 Good morning.

It's 42 and clear here. The high will be in the low 60's and it will be partly cloudy.

Didn't get any layout work done yesterday. Went to Lowe's and looked at some electric heaters. I may be needing one soon. Mine is starting to make some strange motor related noises. I may get another milkhouse heater like I have or I may get something larger. They have an electric fireplace that looks like it will fit under the front of the layout. I'll have to check the measurements. It has a 1950's look to it that would go well with the age of my trailer (1950) as well as supply all the heat I would need. There's no gas or wood required as it's all electric so there's no need for a vent and I like the way it looks. I'll just have to clear the junk from under that part of the layout and mount a metal plate to the underside of the layout. I'll also have to figure out the finances for it.

Good morning all,

Garry, I bet you’re close to my kids they live in Macomb Township.

Downtown Fox Creek (on my layout) is progressing.  I need to find some pictures to post in the shop windows (if you have any please email them to me) to make the stores look occupied and some minor touch ups to some of the buildings.

I did finish the JL Innovations pedestal crane last night that was a wood, metal, brass, cardboard kit.

Working 3 days this week then another 4 day weekend!  Wahoo!

Hello...

We drove from Cincinnati to Detroit late yesterday. There was heavy rain in Toledo area, and a long detour for I-75 in Michigan. We hit one of the famous Michigan pot holes and it messed up the radio, CD player, and clock. High winds have caused power outages in MI.

Presently, we are north of Detroit visiting family members. We are csoe to Duke's home, and I hope to see him.

The family in Cincinnati had a grea tidea for a Christmas present. Big Smile I am asking myself if I should post pictures when we return home. Confused

Happy Model Railroading

The house is dark, Audrey came back with some things for us---o no!---and 'Spring' was busy being a 'Spring'---ie; snarfling my sw1200 off from the table---thanks for small miracles he does not try to dip that into the water like it was a teabag!!Whistling---stuff all over the place---and we are entertaining the neighbours she went visiting----MischiefSmile,Wink, & Grin

We are getting not quite so windy day tomorrow---we hope; my sister was telling me that Woodstock as well as here had areas with no power due to downed powerlines, fallen trees and branches as well as loose detritus from who knows where... Hope everyone pulls through without too many pieces taking off---

Just a cup of coffee please, ladies. Watching the news I hope you're all riding this crazy weather out all right. Looks like lots more snow in places and Rays' area is getting rising waters.

Thanks for the response Dick. I was just gob struck that the house had been rewired and no-one had checked the original stuff. We weren't using electric blankets in May, but we do have a couple of people in the house who think computers are made to be left on 24/7. One of those had the room where the fire started.

Well, time to get some shuteye. I'll try to check in tomorrow.   CUL, J.R.

Dick,

Yes, the fire is burning, but it is too dark to read by the fire.  Isn't it amazing how we need more light as our eyes get older?

Coffee please. After spending the afternoon setting a couple of bridges, laying some track and gluing the last couple of pieces of foam down, I've made my New Years resolution. I'm going to try and keep the train room tidy. At least clean it up when it starts to get difficult to move around instead of witing for it to get where you can't get around at all!

Lovely day today, no sun but real nice for the end of December. Ditches are draining and the sump pumps still working over time. That has got to be the best sump pump made 14yrs old and runs more than most people would imagine. Still going strong. Down to cycling every 10 seconds now. Yes seconds. When it gets down to 20 seconds I begin to feel a bit easier because at least I have time to start the generator before water comes out of the pit. High water table here. I knew there should be no basements here because when it was a field it was always standing water.Banged Head We are high up but I guess so is the water.

Well back to strightening up, The room I expanded into was sort of a storage room so alot of the stuff that lives there has no other home. Big hanging lamp that doesn't work anyone? Hate to get rid of it might fix it someday if we had a place for it. It came with three lights she wanted at a garage sale 2 years ago. Maybe I'll stick it out back in the truck that's behind the Pizza /bait /gas station until I get around to fixing it.Laugh.

I took the book on the cruise in September; read about 50 pages; and have not managed to get back to it.  Knowing the area made it an easy read.  I will get back to it.

Sue

SUE: Now that the holidays are almost over, you should be able to settle down to a nice cold winter's evening by the fire and finish the book.

Very warm here today, no record breaker though, that was 61 back in the early 70's.

I spent the afternoon in the new train room, and got two of the tables re-assembled. The layout of the tables will be different from the original room, as this room does not have the length of the old train room, but I have worked out a plan that will fit very nicely, and then break through the wall in two places for tunnels into a bigger adjacent room. Now if the workers don't go out on strike, we should be OK.

RAY: I know what you mean by "volunteers" at church. I have been a Lector since 1972 and we have lost more than we have gained since then.

J.R.: To answer your question regarding frayed wiring causing a fire without the circuit breaker popping, yes it most certainly can. The only type of breaker that would prevent that would be the new arc-breakers that are now code in many places for all bedroom circuits because to heated blankets. With regular breakers, they trip on either excessive current flow ( heat) , or a short circuit. Many times the old insulation in older homes deteriorates, and when the HOT lead ( black ) touches the metal box, it can arc and spark. Over time, this causes a buildup of carbon from all the arcing at that location/spot on the metal. Now you have a carbon film resistor which will conduct electricity back through the neutral on the duplex outlet or ground on some outlets, get hot, and can actually get the wood stud on fire.

 Later guys,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !!  Good evening, All.  I stopped in for a quick cider.  We still have snow, but I will make it to work tomorrow.

Larry and I got a bunch of projects done this week.  I now have book cases under the layout.  Books, yes, but room to store kits and whatever.  We trimmed out three windows and painted them.  I also moved my sewing table into the computer room. Whew.

Barry,

Now we have one regular mailman, last May the regular guy retired and we had our share of temps, but we have had the same guy now for almost 5 months.  He still drops packages off here for the wrong street or the wrong house on my street.  My neighbor hood was built for the troops coming home from WWII (1947 - 1950) and there are 5 streets with my same house number, but the street names are diffrent.

Jeff:

Haven't seen the package yet, maybe it will show up this week, but I doubt it.  My STUPID mailman prob dropped it off at the wrong house again, but hey he is showing improvement; after my last complaint he learned that even if I didn't have mail, but the little red flag was up he should stop by my house anyway.  I guess he didn't understand the concept of picking up mail.

Lee

Now Lee, you have to cut him some slack.  I mean, it's a difficult job.......so many variables ya know.  Pick up mail, drop off mail, pick up mail, drop off mail......It's a lot to keep up with!

Good Afternoon All.

Ah the US Postal service. Now don't get me wrong, for the most part they do a superb job, and truth be known, the CFO's father was a letter carrier, but lately..... We've had continuing problems with the mail being delivered to the wrong house and then when we had the fire, mail continued to be delivered to the house (I know at least then they had the right house) even after we had the address changed to the shop. Eventually I put a couple of extra large rubber bands around the box with a nice note and finally I just took the box down. If most of the issues seem to be around subs,  gee they seem to get a lot of days off. Fortunately subs or not we seem to have no troubles with the mail service at the shop so the mail all goes there now.

61 degrees out with overcast skies and a drizzle on and off all day. I think 61 is a record here of December. Spent the last two days taking all the wiring out of the house and boy was I suprised. The house had been rewired prior to our buying it in the 70's and we'd reworked and remodeled twice once adding to the second floor and also putting a full machine shop in the basement with a 200 amp service and a phase converter. The buuilding inspector flagged the system and required it all be brought up to current code (mostly more outlets) and wanted all the bx (armored) cable removed. I knew some bits of the original wiring remained but was shocked to find how much rubber coated fabric wrapped wiring remained. To top it all off, a junction box had the four main runs for the first floor twisted together and covered with old style fabric covered friction tape. When I opened the box, the insulation just fell off the wires. The fire marshall never determined the cause of the fire and I'm beginning to wonder if I just found it. We didn't find any breakers popped after the fire, but I wonder if you can generate enough heat to start a fire without the breaker blowing? Anyway the wires are all stripped out of the house now and ready for the electrician to start tomorrow.

As far as New Years resollutions are concerned, I resolve to get the house finished so we can move back in and eventually restart the layout once things are settled. One can hope anyway.

Der - those winds up north have been wicked. Mom has lost power several times down Lockport way and has had trees knocked over and trellisses flattened by the wind. She's not as far from the water as you but on higher ground. Some of the gusts are clocking in at 140 kph plus! Do you have trouble with the windows getting etched by the salt spray? She's got all plastic covered storms now because the aluminum got eaten alive by the salt air.

Any word on Jerry? Our prayers for both he and Sally and anyone else in need.

Not much else going on just now, but I'm looking forward to going to the Big E show at Springfield next month. I need a train break from the shop and house.     CUL, J.R.

PAUL; you have HOW many cats?---oh well, hopefully not all of them will start collecting trains!!

LEE; do you have one mailman or do you end up getting different one's a lot? We used to live in one part of town were it seemed that we had a different guy do the route every day. Talk about confusing

Afternoon Gang:

Tom it sounds like the "kids" are having fun. We have four kittens that come in the house every night so they don't dissapear. We have coyotes in the area and have missed some cats. The three grown cats stay out and do there job. Every now and then a dead rat shows up on the poarch. Good kitties. The four kittens have figured out how to get out of the box in the morning so this morning we were awakened to a thumping on the bed room door. They were in teh hall rough housing and bumping the door. After abit I went down stairs to find them. Things were too quite. They were sitting on the sofa in the living room looking at the stairs with "it's about time" look on their faces. When I opened the front door the rush was on. One of these nights if I can get up the courge I'll let them stay out of the box. Am I really that foolish? Don't answere that.

Well I need to get back to the shop and give that filling cabnit another coat of paint.

See you all later.

With all the rain, it's a swamp out there. Busy working on easy tasks today. No train news to report. Wife is spending the night with her folks to help them out with meds and such (they get confused).

Feel free to post andy & all types of RR photos to inspire some of us un-inspired folks. Thanks in advance. Enjoyed Jeffreys colorful old building pic.

You still using that thing?  Thats been a pretty good camera, huh?  Shoot, I had it for a couple of years before I passed it off to you.

Yep! Still using it. It's not much good for close-up shots but it's good for shots in the field.

It'll do a good cloeup shot if you back off a few feet and then zoom in using the optical zoom.  I got decent shots that way, but lighting can be tricky then.

Temps were great.....NO GLOVES IN DECEMBER!  The wind wasn't bad in the morning, but it did pick up in the afternoon some.  My bike is almost 700lbs dry, so it's pretty stable in those winds.  There were quite a few other bikes out yesterday, but I noticed those with lighter bikes went home earlier, 'cause I only saw the bigger boys out playing later.

Oh, I agree completely about the temps. I was able to get out to my Worktable area and catalog some trains And it;s not the bike Mom and I comment on, it;s the neck being snapped back into the butt.

Glad you had fun though.

Late Merry Christmas!

Dad says we are going to bring out my layout this coming week. I picked up MR Mag last night; looks good. The one time I don't make a Christmas list and I for get to ask for a boxcar to practice weathering on. I'll have to console myself with Madden '09 (for the time beingMischief ).

Good morning everybody.  Its just a very windy day today.  not to cold, just windy.

I didn't touch the layout at all yesterday.  Kinda went to the malls and other stores.  I will work on it some today after the Steeler game.

I need to work on my fantasy football teams.  One game left and I need some good points from my team. Its free so I am not worried about losing any money.

The wife is going to help me finish up the backdrop, later today.  I am hoping to have the upper part of the layout done this week.  I will still add some tress, and what nots, but as far as track its done.  It was just a basic loop.  Nothing fancy.

Well stay warm, and keep out of the wind.
