Hi Zoe - I'll have a coney dog and a RBF, please. Thanks!

Lot of posts to dig through. (whew!)

RT, hope that mortgage company runs out of questions really soon. Hang in there in the meantime. You wear them down, not the other way around.Yeah!! [yeah] Thumbs Up [tup]

Nice steamer there, TexasTerry - I'm sure you'll be having fun today/tonight with that. Smile [:)]

Trent, sorry to hear about your divorce. As others said, they may wise up when the kid is still a brat long after you've moved on down the road... Good to hear that your job and the shop are doing well. Tell Ed to phone home - er, post in the Diner - soon. Remind him we're getting low on the orange juice, too! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Rob, remember to get those teeth (yours!) looked after, okay? Then you can get back to me on the plans (no rush). Hope your folks keep the meds straight with the timers.

I know I've probably forgotten several posts I should've responded to, so my apologies. It's been a bit busy at work, my new(er) laptop is in and I'm having difficulties with it. Have emailed the place I bought it. I'll try some more troubleshooting over lunch and/or after work today. Hopefully get things lined out right.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

P.S. We didn't get much of the rain that they were forecasting for us (and I'm okay with that).

After a short test run the sound of this loco is very disappointing

The chuff is far too hissy and shallow and the whistle is totally wrong

The bell sound is ok but the rate is way to fast

The Tsunami articulated chuff has this beat by a mile

Hopefully I can find some fixes for this

The loco it's self is smooth as silk and takes 18" radius curves with ease and glides smoothly thru turnouts   it has amazing slow speed performance

Terry--

I think Crandell had the same issues with his--I think he was retrofitting a Tsunami in his, but I'm not sure.  You might contact him.  But I'm glad you like the running qualities.  You're right, it has an AMAZING slow speed performance, and really good control throughtout the speed ranges.  Of course, I'm strictly DC, so I don't know about DCC programming for it.

As I said, run it in for a while to get that factory 'polish' off of the driver treads, then I think you'll be really amazed at the pulling qualities of this baby.  As for the sound issues--I hope that's cureable.  Or at least to the point where it isn't quite so noticeable.  (If it helps, try finding the right 'steamboat' whistle for an M-4 Yellowstone---NOT!!! Found 2 more HO locos that might actually be more appropriate for the wife. First, an obvious choice for a Southern girl:

and just cause' I like it, this one:

I still prefer the loggers, but all this is on a back-burner at the moment anyway. Have other plans to tackle first.

Made a run to the PO to ship off most of those latest vintage diesels I sold. Our phone line is out, so I can't call ahead to check on the hay situation. Not going to make that trip without knowing it's ready to load. Would like to pick it up today before the rains come.

Rob - guess you could call from town while you're there, and then run back home for the right vehicle/trailer if the hay is ready. Just an idea. Hope your phone gets back up and running soon.

Evening Gang: I just got off the phone with Chuck at Chuck's Depot. What a really nice guy. He had the Proto 1000 Erie Built A&B units in Milwaukee Raod that I've been looking for. He also had one of the sets of Milw Rd cabeese that I wanted. Of course everything is costing me retail but at least I got them. There are some thunderstorms building out west of here. I guess we'll be in for another bit of rain tonight. We got about 3/8ths of an inch this morning. I went in to the hospital for the pre op stuff. Tomorrow I take eye drops every hour and then twice Friday morning. The operation is schedualed for 9am Friday.

Trent I'm real sorry to hear about your devorce. I'll second and third the words of the others. It really sounds like you are in an impossible situation. Hang in there and you know where we are friend.

Doh. I guess Gav got in while I was editing my post. Have at it guys and remember that I just made a big buy.

I need to go and help Mary Ann so I'll see you all later.

Good evening......high clouds are moving in so I think we have seen the last of clear skies for a while here in this neck of the woods. That's OK, I have some MRR stuff to do, and I need a few days to rest these aching muscles.I actually broke a Sears Craftsman rake, so that will be going back asap for free replacement.

GARRY: Are you funnin me lad??? LOL No inflation?? Gas is up over $.60 from last year, milk is way up, beef is way up, cerial, sugar, wheat, rice, heating oil, health insurance premiums, and on and on....and you say no inflation??? I guess we should all move to olde Kentuck...hehehehehehhehe  LOL You olde river fox!!

PC: That strategy can work, but you must watch the rates constantly. Remember, if the rates go up, so won't the fixed rates. Right now you can get a 30 year fixed rate up here for 5.9%. That is a darn good rate. Financial consultants will tell folks not to touch a variable rate now unless they plan to sell withing a few years.

There were some bad storms headed for Jeff's area this afternoon, I hope he is OK, they sure looked nasty on the radar.

COLIN: Welcome to the Diner, and nice find on that kit !! Sign - Welcome [#welcome]

Later guys,

hello everybody...

Paul .... I'm gald you talked with Chuck. yes, he's quite a good guy. I think I mentioned those Erie Builts were in teh store, And I'm gald you got them. His inventory is really something considering it's in a small town.

Well, Dick... I was kinda teasing you; so I gues you can tease me back. But the CPI report for April was only 0.2%. That's much better than in most other countries and it beats the pants off what we had around 1980. Now, don't break any more rakes! Cheers to you!

Metra Colin.  I'm glad you are in the Diner, and it's always good to know that young people are doing constructive things are you are. I'm familiar with Chicago area becasue I grew up along the old Burlington Route's triple track mainline.

On my railroad, I'm still working on the layout, and lately, I've weathered a couple of passenger cars.

Happy Model Railroading.

OK, how difficult would it be to turn a DCC loco into a DC loco? Whistling [:-^]

Thanks!

Today is the 20th anniversary of a terrible accident.

A drunk driver drove his truck into a church bus on I-71 near Carrolton, KY killing 27 people.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrollton_bus_collision

I see the signs posted each time I drive to Cincinnati from here. It's between Louisville,KY and Cincinnati, OH.

So, please remind others to stay sober while driving.

Ello ladies and gents.

I'm sitting here being bored out of my mind... Got a signus infection (Pretty sure of it) which is real fun to deal with. So here I am.

Rob:  The first three engines you showed, the mallet, the hiesler, and the shay, are all good. Shay is probably the best. Then the mallet (unless the hiesler is newer, I'm pretty sure its a rivarossi) and then the Hiesler. As for the next two, the 4-4-0 is a great one, that little 0-4-0 is probably not that good, though. As for prices on the Athearn Big Boy... Hows $270 sound? http://www.wholesaletrains.com/NProducts2.asp?Scale=N&Item=bb4884ath

That's $10 more than I paid for my big boy from them.

One rather bored,

Mark

I just did something I have buyers remorse for already, only because money is tight. (I'll list some more vintage trains on the-bay tomorrow to compensate) I bought an HO loco for wife and it's DCC. Hope I didn't pay too much for this?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=350056404898&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=022#ebayphotohosting

Next question, should I convert it to DC or can a real cheap DCC controller be found for it?

Evening,

When I got my ARM I thought I was going to move at the end of the 3rd year, so it was a smart move for me, but I still shopped around for an ARM with limits, a grantee, and a max cap.  So far it's working out.  I would recommend shopping for a 30yr fixed.

Diesel hit $4.50/gal.

I might need to buy a horse to pull my pick-up to and from work, LOL!

 Good Evening Diners!

Well I've been looking but have been too busy to actually stop by this fine establishment. It's the crazy time of year as we go from winter to a few weeks of spring and then summer so there is a lot of yard work, clean the car, etc., etc.

Tom, I read your post about your Mum and it certainly reminded me of mine who turned 94 this spring. She often calls me worried that she doesn't have enough money, stock market is down and so forth. While she couldn't buy a small country or even a small town she is fine but I guess we should be glad that is all they have to worry about.

JT, sure hope things work out on that mortgage for you. I do financial consulting for small business and I agree with others here who advise against a variable rate mortgage. Rates will go up as the impact of inflation is felt. It hasn't really hit yet but food costs will increase and oil is unlikely to go down. As far as term goes, there is as much danger in going too short as too long as you don't want to have too much of your income going to mortgage payments. I've seen more than one small business get into trouble with cash flow trying to pay off loans too fast. No different for an individual.

Speaking of inflation, gas here is now $4.90 a gallon and for the premium my car says it must have the cost is $5.29 a gallon. Sympathy cards or similar thoughts are appreciated.

Rob, I have a Spectrum Consolidation I bought last November and it is one of my favourite locos. It just looks right and runs great too. While I use DCC I believe it has a dual mode decoder so it should work fine on DC. I have a Southern but in black. Well it was a Southern but it now wears a CN monogram. Actually I picked the Southern version as I wanted the white tires and running boards as CN usually had them painted that way.

Dick, It sounds like your weather is now about like ours. We did have 25 mm of rain on Monday but that has been it for about a month. We don't have a forest fire problem here ( mostly prairie) but in northern Manitoba they sure will. I will get to hear those water bombers a lot as they use an abandoned air force base north of here near where I keep my boat. Love the sound of those radial engines!

Well tomorrow is my LHS night. Have to pick up some ballast I ordered and the gas pumps the service station.

Paul, good luck with the cataract surgery. My mother has had both eyes done and found the worry was the worst part. Recovery was only a couple of days.

Well I had better sign off before I use up an entire page.

Evening Gang: It's raing here. The radar has it just about finished for us. I don't know how much it rained but maybe a half inch.

Rob I think that loco will run on DC allright. The decorder is most likly a dual type, DCC and DC.

Lee diesel is $4.28 and gasoline is around $3.80. We may have to go back to using horses and mules for the ranch.

Well it's off to bed.

Good Night All

***CN Charlie & Paul, if this loco can indeed be run on DC (MRC Tech II), that would make me feel much better about having made this purchase. Sent off a quick e-mail to Bachmann.

I personally prefer black locos, but my gut tells me the wife would prefer the "pretty" green version. I have the N scale version (Union Pacific) and like it very much. To be honest, it is the only Bachmann loco I have ever been happy with.

Will have to ask what kind of cars she will want for it. Probably some kind of Circus cars. Whatever she decides is fine with me.

Going to put up my vintage Riv. Mallet and probably one more diesel on the-bay tomorrow. This should more than cover the cost of the wife's new loco. Between her health & family issues, she is having a difficult time these days. Seems to me, it's an ideal time for another surprise gift.

Good morning all,

Rob, let's see the decoder is worth about $50 so you bought the locomotive for $9, not too bad I would say don't feel guilty.  If you're not going to use the decoder remove it and sell it on the bay I think if you started the auction at $10 you may get $20 to $45 for it after reviewing like sale comparisons.

***Lee, that sounds like a good idea to me. Hmmm, wonder how much it would cost to "upgrade" that loco to a sound decoder w speaker (or however that would work)??
