Man! I just watched the 3D version of 'Journey to the center of the earth'. What a rush! On the MR front all I've done today is put together my new fire station and unpack the Shell Auto Center and the Atlas Passenger Station.

Bon Soir Mes Amis!

Just a little French as my wife and I just got back last night from a week in Paris. She's had such a rough year that I thought a visit to her favourite city over Christmas would be just the ticket. Turns out I was right as we both had a great time. We stayed in a wonderful old hotel that is right across the street from the Louvre museum and therefore close to a lot of the major attractions.

We arrived in Paris on Christmas Eve and after an little supper, we went to Notre Dame cathederal for the midnight mass. Not that we are religious but it is quite marvelous. The crowds were huge but it does hold a few thousand. The music was wonderful and the organ is spectacular. I expect Tom would have enjoyed it. We also went to a concert in another church( the Madeleine) with a string ensemble who played The Four Seasons with a truly marvelous violinist.

We did a lot of walking as most people do there and although it was cold by their standards we found the +2C temps rather warm after -30 in Winnipeg. We also had a few truly great meals  in small cafes and also one in a major hotel restaurant called Le Cinq that was a high spot of the visit. While it is more expensive to eat in restauants there than here, the food also is generally a lot better. The French do take their food very seriously.

I didn't get to any hobby shops that sold model RR items but there really are only a few in all of Paris. It seems that model railroading isn't a very big hobby in France compared to England or Germany.

Well we are off tomorrow to pick up Pippa, that is if she is still talking to us after dumping her with our friends in Minnesota. I also have an order of some N guage track waiting for me so I can try out those 2 N scale locos I have. It will be interesting to see what N is like compared to HO. If I like it I plan on building a small N guage layout.

I read a lot of the back posts but didn't see any from Jerry. Has anyone heard from him? Is he OK?

Hope everyone had a great Christmas and also I want to wish a Happy New Year to all.

CN Charlie

Hope each of you has had a great New Years Day!  I sure have!  Got to spend a few hours playing with my favorite little girl Olivia (my Granddaughter).

At 17 months, she is learning how to be gentle with my kitties (this is my 19 pounder Blackie who has taken a liking to her except when she gets rough).

She is also planning on becoming a model railroader (if her grandpa has any say) and was trying on the engineers cap.

Hey guys, I had a lazy day, my wife took my son over to Grandma's house, so I spent the day in my pajama pants Homer Simpson slippers watching a Looney Tunes marathon on the Cartoon Network. It was a nice quiet day, of cartoons, and dozing on the couch.

Ahhh, lets see...........I will take some apple pie and a glass of milk.  Put it on my tab Clown.

Well its good to hear alot of people had a good new years day.  I didn't do much myself.  Laid some track down to get a better idea of where my yard or what was going.  I think it looks good and might work out.  I will still tweak it here and there.  I will try to get a picture of the layout plan this weekend.  Just wonderng if I need to change around the cement plant.

The father in law is coming by Saturday and putting in some base board heat upstairs.  Its going to be VERY cold next week and weekend.  I'm just tired of being cold, and I'm sure everybody else is.

I will have to go to the hobby store tomorrow, and get some more flex, a left turnout, and some roadbed.

I guess I will get ready for bed.

Everybody have a good night, and I will be back for breakfast.

I've just been kicking back watching movies today, something I don't usually make time for. Maybe it's time to back off from the net a bit for some quiet time.

Good Evening, Chloe - looks like you ladies and Vinnie got the Diner cleaned up pretty quickly after last night. Of course, having Vinnie standing by the door kept things (as far as the Diner parties go...) reasonably 'calm'. I see the chandalier held up - you must've upgraded the chain it hangs by, since the last location. Good job! Thumbs Up

I'll just have a cup of hot cocoa and a hot fudge sundae, please. Thanks!

PC, sent you that email earlier tonight. His site is www.stephencurtischapman.com (if you want to see about listening to it - not sure if they have all the songs available for listening to clips).

Rob, maybe your critters had already had their New Year's party before you went out to refill their feed last night. So is the tile guy one of your 'after-the-contractor' tasks that you get to do? (Hoping I'm not stirring anything up there...) That deal about your wife's mother being unstable when she opened the door sounded scary.

Lee, was that a new Walthers sale flyer? I may have to go check my mailbox tomorrow - I don't have my most recent copies with me at the moment. Half off on vehicles sounds great - is that W-S, or all vehicles? Guess I'll find out, huh?

Scott, Sign - Welcome to the Diner - and have a beverage on me. Smile Best wishes on your projects (and the New Year), and we'd love to see pics of your trestle as you get along with that. Also, fill us in on your layout and RR that you model (modeling a prototype/freelancing? Time era? Kind of layout? etc. - we're a nosy inquisitive and friendly bunch in here (as you may have noticed).

Pittsburgh Tom (Offlinetcwright973) Sign - Welcome to the Diner also, and tell us about yourself and your layout (ideas, progress, etc.) also. And have a beverage on me, too!

BridgeTom, sorry to hear about losing your friend Jim, especially with all the time you've known each other. Prayers for you and for Jim's family. Reminds me that many surgeries are hazardous, even with all the safeguards the Dr's. take. And may I wish Remington a Happy B-Day! Better not ask him what he wants for his gift, the way he's been eyeing those Yellowstones...Whistling

Todd, better take care there, I don't know if the twins' insurance covers you if you're dancing around like that and fall down. OopsSmile,Wink, & Grin

Barry, that's right - train the grandkids early for MRR'ing. Looks like your granddaughter is a cutie (and I'm sure Blackie likes it better now that she pets him more gently.Wink

Ray, sounds like you and your CFO had a very enjoyable (and 'warm', so to speak) time in Paris. Bow Sign - Welcome back to this side of 'the pond'.

Robby, sounds like you're making some progress on your layout, which is good. We should all be as industrious!

Hope Inch finds out something on Jerry to tell us in the morning... Inch?

Well, I'd better finish up and head for home - got to go to w**k again tomorrow.Sigh See you tomorrow!

Blessings and prayers for those ailing or in need,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Evening Gang:

Tom I'm sorry ot hear about the loss of your friend. I know what you are going through since I lost my good friend Tony this year. I know that you will be all right.

Sounds like Remi will be getting some regular shots. Maybe he'll get used to them. Yea Right.

Not mush going on here today. I watched som TV and went out to the shop to do some more cleaning up. After that it was out to the field that I grubbed the mesquite out of and cleaned up some of the divits before plowing and disking. Last night Mary Ann and I went over to the daughters for supper and watched a John Wayne movie, Mclintock. We hit the sack early and didn't hear much untill the neighbors started with the fireworks. At least they didn't set anything on fire, like our hay lot.

Well tomorrow Mary Ann has to go in for her treatment. At least it's at 11am not 6am like normal. After I drop her off i'm going to head out to Clark Gardens and see what came in from Walthers. Lee Ann from there called yseterday to tell me that something came. Maybe it's the rest of the Hiawatha set. Hope Hope. I also need to get with Carol there about the spring train show. I'd like to get some planning in early.

Well it's time for bed.

Good Night All

Evenin' (yawn) No more coffee thank you. Better hit the sack. Got a wild hair today and decided to build my very first scratch built structure in the back room over there. So far it's coming along better than I thought it would. Not as good as those I've seen here but for my first, not too bad. I might post a picture of my progress this weekend unless something goes wrong or I forget. I won't say what it is until ya'll see it. Hopefully, (fingers crossed) some of you may recognize it. I'm referring to you "Hill Country" folk hint..hintWhistling. Hoo wee two late nights in a row,(yawn).

Bon Soir mes amis, WOW, the Diner is quite a mess. Flip was sent home early for trying to take over for Fergie, and the food is all gone, just some "mud" left in the bottom of the coffee pot.

We had a great time at the Inn last night, but we elected NOT to take the Sleigh ride, as the temp was down to 7F ( -14C ), the wind was gusting to 35mph, the wind chill was -20+, so we stayed by the big fireplace and ate the great food. Today we took the Christmas tree down and some of the holiday decorations, shoved ( pushed ) another 1" of snow off the driveway, and then relaxed for the rest of the day.

JIM: Yes, it has been quite a rollercoaster ride with temps lately, 60's last week and then 0F last night, 9F now. It will warmup to 35F tomorrow, but we have more cold in Canada just waiting to surge south by mide next week. All part of normal Winter in the north woods.

PC: I sent you an email today that will fit very nicely with what you wrote about what really counts in this life. Let me know if you receive it Ok.

RAY: Congrats, now that you are a certified "dog whisperer" you have been the first to tame the Diner dog, "rustyrail" . And your granddaughter Olivia is a real sweetheart, I know who is spoiling the daylight out of her!!

R.T.: You did real well for Christmas, I assume that pics will soon follow?

CN CHARLIE: Bon Jour mon ami, glad to see that you are back on this side of the pond safe and sound. Mighty cold up in your neck of the Canadian woods right now, I think you will have to travel by dogsled.

JEFF: Glad to see that you were the only one who behaved in the Diner last night, but then again, who could tell after 10 anyways. LOL

J.R. : Getting ready for the big show in West Springfield? Are you going to be set up in the Mallory building?

TOM: Very sorry to hear of the loss of your dear friend. It must be especially hard at this time of the year.

DER JOHN: Sable Island is getting hammered by the big storm, I hope Fergie isn't anywhere near that location, the seas must be mountainous!!!!

Time to hit the sack, 12:30, that is well past bedtime,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !!  I wish i had watched more of that. better than seeing Clemson shoot themselves in the foot in the Gator Bowl.

Well I must admit. The only reason I left it on cartoons as long as I did, was because I was too lazy to get up and find the remote, or change the channel manually. But I have to say, that having a brainless day of nothing was nice.

I'll take a cup of black coffee, black, please. I've got a dilemma. I made a New Years resolution to narrow down my list of potential names for my railroad, and finally choose one. I've got it down to Midland Pacific, Great Western, and Southland & Western.

I'm leaning more towards the Great Western because it conveys a big time railroad, and I like the Southland & Western because I'm a Smith & Wesson Fan. If I end up choosing S&W for the railroad, I was going to number all my Loco's for S&W calibers.

My railroad is going to be set in the mid to late 1930's as a Southwestern version of the SP&S jointly owned by the Southern Pacific, and the Gorre & Daphetid.

It will connect with the SP somewhere on the Sunset route (haven't decided where yet) and hook up with the G&D in East divide. What do you guys think about the two names I've come down to? Any help would be appreciated.

So, I hope you all enjoyed my visitors yeaterday morning. I'm off to snowblow my driveway, then out to run errands. Once I am done, I'll get the photos of the WS Learning Kit posted.

AAH yes deer running in the streets---we get that up here as well---going biking and turn a corner and see one looking at you with an expression---where'd you come from?---then take off. And certain experts keep saying that there are no wild critters in cities---   ---and get this, I heard one earlier this morning saying---they are always someone's pet run loose---

I model the Chicago and Northwestern in N scale.  Time period is 1940s - 1950s.  The geography is loosely based in western Wisconsin near the Mississippi River (not flat farmlands as one might think, but beautiful bluffs and hills).  All my towns are fictional, though.  Right now it is a Plywood and Pacific, but trains are running.  The layout room is 14 x 28, with one end extending into the workshop for two staging yards representing Chicago and the St. Paul.  As soon as I figure out how to post some pics, I will. Mornin' everyone!

Flo I'll have some of the French Roast Java in a FGLK Mug and a blueberry muffin if you please.  I'm just sitting here by the phone waiting to hear from the guys working on the recording with me.  Couldn't get together on New Years Eve due to the snow, but I thought they would be ready to roll today.  My phone recording machine has died (antique variety that used the little tapes).  I tried resetting the machine, changing tapes, and pressing all the buttons in various order to see if it would decide to work for a while longer but no go.  I'll add it to the list of stuff to replace......

John and Barry we get those critters here in Geneva also.  In September about 5 years ago I was splitting and stacking wood by hand at my back porch when I looked up into the eyes of 3 doe that were standing less than 10' away from me in my lawn watching me intently.  They decided to exit quite fast after I looked at them.  I don't know who was more startled me or them!

Scott, welcome to the diner.  Have lunch on me.  Flo Scott wants to order and put it on my tab, OK.

Have a great day!

Good Morning Lunchtime, Diners! Zoe, I'll have one of those Po'Boys like Ryan fixes, please, and a root beer float. Thank you, ma'am!

PC, do you think that sign includes some of us 'unattended children' over the age of 21? Whistling

Dick, if you think the Diner looks bad now, you should've seen it yesterday morning...Shock Luckily, I think Vinnie borrowed a bulldozer to help get the major stuff moved out.Laugh

JP, which W-S Learning kit do you have? I know they have a few ('cause I have 2 or maybe 3 that I need to get out and work with myself...Oops) Loved your 'dear' pictures there. I'm used to seeing possums or raccoons in town, but haven't (yet) seen any deer in Cape. I know during deer season, there are some roads outside of town where you have to drive extra, extra careful.

Jason, I'd lean toward your Great Western name, for some of the reasons you mentioned. The Southland and Western sounds too close to the SSW or the Southern Rwy. (unless you want folks to be confused between the two...).

Jason, sounds like you have a good space for iNvisible scale to run in. You could have interchange with Garry's CB&Q, too, I suppose. Wink

Don, it's been a lonnnnggg while since I've seen you in the Diner (of course, you might've been peeking in the windows at times and I just missed you. Yeah, I'm surprised that Bergie hasn't asked us to move the Diner to another track already. Guess we may hear soon from him. How've you been doing yourself? Oh yeah, the coffee's good now - Zoe dumped and rinsed the coffeemaker out this morning (after the debacle that was our NYEve party).Smile,Wink, & Grin

Ah, my lunch is ready now. I'll be chowing down now. Dinner

Good morning, and yes, it is almost lunchtime for some of you.

More errands in town today.  Larry left well before 6:00 this morning, so I got a headstart on chores.  That should make up for all the lounging around that we did yesterday and the day before.

Later,

Sue

Don, it's been a lonnnnggg while since I've seen you in the Diner (of course, you might've been peeking in the windows at times and I just missed you

Oh I'm here more than you realize.  The diner is a great place to hang out and get the latest news.

I'm usually hiding behind the morning paper being quiet.  Every once and a while I see something amusing and I chuckle quietly.

*drinking his coffee now*...(Late start with new years and all.)

I wish i had watched more of that. better than seeing Clemson shoot themselves in the foot in the Gator Bowl.

[snip]

I vote for the Smith & Wesson. the Great western used to be an RR in England, lol.

Packers#1, the Great Western RR also was a line that carried sugar in Colorado. Some of the surving steam locos from that RR are:

#90- a Baldwin 2-10-0 that now opreates at the Strasburg RR in Pennslyvannia.

#75- A Baldwin 2-8-0 that is being restored (almost done) at the Heber Valley RR in Utah

#60- A Alco 2-8-0 that is being restored ( almost done) at the Black River & Western in New Jersey

#51- A Baldwin 2-8-0 that is being restored ( to my knowledge) in either California or Colorado

I believe on of the forum members here models the G&W.
