the weather's improved around here, we're planning on having a New Year's Day gathering instead.

I did my annual Post-Christmas raid on my LHS, and the place was PACKED!  And not with people exchanging things, but actually BUYING stuff.  Bruce had his full crew on, and I kept running into crowded aisles full of fellow hobbyists.  One little boy was jumping up and down as his father was buying Lionel track, saying "More, Daddy--MORE!"  Kind of warmed me up a lot, evidently daddy came throuigh with a Lionel for him this Christmas, and it was time to expand the empire.  And Daddy had an armfull of HO stuff, so I think I see another father/son thing growing.  Hey, whatever works!  Tongue

For myself, I raided the new Roundhouse ART reefers and cleaned them out (buy it when you can GET it, I always say! ) and found a really neat ATSF cement hopper from Atlas, which when I took it to the counter, Bruce mentioned that the 'build' date was 1957, which was 3 years past my modeling era.  They take good care of me over there Wink.  I shrugged and said, "The heck with it, I'll use a spare tiny decal or rub it out with some Bragdon weathering chalk."  We got a good laugh out of that.  He also told me that he was going to call Sunset after the 1st and confirm the mid-January delivery date on my new Z-6.  Yummy! Tongue  When that monster lady arrives--PHOTOS!!!!!   Eat your hearts out, UP Challenger fans, because one of the Ultimate Monster Mothers of all Alco 4-6-6-4's will be MINE!  YEAH! Cool

Left the music room open this evening while I went out to play Holy Family Vesper Mass, and when I got back, Remington had dragged the Bachmann On30 loco from the Christmas tree layout into the living room and was sitting there with a "Look What I Did, Daddy" smile on his handsome feline face.  Spooky just shrugged:  "Don't blame me, Daddy, the little Fart did it on his own!"  Thank God that stuff is STURDY!  Not even a bite-mark on the smokestack.   I still think that he and "Spring" are e-mailing each other after I'm in bed.

Well, Remington just hopped up on the computer to start to let me know he's hungry, and Spooky just hopped up and whacked the Big Fellah as if to say, "I'm older, I'LL tell him!"

Zoo time.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Evenin' everyone!

Rain has stopped (early afternoon) but the temperature is currently 48°F and will only go down to 47°F overnight.  Yesterday we had 6 to 8" of snow on the ground.  Right now the lawn is quite green........  We got close to 1/2" rain this morning also so there are puddles everywhere.  The incoming water has slowed down in the basement but the sump is still running every 4 or 5 minutes.

blownout cylinder
Ray; Do you have a dehumidifier down there?

Running!  I am also going to leave some heat on overnight to help dry it out faster.  Hopefully should be dried out by tomorrow night.  BTW we are going to get some strong winds tomorrow and tomorrow night (gust over 50) with some showers as well......Grumpy

Its too warm out to fire up the wood stove today so the house feels cold at 68°.

Stay safe and warm!

OK east of Illinois, hang on. Wind and rain coming your way. We are lucky nothing in the way of damage.Power did go out for a second jut long enough to turn things off

Good no damage for you Jim and Ray, our sump pumps running every six seconds but no overflow yet.Thumbs Up

Garry by now you are already in it so be careful. I can’t wait to hear what your present is.

Der- Glad to see you are fine. I hope this storm heading east peters out before it gets to you. You don’t need it. That knife looks great. Probably has a good feel to it when cutting I’ll bet. We do stockings also.

Paul- hope our wind is yours, give you a break.

Thanks BC I’ll wait and do some research before wishing you the same. Don’t want to offend anyone who might be peeking in. WhistlingROFWLOL. Aawww who cares Happy New Years to you too!Big Smile

Went to the city to get the wifes bedspread she didn’t trust me to pick out. (smart woman) and had to turn around a go back home because of the weather. By the time we got back the worst was over. So we went back in a few hours later. Now I’m home and happy. So I guess I’ll have a piece of pecan pie and a glass of milk, sit back and relax for a bit see who blows in..maybe evenZzz Give me a nudge if anything exciting happens. Whoa here comes the wind again. Wow where did that come from. Now it's gone. Weird.

Yes, it's a U-boat. The santa Fe paint stays.

Good evening, cloudy, raw, and some rain today here, but snow cover is still hanging on. I think I will have an eggnog with Captain Morgan please Cloe. Tomorrow it may break the record for high temp if it hits 63F and it will come very close they say.

Started getting the layout tables re-assembled, but one interruption after another prevented me from getting any tables actually assembled...I hate it when that happens! One issue was the dual MRC power pack. This dates back to the '70's and a train set that we bought for the boys one Christmas. I have a dual track running around the Christmas tree, and one locomotive stopped dead. The outer track ran fine. It turned out to be what I think is overheating of the xformer for side 1. After a rest period, it worked Ok again. I suppose a rectifier diode could be beginning to fail also.

ROB: Sorry to hear about Bacon Bits, pets are just like family for sure.

JEFF & PAUL: Thank you for the advice on word wrap here on the forum. I believe the problem is IE ver 8 beta. I have Firefox running now and no issues with words running of the page to the right.

JIM & MIKE: The weather channel was indicating some dangerous weather conditions in your neck of the woods, I hope you missed it all.

SUE: How is "White Cascade"  coming along? Hopefully you more time now to finish the book.

Have any of you guys watched the new series on the History channel called " Extreme Trains" ? What a great show this is, every Tuesday at 10pm here on the east coast.

Zzz Yawwwwnnnnn - huh? Oh, guess I dozed off for a while, Flo. Yep, I'll have a cup of coffee in an AT&SF mug, please and thank you, ma'am.

The front has moved through Southeast Missouri, without much ill effects locally (though I understand some towns south of us are out of power for a while due to the storm). We had a thunderstorm warning here, and a tornado watch for most all of our TV station's coverage area. The line looked nastier on the radar than in person; I didn't hear any 'train' sounds, unless you count that whistle on Thomas the Train... Whistling Rained pretty hard for a while, and my lights flickered a couple of times, but didn't go out. So I have made it through the storm... (with apologies to Barry Manilow).Smile,Wink, & Grin

I hope that our Illinois folks and all points east survive just as well as the storm moves through their area. It looked like this front was a present from our Arkansas neighbors, as it didn't appear to start any further south than mid-Arkansas on the national radars and satellite pics. So I can't blame it on Jeff, which is fine by me. How's everybody else's weather?

Ray - I'm hoping none of our Northeastern Diners get any of this storm, with the rain and slush problems you're already having. It's still 60 F now, but supposed to drop off to almost freezing tonight (33 F), so will need the coat in the morning, I'm sure.

BC and Todd - you guys should get a listen to (or at least find the lyrics for) "Christmas with a Capital C" (by Go Fish, I think). You'll get a chuckle out of it, I expect...Wink

BC, I think you got the fog we had a couple or three days ago. Hope you don't have to drive any long distances in that.

Todd, that one about the aetheists' display - and how they replaced it - is funny (I guess they don't count it 'stealing' to use a faith-based (non-aetheist-derived) phrase, huh? Wink) Oops, guess I'd better not continue with that...

Sue, I should take your lead and do some of that reorganizing. Of course, I'll have to clear the stuff out first to be able to put some kind of shelving under my layout. Sigh

DerJohn, that gizmo looks really handy - she got it at Wally World? I may have to check that section out tomorrow. Looks like #11 blade that fits it - that about right?

Paul, your weather sounds like the fringe of this front we just had, except you didn't get as much rain and didn't cool off as much as they're predicting for us tonight.

PC - Al's back, huh?Blindfold Glad you got some riding in today, because you don't want to be riding when this front gets to your area, trust me!

Flo, could I have a refill on my coffee, please? Thanks, and can you give me a running total so far on these chowhounds? Shock Jeff ordered how big of a steak?! Oh, well, he does have a good appetite for a guy his size... Flo, you might want to set out that apron and dishtowel for me after I finish this cup. I may not have enough money to cover it all after all.

Prayers for safety, no power losses and no flooding for you Diners tonight/tomorrow from this front. We're still getting a little more rain now, but not lots. Prayers for healing and comfort, as well.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

We had great weather today!  I rode my motorcycle almost all day.  This, just a coule of days after Christmas.....in Indiana!

Ahead of the cold front, high temperatures today tied a record for this date.  The record is 67 degrees in 1959 and today’s high hit 67 degrees.  Temperatures will fall into the 30s behind the front overnight.

The rest of the week is a little above normal, so I may get another shot at riding....who knows?

I know I probably won't be riding Tuesday though.  Grandpa's funeral is that day.

Oh, BTW, Al alert in the big room!  Yeah, he's back, and he has spare time on his hands.  Remember, don't feed the trolls!

Good evening people---could I have a carrot soup with a side order of corned beef on rye please--

John der; All that salt encrustation leaves me wondering---how do you get it off the windows? I too suspect salt doing the verdigris on the connex, loads of fun scraping that off.Sigh

Ray; Do you have a dehumidifier down there? if so a few hours of that will help keep any of that mouldy stuff down come spring---Where I worked we had a crawlspace that just loved to collect water(high water table+lots of rain=flooded basement)--so we ended up getting three to keep that thing semi dry in a wet year---Whistling

We are somewhat drier up here but FOG---we got fog boy---right now we are not bad but earlier this afternoon even turning all the lights on in the car only let you see the fog better--I went out to get some groceries to cover for New Years eve and as it is nearing that timeHAPPY NEW YEARS!!!

Hi Gang: I've been busy the last couple of days. I took the daughters in-laws to Clark Gardens yesterday. It turns out that the reseptionest there is from England and very near Leighton Buzzard where the in-laws live. Small world.

The weather here hasn't been real bad just kind of crazy. Yesterday it got up to 80 and this morning it was 72 at 6am. About 8am it dropped to 52 and windy like crazy. It went back up to about 60 but with the wind it feels much colder.

Dick when I have problems with the right margin dissapering I hit "compatibility view" and that takes care of it. Now the compatibility is below the blue WIE line at the top of the screne. It is a small box with a torn piece of paper in it. At least it is on my puter.

Well I'm going to go see what Mary Ann is up to.

See you all later.

Wow John you live very close to the water!  No doubt that's salt on your tracks.

Well a friend of mine was in town visiting her mother and she dropped by with a big wrapped box for me.  I opened it up and there it was the built up Walthers Fire Station.

Hello Diners! I'll have some of the Vindaloo curried turkey please Chloe, with mixed mashed potato and turnip; and African Red Tea while I meet and greet. Thanks, CapeJim.

I hope you have all had a good Christmas. I figure I won't be able to catch up (my last bookmark is in page 129!) so I'll start over on this page.

We lost power due to a tremendous wind and rain storm on Dec.21st, and didn't get it back until Christmas Eve. I didn't bother with getting on-line until after Christmas, with all the extra things that had to be done here, and visiting our daughter and grandsons. Today is the first real mrr time I've been able to carve out.  The storm was a southwest gale, and did more damage to trees (and our roof which has lost many shingle tabs, and is down to the bare wood in one place over my MIL's bedroom)  than hurricane Juan, or "White Juan" a year or so after that. The sea was being blown to a mist, and the resultant salt spray did this to our windows. This is not snow fallng gently outside, but salt crusted on the glass.

Christmas Day I found this little beauty in my stocking....yes, we still do that for each other, with the original stockings Kris made when our daughter was real small, so getting on for 40 years ago...   I think it's going to come in very handy, and it takes X-Acto blades.  Kris found it in the crafts section of WallyMart.

I started on the track cleaning this afternoon, and had the lower yard rough cleaned in just 30 minutes.  That'sthe worst part of the layout.  Here's a progress shot on track right at the front of the layout.

You can see how the crud completely coats the rail. I've noticed that the power feeds, where they are exposed copper wirebeside the track, and escaped painting, are quite green with verdigris - so there is definitely a chemical reaction going on between those wires and whatever is in the air...salt most likely.

Back to the track cleaning.  With any luck I can get the layout done and back in operation before an e-mail mrr aquaintance from New Brunswick who's working weekends in Dartmouth finds his way here some time before the middle of January!

Hello everybody...

Briefly, our trip to Cincinnati on Chrismas day was fine with good weather and little traffic. We're headed to Detroit next.

I received a very nice Chrismas present! Big SmileConfusedWhistling

Until next time, Happy Model Railroading!

Afternoon everyone!

I tried to get in here to post a couple of times earlier but got sidetracked by a couple of cats who thouth since I was sitting at the computer that i was there to hold them on my shoulder and give them love and attention.......  Flo, dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug and a bowl of Ham and cabbage soup for lunch.

Today is going to be primarily clean up the house and put away stuff day.  That and watch the snow melt. Currently 46°F with a high around 50°F and under a flood advisory here in the Finger lakes today.  The Fire Dept. will be out saving cellars all day.  Literally!  They will be pumping quite a few I think.  We will lose about 8 inches of snow and get over a half inch of rain today.  The street out front is flowing pretty good at the moment.  Yard across the street is a swimming pool as it always is under these conditions.

Hope you all have a great day and stay dry!

[edit] Should have checked my own basement this morning.  I have a wet trainroom floor myself.  Until this inundation I have had a dry cellar since I had the pipe fixed that takes the flow from the back roof and my sump out near the road.  This would mean that I have a very wet back yard.  Oh well, the heat is on and towels are sopping up what has come in so far.  I will need to take up the floor pads and let them dry today as well........  No major damage just an annoyance.
