Hi Jarrell: Very nice! It looks pretty complete to me.  Who doesn't hate ballasting, except maybe Cody from MRR?  The lighting is great in this shot. I'm still experimenting with lighting, haven't found a good method, yet.

Thanks Grampy!  Yep, Cody crossed my mind when I was doing some ballasting just this morning.  I was wishing he was here!  Grampy, at present I have an advantage when it comes to lighting over most of you.  I used to do a lot of wedding photography and still have a 4 unit pro light set from those days.  I almost always use only one of those for mrr photos.  It's on a light stand that I can adjust up and down and easily move around.  That said, I've done many pictures in my time using a simple 'work light', the kind with the metal reflector and a clamp.  I used a wooden pole on a base and the pole was about 6 1/2 feet tall and I'd clamp the work light on it and move it around, usually at about a 45 degree angle camera to subject axis.  I then set the camera on timer and while it's counting down I use a piece of white typing paper, cardboard etc. and hold it just out of camera view on the opposite side from the light.  This reflects some light back into those really dark shadow areas.  It really helps to have the camera on a tripod or some other means of support for this.  In fact, it absolutely vital because of the longish shutter speed necessary for correct exposure.  A regular household light bulb in the worklight will work fine, but they give off a very reddish light that will need to be corrected with a computer program OR in the camera when the photo is made by adjusting the white balance.

Doing pictures this way I use aperture priorty mode on the camera and set the camera to a small lens opening, such as f7 or 8 so that I get the max depth of field that I can.

Anyway, that's probably a lot more than you wanted to know..  Whistling [:-^]

Neat photos as usual, this weekend.

Here's my contribution--a little too windy and cold to actually work on a garage layout out here in SunnyCal, so I've just been running trains.

Here's my big 2-10-2 #1408 with a freight running along the North Yuba River just west of the Buttes.  She's a PSC model of a Rio Grande F-81 and she hauls like a team of oxen!  I get a real 'bang' out of her little Vandy tender, though.  That's how they came from Alco in 1916.

Hey, Tom. That's a great photo of your 2-10-2! Wow!

I posted a couple of pictures in WPF last night. I meant to include a Work-In-Progress shot, too. I am extending the layout "eastward". Friends helped me build some benchwork this past week. I am connecting my around-the-wall layout to thise bench work. I will have a two level reverse curve. The upper level will have part of city, and more city will be added to the right.

The layout is being built in sections in case of an eventual move to another location.

While we are on explanations, can someone please tell me why the 'Weekend Photo fun' section covers 3 days (72 hours). I thought there were only two days on a weekend. I finish work Friday arvo then the weekend starts at midnight.

I'm not complaining as we have an extra day to get the photos in.

We just finished a three day weekend here (called a long weekend) where my footy team won the grand final and I attended the major annual model rail exhibition here in Sydney.

I enjoy viewing this thread each weekend.

WPF often runs 4 and sometimes 5 days!  Being retired, WPF starts Friday & runs to Thursday!!  Big Smile [:D]

Yep!  When you are retired there are 6 Saturdays and one Sunday in every week.  So WPF can be all week long.........Wink [;)]

Hi Jarrell: I was hoping you would reveal some of your secrets in regard to your lighting. Thank you for the tips, very enlightening, pardon the pun. Tom, another great shot from you this week. Garry, looks like you've got some work ahead of you, looking good!

Nice work guys!

My SDL39 long hood is starting to look like a locomotive hood now! The hood doors and filter aren't on yet, I need to buy some more styrene. My mistakes are also evident on the long hood. But I'll fix that with styrene and putty. Tongue [:P]

Hi all,

This is the first time posting photos ever so I hope this works out.  Due to the terrible weather this summer I was able to paint up four undecorated Walthers passenger cars to my road (AlaskaRR).  I took far off shots so you wouldn't see all my mistakes.
You will also notice my new Atlas GP40-2 with sound.  Pretty good runner... even on DC.  Peter

Grampys Trains, all I can say is Weathered Art! I have the same mine and want to weather it. Outside is painted silver and inside is painted black. I want it to look used but, not as used as yours. I use chalk and dull coat. Any tips you feel like passing on to us?

It do not remember the name of the member that hates to ballast and posted the picture of the 2 steam engines at the round house. But, it is one of the best pictures I have seen posted! I will add, I saved it to my files.

Tom, great as normal and love the Vanderbilt tender.

Far as Weekend Photo Fun being to long, how can the best thread on this site be to long? My self I think we need a Week Long Photo Fun. Current WPF gives me something to look forward to, and gets me into gear to get some work done!

Thanks for all the pictures as well, I like to look.

Hi Ken:Thank you. From the pictures of coal handling, buildings, equipment, etc. everything is covered in black coal dust, that's the look I was aiming for. I used an alcohol-ink wash, dull coat, Bar Mills rust and black. Good luck with yours!

Ken,

I completely agree.  I could hardly wait this week, I was so proud of my little Ford truck - living alone, you guys are the only folks I get to show off to.  I think about the forums guys while I work - you keep me motivated to keep my standards up.

Anytime, my friend.  Just remember, Yuba Pass makes Sherman Hill look like a bump, LOL!

Thanks for the compliment.  Appreciate it a LOT!

Jon Grant

I've always enjoyed looking at your work.  The modeling and photography are great.  Can I ask what you use for the vegetation?  They look like Noch or Busch but please let me know... I'm trying to find that stuff but the local LHS's only sell Woodland Scenics turf and clumps, which doesn't achieve the effect I am looking for.

I'll probably have to have it ordered for me since nobody carries it in stock.

 Thanks.

็Hello everyone,

This week is also fantastic trade idea, i've just finished the tank's weathering. Nothing is much done so far.   Telling myself to keep up all my works, that's it.

Should it be this way? before and after!

See you later,

Peter (modelalaska), nice work!Thumbs Up [tup]  I hope you are planning to put some insulation behind that plastic sheeting!!Sad [:(]  It works for heat as well as cold - which you get more of the latter that the former!!  I was in Alaska twice when I was in the Army ('65), each time for only 1 day, once in August (probably caught one of your ten days of summer!) and once in Feb - never again in Feb!!!Thumbs Down [tdn]  Beautiful country!!Thumbs Up [tup]  Are the mosquitos still a foot long?Confused [%-)]

Ivan, thanks for the complement!  I will do better on the photos next time. The room is down in the "crawlspace" of the house (no heat but 8' walls). It is insulated on the outside walls. Gets a bit nippy in the winter but my Kato units run just fine.

As for the mosquitos, they are now a foot and a half long due to global warming. Sigh [sigh]  You should make another trip sometime, a lot has changed since 65.
