I'm hoping to post something from my layout at some point in time. In the meantime, here's an acquisition of mine from the New York Central System Historical Society (NYCSHS) train show, that was held here in Cleveland back in May:
A brass NYCRR Brakeman's latern - ca. 1912
It has a wick in it and supposedly still works.

Mods, feel free to clean up those links. thanks
A lot of cool stuff this week y'all!
I decided I'd try to work on my weathering skills, (or lack there of ) a bit. I had 2 new Life-Like 100 ton hoppers left over from my store, so I thought they would be good candidates.
I very lightly weathered one for starters.
Then figured I'd make loads for them. That took most evening to get the supplies ready.
Yesterday, I put the finishing touches on the loads.
Sorry about the pics...it looks like I still need to work on my photography. I can't seem to get the indoor lighting quite right. I tried two 300 watt halogen floods tonight, and the pics seem worse. I'll keep trying though.

Jake: How often does the train go by? Elwood: So often you won't even notice ...
No modelling photos this time, but here's the prototype at work:
Eastbound UP coal train on the former D&RGW at Rollinsville, CO, on July 29, with a brand new ES44AC and and ex-SP AC4400 in the lead, 2 more SP AC4400's and a UP SD90/43MAC about 20 cars from the end and a UP AC4400 bringing up the rear. Photo by my wife (God love that woman) who shot quick from the car in case I didn't make it out in time.....

Your camera might have an adjustment for white balance will will help correct for the color those halogen work lights put out.

Great picture. To my untrained eye, it seems very well balanced between foreground and the sky above the low mountains in the background. I think that you should consider letting her do all your photography work. My wife would probably have had her finger across the middle of the picture, right where the important part is, but if anyone tells her I said that I'll deny it to my dying breath.
A big pat on the back to your missus and thanks to you for posting it.
Blue Flamer.
I've been working in this area for what seems like years. I built a car shop from sections of the Walther's modular kits, still have a good bit of work to do on it.
and around the 'business' end of it..
Thats about it for me. Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Hi,
Not much time for modelling lately, so I just gathered up a bunch of stuff and put together this scene....
The tower is scratchbuilt, as is the factory. The factory is built using DPM modular walls with custom made windows.
The engine is a Powerhouse Pacific.
The scene has a pretty major flaw in it though. Can you spot it?

Hi, everyone. I have enjoyed all your images...lots of great development going on here and there. This is my first contribution in about three weeks. I finally held my nose and "weathered" up my PCM y6b a bit. At least it looks dirtier if nothing else. Below the bridge, reflected in the water, two pairs of canoeists are enjoying their summer, not seemingly intimidated by all those tons of steel imposing above them.
The 'hill' just left of the bridge is actually a hand towel sprayed with 3M glue and then scenicked with ground foam. I then propped it up on a stool beside the narrow shelf on which the bridge rests, as this image shows.

Tim,
The first reefer has derailed? Must be the turnouts.

Ouch!
But, yes, the refeer is off the rails. I haden't noticed it until I posted the image here. The entire scene is about 24" long, so I just dropped the car onto it and never checked that it was actually on the track!
This is the module that was used...

It's Weekend Photo FUN isn't it!! My grandson John has added an Army Base to the plywood central!! The "grass" is foamcore from the dollar store, the roads are black foam from the craft store, and the "parking lots" are construction paper. It won't win any modeling awards, but it sure is FUN!!

Margarita man, I think you may be right. I still need practice!
Lou...I kinda liked the Bud Light loads, too. I ended up using a different cut of the box for the loads, and saved the Bud Light loads for a "fun" load.

Wow.
Only the plastic people give it away as a model.
Nice!

It's it just me or is the boiler and what's underneath it crooked? It may be the shows playing tricks on me though.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

V&AL,
I have to ask....is there an inside story on why the word Allegheny is spelled with 2 n's on your loco instead of the normal spelling with one n? Just curious....
Don Z.
Research; it's not just for geeks.
I get that all the time.
The true story is a young boy in Texas was naming a railroad for a the geographic local that his grandparents lived in... and didn't spell it properly.
The historical story is that the founders of the RR (PRR and NYC executives) dictated the name to their secratary, who dictated the name to a telegrapher, and when the telegram finally reached it's destination the telegram was mispelt...
Don--
Just jumping in here, but I've seen the word spelled about four ways--Allegheney, Alleghenny, Allegheny, and out here in California, we have a little mining town northwest of my home town where it's spelled Alleghany. I wonder if it's a kind of 'regional' thing--depending on the region, of course?
