Duke.... Here's how I solved the AHM 4-4-0 drive shaft problem a few years ago. I no longer have the engine, but I recall doing the following find a long screw. I think I used a 2-56. Cut the head off, and cut to the correct length. Solder a hex nut at each end. It worked perfectly.

***Paul, that modular-style beer line article was interesting. As for your "block down the middle of the layout with backdrops on each side" idea, perhaps my wife will go for that on her layout. Might make modeling her two concepts on one table a little easier, without having to give up half the train room to her.
Tile guys finished today and their work looks sharp. We're pleased. All that is left is the carpet, some bathroom gear with last bit of plumbing, & the front porch screens. I'll install the remaining fans in the next day or two. Still need to finish that deck out front, but I am using the weather as an excuse presently. It did snow today, even if none of it stuck.

I'm up a little to early, can't sleep- which can be either entering mania or still in depression, hard to tell sometimes. Sinuses don't help as I can't breathe the CPAP machine and O2, neither does the headache I have aquired. But besides that I am wired, a hint of mania approaches. SO I sit hear playing a favorite old Irish tune over and over and looking at MR site. {don't tell my other half- worries when I get wrapped up in one song over and over)
JimRCGMO every bulb in our entire house has a full spectrum daylight florescent bulb in it. We did that to help, but nothing really replaces the sun. Regular florescents do not work for me. The psych ward has a "sun room where every 2x4 ceiling space has a florescent light in it except them ones for HVAC. They have found it doesn't work as well as thought. My Gma was fortunate to go to FL during winter moths to help her depression and SAD {long since passed}. But I am on disability and can't afford that. The lamps you spoke of are expensive, can be hard to get and almost impossible to get paid on a prescription order for one.They consider medications should work, forget that the Abilify alone that I take for Bipolar is nearly $400.00/ month! Forget the others.
I also DID get to HD, but got so involved in *new tools* and *needed * furnace filters in our size that we left WITHOUT the wood for the tree layout!!! DOH!
Robby P. Jury duty is the civic duty of every citizen of our democracy. One would think they would pay at least min. wage for a day of duty, but they don't. Some places DO have laws that employers must pay difference, and should be standard across the country. Proving hardship is all but impossible almost. I've been called twice in my life. Didn't have to serve but a day of waiting either time, as the cases settled outside of court. Being one of the po' folks (can't even afford to buy the other "o" or the "r" in poor - Vanna, a free letter please?) I feel for you. If not already, apply for HEAP {home energy assistance program} for heating help, and food stamps?? to help you out. Heap available to those making less than $43,000/ year. Look in your phone book under governemental services, or call your social services office for more info.
Cold snap coming here soon, can hear the $$$ in heat running on the furnace already.BUT, it IS December, after all, I guess. HEAP will help, awaiting our award letter.

The high will be around 60 and it will be sunny.Yesterday I decided to bite the bullet nad took my car to the local mechanic to find out what's ailing it. He checked the fuel pressure. It was fine. He then did a computer diagnostic. The only thing that popped up was the EGR valve. Problem: the parts store wants $200+ for this little lump of metal. That'll be the day! I went to the local scrap yard and got a used one for $27. I'll get around to putting it on sometime this week. Today I have to go to DeRidder to get measured for my new shoes. Jeff, NY Medicaid isn't much better. You'd think they could do better for those of us who rely on it. And I actually have to pay them a fee of $156,00 /month to have their BS. This year they seem, for no reason, to turn down every claim against my secondary coverage of Medicaid for no reason the first time its submitted. Then I get a bill and have to have them re-submit it again. And I PAY for this lovely privilege.
Thank the great articulateds designers that Medicare works well as my primary and also covered all but $102. of the $12,476.00 in prescriptions this last year.

I checked in yesterday but the computer ate my post somewhere along the line (didn't even use any bad words). I'll have a regular and a blueberry muffin please Zoe. Got a second New Haven I-5 ordered for my birthday this one on sale from BLI with the later small lettering. That's about the only train stuff of late and I guess it'll sit in a case until i get a layout back.
Spent the weekend stripping out the last of the plaster and lath in the house and broom swept both floors. That made me feel so much better that we went out and raked the debris up in the yard and raked the ruts around the dumpster level. With luck we'll have the siding all on by weeks end and the house exterior buttoned up. We went with fake cedar shakes and I have to admit they look superb. Now on to the heating system and plumbing. We wanted to do radiant floor heating and are looking hard at that. The great temptation is to do it ourselves, but with the shop move coming up fast, I just don't see the available time.
Jeff - that layout of yours looks better and better all the time. The tree is great - what barnd? I'm sure I'm not alone in noticing the Rio Grande diesel escaped with just a patch job - thanks. That's one of my favorite paint schemes.
Jury duty is an obligation we need to fulfil, but I agree the compensation is a joke in most states. I just finished up here in Connecticut and was selected to actually serve but the case settled the week before the trial was to begin so I'm safe for another 3 years. Most states do allow you to change the time of year and here they made it clear when we all reported that if you were going to suffer economic hardship, you'd be excused. If you think about it, no one is going to want to have their case heard by someone who doesn't want to be there or resents being forced to serve. Either way best of luck getting that straightened out to your satidfaction.
Gotta run - lots to do again today in the shop. We're starting to worry about the economic downturn a bit more as requests for new jobs has slowed a lot. We're ok at least for the next few months with the work load we have in place now, but I'll be interested to see how next season works out. CUL, J.R.

Galaxy, I agree with the min. pay for juror duty. I have been asked before, but have gotten out of them (moving, doctor notice). My family (wife, and I) make over $43,000. I don't think I can apply for the services. Its just that I was unemployed for 4 months, and we are finally starting to get on our feet again. The job I have now is through a temp. service. The job I am working at doesn't hire straight through. They want to make sure you will last before you start making good money. There workers avg. $15-$20 a hour. So...I understand that.
Now with that said, I make about $300-$325 a week. That court case could either be a day, or even weeks. One day pay check won't be missed, but 2 or more starts to add up. I just thought every company had to pay something, but I guess not.

When I was on Jury duty, we lived in Michigan. It was a frivolous lawsuit case, but we were instructed to take it seriously. It was a waste of time, and the defendant won. Only advanatge to me was the Jury room had a good view of the GTW yard in Pontiac, MI. The pay was not much, but at least I was paid to watch trains.
JR ... That's a lot of work for you. Hopefully, whe nall is done , you will end up with a much improved layout. I'm looking forward to seeing your city scnes again complete with a replica of the diner.

Last night during supper the large temporary crown fell out. This crown is attached to two teeth to serve as a permanent bridge for a tooth I had pulled a couple months ago. Lucky I have a dentist appt. today for molds for the permanent one anyway.
No modeling after all yesterday, but I did make some major headway on a lot of other items I have to complete.
Looks I get "Top Honors" this morning, so eat up hearty folks! I can afford it as I just received my first COLA from the Teachers Retirement System a few days ago. Pro-rated for my birthday, it came to $4.03. It will be $30 a month from now on. First raise I've had in 9 years so I look forward to spending it...........

***Robby, Jury Duty can be a costly pain, but is important. Sat on a couple trials when much younger. Back then I was working 3 & 4 part time jobs to get buy. Since then I figured out the mention of my father having been in the CIA would automatically get one of the lawyers in each case to have me dismissed from the selection process.
With colder temps the grout on the tiles in the back have not completely dried yet. Want to finish putting up the ceiling fans today, but might have to wait another day.
Stripped four stalls & filled with fresh shavings. Made all the hay runs except for the miniatures pasture (horses/donkeys/cow). Taking a coffee reak before heading back out to finish up.

Jury duty for 'free' (or, worse yet, costing several days' worth of wages) should at least recognize that it may be our civic duty, but that cases that drag on (and on, and on...) - often needlessly - don't make sense for anyone. Suprisingly, I have never been called for jury duty (yet). Go figure!
Galaxy, you're right on the cost of those lamps. I hadn't seen any word on studies of their effectiveness in a long while, so I can't speak to that part. Do be taking care of yourself, though.

Cold day in Cape G. today, but at least we have some sunshine This morning was move-to-the-other-end-of-the-building time, as the crane was hear to lift our old furnace/air unit off and the new one in. Really fun, trying to find a place to take phone calls and to see one person who came in with a medication question for her doctor. Luckily, they were done fairly quickly.
I'll be in the window booth, enjoy watching the afternoon peddler freight do its thing.

Okay I'm now looking for a stun gun for cats I don't want to hurt my babies just mellow them out a little . Remember the Xmas tree ( yes I know its all of 26") well they took off with it last night as we were trying to sleep . Pulled it out of its base over the trains ( the trains were all still on the track lol) and took the tree to the den. (I think they were thinking of putting it in the fireplace and roasting marshmallows )
Or I'm going to have to get them tranquilizers and give it to them each night
Well I'm getting ready to take track into the VA so I can make 2 loops one around each tree on the 3rd flood ( community living centers) nursing homes (we have 2 wings up there thats for our fultime residents.)

JIM-No not lunch break. In order to cut o.t. we work 4 days. Three of my normal days are 11 or more hours on the clock. Mondays, on the clock, is 8 to 10 hours. Used to get 110 hours average for my two weeks, now lucky to get 83 or more. Usually leave home befor 6 and get home around 7:30. Doesn't leave much time to get on 'puker. About every two months I rotate on a saturday to do dialysis. Otherwise I do laundry and other things to help Deb.

Well, I'm probably going to stop working on my 4x8 for a little while (right now you're rolling your eyes and thinking "oh great, ANOTHER layout change. Kid, stick with something!"). However, hear me out:
I got 102 trackplans, and the layout on page 14, I think, is a little 2x4 layout that, with a little modifications (swapping four switches to lefts instead of right, I'd only need one switch, and changing up the scenic aspects of the layout a little), I get a nice small Appalachian shortline set in 1959. Calling it the "Lake Bealuh Western", in 1959 it is a coal hauler. However, from its start in 1874-1903, it was a logging line, but the tree industry dried up. But three months later, coal was discovered in them thar hills, saving the line from abandonment. They dieslized in 1955, buying a GP7. I think the supplies to get this layout sceniced and running will be my christmas list, so I can have something running that I can enjoy while building my main layout. And I find a home for my GP9 (will turn GP7 w/ a new GP7 shell, instead of a new GP9 shell). I'll just need a half dozen frieght cars (3 40' boxcars, 3 55 ton fishbelly hoppers). Paint scheme will include NYC jade green and a dark black. Will draw up a track plan for it (aka plan in RTS 8.0 so I can play around with the scenic features). I can also expand this at some point to include the LBW's other town, but for now, I xcan get the beginning and end into this small layout.

This week I'm babysitting my girlfriend's kitten. I call the kitten "Possum" because that's what her fur length and coloring reminds me of. She'd pass for a possum if she had a long snout.
The most fun Possum has had was when I sorted through a box of a thousand or so tiny bags of model railroad detail parts I've accumulated over the years. She jumped at every package as I tossed them in various piles to sort them. Luckily, Possum hasn't knocked around my half-assembled kits and assorted parts lying on the dining room table. So far, she's only torn up a couple of paper napkins. Good thing she sleeps much of the time.

Not sure how'd you do that. The plan as drawn has 3 left-hand turnouts and only 3 right-hand turnouts. You probably mistaked the turnout in front of the station as a right-hand turnout. The plan's arrangement eliminates an S-curve for the cross-over there.

I replaced the EGR valve on my car today. It improved things a bit but it's still running a bit rough. Being that the EGR valve I put on is used it may be bad also, so I'll get another one when I can and try it. If that doesn't improve things then I'll have to go over the vacuum lines (groan) one by one to see if there are any leaks anywhere. I'm looking forward to that like I would to a root canal without anesthesia. To top things off I lost my glasses. I had placed them on the front of the car between the hood and the windshield while I was working on the car. When I finished I went for a test drive to a neighbors place 3 miles away. It wasn't until after I got back that I realized what I did. I've searched the road side between my place and my neighbors place from the car and on foot to no avail. I guess I'm gonna have to figure out a way to come up with $300 for new glasses. Not an easy trick when your total monthly income is $627. There's not gonna be any train money in the budget for 5 or 6 months I guess.
