Hello everybody ...

We have had company from Chicago area in recent days. Here's sone of the stuff we saw with them.

Here's photos of the group of eight that were on My Old Kentucky Dinner Train of Bardstown Kentucky operated by R J Corman. The train has 2 FP7's and 4 Budd cars.

In second photo ... left to right Dan, Toni, Carol, Gus, Shelley, myself, Reggie, Mary Ann. (Reggie and Mary Ann are from Chicago area. The rest of us a neighbors on Lake Barkley, KY)

After luch on the dinner train, we stopped at the Kentucky Railway Museum in New haven (15 miles south of Bardstown.)

On the way home, we stopped in Central City for ice cream, and we saw this item;

Two days earlier, we saw Fort Donelson near Dover, TN. The South defend the TN border here in a battle that had over 4,000 deaths in one day. Kentucky was a neutral state and the North passed through KY via land and water. Most cannons could fire an 8" cannon ball, but one of them shot 12 inch balls weighing 125 pounds a distance of three miles.

I knew if I sat in this back booth long enough that some of you would start showing up for lunch.

Garry, It looks like you had a great trip.  Thanks for sharing your photos.

refill, please & thanks.

***Jerry, would enjoy seeing a pic of that model when you have it all built. Hey, any more circus car work going on?

***Garry, what a grand trip that must have been. That Monon looks mighty sharp. Had a model of that one in N scale, but sold it off to help fund my switch to steam. My wife will enjoy viewing your Civil War pics when she returns.

Foamers are working away now. That foam is tough stuff, especially going with the 2" thickness. Only place it looks like I'll need to work on after they leave is right behind one of the showers, where they couldn't reach. Figure I'll cut a hole and drop handfulls of insulation (the type normally blown in). Not a big deal.

With sheetrock going up next week, the train room is looking like a reality, rather than a "one day" thing. Can't wait!

Think I'll head out to the pasture and start collecting some future trees.

Garry,

Looks like a great trip and thanks for sharing those pictures!

Fergi, I got to work with your boss this week, Capt Spuerry (sp) from the Canadian CG.  He came down for our International Ice Breaking Conferance.

Afternoon, Zoe - I'll have a RBF and a nice hefty bowl of chili. Thanks! Good day for it - in Cape G., it's supposed to rain 'most all day. Should be good for the gardens, I guess.

Garry, nice line of photos from the dinner train trip.

Jeff, when I get ready to go to DCC, I know who I'll ask if I have decoder install questions. Yeah!! Still want to see how that coaling tower comes out.

Sue, I'd think that the plastic would kind of run to the bottom of the stove. Even lasercut wood should be an improvement. Wink I forgot - which/whose coaling tower are you building?

Boggles my mind to think of O scale brass locos. Let's see, pay for an O scale layout with brass locos, or buy a new Porsche...hmmm.. whaddya think, PC? Confused Which one would be more affordable?

Rob, sounds like they might just get your house done (in spite of themselves? Evil

Think I'll join Sue and the crew in the back booth - seems to be where everyone's congregating today. Dinner

Blessings and prayers (and stay warm today with this cool rain),

Jerry,  Hope that you are having fun with that kit.  The laser cut wood seems to go faster than plastic for me.  I have a fire going again today.  It might make 60 today, but it is windy and damp this morning, and the wood fire takes the chill off nicely.

I don't think you're supposed to use those laser kits for firewood! Wink

Yeah,  It might flare up with the clear sealer, huh?

 Hi all,

Things are kinda quiet at the office so I have time for a quick post.

Jerry - We started running our furnace last week. My wife wanted to wait until Nov 1 but it got too unbearably cold for my 10yr-old daughter one night. The tank is full of last winter's grossly-overpriced heating oil, I need to lock-in a supply contract soon at these prices before it starts going up again...

Rob I'm familiar with that sense of excitement over a future train room, I experienced it ~4 years ago when I finally got my garage insulated and had a heat pump installed. It had taken me awhile before I had the funds available to do that, and I couldn't believe it was finally happening!

Garry - great vacation pix! My favorite was the out-of-window shot going over the trestle - reminded me of an excursion train that used to run over the Maryland Midland (former Western Maryland), we went over a trestle like that and my wife freaked out [she's afraid of heights].  The train was pulled by a pair of ex-Long Island RR F7's.

Paul, I guess with a backyard like yours, there's plenty of space to go with that large scale.  How long you figure it'll take to amass a fleet of ore jennies that size?Wink

Jeff, I might need to do some brain-pickin' with you on decodering an Athearn SW7.  There's one sitting on my dead line as window dressing, but I sure would love to get it running again.

I've been busy working on a loco servicing area, just finished scratchbuilding a pair of Snyder fuel cranes last night.  I'll try to get some pics and post them here later.

Larry just stopped in for a quick soda on his way through.

Jim,  It is the Walthers coaling tower.  I have the main tower assembled, and the stairway is in three pieces.  I plan to attach them after all the pieces are painted.  I am hoping that Saturday that will happen.

Sorry about the rain.  We have sunshine with some clouds.

Sorry I didn't stop by yesterday, didn't have time.

We won 32-0. I played both at my normal spot (defensive end) and also on the first offense at left guyard after only 2 days of practice there. And i only messed up once I think. I got two tackles that I can remember, and threw one block that sprang a #7 for a TD (ya'll remember him, right?). So we placed third in the county. Only 2 weeks until church league basketball starts, but that's only a game on each Saturday and one practice a week.

Bring it on! The coaling station is on hold at the moment. I'm trying to get rid of the remnants of a bad sinus infection. I don't need to be doing detailed work when an uncontrollable coughing fit hits.

The problems with the old BB switchers are usually pretty simple. The gear boxes are virtually bullet-proof. The problem I had with mine was purely electrical. No power was getting to the motor. Turned out that some solder flux had flowed under the contact strip on the bottom of the motor and had dried in between the strip and the brush spring, effectively insulating the spring from the strip. Once the flux was scraped off it ran fine and  still does.

I'll have a BLT on rye for dinner, thanks!

***Sawyer, CONGRATS on the decisive victory!Thumbs Up

Insulation guys are DONE. There was a big mound of foam on a sheet of plastic which I saved for the wife's train table. When the time comes, I'll glue it down and carve it for her. Funny thing is, she came out to make sure I wasn't about to throw it away, having the same "train of thought" in mind.Big Smile Looks like there are a few spots I'll have to hit with a can of "Great Foam" this weekend, where their spray didn't fill a few gaps. No biggie.

Studio smells of fumes, so am going to open up a bunch of windows now.

Looks like potentially 1" of rain heading our way tonight & tomorrow. Had strong winds last night and most of today. Lost one smaller old/dead tree so far. Need to move the car & truck out of the way of potential harm.

There be lots of future trees hanging upside-down in my workshop now. Had a good time out in the pasture snipping them off the various weeds. Miniature horses tried to help me, until they figured out it wasn't going to lead to them being fed.Laugh

Good evening, it took a while to find the Diner, someone changed the sign out front while I was up in New Hampshire. I leave for two weeks and everything has changed.

Lots of leaves down when I got back, so we had to cut the grass and get the leaves picked up, bring in the garden hoses, shut off the outside faucets, the usual drills of each Fall. It has been unseasonably cold here in the Northeast, in fact, the Northeast was the coldest part of the lower 48 states today. Tonight we have frost warnings out in every part of New England including the Islands and Cape Cod. Some cold spots will hit the teens here in Southern New England tonight. The wood stove is cranking, and I am very happy that I decided to bring in more wood than usual this Fall.

I see that Jeff has been very busy installing all his decoders, Sue is back from the great woods of Oregon, Tom, condolences on the loss of Lowell, Rob, I see progress has been made on your house, J.R. it looks like you also have had progress on your house. Fergie, are you the only one who has missed me? And No, I was not lamenting the loss to Tampa, considering all the injuries to key players, they did a great job.

Duke, Faye is the boss, we all know that, so unless you want your caboose uncoupled, better listen to that little lady.LOL

DER JOHN, FERGIE, LUC: One dog night tonight !!!!!!

PC: Our favorite season is almost over buddy !

GARRY: Very nice photos, thank you for sharing with us.

MRR: When I returned, there was a box that arrived, from ModelExpo, it had the items that I ordered before I left, and they included a free gift, a very nice xacto knife set in it's own carry case with many different blades for kit use. This special is still ON until November in case anyone is interested, free shipping also.

Sign - Welcome back Duce

Sue Here is a pic of the Walthers coaling tower that I built and excuse the mess™ as I was in the process of moving things so that I could change and add to the benchwork. I decided to try to paint it after assembly as I tend to be impatient at times and don’t care to watch paint dry,if you know what I mean.  Really watch the directions and check things two or three times for the right fit and don't ask how I found that out.

That’s about it

Best to all on sick call and those recovering AngelAngelAngel

Talk to you later

Good evening guys and gals.  How about a chicken sandwich.  MMMMMMMMMMMM

Well I have been working all week at the new job, and don't get on much anymore.  Plus my wife started work at 5:00pm and I haven't seen here since 6:30am.  I guess thats a good thing.  Whistling

I have been working on a boxcar with some rusting and fading it.  I hope to have it done this weekend.  I will have to post some pictures of this Saturday.  Its also probably a good time to work on the layout, when I am home alone.  But................I need money for that. Hopefully we will be back on our feet in another week.  Plus my b-day is at the end of Nov, and I have been hinting around a NS engine, hehehehe.

Have a goodnight guys, and the movie "Silver Streak" is starting.  Nothing like a good Gene Wilder movie!!!

Evening Gang: Well I'm prety shure that the problems I'm having posting are with the forum and the version of Windows Internet Explorer that I'm using. I downloaded IE8 when Bergie suggested that be done on the post that said the new set up was coming. I'm going to call my friend and find out exactely which version I have. If it's IE8 I'll load IE7 and delete IE8.

I did some more painting of the flat and gons. I figure that tomorrow afternoon I'll be able to flip the car bodies up right and finish painting them.

Ken it really does help if your back yard, infact all your yard is mesured in acres. Also you need more then the kitchen table for a shop. Right now I'm working in two different buildings to have enough room. The barn is still the shop of choise but the painting is beeing done in the tractor shed. I would have done the painting next to the barn but the wind drove me to the tractor shed.

Garry thanks for the pictures. I liked the shots of Ft. Donnelson. I'm a history buff also.

Duce it's good to have you back. Have a cup on me. What have you been up to?

Well I'm really tired so I'll hit the sack.

Evening all--spent the day out on the layout just running trains.  Actually running my track-cleaning car--seems I have a couple of spots that have either lost a little current (like that NEVER happens, LOL?) or I sqashed a really BIG bug with one of my Yellowstones my last operating session (BLEAHCCH!).

Worked on a cute little Rio Grande 1700 series Northern last night--one from Key.  Had a hitch in it's gitalong, couldn't find it.  Finally disconnected the worm from the gear, ran it on a piece of glass--same thing-'LURCH-CLICK!'.  Got VERY frustrating.  I kinda/sorta jerked it backward and a piece of BALLAST fell out of the left-side eccentric.  Now how it got way up there in the eccentric is news to me, but after all that, the little darlin' runs just fine, now.  Ah, brass!  Ah, steam!  Ah, loose BALLAST!! Whistling  Time to vacuum, don't you think?

Sue:  Hmm--is that brass challenger you're thinking of the same thing I have on order from Sunset--as in Z-6?  If it is, then it's sure nice to know that someone ELSE doesn't want just a UP clone (okay, now I'll shut up),  I ordered the GN version that they didn't like, but my Rio Grande has somehow got an interchange with GN (go figure!) and I think those Z's were just about the handsomest Challengers ever made, except for the big Rio Grande Baldwin L-105's, of course.

The Lowell Memorial Caboose is sitting on the kitchen table (Spooky hasn't stolen it yet) and right now I'm eyballing it as far as improvements.  Remember, this is a Silver Streak wood kit from the late 'fifties, so the details aren't going to be as 'fine' as current rolling stock, but I'm going to do what I can with it.  I've decided on steam-era Rio Grande oxide brown for the color, and I'm hitting the LHS tomorrow to look for some other-than-Roman-lettering for his name on the side.

Jim:  Could you e-mail me a copy of the portrait you did of Mr. Mellow?  For some strange reason, the photo locked out before I could copy it.  My computer is just WEIRD about stuff like that.

Best to all, and God Bless

Tom

Cary - welcome back, I haven't been around here for a few years myself.  Just resumed posting about a week ago.

I said earlier I'd post a photo or two of my scratchbuilt Snyder fuel cranes; well, here's one - it's the only usable one I was able to get out of a dozen attempts.  My Rebel (2004 vintage) doesn't have a macro setting so I can't do closeups with it, and these guys are tiny!

Good evening Diners!  A small JR Decaf Regular please Chloe. (Seems I’ve a recurrence of a 1980s vintage gastric ulcer, ad the MO has told me to cut the caffeine intake. Sigh

Duce! back, it’s good to hear from you again. Yes, there are some familiar faces, Ken L has found his way over recently, and Lupo dropped in the other day after quite a vacation as well.Thumbs Up  We seem to have lost Noah, either  to school work or a girl friend, it’s hard to say…and Scott landed his dream job with Norfolk Southern, and hasn’t been in for quite some time.

In researching for details I need to progress my container crane, I came across a site this evening that UP fans in particular, but mrrs generally will appreciate.  It didn’t give me the info I was looking for, but he view is spectacular! http://www.robl.w1.com/Transport/intermod.htm

I’ve had no end of delays in constructing the bin into which the power cable for the hoist spreader coils. Finally settled last night on a design change, and went with this type – sorry I can’t post the pic itself as it won’t copy from the site - http://www.fotosearch.com/AGE035/f58-396059/    Here’s my build as of this afternoon, based on the plastic core of a dental floss dispenser. I tried to make my own (thinner walled) bin, but it wouldn’t come out circular. Grrr. You can see the system I’ve had to devise to hold the bin and cable feed chute steady while I glue supports to fasten them together. Next are those slanted supports tot  he top of the tube. That shouldn’t be quite as fiddly!   Other spreader sub-assemblies are to the upper left in the photo.

Fergie:

but he seems to be mending and has a smile and just in time for the Dartmouth show next month. You going?
…Sorry to hear about George, he has a tough row to hoe. As to the
Dartmouth show, didn’t know it was on.  When would that be?

Tom: Those folks at the pet cemetery really took care of you.  Good to know that there are fine things happening when the news seems full of the sordid and disastrous. The memorial caboose is a great idea. Sorry about Lowell, but you know you aren’t alone in this.

Rob:  Quite the saga on the foam…using the surplus for “Mountains in Minutes”® is brilliant!

Morgan: If you read this sometime, the laptop our local museum has came with a separate regular keyboard as part of the package. It makes all the difference in the world, as I agree with you, laptop keyboards are not my idea of fun.   Spent some time this morning getting the community sound system out of storage and finding out what plugs in where for a couple of mics. Our Heritage Society has an outdoor “Ghostly Tales” event planned for Sunday evening, and I guess I’m on point for mc and sound man. Rain is forecast, Oh Joy!

Paul: All that trouble you are having with no word wrap working hasn’t happened to me yet. However, I do find that pasting from WORD into the Reply field here results in all the spacing being lost, unless I do about 5 “Enter” between each paragraph. I’m going to try to put forced breaks in this, and see what happens.

Gary:  Those are great photos of your trip, thanks for posting them.

Dick:
DER JOHN, FERGIE, LUC: One dog night tonight !!!!!!
…Can’t speak for the Dartmouth contingent, but down the shore here, the forecast was for a low of just 32°F by morning---so we’ll not have  to have Rosie on the bed tonight!

Sawyer:
What sucks is the team we lost to who went to the championship won 14-6. And I know that we could have won that game too.
…yeah, that sucks!  Still, there’s always next year!

I stepped out for a while, but decided to stop by for a RBF.

Dick,  I should be around more for the next 2 weeks.  I started The White Cascades, and am finding it a good read.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Duke,  I missed your link for your coaling tower.  I have assembled everything except.  The stairway is in 3 pieces, the roof pieces are not attached, and the window plastic is not in.  You are so right about the directions.  The order that they suggest is not necessarily the easiest way to connect the parts.  I will let you know later how the rest of it goes.

Tom, I haven't been drooling over them lately, but that is the one.  The NP of course.

John, it's the third (farthest right) of a set of tabs that appear just above the text of the post you're replying to:

At least, this is the form that comes up for me when I click on the "Reply" button within an individual post [not on "Quick Reply" at the bottom of the page] And I've given people that same advice about using a word processor countless times, but obviously I'm better at preaching it than practicing it, LOL

Duke,  Thanks.  Is that photo before you painted?  Or did you choose similar colors?  We decided to paint closely to the original colors; attach the stairs and roof; and then weather.  I will let you know if that works.  The stairs are so fragile.  I have knocked a railing off more times than I can count at this point.Laugh

Good morning all, Sn*w for Sunday or Monday. Worked 3 half days this week (12hr a day) so I haven’t had much time to visit. Congratulations Packers! 32-0 that’s a big shut out! My coffee tasts a little salty this morning, or wait must be from my crying! last night; a Digitrax Empire builder new in the box, with a 1 year warranty sold for $150.00. On the bay and I missed it. CSX those fuel cranes look really good, great job! Der, I sent you an email last night;  I can’t mail this box out unless I have a day time phone number for the customs form.  If you can shoot me an email tonight thanks.   Lee

 Good morning.

It's 45 and clear here. That barbed wire fence between here and the north pole has done fell down. The high is expected to be in the mid 70's and it will be sunny.

Well, this morning I went and did it! I turned the heater on for the first time this season, just long enough to take the chill off. I must remember next year to vacuum the dust off the coils before doing that again. What a smell! Yesterday I went over to see what progress is being made on my nieces trailer. They've got half of the sheetrock up so far and are wondering what type of paneling to get. Some of the major appliances are in already, refrigerator (they had to take the entire front door frame out of the wall to get it in), oven/range (electric), microwave (and is it a BIG one). The central AC/heat is in (all electric), electric water heater. There won't be anything in the trailer that uses gas. Guess she took a lesson from me on that one. I don't have any gas appliances either.
