I was surprised by the overly broad "RSD-series" which includes the RSD-4/5's which were very different from the later RSD's. Also, "RS-series" includes the adorable RS-1, the sexy RS-3, and the respectable RS-11, all very different locos. My fave is the RSD-15, though I'd rate the PA highly as well as the FA.

Diesel: PA
Steam: Oh I've plenty, the big boy, the FEF's, the challengers, the 4-12-2, etc. It seems like just about every steamer built for the UP was an ALCO (but there were Baldwins, too)

PA in AT&SF is drop dead beautiful, while the Alco PA demo scheme is even uglier than Baldwin"s 'Shark' demo paint scheme. But paint the 'Shark' in PRR Brunswick Green with but a single stripe and it is a whole different deal!

New York Central streamlined J3a Hudson class
New York Central 4-8-4 Niagara class.

Beautiful works of art combined with major muscle! Alco was in the top of its class with these designs.

The S-series switchers. Good to learn on, easy to work on, functional, simple, and absolutely indestructable.

Oh man, gut wrenching question. [B)]

Very hard for a true Alco fan to choose JUST ONE. [}:)] [;)]

I dearly love the long nosed Alligators (RSD-15) [:p]

I very much like the RS-1, RS-2, RS-3s, how can you not like the "classic" look of them? They were and are what a hi-hood should look like. [;)]

And of course the PAs. [:)]

I better stop here or I will be naming them all. [;)] [:p] [:D]

Right on about Alco's!! I witnessed the Blacklands Railroad in Sulphur Springs, Texas fire up an RS3 for the first time a few years ago--they were watering the engine when we first arrived. The crew told me it would take a while and my wife agreed to wait--3 hours!! I had never seen a RS3 in action before--saw a RSC-2 in Panama. It was worth the wait and I still thank my wife to this day for her patience!!! There is no such thing as a "bad" Alco--at least from a railfan point of view!!

My wife even agreed to vacation in Springdale, Arkansas so I could see the A&M's Alcos!! They even had a couple of C424's in BRC paint at the time!! I guess I can consider my wife as the Alco of wives--just don't tell her I said that!!! She was born a few days before Alco delivered their last ever diesel.

Gotta be the RS1...That has to be the best design diesel locomotive Alco ever made and it was produce from 3/41-3/60 for the total of 417 units. No other Alco loco was in production for the length of time.

Having just "discovered" Alco diesels, I had a tough time deciding between the PA and teh FA. One thing I really like about the Alco's is how easy they are to distinguish compared to EMD's, etc. Bottom line, I chose the PA.

Hmmm My favorite is, the one in the corner thats burning to the ground...

no..no.. i'm kidding

So relax and take a joke...

I'm Truly not one For Alco's, But i will give the PA this, they had a sleek design, and thats all I have nice to say about it..

If i had an alco, I'd charge everyone a Dollar for each swing, and i'll provide the baseball bat.

See.. i'm kidding again.

C420s, C424s, and C628s.

This area used to be Alco heaven with the lehigh and New England, Lehigh Valley, Reading, and the Lehigh & Hudson River being big Alco users. It still is with the Delaware Lackawanna

Dear kevin,
What is your predeliction against Alco's? I understand you're only kidding here, but on the EMD vs. GE topic you expressed anti-Alco sentiment more than once. And this from a man who admits to never having even seen one! Take it from one who has had cab rides in one--Alco's are hard working machines which gave their owner's their money's worth. So don't think that they're bad.

Oh tough choice as it would be for all Alcophiles.Love RS's but picked the C's the C?M630,636's are top flight favs but I do like a good C424 as well. FA1's and 2's are a close second and RS10's and 18's are to close a choice to call. Rob

Tough choices...

Absolute favorite is probably the C636 - this thing just screams power. Too bad there's only one left in operation (on the D-L).

But from the more common Alcos, the Century series in general would have to rank as a favorite.

Also, not mentioned on the poll, but I'm putting the T6 out as one of my favorites.

I own an HO version of every ALCO locomotive, most in brass, but nothing compares to the PA's and the "Alligator's". Yes the steam stuff is great too, but I'm with the opinion this poll is for diesels. Since I'm an SP fan I operate the older stuff, S, RS, RSD, C415, DH643, Century, etc etc.. The RS27, 855's and the C-4?? series stuff is display material for me. Long live the memory of the ALCO's.

My all time favorite Alco is the RS1. That said, I suspected the PA would lead the list. Good looking engine in the right paint scheme(ATSF War Bonnet). I was surprized that the big 'brute-ish' Centrury series only garnered 9% of the vote.

I voted for steam, although alco's PA's weren't bad.
